BUTTERSCOTCH AND SODA. #littleaudrey #butterscotchandsoda #seymourkneitel #aleugster #1948 #larzbourne #billturner #winstonsharples #buddykaye #robertowen #billtytla #sambuchwald #izzysparber #maequestel #amandarandolph #harveycomics #famousstudios #cartoon #candy #family

OTD - March 28, 1964 - Warner Bros’ “The Incredible Mr Limpet”, directed by Arthur Lubin, was released (it premiered in January 1964). New York producer John Rose acquired the rights to Theodore Pratt’s unsuccessful 1942 book “Mr Limpet” in 1960, intending to adapt it into a live-action/animation hybrid film. Director Arthur Lubin was hired to direct the live-action sequences, and “The Andy Griffith Show” actor Don Knotts was cast as the film’s main character in 1962, his first lead role in a film. The film was shot in California, in and out of studios, including aboard a US Navy destroyer in Long Beach. Songs were provided by Sammy Fain and Harold Adamson.  "Mr Limpet's" animation (credited as "Special Piscatorial Effects") was assigned to the original Warner Bros animation studio, and would turn out to be its last work before being shut down for financial reasons in 1963. Although Rose originally considered Jack Kinney to supervise the animated sequences, disagreements between the two led to legendary animator Bill Tytla being hired instead. This would turn out to be Tytla’s last animating job; he fell ill during production and withdrew - his role was instead filled in by Robert McKimson and Hawley Pratt. “Mr Limpet” premiered at Florida's Weeki Wachee, where it was projected into a giant tank with live "mermaids" cavorting. It opened to generally positive reviews, but was a box-office flop, quickly being overshadowed by a more successful live-action/animation hybrid, Walt Disney's "Mary Poppins". Its popularity grew with TV airings in the following decades, and it remains a favorite among animation buffs. An homage to the film can be spotted in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” (1989); Mr Limpet makes a cameo at the end of the “Under the Sea” number. The late Stephen Hillenburg also supposedly studied the film's backgrounds as inspiration for those of "SpongeBob SquarePants". #johnrose #arthurlubin #theincrediblemrlimpet #theodorepratt #donknotts #carolecook #wwii #antinazi #warnerbroscartoons #billtytla #robertmckinson #hawleypratt #fish #marinelife #underwater #americananimation #animationhistory #fantasy #vintageanimation #animation #film

Baby Dumbo production drawing by Bill Tytla For the other films in Disney’s Golden Age, Tytla had been tasked with drawing the heavies. He animated Grumpy for “Snow White,” Stromboli in “Pinocchio,” and the Devil/Chernabog in “Fantasia.” Ready for a change, he was delighted to be able to animate the titular character of “Dumbo” (1941). While not the only character animator tasked with drawing the elephant protagonist, he did a lot of the more expressive scenes. Known for his powerful acting and volatile attitude that would come out in his characters, he showed his sensitive side in the bath time sequence of the film. This could be because he took inspiration from his infant son who loved playing in the tub. #2danimation #animationhistory #disneyhistory #dumbo #elephant #circus #billtytla

For the past few days I have talked about Bill Tytla and how great he was and even though he was not allowed to get back at Disney. I am not trying to be negative or to make people down, my intention is to talk the truth about an amazing artist’s life and also say that no matter how good you are, you can be rejected. Towards his last years, Bill came up with an idea for a film called “Mousethusala The World Oldest Mouse” And tried to shop around for a studio to produce it and sent to his friends at Disney who rejected it. He tried a few other places but no one wanted it. Many years after his death, his wife sent the sketches and story to Spielberg who also rejected it. I would LOVE to know what the story was and maybe it is a good one and it could be accepted today. So, if you had projects or yourself had been rejected, even a genius like Tytla was too. #billtytla #disneyanimation #disneyanimators #handdrawnanimation #2danimation #characteranimation

