I didn’t think it would come to this point, but here I am. 2022 seems so close, yet so long ago, when I decided to enter a master’s program. While I never had any difficulty with the coursework, I did face struggles related to mental health, developmental disabilities, family health issues, and conflicts with difficult people in my life. There were numerous times I felt alone and powerless in handling these issues, but I was luckily able to overcome them through assessing my scenarios and making the best of bad situations. In the meantime I maintained connections with the people I have met since my move to Tampa, I involved myself with on-campus organisations and developed my interpersonal skills. Personally it’s one of my favorites to talk about. It’s so complex and influences everything. It influence one’s ability to explore in their environment. • • The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, plays a crucial role in maintaining balance and spatial orientation. It helps us coordinate movement, stabilize our gaze, and adjust our posture to different positions and motions. When the vestibular system is functioning properly, we can move smoothly, avoid dizziness, and adapt to changes in our environment seamlessly. • • The vestibular system doesn’t work in isolation. It communicates with other sensory systems, such as vision and proprioception, to provide a comprehensive understanding of our body’s position in space. From simple actions like walking and running to more complex movements like dancing and playing sports, the vestibular system ensures we navigate the world with confidence and control. 💜

Are you a clinician caring for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD)? If yes, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has an opportunity for you to enhance your skills and improve patient outcomes. Join experienced clinicians at VUMC who have developed an ECHO I/DD training program designed to foster an all-teach/all-learn environment. The program will consist of live video-conferencing sessions that meet twice a month for an hour for six months, starting in May 2024. By participating in this program, you will not only enhance your skills but also be compensated for your valuable time. Moreover, the sessions will count for CME, adding to your professional development. The sessions will include managing co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions, supporting adults with I/DD in the clinic, housing, and community support, supporting families/caregivers, post-secondary education and employment, and more.
