Today’s track is Red Frame/White Light by Orchestral Music in the Dark. It starts like Heart of Glass but then the tinniest of beats snaps us out of it. Next it’s the melody - a luscious keyboard motif, underpinned by a simple bassline. Vocal next and it’s backers first - that flat bleat of the title that beckons Andy in to do it properly - a sort of mid-Atlantic drawl spouting out the telephone number of their local telephone box. It’s a sweet melody, fidgety before running up and down the scale. Suddenly we break for a different feel - a more dramatic and measured keyboard line over a slapped beat which climbs very slowly. Fortunately this is a brief distraction and we soon resume the bright and breezy keyboard soon joined by the wide eyed vocal. We are not completely out of the woods - we do drop again into the tiptoe through the dark woods before a simulated ringing tone takes us to the fade. Lovely slice of early electronica - simple and naive and yet completely exciting like we are entering a new world of robotic dancing. Klaus Schulze - Timewind (1975 - this Japanese 2xSHMCD pressing 2018) I picked this up in Kanazawa, Japan, last month. I’d originally purchased the record on release but I never liked it so when punk came along it was culled from my collection. It’s grown in stature over the years and I’ve long thought I should re-evaluate. It sounds like Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra* even though Schulze’s time in TD predated that record and their electronic / sequencer sound. The album is dedicated to Richard Wagner: his hometown (Bayreuth) and his villa there (Wahnfried) are referenced in the track titles. Schulze would later honour Wagner further by usuing the alias Richard Wahnfried for several projects. The bonus tracks on the second disc include alternate takes from the album sessions which means you can immerse yourself in time wind (sic!) for twice the time! This tremendous debut album, which points more towards the early albums of Klaus Schulze via Ash Ra Tempel & experimental electronica of Klaus Schulze! This is a European limited edition 45 RPM reissue from 2021, which I took a chance and bought recently. Luckily it sounds great and is dead silent 👌🏻 The album was recorded in a rented factory in Berlin in October 1969, using just a two-track Revox tape recorder. Electronic Meditation is the only Tangerine Dream album to feature the line-up of Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze and Conrad Schnitzler. Neu! - Neu! 75 2010 German repress on Grönland Records. Their third studio album, recorded and mixed at Conny Plank's studio between December 1974 and January 1975. It was released in 1975 by Brain Records. This album saw Neu! regroup after a few years' break, during which time Michael Rother had worked together with Cluster in the krautrock supergroup Harmonia. By this time, Rother and bandmate Klaus Dinger had somewhat diverged in their musical intentions for the band, Dinger preferring a more aggressive, rock-influenced style than Rother's ambient predilections. As a result, they agreed to a compromise: Side 1 of the record was recorded in the old Neu! style, as a duo, with Dinger playing drums. For the pieces on side 2, Dinger switched to guitar and lead vocals, recruiting his brother Thomas and Hans Lampe to play drums (simultaneously). Todays track is Autobahn by Kraftwerk. Relax - we are looking at the single edit, not the full version. Same opening though - that old motor turning over and pulling away before the sharp double dob of keyboard and we move off - a deep bass burble bed with a hugely distorted vocal before those terrific chiming chords appear for the first time. The hairs on the back of your neck are up as those wide chords wash over you. Then we get the descending run off, like a tickover as we reset. A sweeping chord jolts us back in and this time we get the vocal - sweet and simple with a lovely harmony at the end. It’s all you need - conveying the simple pleasure of driving the Autobahn while the electronica does the work. The descending line is back, together with a lovely electronic swirl. Now we settle back for the first of the genius sections that recreates that wonderful feeling of freedom on the open road - this time it’s a lovely sunny melody that ticks along - we can all ease back in our floral print dresses. Back to those chimes as the chorus steps up. We then reset again and this time it’s electronic percussion recreating the noise of various vehicles passing at speed - and maybe a train (?!) - before a wobbly dob joins to add momentum. A higher pitched keyboard brings us a car horn before another epic keyboard sweep brings the track to a close. It feels like an excerpt from something grand but this was Autobahn for me before I heard the full version. I was completely mesmerised by something strange and wonderful. It remains a track that blows my mind every time. Can alumnus Holger Czukay plays bass on three tracks: "Feedback 66", "Missi Cacadou", and "Two Oldtimers". Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius joined forces with Neu! guitarist Michael Rother on the 1973 album Musik von Harmonia, and this Zucketzeit was published the following year, changing the sound towards more pop-oriented songs. Each composition is a little experimental gem. Todays track is Empire State Human by The Human League. A simple beat to start before a withering electronic tone kicks off the rolling melody. It kicks up and here comes Phil with a vocal line perfectly set for his booming baritone. It’s light and bouncy with its tongue pushed very firmly into its cheek. The lyrics are ridiculous but they go with it with spectacular results. The chorus is next and it’s a triumph. The melody is part nursery rhyme, part manga theme - it steps up and down, repeating “tall” and “wall” with a manic fervour. Phil leans in, obviously having the time of his life. As we hit the next verse, Phil starts to ham it up, speaking the first section, which ends with a sweet synthesised “at least”. He climbs back into the vocal before we sweep again into that glorious chorus. Martyn Ware, spitting that Phil is getting all the attention, starts a mantra to counter the chorus vocal but it’s Phil’s commitment that still dominates. We slip into a suitably angular keyboard solo -with mantra still part of the bed - before we get one more round at the chorus. Phil eventually stands down to give Martyn and Ian their moment, chanting through to the fade. Gloriously silly lyric to a terrific slice of prime early English indie electronica. Adonia is the solely record of the French band Ose. Released in 1978 by the label Egg Records. Ose was formed after the split of the band Heldon. I’ve learned about this album via YouTube algorithm some time ago and very pleased to have found a copy. Adonia is a very nice mix of early electronics, space rock with a pinch of New Age.
