A very easy 5⭐️ from me for Mind Mangler at the Apollo Theatre 🧙🏻♂️ Admittedly, it felt like a very special show for me today. My grandad and I loved watching @mischiefcomedy together (I lost count of how many times we saw Peter Pan Goes Wrong) and three years ago today he passed away. Felt fitting that tonight I finally saw some of the Mischief Comedy gang in @themindmangler on stage🪄 Emotional investment aside, I absolutely loved this show. Laugh out loud funny from the start to the very end, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard an audience enjoy a show so much. The comedic timing of both Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer is absolutely impeccable - and though I would expect nothing less with their long, long list of achievements, it was an absolute joy to see on stage. Both utilise their improv skills to perfection through repeated audience interaction which blended seamlessly with more scripted moments. From a ‘quick fire Jesus’ display of magical prowess to revealing the secrets of anyone willing to sit in the stalls, the pace of the show doesn’t let up which only serves to increase the humour. Soon to be heading out on a UK tour, it’s not one to be missed for a truly enjoyable evening full of laughter. This was a truly fabulous production that brought all the themes to life strongly. The cast were utterly phenomenal in showing the highs and lows the characters go through. It’s not a story for the faint at heart so I would strongly advise checking the warnings before seeing it. The use of the characters lines on the wall whilst being said was also something new that I really enjoyed and added to the atmosphere. Xαίρομαι που την απόλαυσα στο θέατρο καθώς στην παράσταση ξεδίπλωσε με χιούμορ αλλά και ευαισθησία πτυχές ενός πλούσιου ταλέντου που κινείται σε νέες κατευθύνσεις από εκείνες που μας χαρίζει στο "Maestro" -ειδικά ο συγκλονιστικός τρόπος που έδωσε τον μονόλογο της στο τέλος ήταν από τις στιγμές στο θέατρο που δυναμιτίζουν τη ψυχή σου. Αλλά χαίρομαι πάνω από όλα γιατί είχα την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσω μια ηθοποιό χαμογελαστή, εμφανώς συγκινημένη μετά την τελευταία αυτή παράσταση αλλά και έναν άνθρωπο προσιτό και ευγενικό με αβίαστο χαμόγελο και γέλιο, με κουβέντες γεμάτες ζεστασιά. My absolute favourite plays of his are A midsummer night’s dream and Romeo and Juliet (basic choices, I know but the heart wants what the heart wants🤷🏻♀️). “Everyone deserves the chance to fly” 💚 . Is there a better place to spend a Saturday night than Oz? We had the most thrillifying return to Wicked, catching the current UK tour at @officialbradfordtheatres last night! Wicked was the first show I ever saw live in the West End, way back in 2019, and it opened me up to the utter magic of seeing musical theatre live and in person (definitely different to dancing round the kitchen singing along to the soundtracks very, very badly). The Wizard of Oz also holds very special memories to me of watching the DVD over and over with my Gran as a little girl, so this story and the music and the people on and off stage who have created this story will always mean so much to me. And I even managed to tick off another bucket list theatre moment that I never thought would happen seeing a @carlmanofficial Fiyero, I thought the moment had passed and I’d never witness your brilliance, but I was so lucky and honoured to have seen you take to the stage last night! (I might still humming ‘Dancing Through Life’ twenty one hours later) @itslaurapick and @sarah_c_oconnor were simply beautiful as the green and pink girls and I maybe even shed a little tear at ‘For Good’ at the end. 🧡 Hell’s Kitchen: Review 🧡 @hellskitchenbway opened last night on Broadway and here are my thoughts on it: This show was a mixed bag for me, but not in the ways I’d been told to expect. I went in having heard largely negative word of mouth and had low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised by how relatable and enjoyable the show ended up being for me. The standouts of the show: @shobean gives 110% as Ali’s mother and her performance is truly unforgettable. @therealkecialewis was my favorite part of the show. Her role as Miss Liza Jane is the heart and soul of the piece. Not enough people are talking about how incredible she is, so let me say it as loudly as I can! @maleahjoimoon was youthful and stubborn and relatable as the teenage Ali and played the awkward lovestruck teen with ease. @brandonvdixon as Ali’s dad was suave and charismatic. What the show did well: the cast can SING! There’s no question they are a talented bunch of singers. And this show certainly gave them the opportunity to shine! The second act is significantly stronger than the first act, allowing the plot to really crescendo in a way that is lacking in the first half. What I would change: Personally, I’m not a fan of the statutory r*pe storyline where the audience is meant to empathize with Ali and not her mother. This story could’ve been told with a boy her own age who her mother didn’t approve of and it would work better. Also, I personally wasn’t a fan of the choreography throughout the show. That said, what the cast was given, they performed well. She won numerous awards