Many people ask me why I never worked for Disney again since I left in 2009 and my answer is “I don’t know, they never asked me again”! Well, I am in good company because they never got Bill Tytla back as well. The only difference, besides Tytla being a superior animator and all around artist, is that I don’t mind but he did, he really, really wanted to go back, it was his last wish. I got a few paragraphs that show a bit of what happened and a letter from Woolie Reitherman and you will see how they really did not want him back. If it happened to Tytla, a giant in the animation world, why it would not happen to the rest of us? The end of Tytla’s life was sad and as an artist, he was only happy while at Disney. Take a read. #billtytla #disneyanimators #disneyanimation #disneyanimationstudios #handdrawnanimation #2danimation

These past few days I have been reading about and studying the work of the amazing Bill Tytla. Look at these drawings and how powerful they are! Tytla is one of my favorites and I think he was the right artist at the right time at Disney, specially during the making of the first 4 features, Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia and Dumbo. It is very sad that he had to leave Disney and could never return, which was his dying wish, to return to Disney but the guys there at the time didn’t want him back. Very rare to see the caliber of his animation nowadays. These drawings are from John Canemaker’s site. #billtytla #disneyanimation #disneyanimationstudios #disneypinocchio #handdrawnanimation #traditionalanimation #2danimation

OTD - February 7, 1940 - Walt Disney's second feature-length film, "Pinocchio", was released. After the worldwide success of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), Walt became excited about the boundless possibilities of animation. He chose to adapt Carlo Collodi's classic for his next feature, but five months into production, he had all the work done to date scrapped because he found the bratty puppet unappealing. After a revision of the story and character, the film was put back into the works. Of the many episodes in Collodi's story, only three were retained in Disney's version : the puppet show, the Land of Toys and the Terrible Shark (changed to a whale). The Talking Cricket, originally a minor character, became the deuteragonist Jiminy Cricket, voiced by popular singer Cliff Edwards. Produced at the peak of Disney's Golden Age, "Pinocchio" is often regarded as the pinnacle of the studio's creativity, summing up a decade's learnings in storytelling, character and effects animation, technical advancements, and background art - animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston wrote : "for richness of handcrafted detail, 'Pinocchio' will never be surpassed". The multiplane shot of the village in the morning alone cost $48,000; nearly twice the cost of a then-standard short film. "Pinocchio" opened to rave reviews and was the first animated feature to win competitive awards, winning two Oscars for Best Score and Best Song ("When You Wish Upon A Star"). However, it was  a box-office bomb, mainly due to the foreign market closing during WWII. Its popularity rose with later reissues and it has since received praise as a landmark of film. In 1994, it was added to the National Film Registry for "cultural, historical or aesthetic significance", and it has topped many lists of the greatest animated films ever made. In Walt's own words : "In producing 'Pinocchio', we have tried to install all the entertainment values - humor, pathos, excitement and beauty - but even more important, we have sincerely tried to keep faith with the legions of people all over the world who have read the story and who love it". 200th post!

OTD - January 15, 1943 - Walt Disney's animated short "Education for Death : The Making of the Nazi", directed by Clyde Geronimo, was released. Adapted from the book by Gregor Ziemer, this was one of many government shorts produced by Disney during WWII. Walt had been accused of misusing the government's money on the short "The New Spirit" (1942), so he instead turned to the magazine Reader's Digest to finance "Education for Death". The film depicts the stages of life of German boys growing up in the Hitler youth, ultimately leading them to their death. The film's dark tones were compensated by moments of comic relief, including a retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" wherein a caricatured Adolf Hitler rescues an overweight Brunhilde, animated by Ward Kimball. Except for Art Smith's narration, all of the dialogue is told in German. Animators Frank Thomas and Milt Kahl reportedly hated working on this film, envying Kimball's assignments, while they "got these awful scenes of real kids, [...] and they're talking German, and on our readings it had all German". Thomas recalled the following anecdote : "Milt and I were going upstairs for some reason, and we were standing at the elevator. Milt said 'We ought to kick Walt right in the Ą$$ for doing this type of thing', and all of a sudden the doors opened, and there was Walt. So I couldn't resist, so I said, 'Here he is, go ahead!'" Like the studio's other wartime shorts (except the Latin American films), "Education for Death" was kept in the Disney vault and seldom shown for many years after its release due to its dated content, but it has received praise from film scholars and historians as one of the studio's finest shorts. In 1994, it received an honorable mention in the book "The 50 Greatest Cartoons" by Jerry Beck. #educationfordeath #gregorziemer #waltdisney #clydegeronimo #antinazi #wwii #wartimecartoons #propaganda #wardkimball #billtytla #frankthomas #miltkahl #sleepingbeauty #vintageanimation #vintagecartoons #animationhistory #classicanimation #classicdisney #classiccartoons #americananimation #cartoon

