I used to feel like if I could just get my toes in the sand, I’d feel more relaxed. Less tired. So I would find myself dreaming of vacations while I cooked dinner or did the dishes. I also found myself sneaking that same philosophy into my everyday too. I would binge rom coms on Netflix or scroll through Instagram, thinking that rest on the couch for a short time would give me the energy I needed to get through the rest of my day. What I didn’t realize was, I was always looking for ways to escape my reality. It was no way to live. Except it was the only way I knew how to live. Until God crashed my whole paradigm of what rest looks like. It wasn’t about finding rest like some sort of treasure hunt. It was about receiving rest from God so my soul wasn’t so weary. It was about refreshing my soul in His presence. Yesterday, I saw six grieving clients, walked to and from work, and returned home energized. Today, I am providing a private mentoring session to a grief therapist. Some people think I'm crazy for caring so much and working so hard... But the reason I care so much is because I know what it's like to struggle with people grieving. It can drain your energy as a professional. It got so bad for me in July of 2021, I actually considered closing my private practice. So, when I learned to recognize, recalibrate, and restore my energy in the midst of a grieving client's story, I realized that I want every therapist to be able to feel energized at the end of their day. Storytelling: Follicular Edition. One of the ways we could facilitate Alex Garland’s storytelling on “Civil War” was aesthetically, through progression and deterioration. With Joel, played by Wagner Moura, we needed to show not only the passage of time, but also the weariness he took on as each cataclysmic event took place. Since it was filmed in a mostly linear fashion, we were able to start him out clean shaven, and slowly let him grow out in stages, maintained by the @philipsnorelco One Blade (and nurturing the shaved areas underneath by using both the Eltron Shave Stick and the @hannismooth Shave Pillow, dependent on humidity for that particular day). We also slowly “gaunted” him out, to reflect the weariness endured through the road trip, achieved with the @maqpro palette. End Result = Aesthetic Storytelling. It Didn’t Come Gift Wrapped Not Every Gift is Gift Wrapped and Tied with a Bow. But a gift is a gift… I pray this word will encourage you and be a great help that you receive it and release it before those who need these truths. Remember this: Sometimes our answers are found in our own pleas. Let me explain using the example found in Psalms 43. David cried out: “For You are the God of my strength; why do You cast me off? Why do I go mourning BECAUSE of the oppression of the enemy?” (Psalms 43:2) God had not cast David off... quite the opposite. David had gotten his focus off of God and onto the weighty words and wicked ways of the enemy. This shift in focus made him question God, but he did not question himself and his misplaced attention. He used the phrase, “BECAUSE of the oppression of the enemy...” Notice how he blamed the enemy and questioned God’s faithfulness but took no blame for his weighty spirit. David is having an old-fashioned pity party. Remember... pity parties are from the devil and they always make us unproductive and we blame everyone for our misery but ourselves. Don't miss the evidence of God’s chastening love. This is what was going on. God had not cast off or abandoned His servant. Not at all... He was loving on him. What did God do? Exactly what He tells us He will do. What God did was remove His perfect peace from David, ONLY to reveal that he had redirected his attention off of God and onto the ungodly (Isaiah 26:3). This chastening love seemed, at the moment, as if God had cast him off, but He hadn’t. God was turning David back to Himself so that He might restore and reinforce his trust and peace. The absence of God’s perfect peace worked (Hebrews 12:1-11)... and it had David seeking and asking the Lord to “send out His light and truth! Let them lead me, let them bring me to You and where You’re working. Then I will abide in Your presence and purpose... You are my God, my exceeding joy. Yes, I will praise You with my life, O God, my God.” (Psalms 43:3-4) God’s discipline is always redemptive... that He might deliver, mend, feed, and clothe us with His royal garments (Psalms 103:1-5)…

I blocked my mom on Instagram in 2019. I used my Instagram for art, for an outlet to express things I didn't know how to put into words, It helped me get to know my depression. I didn't even have Instagram until college, And there is something in documenting myself, hitting post, and feeling it fly out of me and into the internet Oblivion that was strangely comforting. I felt lighter. I felt heavier when my mom would grill me if the post got too raw or dark. If the quotes I shared were too sad. She'd asked me why I posted such dark creepy stuff, she asked me if my life was really so bad, she'd ask me if I still loved Jesus. These questions from someone you don't trust are invasive and unsafe and so I blocked her after seeking counsel with my counselor and best friends. She found out, of course. February 12th, 2019, I'd just gotten out of the shower and wrapped myself in a towel and she threw open the door demanding to know if I'd blocked her on Instagram. (We weren't really allowed privacy so her barging in was not a huge surprise occurrence. Ew right?) I said yes. I still remember the way she turned away in silence that was absolutely icy. Fuming. I could see the fury in her aura. The silence was the scariest part. I shook. She didn't speak to me for two weeks, impressive considering I still lived at home. When she finally did lay into me, yelling and crying, victimizing herself, the same old charade I know by heart but block out, she said those words that won't leave me. She told me her finding out I blocked her on Instagram hurt her more than if she'd found out I'd committed suicide. I remember when she said it, the way my heart fell and dissolved into black. That's not the thing to say to someone ever, but especially to the kid that's been suicidal for years now. That had gotten close recently. Fast forward 5 years, I'm sitting on the kitchen floor typing up yet another ballad to post to strangers on the Internet, hoping to heaven and hell it makes this piece lighter to bear.
