Quando lo sceneggiatore Noah Hawley presentò la sua bibbia di serie per sviluppare Fargo (2014-2024), chiuse il documento con un’intera pagina su chi o cosa fosse Mike Yanagita. Scelta indubbiamente coraggiosa, che sottolinea tuttavia l’importanza di questo personaggio. Ma, in effetti: chi o cosa è Mike Yanagita? Per chi non ricordasse, nel film Fargo (1996) Mike Yanagita è un ex compagno di scuola di Marge, la poliziotta protagonista interpretata dalla grande e irreprensibile Frances McDormand. I due si incontrano per la prima volta dopo tanto tempo e, in una scena tra l’imbarazzante e il grottesco, Yanagita le racconta che sua moglie è morta di cancro e per questo si sente disperatamente solo. 3 minuti di scena e fine della storia. Un paio di sequenze più tardi, però, Marge scopre che la moglie di Yanagita non è assolutamente morta, che non è assolutamente sua moglie e che lui è assolutamente uno psicopatico. La trama del film prosegue e di Mike Yanagita non si ha mai più notizia. Così, all’apparenza, la sua presenza risulta decisamente insensata e del tutto casuale. Quindi la domanda diventa: perché Mike Yanagita? Perché in un thriller con già molti personaggi e linee di trama intrecciate, esattamente a metà film si aggiunge Mike Yanagita che chiama la protagonista chiedendole di incontrarsi? Il personaggio non si inserisce nelle logiche classiche della narrazione cinematografica, dove ogni elemento è un tassello necessario per costruire e sviluppare la trama. Anzi. Mike Yanagita è presentato come un qualsiasi episodio di vita comune: imprevedibile, circoscritto e fine a sé stesso. Accade e basta. Eppure il suo inserimento nell’economia del film non è per nulla casuale. . I really liked the almost absurdist cyclical plot and characters. So many laugh out loud moments and ones that wrinkled my brain and spirit. I remember when I first watched A Serious Man I was completely baffled by it. This is the Coen Brothers version of a midlife crisis movie and I didn’t know what to make of it. Nevertheless, I was intrigued, even after the film’s very abrupt ending. Over the years, I found myself entranced by the film, revisiting it more and more, eager to discover what it all meant. Typically, I don’t like to give anything away about a movie but in this case I think it’s warranted. I believe the film is ultimately about acceptance. Many of us are desperate to find a deeper meaning to the mysteries of life and our place within it. We can look to religion, or logic, or mathematics or science or probabilities for answers but this will ultimately prove to be an act of futility. The answers may very well be out there but we will probably never uncover them and it’s important to be okay with that because before you know it, it’s all over. Una sola vista panoramica: una distesa sconfinata di neve Le camere sono occupate da: un onesto uomo ebreo, appena scaricato dalla moglie, vessato dai capricci di un dio muto; un disoccupato strafatto che sorseggia White Russian disteso su un tappeto che non è il suo; un barbiere troppo stanco per credere di aver ucciso un uomo; infine un atavico uomo pallido, con un ludico caschetto di capelli sulla testa, pronto a dar vita al caos. Ogni uomo cerca qualcosa. Ognuno di loro è in cerca di qualcosa. Chi del senso della vita, chi di una scappatoia dalla monotonia, chi di una valigetta e chi di uno stramaledettissimo tappeto. Nessuno di loro dovrebbe essere lì. Nessuno di loro non potrebbe che essere lì. Lì dove quei due imprevedibili demiurghi dei Coen volevano metterli. All’interno di un’universo vigile ma muto. Che posiziona e si allontana. Storie e personaggi in cerca di un genere tanto quanto indifferenti al senso. Opere che si perdono nella storia di un cinema che rigetta spiegazioni e motivazioni. Perché non è finito solo il tempo per i “che cos’è?”, ma anche quello del “che senso ha?”. Così i film dei coen anelano al senso di un sogno che culla l’autunno di un poliziotto; alla visione di un riquadro che quadro non è e che autore, forse, non ha; all’impeto di un uragano che finalmente rivela il principio della fede al serio uomo ebreo: l’insensatezza. A SERIOUS MAN (2009) WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: Joel Coen & Ethan Coen CINEMATOGRAPHY: Roger Deakins • A Serious Man is an incredible film. What's interesting is that, just like Burn After Reading, A Serious Man is a little random at times and can be confusing to anyone trying to make sense out of all the various symbols and ideas as well as the opening prologue and closing image. And yet, where Burn After Reading left me empty and unsatisfied, A Serious Man blew me away... There is a great scene in the film in which the main character is talking to a rabbi, trying to get some help with his life that’s falling apart. The rabbi tells him this story about a dentist who saw something on a patient's teeth once and became obsessed with figuring out what it meant. When the story ends the man asks the rabbi what ended up happening and the rabbi basically responds, "nothing. he just went on with his life." Using that story as a metaphor for a reading of the film, one could take away that not every symbol or moment is connected with everything else - and that there aren't always answers to the questions. Sometimes there are just more questions (like the last moment of the film which left me exhilarated, but also left me with - you guessed it - more questions). However, as I say that, I almost want to take it back, because I just have a hard time thinking that the Coen brothers would do that. They are famous for their meticulousness in their film making and so a film without answers or a well thought out meaning to every single image and scene seems almost silly to say. But, I said it. I would tell you what the film was about, but that wouldn't do it justice. The basic plot outline is actually rather regular and uninteresting if whittled down to its elevator