In the 1850’s brickworks were developed on the edge of Sandford, near Wareham, which grew into the impressive Sandford Factory. From the clay extracted from Morden Bog its efforts to produce fine china failed so instead produced a plethora of additional tiles, drainpipes and pots. A tramway connected the factory to the main London to Weymouth railway line. The pottery shut in the 1960’s and the chimney demolished with explosives in 1979, the site now a residential estate, but an old kiln still survives on the opposite side of the A351. Great Ovens Nature Reserve was extensively quarried during the peak production times of the brickworks but has since created a unique environment suitable for a range of species including rare reptiles and amphibians. Today it is managed by the amphibian and reptile conservation trust. Gore Heath and Morden Bog. Circle the magical woodland, forest and heathland of Gore Heath and Morden Bog. The spiritual landscape of the Bronze Age became heavily farmed. The underlying clay was quarried and supplied bricks, tiles, pots and drainpipes for local buildings while the peat and heather provided heating and bedding. But the destruction of the soil, caused by all the activity, led to the growth of naturally acidic plants, abandoned quarries filled with water to create wildlife bogs and the habitat became a home to a range of rare species. Weave through the trees, circling deep dark ponds, crossing wooden bridges and cutting through patches of heathland. Pass a memorial, a lookout tower and a hidden lodge to then skim Morden Park with its elegant lake and waterfall buried in the forest. Return along the undulating path that borders the River Sherford all on easily accessible tracks apart from the odd raised tree root and muddy puddle! area, once dense with wild woodland, was inhabited by nomadic hunter gatherers before it was slowly cleared for agricultural purposes. Burial mounds from the Bronze Age rise from the ground, some still waiting to be discovered. The soil was farmed so intensively it lost its nutrients making it a perfect environment for the development of the heathland. Heather (Calluna vulgaris) and Gorse (Ulex europaeus) colonised the landscape which was then gently grazed, ensuring the future production of peat for fuel and heather for animal bedding, amongst many other uses. The heathland stretched from the Isle of Purbeck, across south Dorset to Dorchester, much of which has since been developed. Thomas Hardy was able to walk from his birthplace in Higher Bockhampton, through the heath he called Egdon, to arrive at the coast without leaving the surrounding heather. The heathland today is heavily managed by a number of authorities including The Wildlife Trust, Natural England and Forestry England. Today, I need to unwind and decompress. Tempted to sit on the sofa in peace, I opted for a short run, and it was exactly what I needed! The feel of my feet pounding on the uneven earth, the sight of nature's colours and shapes, the sounds, and the smell of nature. The feeling of air in my lungs and heart pumping in my chest. The feeling of peace and joy soon followed. Nature is such a healing power! Although Woodlarks nest on the ground, often the best way to spot them is to look towards the sky! Woodlarks are fond of surveying their surroundings from a perch, so it’s useful to look towards the top of tall pine and birch trees. They’ll often sing to announce their presence! You may see our wardens out and about with spotting scopes and binoculars, so if you’re looking to spot one of our #heathland or #forestry birds, please do feel free to ask to use this kit. They’ll be happy to give you a demonstration 😊 #ThamesBasinHeaths #WoodlarkWanderings

Heathland (I think?), birch forests, and Saxifrage in some of the most biodiverse regions of Iceland. Iceland is perhaps the most barren, desolate, and hostile place I’ve ever visited. While deforestation has played a role in making this environment feel so lifeless, the unforgiving atmosphere of the Icelandic landscape is due primarily to the relentless forces of nature. Past volcanic eruptions, glaciers and glacial flooding, and a relatively volatile climate all contribute to making much of Iceland a very inhospitable and even violent land. And still life finds a way. Moisture is a key driver of heath diversity 🌱 Changes in precipitation due to climate change, as well as altered hydrology (the movement and availability of water) due to urbanisation can potentially impact these ecosystems. Scientists from @usc.australia have studied the role of abiotic features within Australia’s Sunshine Coast heathlands, important ecosystems which are currently under threat from urban development. They compared a variety of substrates, moisture levels and topographic features across rocky peaks and dry dune heaths to determine the abiotic factors associated with diversity and species distinctiveness. Their findings suggest that in order to maintain the integrity and diversity of these heathlands, the protection of refuge areas and management of hydrological changes will be critical. Some might wonder why I use specific colours over and over again and how I‘ve chosen them, so I thought I do a little series about the decision process and what inspired me. First of all, I love the freedom that comes with less of choices and as an artist I always loved to work with a stripped down color palette. Second, I love to work with colors I feel natural drawn to. I was always fascinated by heathlands, because although most of them are cultural landscapes and shaped by human actions, they are home to endangered species nowadays. Last year I visited Læsø, the largest island in the North Sea bay of Kattegat and had the chance to stroll through the most beautiful heathland I have ever been. That’s why it became my inspiration nr.1🌿 #natureart #heathland #heath #artistinspired #natureartist #inspiredbynature #womenwhodraw #whatinspiresme #natureillustrationart