Bill Tytla (Ukrainian-American, 1904-1968) Self-Portrait, 1927 Oil on canvas Image Size: 9.5 x 8.25 inches Framed Size: 13.5 x 13 inches #billtytla #selfportrait #animator #disneyanimationstudios #disneyanimation #characteranimation #disney Vladimir William Peter Tytla, often referred to as Bill Tytla, was an American animator at the Disney studio in the 1930s and 1940s. Tytla is generally considered to be one of the greatest animators ever to work at the studio (Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston once said that there would never be an animator to replace him) and the first to give animated characters emotions. On Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, he and Fred Moore were put in charge of the animation of the seven dwarfs. Tytla focused particularly on the seven dwarfs; he animated Grumpy's reaction to a kiss from Snow White. He went on to animate three of Disney's most powerful characters: Stromboli in Pinocchio and Yen Sid and Chernabog in Fantasia, before moving on to the rather more sympathetic titular character of Dumbo. Like many of his characters, Tytla was a physically imposing man with a personality to match. His best friend at the studio was Art Babbitt. He participated in the Disney animators' strike; he was the only top animator besides Babbit to do so. After leaving Disney during World War II, he moved to New York to be an animator at the Terrytoons studio, followed by a stint as a director at Famous Studios. His last work before his death would be directing the animation for the 1964 Warner Bros. film The Incredible Mr. Limpet.

OTD - December 21, 1937 - Walt Disney's first feature-length film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", premiered at the Carthay Circle Theater. Dubbed "Disney's Folly" by critics for years up until then, the film made history as the first feature-length animated film in color and sound. Though not the first animated feature overall, it was the first to use the long format to craft a story worthy of the running time, therefore setting the standards for animated features to follow. Walt had the idea for an animated feature in 1933 and chose one of his longtime favorite stories, "Snow White". He informed his staff through progressive hints. Once he had their full attention, he got them in the swing by performing the entire story in a one-man show, something he never did again. Walt tasked David Hand with supervision, and his four most proven animators, Norm Ferguson, Fred Moore, Ham Luske and Bill Tytla, were made directing animators. Live-action reference was shot to aid the animators in drawing the human characters. Although the staff originally pictured the comedic Dwarfs at the film's core, a rough screening made it clear that the real drive of the story was the tension between Snow White and the Evil Queen. Three sequences surrounding the Dwarfs were therefore cut in favor of the story. As the December 1937 deadline approached, the studio scrambled to complete the film, with animators working unpaid overtime. The budget was originally estimated at $250,000; but grew to $1.5 million, forcing Walt to acquire support from the Bank of America.  When the film finally premiered, it was attended by several Hollywood notables and was a huge critical hit, proving that animation could sustain the public's attention for over an hour. The film went into general release in 1938 to worldwide success, becoming the highest-grossing sound film until "Gone With The Wind" (1939). In 1939, Walt was awarded a special Oscar, a regular statuette with seven smaller ones. In 1989, "Snow White" joined the National Film Registry, and in 2008 it was named the greatest American animated film ever by the AFI. As animator Ward Kimball recalled, "It's the best thing we ever did".