and was the first British female artist to have gained an impressive five Grammys. Yet Sam Taylor-Johnson peels back the layers and shows us so much more than just the sensational singer, in her new biographical drama, Back to Black. Marisa Abela is Amy. She truly embodies her, as she perfectly blends edge, soul, and heart. Her vocals are unparalleled, making it difficult (at points) to distinguish who was singing. Abela is a powerhouse, a force to be reckoned with; making this film, I believe, her best performance to date. There’s a sweetness, and almost naivety to Amy that’s depicted in the film; Reminding us that despite her fame, unrivaled success, and addictions, Amy was just a girl who adored music and longed for love. Jack O’Connell plays Amy’s beloved bad-boy, Blake. O’Connell is a strong supporting actor, he radiates confidence, charm, and a subtle softness that makes it easy for us to see why Amy fell for him. But the film follows Amy and Blake’s turbulent and toxic relationship. It begins woozy and flirtatious, over a pool table and jukebox, but quickly turns sour when the pair are fighting in the street and Blake leaves Amy for his ex. Yet, Amy’s true love was her grandmother, Cynthia Winehouse. Played by the superb Lesley Manville, Cynthia greatly influenced Amy – from her distinctive retro style to her compassion and love of Jazz. The film highlights how Amy was the epitome of resilience, right to the very end. Despite the deep sadness that echoes throughout; her continuous heartbreak, the grief of her grandmother, the relentless paparazzi, and her life-shattering alcohol addiction, Winehouse carried on, created some of the most extortionary music we’ve ever heard, and continued to be her iconic self. They’ve faithfully followed the plot of the movie and it very much feels like stepping back into the 80s. Therefore the plot is over 40 years old and 2D nature of female characters should surprise none. The staging was strong and the switching between different scenery was good. The cast were fantastic in their singing and choreography and I enjoyed hearing all the 80s hits. Which diva-esque singer do you admire? 🎶 I’m on stage this week so thought it was appropriate to share a stagey book review. 🎭 Aisha and I went to the Diva Exhibition last week @vamuseum and loved it! Swipe to see photos! ✨ +++++ Book Review: Diva by @daisygeorgiatraill Although I started reading the physical copy of this book, I actually ended up listening to it so I could really soak up the atmosphere and I would recommend this to everyone, as it includes several bars of Maria singing, which really immerses you in her story. Maria Callas was quite a character; from a time when diva meant goddess, there’s no doubt that she lived up to her nickname (in all senses of the word). Goodwin is an excellent writer, managing to create a story that blends fact with fiction, whilst also weaving Maria’s stage presence with her real persona, ensuring that we get a balanced view of who she really was as well as the realities of a stage career. We see the glamorous parties, full of famous names dripping with diamonds, but we also see the love, passion and heartache she faces in her personal life. Even though she’s not particular likeable, you cannot help sympathising with Maria, especially her journey to get there, considering her childhood and all of the men who tried to control her. Each time she brushes shoulders with a well-known face, I found myself desperate to find out more about that person during that time; my American history is lacking so I had no idea Jackie Kennedy married Aristotle Onassis - that was a shocking reveal that sent me straight to Google! Although I liked where the story ended, it did feel a bit of a comedown and perhaps a little further on would have helped readers understand her a bit more, particularly the impact of her voice loss. A stunning fictionalised account of Maria Callas that will delight opera aficionados and novices alike. 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 Thanks to @headofzeus for my proof copy. This speakeasy hosted many well-known members of society, including F. Scott Fitzgerald himself. • The first 50 people to stop by @flutebar and show their ticket stub after seeing @bwaygatsby are treated with a complimentary glass of champagne! 🥂 • Gatsbyyyy: I love love love seeing a show while in previews! The changes week to week are so fun to try to spot. This week: a big change to the opening of Act 2 and a handful of line cuts and slightly different blocking. What This Week ✨ After doing nine nights last month, April is a bit more chilled with only one set of three nights which I’ve done this week! Followed by three and a half days off, it’s been a nice balance of work and life for once. This week has been powered by hockey podcasts in the background of whatever I’m doing, a good deep clean of my flat, a flat viewing which was quite an exciting step for the future, I finally managed to finish more than one book this month, continued digitising my nursing school notes and I even fitted in a theatre trip on Friday night! . Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has been on my bucket list for the longest time and it was the most fun and uplifting night I’ve had in quite a while. Getting to see how much @ivanoturco has developed as a performer since seeing him in Cinderella has been incredible! @bexmckinnis honestly gave me chills and wow, @keviclifton can sing! 😍🔥 . When I moved to Sheffield three years ago, obviously my job and then ice hockey were high on my pros list, but I’m also in love with the locality of the theatre - 15 minutes on a tram and I can spend a weekday night at a show? “I know my love should be celebrated / but you tolerate it.” 🖤 I’ve been sharing my theatre content for a few years now. Before that it was fandom content. Before that, travel. Before that, theatre. Everything in its time. I have pushed so hard to get here. Maybe harder than I should. I’ve tried to mold myself into someone that fits in with the cool kids and I still am suffering from imposter syndrome. I still feel like an outsider looking in. Which isn’t the fault of anyone in the content creator space. I just care too much and when I’m not met with equal enthusiasm back, my anxiety kicks in and I feel like a failure. Some of the thoughts I’ve been struggling with lately, related to content creation (no matter how unfounded they truly are - these are the anxieties I suffer from): 1. I annoy other content creators who are way cooler than me and they tolerate me (I have no proof that this is true, but my anxiety still kicks in all the time). 2. I post about Gatsby too much and the whole team is probably so sick of me… My brain tells me that they wish I would just stop bombarding them with messages and content every day and find a new hobby. (again, zero real concrete proof of this). 3. My content is not even going slightly viral so I must not be any good at this anyway and I’m just delusional for even pretending I am (okay, some proof of this). I love theatre. I love creating content. But I’m anxious and awkward. Both are true. Introducing Kate Morris as “Jessica” This is Kate’s first production with WTP having moved to Wellingborough six months ago, but she has been involved in the world of amdram for over 30 years doing everything from G&S to Shakespeare to panto where she has played pretty much every role except principal girl. For many years Kate was part of Oxford Theatre Guild and appeared in several of their productions including “Chariots of Fire”, and “Nicholas Nickleby”. Last year Kate played the fiery Queen Catherine in “Nell Gwynn” for which she learnt to speak and hurl insults in Portuguese and by contrast the rather flirtatious and naïve Rose in “The Recruiting Officer”. Despite having only been in Wellingborough six months, this is Kate’s second show at the Castle having sung with Arts Barn G&S Society back in November. Diane has acted locally for over 30 years in numerous roles, including in The Taming of the Shrew, The Ghost Train Love’s Labours Lost, The Dresser, The Duchess of Malfi, The Bacchae, Steel Magnolias and ‘Allo ‘Allo, and has thoroughly enjoyed bringing the character of Ruella to life. Previous roles with the Wellingborough Technical Players include Mrs Swabb in Habeas Corpus and Countess Felicity in Relative Values. Diane previously appeared in professional productions in A Tale of Two Cities and The Hook at the Royal & Derngate Theatre, in A Doll’s House, and My Mother Said I Never Should with the Shires Repertory Theatre, Drink, with Contact Light Theatre, as well as TV and film experience. The opportunities include: The Making Room Observer programme is an entry-level opportunity for aspiring creatives to observe and familiarise with professional rehearsal processes. Making Room Observers join the creative team to work on Sheffield Theatres productions. There will be two Making Room Observer positions available to apply for: one for Chariots of Fire (applications are open now and close on Sunday 5 May), and one for A Doll’s House (applications are open now and close on Sunday 29 June.) Later in the year, Sheffield Theatres will also be recruiting for a Making Room Observer for Little Shop of Horrors. The New Dramaturg’s Group is a four-month training programme, meeting weekly and designed for local artists to nourish an existing skill-set by developing and gaining practical experiences with dramaturgy. 🥂 Gatsby: A Dan Rosales Appreciation Post 🥂 Getting to witness @danrosales make his Broadway principal debut yesterday afternoon was everything!! Get it, Nick Carraway!! 8th preview, no less! As for the rest of the show, a lot has stayed the same since 1st preview - with minor changes (thinking of the offer to take Nick to the Met coming from Tom and not Daisy). I also thought I saw what looked like a kick to the face in one of the big party scenes during a flip, but no one reacted and just kept on keeping on. If it did happen, these incredible ensemble members are absolute professionals! Also want to give a shout out to the well-oiled machine that is the Gatsby stage door! A huge improvement from first preview, the stage door now is very well organized and friendly and calm. As it should be. Huge kudos to the cast for coming out and to the folks managing stage door crowds. If you haven’t seen @bwaygatsby yet, respectfully, what are you doing?! It’s a party that cannot be missed!!
