Sometimes it’s the journey AND the destination 🙌🏻 I didn’t post this yesterday because I was a broken woman but yesterday Juke, Dog Dad and I bagged our first ever Wainwright - Fleetwith Pike ⛰️ It was very much a walk of two halves, the first 1km was an absolute beast and if I didn’t have Dog Dad there with me keeping me going it could have defeated me. I joke that I’m bad with inclines and this was the MOTHER of all inclines for me 😂 I think in that first km we went up over 100m in elevation which is bonkers to my poor brain than likes flat paths 🏞️ Dogs really are amazing creatures because for the first 2kms where I was really struggling Juke was very reluctant to leave my side. I had given Matthew the backpack (after the first and worst km) and tried to give him Juke too but Juke was having none of it. He actually didn’t seem to be enjoying the walk at all which made me sad because I also wasn’t enjoying myself at the time but I’ll do anything to make him happy 🥲 However once we had got past the worst of the incline and stopped for a drink and some sugar (turns out walking up a mountain on an empty stomach while on your period isn’t the one guys 😂) I became a different walker. I was smiling and joking with Dog Dad, enjoying myself and Juke came alive. He was suddenly interested in sniffing around and watching the sheep rather than being glued to my side. Only then did I realise he hadn’t been enjoying the walk because he had been worried about me 😭 We took the opportunity to do some livestock neutrality training on the way up, but once at the top there wasn’t a soul or sheep to be seen so he got some off lead time at the summit 🐶 The view at the top was worth it though. Awesome hike around some of the fells of Buttermere, we were due to camp on high stile for the evening however the weight and rough terrain meant we got to the bottom of high crag quite late and pretty tired. We were debating on carrying on when we noticed mountain rescue treating someone on the steep and very thin path halfway up. This cemented that we would just head back to the van for Tentbox and beers. 📍Lake District - Wainwright Fleetwith Pike with a tiny detour to Black Star. What a place this is! If you would like to do more adventurous things then Honister has loads of activities to book onto. There are two routes to the mine, up steep steps or steep slate, up to you which poison you choose. You can also get a ride up there for £5 if you can’t be arsed! The views were stunning!! There’s a part just after the mine, on the way to the pike that’s boggy as hell and caught me off guard when I raw dogged it ankle deep, but that’s it! 4/10 on the wheeze’O’meter. The ascent to the mine is the killer, the rest is groovy. The decent is steep so take it slow whichever way you go! Car Park at Honister slate mine is free if you use their facilities, so I just bought a brew! High Stile ⛰ After walking along the ridge from Red Pike, I reached High Stile, and the views were amazing. Easter Sunday camp in Buttermere. Headed up Haystacks and finally found a nice spot between there at Fleetwith Pike to pitch up... So many others out camping and ended up next to a fella from Middlesbrough. Didn't stop plenty passing us after dark, no doubt looking for spots. Treated to an absolutely unreal sunset, followed by wind and then rain to wake up to.