OTD - November 13, 1940 - Walt Disney's third feature-length film, "Fantasia", was released. The genesis of "Fantasia" was a planned Silly Symphony short with Mickey Mouse as Dukas's "Sorcerer's Apprentice". When Walt met conductor Leopold Stokowski by chance, Stokowski's orchestra was soon hired to perform the music. When the short's cost exceeded its potential profits, the project escalated into a feature-length collection of animated music, which Walt intended to introduce classical music to viewers of all ages through entertainment. Besides the "Sorcerer's Apprentice", the other retained pieces from the many considered were Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor", Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite", Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring", Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony", Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours", Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" and Schubert's "Ave Maria". Technicians developed a nine-channel recording system dubbed "Fantasound" to capture every individual aspect of the soundtrack, and for the film's premiere, the sound was split between 68 speakers dispersed throughout the hall for an immersive effect. Produced at the height of Disney's Golden Age, "Fantasia" is considered the peak of the studio's art. Landmarks include Oskar Fischinger's abstract figures, the Mushroom Dance (animated by Art Babbitt), the Dinosaur fight (done by Woolie Reitherman), the Henrich Kley-inspired cartoony energy of "Dance of the Hours", and - for many the zenith of character animation - the devil Chernabog, animated by Bill Tytla. The film, however, was Disney's first critical failure, mainly by classical music purists. Due largely to the closure of the foreign market during WWII, the film was a flop, and Walt's initial ambition of reissuing an updated version every year never took off. However, its later theatrical reissues proved highly successful, and today the film is recognized as one of the most significant films in history. As layout man John Hench recalled : "We realized that we had been part of a milestone, and that nothing like it would ever be done again. [...] I can’t believe Walt’s courage in attempting such a thing as 'Fantasia'. And I guess it worked."

#halloween #disney #disneyanimation #chernabog #fantasia #nightonbaldmountain #billtytla

From Mannie Davis's "Mighty Mouse Meets Jekyll and Hyde Cat" (1944) Probably animated by Bill Tytla The fluidity of the animation on the flames leads me to suspect this scene was Tytla's doing. However, I commend layout artist Art Bartsch and background painter Anderson Craig for making this scene look so magnificent (not to detract from what I believe is Tytla's work.) OTD - October 25, 1904 - animator Vladimir "Bill" Tytla was born. After working for Raoul Barré in the early 1920s, Tytla was hired at Paul Terry's studio in 1923. Between 1928 and 1931, he left to study art in Europe. Upon his return to Terrytoons, he met animator Art Babbitt, who would become his best friend. Tytla quit Terrytoons to join Disney in 1934, where his skills showed on the first three shorts he worked on - "The Cookie Carnival", "Mickey's Fire Brigade", and "Cock o' the Walk" (all 1935). He was made directing animator on "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), for which he did several crowd scenes of the Dwarfs and the most complex acting scenes of Grumpy. Tytla then animated the giant in the short "Brave Little Tailor" (1938), which showed his mastery of weight. Tytla animated Stromboli in "Pinocchio", and in "Fantasia" (also 1940) did the Wizard and, for some the greatest character ever animated, the devil Chernabog. He returned to subtle acting on "Dumbo" (1941), animating the emotional scenes between Dumbo and his mother. When Babbitt started the studio strike in 1941, Tytla loyally followed him, but returned in fall. After animating on "Saludos Amigos" (1942), the short "Education for Death" and the climactic fight of "Victory Through Air Power" (both 1943), Tytla quit Disney in early 1943, and later regretted doing so. After directing "The Sultan's Birthday" (1943) for Terry, Tytla directed several shorts for Famous Studios, where he also created Little Audrey. In the 1950s, he started his own studio for commercials. His final animating job was on Warner Bros's "The Incredible Mr Limpet" (1964), though he fell ill during production and withdrew. After working briefly at Hanna-Barbera and Format Films, Tytla died in 1968. Nicknamed "Animation's Michelangelo", Tytla was famous for his exceptional draftsmanship and versatility, his senses of weight, timing and force, and his deeply heartfelt acting. His assistant George Bakes recalled : “He had such a connection with the thing he was doing it wasn’t really drawing. It was Bill that was coming out. He would feel it and struggle until it happened- the tremendous feeling that was him."

OTD - October 23, 1941 - Walt Disney's fifth feature-length film, "Dumbo", was released. Following the box-office losses from "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia" in 1940, Walt shelved further expensive feature projects (except the already in-progress "Bambi", which was released in 1942) and embarked on a schedule of "quickies", meaning low-budget films that could be produced fast for quick profits. "Dumbo" was the first such film, and was ultimately the only one due to government films becoming the studio's priority as the US entered WWII. Based on a (now lost) story by Helen Aberson, "Dumbo" was written by storymen Joe Grant and Dick Huemer. Rather than starting with storyboards, the duo submitted their story to Walt one written chapter at a time - a method never used again - until he put it into production. To keep costs low, effects animation was sparse, and the backgrounds used watercolor instead of gouache. Character animation proved easy for most of the animators, while the strong emotional scenes were handled by master animator Bill Tytla. "Dumbo" was met with raving reviews from critics who praised the studio's return to unpretentious cartoon fun, and proved a box-office success. Walt, who until then had been preoccupied with settling the 1941 studio strike and a Goodwill tour of South America, initially disliked the film due to having had little to do with it himself, but progressively came to appreciate it and even called it one of his personal favorites. As animator Ward Kimball recalled, "I think the Disney cartoon reached its zenith with "Dumbo". To me, it is the one cartoon features that has a foolproof plot". Stromboli production drawing by Bill Tytla Described as a bear of a man with thick black hair and piercing dark eyes, Tytla was a sensitive and dramatic artist who shaped the mindset of how to “get into a character” at the Disney studios. When tasked with animating the Southern Italian puppeteer Stromboli in “Pinocchio” (1940), he acted out the volatile villain in story meetings so convincingly that some fellow animators were frightened. It was also common for him to draw so intensely that he would rip through his paper. This passion can be seen in each performance he drew. #2danimation #animationhistory #pinocchio #stromboli #disneyhistory #billtytla #italian #disneyvillain

It's glorious seeing Disney's Fantasia on the big screen for the first time since I was in elementary school. It's as astonishing as ever-- every penny Walt gambled on it is up there on the screen. "Night on Bald Mountain" is still so electrifying, imaginative, and visually stunning-- no CGI will ever come close to equalling it. Thanks to @newbeverly for a dynamite show-- and for posting the late '60s hippy-trippy reissue one-sheet poster out front! #fantasia #waltdisney #leopoldstokowski #mickeymouse #billtytla #vladimirtytla #kaynielsen #nightonbaldmountain #chernobog #slavicmythology #riteofspring #pastoralsymphony #beethoven #bach #toccataandfugue #sixthsymphony #mussorgsky #danceofthehours #avemaria #disney #classicanimation

The Walt Disney Company has a long history of using models to help them animate their films. On this day in 1939, actor Bela Lugosi, better known by some as Dracula, modeled for the role of Chernabog in the “Night on Bald Mountain” sequence of the film Fantasia. However, head animator Bill Tytla was unhappy with the results and later had director Wilfred Jackson redo the poses. . #fantasia #waltdisney #waltdisneystudios #belalugosi #dracula #wilfredjackson #billtytla #model #today #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #todayinhistory #todayinpopculture #popculture #popculturepodcast #popculturehistory

My scene of “THE FIREBIRD” getting ready to administer the horrific “Coup de Gras” on the helpless “SPRITE” in Disney’s animated feature sequel “FANTASIA 2000”. As menacing as this character was, I really enjoyed animating this creature, because it gave me the opportunity to pay homage to one of my animation heroes, “BILL (VLADAMIR) TYTLA”, who animated “CHERNABOG” in the “NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN” sequence in the original “FANTASIA”. #disneysfantasia2000 #thefirebirdsuite #johnpomeroyanimation #animationpenciltest #2danimation #disneysfantasia #billtytla #animationhero #creature #lava #thesprite #thefirebird #igorstravinsky

Another one of my all time favorites, animator Bill Tytla. I just found some of his amazing life drawings and it shows how important it is to learn how to actually draw from life. Just look at what he was able to achieve on the Chernabog, from Fantasia. I am sure you know all the work that he’s done for Disney because they are all classics now. #billtytla #disneyanimationstudios #disneyanimation #characteranimators #characteranimation #disney

//Edit by @irydisney e @jacopoiovannitti ✏️ 🖊

“Night on Bald Mountain” terrified me as a kid. Nowadays, it’s one of my favorite scenes to paint from. Chernabog was animated by Ukrainian-American, Bill Tytla, who also worked on Disney classics Snow White, Pinocchio, and Dumbo. He was amazing!! On this day in #Disney History - February 24, 1943: Master Disney animator Vladimir "Bill" Tytla abruptly resigns from the Disney Studios. Tytla, a supporter of the Animation Guild Strike of 1941, now feels unwelcome at the Studio and ostracized by the pro-Walt supporters (as do other artists who urged moderation with the strikers). He senses he has been given less challenging work and feels Walt no longer trusts him. Tytla's wife's three-year long illness with tuberculosis and a desire to live on his Connecticut farm have also led him to resign. Considered by many to be the best character animator working during The Golden Age of Hollywood animation, Tytla's credits include Grumpy in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Stromboli in Pinocchio, and Chernabog in the "Night on Bald Mountain" sequence from Fantasia. It is a depressing loss for the studio and one Tytla will regret for the rest of his life. Tytla would go on to work on cartoons like Popeye, Mighty Mouse, and Little Lulu. However he would often convey that he never felt the sense of fulfillment at any studio outside of Disney. #Fantasia #Pinnochio. #popeye #mightymouse #popeyethesailorman #mickeymouse #DisneyAnimation #DisneyHistory #waltdisney #waltdisneypictures #waltdisneyfilms #disneymovies #waltdisneymovies #disneygram #disneyinsta #disneyinstagram #instadisney #disneyhistory #disneylife #chernobog #SnowWhite #DisneyStrike #DisneyAnimatorsStrike #BillTytla

Once in Savotopia the evil queen who had lost her raven 10 years ago when she died but now resurrected was desperate to find a replacement for a pet. So she went to visit her best friend Chernabog. Chernabog was happy to see the evil queen who came down the mountain and slowly shrank to a smaller size to present to Queen a new pet straight from Persia, to what he said was his very own Griffin the Great. The evil queen was very happy and let the claws of the beast cling to her arm like a dome. #savotopia #illustration #billtytla #charlesjpaineiiiart #penandink #fantasyart #conceptart #fineart #illustration #art #chernabog

*in a year when there was no pandemic* I had the privilege to visit the most magical place on Earth. Walter wanted to create a place where people could feel like they were in a dream, with only happiness and joy. In today's world we always feel the need to show reality, but what is wrong with showing the beauty? The happiness? That's what keeps us alive and our hearts strong, fulfilled with faith to go on. I wish his true legacy will go on firmly just as he wanted, without the polemic stuff from today's world. As I'm someone who admires the whole culture and history about his bravery to dream big, I've decided to begin a series of posts of artworks from various artists of his world as a way of homage, admiration and inspiration. Thursday was the weekday that Walter was born and the day Walt Disney World was opened 🧡✨ #disney #disneyanimation #disneyartists #ubiwerks #lesclark #fredmoore #alberthurter #joegrant #wolfgangreitherman #ericlarson #billtytla #wardkimball #frankthomas #olliejohnston #miltkahl #claudecoats #johnlounsbery #marcdavis #gustaftenggren #tyruswong #billpeet #davidhall #maryblair #eyvindearle #glenkeane #johnlasseter #andreasdeja #haraldsiepermann #francisglebas #centalantar

#BillTytla was one of the greatest animators who ever lived. Whether he was working at #Disney or on a #TerryToons cartoon, his work always had artistry and a spark of life to it matched by few other animators in history. Animator and historian #JohnCanemaker wrote a fantastic article about his life and work that we are proud to host on our website, along with a selection of his incredible artwork. Animation Resources is more than just an archive of animation; its an archive 'for' animators and artists. This is the Bill Tytla sneak from page 170 of The Animator’s Survival Kit by Richard Williams. I altered the duck’s left foot in the extreme on frame 1, to point it away from the body, like the right foot is doing in the other extreme on frame 36. I animated this on paper, then inked and colored it in Toon Boom Harmony. I chose this green color to match the duck on the cover of the book 😉. Williams says to do it on ones, but I chickened (ducked?) out after getting it moving on twos. . I think it’s cool I can now take four key drawings and three charts from a master animator and make a little loop like this, but now I need to take that leap and start animating from my OWN key drawings and charts.

A rather basic take on the design of Chernabog for Disney's live action version of The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Production wanted the design to favor the classic version of the dark, Slavic, God featured in Disney's own Fantasia.