pitch. Two images from the same scene in the Coen Brothers film A Serious Man. One photo showing the talented and kind actor Micheal Stuhlbargs emotions clearly and one that is more obscure but which still coveys a similar sense of danger and confusion. What makes one photo better than another? What, if any, information was I trying to convey to you with this photo? As a photographer you are the first one to make those decisions, firstly when you take the photo, secondly when you edit the photo and thirdly when you share the photo. At that point you let the viewer make their own decisions and now your opinion has the same weight as anyone else’s. We were in a studio for this scene. The F/X’s department made the rain and wind…the lighting and grip crew shaped the light, and slightly rocked the car to make it look like it was moving. The hair, makeup and wardrobe department assured that Micheal looked exactly what the moment called for. Micheal brought his acting skills and Coen’s made suggestions to help him convey the emotions that they wanted for that moment in the story. I benefit from all those people’s hard work because their skills are seen in every frame. The front photo was the obvious 1st choice for me. We see that it’s a car, Micheals face, and the whole story is fairly clear. After that I just moved around the car, hunting for more images. Sometimes I’m directed by other photos I’ve taken, or other images that I’ve seen. Most often it’s just me experimenting, being curious, pushing to find another interesting frame. I try to delay my own judgement for the editing process, that way, I don’t become complacent and give up before the possibility of finding just one more good frame. A Serious Man. 2009. Быстрый обзор. Экзистенциальная комедия об экзистенциальном кризисе от братьев Коэнов, с зудящей еврейской вудиалленовской атмосферой, правда практически без романтики. Это наверное специфическая еврейско-американская тема и многое из фильма близко именно американским евреям. Но и в целом смотреть на происходящее, если не смешно и несколько уныло, но довольно забавно и чувствуется добрая ирония. Снято и сыграно хорошо. Руки мастеров. Майкл Стальерг интересно изобразил своего внешне стереотипного персонажа. Сюжет. Главный персонаж по имени Ларри Гопник, оказывается есть такая еврейская фамилия, типичный маленький, слабый человек, не уверенный в себе и с кучей эмоциональных и жизненных проблем. Вроде бы, с обывательской точки зрения, всё не так и плохо - работа преподавателя, семья, какие-то интересы и увлечения. Но везде происходят неприятности, которые раздирают мирок Ларри на части. При этом в слабости Ларри кроется и внутренняя мягкая сила, не требующая маскулинности. Хотя, иногда мужика всё же надо как-то включать. А жизнь такая штука, что рано или поздно вынесет на спокойную воду. Надо только подождать и слиться с реальностью. А другие люди тебе вряд-ли сильно помогут. Короче, такой мирный фатализм. Фильм не плохой, но если честно не знаю зачем его кому-то сейчас смотреть. Хотя, наверное попробовать можно, что бы проникнуться этой ироничной атмосферой, сбивающий тревожный мандраж в сторону спокойного принятия. Сейчас это возможно и актуально. After both of them went on their own solo ventures with ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ and ‘Drive Away Dolls’, The Coen Brothers are reuniting for a horror film. In a recent interview while promoting ‘Drive Away Dolls’, Ethan mentioned that him and Joel have finished a script and plan to direct it very soon, saying “It’s a pure horror film, and it gets very bloody. If you like Blood Simple, I think you’ll enjoy it”. . . Now, The Coen Brothers are are in my top 10 favorite directors, with ‘Fargo’ being in my top 40 favorite films of all time. There’s many of their works I love, with majority being 4 stars or higher, it did make me happy seeing Ethan compare it to their debut, ‘Blood Simple’, which is a fantastic and gritty noir and in my top 5 of their work. Perentorio, improvviso, Kafka scrive una volta nei Diari che «tutta questa letteratura» (intendendo in primo luogo la propria) era una «attacco alla frontiera», anzi «avrebbe potuto svilupparsi in una nuova dottrina segreta, in una cabbala» (e aggiungeva, con una precisazione che dice il fondo del suo pensiero sull’ebraismo moderno: «se non si fosse messo in mezzo il sionismo»). Nel frammento precedente l’«attacco alla frontiera» viene esplicitato come «attacco all’ultima frontiera terrena». Ma in che modo Kafka era giunto a quella espressione? Il frammento dove compare si presenta come il resoconto di una crisi acutissima e soverchiante, sopravvenuta nel gennaio del 1922, poco prima che si avviasse la stesura del Castello: «Nell’ultima settimana è accaduto come un crollo, così totale come forse soltanto in quella notte di due anni fa, non ho esperienza di altri esempi. Tutto sembrava finito e anche oggi non sembra qualcosa di molto diverso». Ma che cosa era avvenuto? «In primo luogo: crollo, impossibilità di dormire, impossibilità di rimanere sveglio, impossibilità di sopportare la vita, o più precisamente la sequenza della vita». Ciò che produce il crollo è una lacerazione nel tessuto del tempo. Il tempo esterno e il tempo interno hanno ora due passi diversi: «Gli orologi non si corrispondono, quello interno va a caccia in un modo diabolico o demoniaco o comunque inumano, quello esterno prosegue nel suo corso usuale, stentato». Non solo è opposta la velocità, ma la direzione: così «i due diversi mondi si separano e continuano a separarsi o comunque si lacerano in una maniera atroce». La parola decisiva qui è già risuonata: la caccia. Alla fine, Kafka però riconosce che quella caccia è «soltanto un’immagine». Ma con che cosa si può sostituire un’immagine? Solo con un’altra immagine. Che sarà questa: quella caccia potrebbe essere chiamata «attacco all’ultima frontiera terrena». Quindi un’immagine potenziata – e ancor più cifrata.
