2024, Day 123 (May 2) Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, NIGHTINGALES & BOMBERS This was their sixth studio album and they no longer had the long jams of their previous ones, choosing to go with shorter, more forceful rockers. They still had some excellent musicianship - none of that was sacrificed - but the tunes seemed more pop oriented. The lead-off track, “Spirits In The Night,” was written by Bruce Springsteen and would prove to be a breakout hit for the band. “Fat Nelly” kind of foreshadows the synth at the beginning of “Blinded By The Light,” which would be an even bigger hit for them a year later. There are only eight songs on the album, which clocks in at just about 38 minutes, and there isn’t a bad track among them. Ironically, a lot of people & groups who are corrupted by religion end up apologising for their sins. I chose to make the video look like a Rembrandt/Caravaggio painting. It's day 2 of #mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator : a record from a show you attended. This is obviously not a live album - I only own a Radiohead bootleg from a show I attended - but I remember buying this record at an Anathema gig at the merch, feeling absolutely euphoric. It was a great gig in Cologne in 2012, I really miss Anathema a lot. A Natural Disaster (2003) is an experimental and dark art rock album with some fantastic songs. Flying, the epic title track, Are You There? , Closer.... all classics! Or listen to the totally pissed-off eruption Pulled Under At 2000 Metres A Second! Or the calm and peaceful piano ballad Electricity...this record manages to be depressing and colourful, even hopeful at times. After A Natural Disaster the band basically disappeared for many years to finally return with their masterpiece We're Here Because We're Here (2010).
