It was such a special moment for me personally when I reached the summit and it was quite magical just sitting there for ages, taking in the views and watching the rain clouds sweep past us to the north. Suilven - one of Scotland’s most iconic wee hills. I remember hearing tales from my late grandfather and uncle about this mountain from when I was young. They would refer to the long approach and its striking outline - it sounded altogether rather frightening! Before returning to this magnificent corner of the Highlands for the first time as an adult, I had my sights set firmly on a few of the other mountains in the area. The exceedingly close contours of the Fiddler had drawn my attention during a routine nose-to-sheet surveillance of the maps; likewise had the bizarre pinnacles of Stac Pollaidh, that I had observed in the multitude of images I had seen from other photographers. It wasn’t until I arrived; and embarked upon the obligatory exploration around the Lochinver coastline, that I realised who the real star of the show was round these parts… If you’re one of the lucky ones who have driven along that road, I’m sure you’ll understand me. Suilven disappears and reappears frequently as you wind up, over, down and around the nooks and crannies of the lochan-laden landscape - each time with a new aspect. I really got the sense that it was watching me with as much inquisitiveness as I was it! Despite all of the wonderful beauty surrounding me, my attention was drawn magnetically back to Suilven - over and over again. This mountain is rather small compared to others in the Highlands, indeed to others within just a few miles of it too! One thing is for certain though, there are few that match it for character and allure. Camping beneath the North West Buttress of its highest top, Caisteal Liath, was a real highlight from my most recent trip to Assynt - before heading up for the sunrise the next morning. I didn’t get the light on this occasion, but I was so grateful for the cloud lifting off the summit shortly after dawn. I’m sure we shall meet again, Sully! Bringing in Easter ATOP SUILVEN, one of Scotland’s most iconic mountains. Known as the Pillar, its distinctive shape was sculpted by glaciers, revealing layers upon layers of Torridonian sandstone and Lewisian Gneiss. Creating a geological masterpiece! The hike really was summit special 20km of cracking views. I’m still as buzzing as a kid in a sweet shop! We were incredibly lucky with the conditions, as spring weather often forces you off the top of the higher mountains quickly. But we were able to savour the views for hours. WHAT AN ADVENTURE. Day 4 was pretty mega! 😎☀️🏔️ With the weather set to be the best day of the trip (no winds, sunshine, warmth) we decided to make the trip up to Ullapool to do the loop around Stac Pollaidh, it’s one we’ve driven to a few times just to see but haven’t actually left the van for so this time we got out and hiked! It was a pretty special one for me because the big ol mountain to the left in the first photo also in photo 5 on its own, is Suilven, it’s one hike I’ve always dreamt of doing and have had a bit of a fascination with for years. On our first trip to Scotland in early 2019 we attempted it with plans to camp up there but the weather was dreadful and we actually only made it to the Falls of Kirkaig before turning back around and finding a campsite. Unfortunately it’s a 13ish mile hike there and back and so it’s not something I think we’ll be able to do with Pips now, I’m not totally letting the dream go as we could do it as a camp like originally planned and it wouldn’t be too bad for her but obviously we have to consider her health at the time and it’s not something I’ll ever be risking so just being able to actually see Suilven from this viewpoint filled that cup of being there with Pippa and seeing it in the background of our hike. Our friend had actually hiked Suilven that day with Gus and Gwen and so we met up with him after our hikes and he very kindly brought us some of the @lochinverlarder pies on his way past (Al had seen it mentioned on @black.crag YouTube) and I have to say by far the best pies I’ve ever had and I’m pretty hyped they deliver 😅🙌🏻🎉 we followed it up with a trip to a local beach, fire pit and a good run around with the dogs to see our friend off. It was a very wholesome day, I honestly never wanted to leave.

Having typed furiously all through the winter – is spring ever going to arrive? – I've now finished writing my next book: '111 Places in the Scottish Highlands that you shouldn't miss'. It's been a real labour of love. Shooting photos for the book required a lot of driving (about 3000 miles I reckon) and weeks away from home. Tomorrow's Promise. Named because that's what is was. A promise to go up the mountain Suilven with and for my middle daughter. This view of Suilven is seen when approaching it from the east, whilst driving the winding single track road that leads west from Lairg. It looms suddenly into view and I will be honest here and tell you I swore on seeing what I had promised to undertake the following day. But here's the thing. I rarely promise anything. So when I do its important. So yes we climbed Suilven. . And today it's apt too, to remember other promises. It's mother's day in the uk and I remember finding out I was expecting each one of my 3 daughters and promising them my love and protection.
