Tafod y Neidr / Adder's tongue Ophioglossum vulgatum Finally got to see this amazing little fern for the first time, then I see it twice in one week! I think they're like buses... 😂 One of the oldest known ferns, with a unique morphology and life cycle. The sporophyte stage occurs above ground and consists of a simple leaf blade and a single fertile spike. The gametophyte stage is subterranean and gathers energy through an association with mycorrhizal fungi. There are 3 species of Ophioglossum found in the UK (the other two being O. lustanicum and O. azoricum and are not common). One down... hehe. So happy to see this plant at work @treborthgarden thanks to @natalie_chivers, and at Wylfa Head thanks to Stephen Roberts and the extremely knowledgeable Nigel Brown. One last fact, that Nigel imparted today - one species of Ophioglossum (O. reticulatum) the has the highest recorded chromosome count of any organism! Welsh holy wells and springs. 1. Ffynnon Eilian. This is on the Anglesey coastal path between Amlwch and Llaneilian. It is closely associated with the church in Llaneilian, which is dedicated to Saint Eilian. It is rumoured that this is a cursing well, as Saint Eilian's pet deer was killed by a grey hound. The well is also associated with cures. The associated church is also worth a visit. The rood screen is dated from the late 15th century and has a skeleton (with a warning) painted on it. Last Saturday we had our last lunch on Ynys Mon/Anglesey (for a while😉). We popped into the @harbourfrontbistro and we had a fantastic meal. It took a little time for me to choose as there are so many tasty options but I eventually went for the salt and pepper flat iron steak and Paul for the burger. I have to say the steak was incredible!! So tasty but absolutely tender. It came on a sizzling platter covered with spring onions and chilli on a bed of roasted peppers and onions . I'd highly recommend this. Paul said his burger was one of the best he'd had . Especially as it comes with a sourdough bun instead of a brioche one. We also snuck in a cheeky pud each. I had a delightful sticky toffee pudding (light as a feather) and custard while Paul opted for the salted caramel brownie. Both just the lovel sweet hit we wanted. The service here is fantastic and very friendly. Also it has a wonderful view of the harbour so you get to look out at beautiful blue seas. Taking inspiration from the blooming hedgerows and natural areas in the grounds of the school, they discovered together the unique relationship between words and nature. Welsh language poetry is one of the youth categories for the 2024 Llangoed Flower Show, we hope for many inspiring entries! A visit and poetry workshop with one of Wales’ Children’s Poets.
