We had another great day with Clare and the ‘She is Strong’ ladies recently for a Howgills Guided Walk along the Pennine Journey to Cautley Spout. Always enjoy these old buildings and old industry on the way up to Coniston Old Man. Lots of folk that I spoke to today missed out on this given the desire to park at Walna Scar car park - it sure makes the walk shorter, but it misses out so much of Coniston's industrial heritage. This is the view from the elusive Warnscale Bothy. It was a day of folks getting lost. We got lost trying to find the bothy, then when we got back to the car we found some lost American hikers trying to get an uber (from honister slate mine after dark) and gave them a lift to the nearest hotel. Evening all 👋👋 So decided to bob out on Thursday night. The conditions were looking great so I had a jaunt back up to the Green Crag area. Well it’s a terrific old view, however it is definitely a challenge to photograph. The reason being there is so much going on. After loads of exploring and wandering I finally decided on this composition as I really liked the foreground rocks and to me really illustrated the rugged nature of the landscape. The light managed to squeeze through the bank of cloud to the West for a could of moments and cast some lovely warm soft light on the scene. BOTHY WITH A VIEW I had a trip up to Warnscale Bothy last night and tried a different composition due to the position of the sun. This must be one of the best views in The Lake District looking down Warnscale Beck to Buttermere. Hammerscar, near High Close youth hostel, is my default location for watching sunrises (especially if I'm running late) but it's not bad at the other end of the day, either. Fletchers Wood covers the small hill on the near left, separating Great Langdale from Little Langdale, with Sawrey's Wood to the right, on the eastern side of Lingmoor Fell. Behind, the skyline rises to Wetherlam then curves around the hollow of Greenburn Beck, past Swirl How and Wet Side Edge, before descending to the head of the Wrynose Pass. The last of the sunlight highlights the ridge climbing in steps from the spoil heaps of slate quarries around Tilberthwaite and Little Langdale, to Betsy Crag, Great Intake and Birk Fell, to Wetherlam.
