THE FUTURE INCLUDES US! 📣 Today, the disability community (including several programs from VistAbility) demonstrated their opposition of the state budget freeze to disability services. This year-long freeze delays fair wages for direct support workers and makes access to disability services even harder for people with disabilities. 🌟 Want to show your support for disability services and the staff who make it all possible? Large legislative wins like The Americans with Disabilities Act and the passage of Section 504 resulted in obvious public changes to our society. Ramps were built, schools were made accessible and were funded accordingly. The more insidious nature of the disability rights movement and how it has stagnated is because the discrimination that faces this group is much more hidden. And it is invisible by design. It’s easier not facing the fact that minimum wage doesn’t exist and we can pay the disabled anything we want. We don’t have to see the disabled in our everyday lives because we don’t make them feel welcome. We don’t allow for differences to be accepted or families to feel like they can bring their children to spaces. With such purposeful exclusion and no legislative priorities, it falls on us: it falls on communities to create spaces through collaboration. It falls on service providers who need to be supporting families after graduation. It falls on us to make a purposeful intentional shift in the way that we value people with disabilities in our society as worthy of our efforts. Join us as we begin building Indianapolis to support this work and vision. Revolution doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens when everyone fights together. #communityiseverything #strongertogether #disabilityrights #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #disability #nonprofit

One elevator in the Halsey Science Building at UWO has been down for two weeks. The building is a half a block walk to the only other elevator on the other side of the building. Facilities Management was alerted promptly. Two weeks can be considered too long for an elevator to be out of service, especially in a public accommodation or commercial facility where accessibility is crucial. While the ADA doesn't provide a specific time frame, two weeks can significantly inconvenience users, including those with disabilities, and may be viewed as not meeting the ADA's requirement for prompt repair. Building owners and managers should prioritize timely maintenance and repair of elevators to ensure accessibility for all patrons. One of our advocates placed a sign because an out of order sign had not been posted. Update: elevator got fixed 4/26/24 #thebarriersweface #disabilityrights #disabilityrightsarecivilrights

Today, we remember the astounding legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was taken from us on this day in 1968. An advocate for equality, his teachings and philosophies did not only revolutionize the civil rights movement, but also significantly influenced the creation and implementation of the Disability Acts. Through his drive for inclusivity and equal rights for all, MLK Jr. indirectly laid the groundwork for the improvement of lives for people with disabilities. Let’s honor his memory by continuing to fight for equality in all facets of life. #MLK #EqualityForAll #disabilty #inclusion #disabilityrightsarecivilrights

Kris travelled to the Capitol in Washington DC to advocate for the #SSI Savings Plan Elimination Act as well as discuss the importance of research. Yesterday was the 34th anniversary of the Capitol Crawl. One of the most important and impactful protests ever done by the disability community. On that day, 60 disability rights activists abandoned their wheelchairs, crutches, and other mobility aids and crawled up the 78 steps of the Capitol's West Front. This demonstration was instrumental in showing the country the vast inequalities disabled Americans had due to a lack of civil rights, and the importance of the ADA which was getting nowhere. Pictured below is Jennifer Keelan, an eight year old with Cerebral Palsy who abandoned her wheelchair to crawl up the stairs. This photo became one of the most headlined throughout the nation during the time, and still stands as one of the most important photos in American civil rights history. Shortly after the Capitol Crawl and the reactions to it, the Americans with Disabilities Act finally passed in the House and was signed on July 26th, 1990. It has been 34 years since the courageous actions of disabled Americans helped make the final push towards the passage of our civil rights. We must not forget the decades of hardships these individuals went through and fought for. We must also never forget that we cannot stop the fight. Our rights have been under attack and attempted to be stripped, and we must always make sure that we never allow that to happen, and to show that we belong in all aspects of society. #capitolcrawl #advocacy #ADA #disability #disabilityhistory #disabilityawareness #disabilityrights #disabilityrightsarehumanrights #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #chronicillness #raredisease

We have been trying to inform the new Director for the Los Angeles County of Mental Health about the major issues impacting people with disabilities when we get or try and get services but we have gotten no response or actions to stop these horrible outcomes. VIA @disabilityrightsca Today, Disability Rights California releases a new report concluding that Los Angeles County is unlawfully detaining hundreds of people with mental health disabilities in jail or locked psychiatric facilities long after they should have been released. The report, “STUCK: Los Angeles County’s Abuse and Neglect of People on Mental Health Conservatorships in Jail and Locked Psychiatric Facilities,” describes how people with mental health disabilities are held in jail without any criminal changes, and some remain in psychiatric facilities for months after doctors have said they are ready to leave. These practices violate people’s human rights, as well as federal and state laws. Learn more in the link in bio. Happy Women’s History Month as we remember Judy Heumann, a Titan of the disability rights movement who passed this time last year. We as an organization believe in the radical power that disabled people and their families can provide when collective action is taken for equal rights. This movement was born out of a month-long occupation of a federal building that our government actively tried to disrupt and break using their power and privilege from the FBI. This movement came out of disabled people having a voice to direct their own lives. This movement was born from the belief that people with disabilities deserved to have a place in our society. And yet despite that fact, we live in a country where the disabled community is afraid to get married because they might lose their benefits. We live in a country where subminimum wage is the only offer on the table for employment for some in sheltered workshops. We live in a country where isolation and separation from their community is still the norm. We live in a country where preventative healthcare like Physical Therapy is denied because our medical model treats disability like something that doesn’t deserve to continue to be treated past the age of 22. “If I have to feel thankful for an accessible bathroom, when am I ever going to feel equal in the community?” —Judy Heumann There is so much more of a fight to have and we plan to bring it to the people we serve by revolutionizing what community services to adults with disabilities deserve in Indianapolis. #communityiseverything #disabilityawareness #disabilityrightsarehumanrights #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #inclusion

Once again, we are blown away by the overwhelming support that we have received this week through the @wthrcom ‘Send the Love’ campaign. This is the start of a revolution in this city. This is the start of community partnerships that enrich the lives of people with disabilities and their families. This is the start of evidence-based practices being served alongside day-programming. Got to meet finally met in person Commissioner Margaret “Peggie” Reyna. Peggie is a leading figure in the Domestic Violence & Intimate Partner Violence field, particularly for people with disabilities. Peggie was instrumental for me when I was trying to find DV services in Los Angeles County but kept getting denied services because I was a man and a person with a disability.  Commissioner Margaret “Peggie” Reyna was appointed by Supervisor Hilda L. Solis of the First District on April 28, 2015. Commissioner Reyna is the Project Director for Peace Over Violence’s Deaf, Disabled & Elder Services Program, including the Right Response Collaborative, and the “LoveMeNot” Anti-Stalking Project. Ms. Reyna holds a B.A. in Special Education with an emphasis on Deafness.  Herself hard of hearing from domestic violence, Peggie is a nationally recognized speaker in the fields of intimate partner violence, teen dating violence, child abuse, stalking, and women’s self-defense. She is best known for her pioneering work in the Deaf and Disabled communities and has been published in “Deaf Life,” “WE” magazine, and “New Horizons”. The L.A. County Aging & Disabilities Department (AD) unites aging, disability, and community services previously part of the now-dissolved WDACS.  All of Peace Over Violence’s services are available in English, Spanish & American Sign Language. #disabilityinclusion #DisabilityRightsAreCivilRights #DisabilityRightsAreHumanRights

It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences. 💕 Those words from one of my favorite writers and thinkers, Audre Lorde, are a powerful reminder, as we uplift #BlackHistory month and celebrate #blackneurodiversity that we also have to acknowledge the systemic barriers Black neurodivergent folks face. We must, as a disability community, advocate for changes within our own local communities and throughout the country. 👇🏾 For instance, “Black autistic children are twice as likely to be misdiagnosed with conduct disorder, a highly stigmatized behavioral disorder, and five times as likely to be misdiagnosed with adjustment disorder, a prolonged response to a stressful or traumatic event, “ according to an article in Parents magazine: For Black Families, Neurodivergence Means Challenges—and Endless Opportunities To Redefine Parenting ✨ >>> SWIPE through to read about the work of @therealfaithevans and her @rydersroominc, musician + creative @morganharpernichols (diagnosed as autistic at 31), and two books uplifting autism acceptance + awareness. The proposed changes to the FSSA will directly impact families who have loved ones with the most complex medically fragile needs. Family members are some of the only people who are available for their at times, round-the-clock care, therapy, and appointments- resulting in them being unable to be employed. Waivers are the way that family members are able to properly care for their children, while also making a living to continue functioning in our society. In early July of 1978 in Denver, CO Wade Blank and the Gang of 19 decided to "boldly go where everyone else has gone before" and began their protest for public transportation access. The Gang of 19 was a group of individuals who moved from a nursing home to a home in the community, soon finding that there was barrier after barrier in accessing the community with transportation being at the top of the list. It was an exciting time in Civil and Disability Rights History and people were beginning to stand up and fight for equal access across the country. The Gang of 19 protested by lying in front, some even physically chaining themselves to buses, while chanting "We Will Ride!" We remember this history on Transit Equity Day reflecting on how far we have come but understanding we still have so far to go. #wewillride #boldygoingwhereeveryonehasgonebefore #TransitEquityDay #DisabilityRightsAreCivilRights

#BlackHistoryMonth is a time to celebrate the resilience, achievements, and triumphs of Black people throughout history. But this year, let’s amplify the voices and experiences often marginalized within the Black community: children with disabilities. Black children with disabilities face double the discrimination of their peers, experiencing bias based on both race and ability. They’re overrepresented in segregated classrooms and underrepresented in leadership roles, hindering their access to resources and opportunities. Let’s celebrate Black disabled joy! Share stories of their achievements, talents, and everyday triumphs. Remember, true Black History Month celebration means recognizing and uplifting the experiences of all within the community. Let’s create a world where Black disabled children can thrive, not just survive. #BlackDisabledLivesMatter #DisabilityRightsAreCivilRights #RepresentationMatters #BeyondInspiration #BlackHistoryMonth #ChallengeTheNarrative #AmplifyBlackVoices #TogetherWeRise #blackfuturemonth #DisabilityJustice

Living With Disabilities would love to bring back the advocacy table for disability rights activists to share their views on different topics based on the disability community, including personal experience topics that revolve around not being included within society. These topics are to help those in society become better. And when you do better, you feel better about yourself and your environment. We are looking for a panel of no more than five or ten to hold this discussion. These discussions will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube and Spotify for podcasters (originally known as Anchor FM). “When other people see you as a third class citizen, the first thing you need is a belief in yourself and the knowledge that you have rights. The next thing you need is a group of friends to fight back with.” —Judy Heumann Our first screening @cripcampfilm in partnership with @kankancinema showed us the lengths that people with disabilities have always had to resort to in order to demand that they are treated even close to equal in the eyes of the law. Plot twist, they’re still not. As I write this post the state of Indiana is considering dropping the provision of loved ones being paid for caring for people with the most complex of needs. People with disabilities can’t have more than $2,000 in assets or they risk losing their benefits- meaning they have barriers to being married or holding gainful employment. We live in a society where to make hospitals and universities accessible, a federal building had to be occupied by disabled activists for an entire month despite the FBI cutting off their power and fabricating lies for why they had to evacuate. The fight that these activists lived was an unbelievable beginning, but that fight isn’t over. Our goal is to provide true community inclusion for adults with disabilities while continuing life-changing evidence-based therapies that drop off for people once they graduate high school. This cliff is unacceptable and we can do better. Come with us to a more inclusive future. Come with us to a more inclusive Indianapolis. #disabilityawareness #disabilityrightsarehumanrights #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #nonprofit #equality

So I'm pretty excited to get to share some #FarrahKeepsOn news with y'all. I've been chosen to go to Washington DC this summer to attend the annual NCIL (@ncilgram) conference! It's gonna be several (hot, sticky) days learning about how we, as activists, advocates, politicians, and more, can best serve and empower disabled folx to live their/our best lives. My little group also has a bunch of appointments with some of our highest-ranking legislators, and get to chat face to face about things that matter deeply to us. I'm VERY excited. Getting to spend almost a week with some incredible advocates, policy makers, and passionate/compassionate humans is going to be a life-changing experience. I know we are all gonna walk/roll away with new perspectives, and lots of new connections and resources that we will all carry forward with us into our future works. #NCIL #DCBound #LetsMakeChange #DisabilityConference #IndependentLiving #DisabilityActivist #DisabilityAdvocate #DisabilityRightsAreHumanRights #DisabilityRightsAreCivilRights

A bit late but…. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr & The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s played an integral part in the Disability Rights Movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Disability advocates saw the opportunity to join forces alongside other minority groups to demand equal treatment, equal access, and equal opportunity for people with disabilities. The struggle for disability rights has followed a similar pattern to many other civil rights movements – challenging negative attitudes and stereotypes, rallying for political and institutional change, and lobbying for the self-determination of a minority community. . . . #specializedhousinginc #SHI #SHIcommunity #disabilitycommunity #developmentaldisability #developmentaldisabilityawareness #disabilityadvocacy #developmentaldisabilities #developmentaldisability #neurodiversesquad #disabilitysupport #disabilityisnotinability #developmentaldisabilitycare #disabilityrepresentation #disabilitylife #disabilityliving #disabilitycare #disabilityhousing #disabilityrights #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #disabilityindependentliving #americanswithdisabilities #disabledadults #developmentallydisabledadults #disabilityrights #disabilitynotinability #inclusionmatters #disabledhousing #assistedliving #assistedlivingfacility #mlkday

Our office is closed January 15 to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. As a social activist he sought equality and human rights for ALL victims of injustice through peaceful protest. People with disabilities marched alongside King and others to promote social inclusion for people with disabilities in all of society. While it's true that you won't find any quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr that explicitly mention disability, we know that MLK spoke extensively about the intersections of oppression. The Disability Rights Movement would not have been born without the Civil Rights Movement. For our non-disabled friends, please remember that liberation for all includes disabled people. The movement must be accessible and center multiply marginalized disabled people. We are your neighbors, your friends, your comrades right here. For our disabled community (especially our wyt friends), a similar reminder: it can be easy to forget that our liberation is connected, especially if you feel excluded. But we can't use that as an excuse, and we can't only lean on being palatable or being "nonviolent." Find your thread to pull on, the one thing you can do to help unravel oppression. ID: MLK quote "threat to injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

Martin Luther King Jr was an advocate for equality and helped spearhead the civil rights movement through non-violent means. His famous words still resonate today and serve as a reminder to many people of how far we have come as a country and how we should always strive to be the best we can be. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. accomplished so much in his life and we are proud to recognize him today. Just how Martin Luther king Jr. advocated and stood up for racial inequality, we do everything we can to advocate for the rights of our clients and disability community as a whole. #mlkday #mlkjr #mlk2024 #ihaveadreamspeech #civilrightsmovement #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #disabilityawareness #disabilityinclusion #disabilityrights

On this day we remember a man who fought for the rights of those oppressed yet acknowledge how much further we need to go. We are a nation who legally allows people with disabilities can be paid penny’s on the dollar. We are a nation who mandates that they can have no more than $2,000 in assets- keeping them in poverty. We are a nation who believes that people with disabilities should not be fully integrated into our society. Limitless Ability believes that while legislation can take years to change, our work can be a monumentally positive force in the people’s lives who we serve. We believe in finding a voice for those who haven’t had access before, providing physical activity, and true community inclusion to give our participants the highest quality of life possible. We are committed to the work of constant learning and growth to ensure that all those oppressed in our nation can thrive. #disabilityawareness #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #aac

This MLK Day, it is important to always remember that racism not only exists within our nation, but that it is everywhere and is extremely dangerous. In the Medical field, many long standing racist stereotypes still exist and are believed by many medical professionals. Did you know that a lot of upcoming white medical students still believe that in a slavery era lies that Black-Americans are biologically different and feel less pain? Or that doctors see Black patients to be less "compliant" and more "angry... and drug seeking." Disabled Black Americans in this nation not only have to deal with the pains of their conditions, but the systemic racism that is preventing proper treatment. When the patient is not believed it can lead to a worsening of a condition, trauma from the lack of care or unconscious racism given by doctors due to believing in stereotypes, or even death of a patient due to lack of care. Compared to White patients, Black patients have significantly lower outcomes and that is due to previously mentioned racial biases and systemic racism within the medical field. This, and everyday, we must uplift Black voices in the disabled community. We must listen to these stories. We must stand up against the systemic racism that is within the medical field. And we must rewrite the racist narratives that have been put on Black Americans within the medical field. As of last year, only 13 states have gotten rid of sub minimum wage for people with disabilities. Section 14c of the Fair Labor Standards Act allows for employers to pay people with disabilities anything that they want. This degrading practice is discriminatory and over 100 years old, but hasn’t changed. Come to our 3rd film screening of @nytimes documentary ‘The Men of Atalissa’ @draftcreativespace to learn how harmful these practices can be, as well as hear from @bestbuddiesin staff on how to practice inclusive hiring! #disabilityrights #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #inclusion #disability #nonprofit #employment

January 4th is World Braille day! This technological tool allows low-vision and blind people access to books, magazines, and written instructions, essential tools for safeguarding education, freedom of expression, and social inclusion. This is another important tool for disability rights. #disability #spoonielife #disabled #Blind #InternationalBrailleDay #Braille #DisabilityHistory #DisabilityRights #DisabilityRightsAreCivilRights The focus of the image is a cartoon woman reading a braille book at a desk. The upper portion of the image has a light blue background, with a turquoise blue half-circle covering much of the lower half. There is brown text on the upper portion, which reads "World Braille Day", with the word "braille" written in braille above the text "Braille" Below that is the woman. Beside the desk she sits at are the words "January 4th" The Thriving While Disabled logo sits in the lower left corner, with "www.ThrivingWhileDisabled.com" across the bottom of the image.

Asperger's syndrome is an outdated term. Hans asperger was a nazi doctor, who murdered disabled children, labelled autism as a schizophrenic and psychopathic disorder and separated autistic children with higher iqs from other autistic children, whom he considered worthy to live and as an autistic person, I refused to be associated with someone so evil. The proper term is Autistic Spectrum Disorder #hansaspeger #antiableism #antinazi #antifascist #autismacceptance #autisticrepresentation #autisticrightsmovement #autisticrightsmovement #autisticrightsmatter #autisticrightsactivism #autisticrightsarehumanrights #autisticrightsshouldberespected #actuallyautisticmemes #actuallyneurodivergent #actuallyautistic #autisticrightsactivist #autisticrightsarecivilrights #neurodivergent #neurodivergentandproud #neuropunk #developmentaldisabilities #disabilityrightsarehumanrights #disabilityawareness #disabilityrightsarecivilrights #disabilityrightsactivist #disabilityrightsmovement #disabledlivesmatter
