It’s been an adventure. 22 years ago I took the biggest risk of my life. In April 2002, exactly half my lifetime ago, I drove away from everything I had ever known and followed a removal truck to a town I had never been to before. Via Gunnedah and Moree, I left a beach life behind and became a farmer overnight. I’m not the type to jump out of a plane, don’t like roller-coasters, heck, I don’t even like the gamble of the share market. But, at a time in my life where I was lost and needed change I took the ultimate chance. What I gave myself in that flick-of-a-coin decision was a life that has made me strong and resilient. I never imagined driving a tractor, let alone owning one. Marking lambs was eye opening and I surprised myself with many skills I never suspected I would have - can throw a fleece with the best of them. There’s been drought, fires, floods, mice plagues and a pandemic. I started a business and became a mum. It’s taken perseverance, accountability and humility and at times I have wanted to take the easy path and just leave. Stubbornness is my best and worst trait, it drives others crazy but has served me well here - life on the land rewards the patient. Reunited. A cheeky juvenile magpie and its sibling STOLE one of my running shoes. I was on the back deck, eating breakfast. They kept flying over me and the dogs played with them- they + the dogs are hysterical. It was awesome too as the family were singing to each other. I smiled until one of the cheeky magpies grabbed one of my trainers from on-top of the drying line and took off with it. I pulled on my wellingtons and searched every corner of the property where they have been playing. Try finding a grey- green trainer in a green field… gah!! The cheeky magpie released it up by my studio shed which makes me believe it knows more about me than I can say I know about it. The dogs thought it was a great game, running around looking in the grass while I continued to yell at the magpie. Yes, I yelled at it and followed it back to the tree overlooking the deck from where it planned its thievery… It allowed me to get really close to it as I continued to tell it off. Both juveniles haunted my breakfast plate earlier and like the dogs, I told them ‘this is not for you’. Happy Easter from this quartet of young boys! Little Stormy arrived on Good Friday as the storm blew in. Can you see his doting mama not too far away? I got my bucket list item checked off with witnessing a text book goat birth too! Stormy was not wanting to stand and nurse so we had to carry him inside to warm him up overnight. Herthel was up all night tending to the little guy. Thankfully he turned a corner and was happily reunited with his mama. The Fernie Family; last September I drove out to their home property to the west and captured this clan on their station. Emma took her Dad out the afternoon before and hunted for the perfect spot for their photos, settling on this stunning bottle tree that’s probably been growing for generations. I’m adamant they couldn’t have picked a better spot. We hid in its shade and I sighed about the light that glowed through the leaves and the way this family banters and jokes with each other. Then as the sun set we dashed through gates and gully’s to get to the flats for the most glorious sunset, with cattle dotting the horizon and dust kicking under boots. Going through wrapping up my hard-drive, I realised I never shared this afternoon with you. Last September was a highlight of 2023, two trips out west marked my first travel photographer moments & fulfilled a secret dream of capturing a family on their own property. Yep, that happened 🥹 Ps. Picture 2 is one of my favourites of the whole year.

After my little shift at @hutchandhide I get to trudge through knee high snow drifts down to our buck’s pen. The plow got stuck plowing out our path to them during the storm earlier in the week so we don’t want to risk doing that again so through the drifts we go. In the dark, with my husband, a flashlight and sled of straw in tow we will get their bedding situated before the deep freeze. I am going to call this a Saturday evening date. There might be some cursing and cold body parts, but we signed up for this. We’ll look back at these times fondly as “the good ‘ol days” and laugh or cry as we reminisce. Eventually we’ll have better systems in place, but for now we are trudging, cursing, and shivering with love and determination to care for these animals and live this lifestyle we are choosing. #farmchores #thiscountrylife #snowstorm

Snow removal was tough today. The 15" we received was followed by several hours of rain, condensing it into 5 waterlogged inches. It wasn't a jubilant time, but I enjoyed the warmth 40F degrees and no wind. But it was crazy heavy to shovel from the walkways and deck. My brother Tim fixing to put this Case Trapper to work. Trapping and hound hunting were historically the methods used for keeping these mesopredator populations in check. Now, disease and cars seem to be their biggest threat. Believe it or not, hound hunters and trappers can coexist in the same space with the advent of the dog proof trap. They’re easy to use and cheaper to feed than a hound. It’s upper 40’s and mud city one day and 20’s and blowing sideways the next. Wisconsin has had a very confused start to winter. On one hand I’d love a white Christmas, but on the other hand I’ve appreciated the moderate temperatures as my husband is recovering from foot surgery so I’m a one woman show making sure the water is filled and the electric buckets are clean and doing their job, hay feeders are topped off in the buck and doe pens, and Lupine gets her love. Despite the added steps, I’m thankful I get to take care of these animals and I’m able to hold down the fort. Welcoming longer days and bipedalism in my better half. P.S.
