Babies!! We went to #mdsheepandwool yesterday. It was rainy and muddy, but we saw lots of cute sheep, our shearer (@sheargrazing) shearing and talking sheep, and lots of great artisans. But the highlight of the day was afterwards, picking up these two wee little fuzzy bundles. Sisters Persephone and Coraline are joining Sidonia and Ezra on our property. They are so sweet and are settling in nicely. We create nutrient dense soil amendments by drying out the root clippings, seed coats and bits of soil that clung to the roots. Afterwards we'll pulverize into a powder so we can amend the soil. If we are backlogged we may feed our Muscovy Ducks the leftovers to ensure they're getting enough niacin and other essential nutrients. #growdontmow

Racing against the season sometimes requires desperate measures to try to get more fruit from your labor. This gnarly mess of watermelon vines doesn't look so appealing with all the decayed vines in the mix. If you look closely you can several watermelons trying to grow. All in all there are 5 still thriving - 4 Sugar Babies and 1 Crimson Sweet. I pruned back quite a bit with hopes that the last of the vibrant green vines will push enough energy into the watermelon so they can get just a little bit bigger and riper. It's a long shot but well worth it. We are not greedy. We've had our best watermelon season ever, but it's just hard to turn our heads to these little beauties that just might have a chance. #growdontmow
It's infrastructure weekend in the garden, I've been getting more bark down on the paths. And harvesting continues - Bryce pulled the first 140 of our 550 onions and they are *huge* softball sized beauties! We'll be taking another 100 pounds of produce to the food bank this week, especially since I barely got started harvesting tomatoes and there's a lot more where those came from. We've also got some gorgeous and tasty watermelons, and more on the vine along with cantaloupe, honeydew, and pumpkins starting to get big. Ironically the only thing that failed this year was our zucchini - we only planted one because that's usually enough for dozens of zucchini! But alas it died on the vine, quite literally.

Glorious peaches - our tree really outdid itself this year! We stayed up past midnight canning, and still managed to have enough to donate to our local food bank (along with a bucket of potatoes and green beans. We donated almost 40 pounds of produce in one week! The only thing better than enjoying some summer-ripe peaches is being able to share them.

Did you know that the fine cut lawns, that we humans like to look at, are actually desolate deserts for bees and other pollinators? Plain grass offer nothing to eat for the little fellows and as cities and housing areas grow, there are less and less places for pollinators to feast. Why should you care, you say? Well, without pollinators, there's little to no food for us either. No bugs also means no food for birds, bats, fish and many more. When one building block of natures diversity is taken away, the whole thing will eventually fall down. So next time you want to mow down your lawn, how about you leave some for the bees! It'll be easier for you and bees and other pollinators love when the over grown patch of land eventually is filled with flowers. Also, if you self like to grow things in your garden, you'll get much more plentiful harvest as the little busy bees will take care of your plants as well. P.S. What is a weed anyways? By definition, a weed is “a wild plant growing where it is not wanted and in competition with cultivated plants” What are you cultivating? Many homeowners put a lot of time, money, and chemicals into maintaining a perfect trimmed carpet of grass. These standards derive from golf culture and have perpetuated into the normal expectations of what a healthy lawn is across the country. We should try to steer away from these practices as it is unsustainable and harmful to the environment. From the constant need to be mowed, water pollutants, and reduction of pollinator habitats, these lawns are not conducive to a healthy landscape. The #growdontmow and #nomowmay movements have taught and inspired many, including myself, to the potential value of meadow conversions, wildflowers, and leaving your lawn alone. This is my yard now after several years of little to no mowing and allowing what grows there to thrive.
