Apollo 13: April 11 – April 17, 1970 🌕 On April 13, 1970, Apollo 13 encountered a critical setback during its mission to the Moon. An oxygen tank explosion crippled the Service Module, forcing an immediate abort of the Lunar landing. The Lunar Module was repurposed as a lifeboat and tugboat, a role never anticipated, to ensure the crew's survival. Despite facing immense challenges including limited power, loss of cabin heat, and shortage of resources, the crew, comprising James Lovell, Fred Haise, and ‘Jack’ Swigert, demonstrated incredible resilience. Their ingenuity and teamwork led to their safe return to Earth six days later. On this day 1970 - Apollo 13 Explosion After a routine stir of an oxygen tank, damaged wiring insulation caused an explosion which depleted both of the Service Module’s oxygen tanks into space. The crew had to shut down the Command Module and move into the Lunar Module which acted as a life boat while they swung around the far side of the Moon and headed back to Earth. As Earth approached they reactivated the Command Module systems which had just enough power to make a successful re-entry #apollo13 #commandmodule #apolloprogram #nasa #moon #lunarorbit #apollo50 #jimlovell #elonmusk #spaceexploration #spacetravel #saturnv #spacecraft #moonlanding #lunarmodule #lunar #spacephotos #space #projectapollo #fredhaise #kennedyspacecenter #apollophotos #spacex

April 13th: Apollo 13 experiences a malfunction. On April 13th, 1970, the Apollo 13 spacecraft reported a problem. Operated by Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise, Apollo 13 was the 7th manned space mission in the Apollo program and was intended to land on the surface of the moon. On April 13th, 1970, NASA Mission Control in Houston, Texas, requested the stirring fans in the service module’s oxygen tanks be turned on to address an earlier issue. After doing so, a sudden and loud bang was heard by the astronauts, followed by a fluctuation of electrical power. The stirring fans had evidently damaged wire insulation inside the tank, which also contained Teflon, causing an explosion. Communications with Earth were lost for 1.8 seconds. After emergency power was activated, Swigert and Lovell reported in “Houston, we have a problem”. The Apollo began experiencing several technical issues, as electrical failures spread throughout the vessel and fuel/oxygen tanks began depleting. The command module was shut down to conserve power and the crew to the lunar module, which acted as a lifeboat in emergencies. Mission Control worked frantically to bring the Apollo back, using improvised solutions based on what was available to use aboard the ship. Rather than land on the moon, the ship looped around its circumference and sent itself back toward Earth. Apollo 13 successfully landed in the South Pacific Ocean on April 17th, and all three passengers were unharmed. “Houston, We Have A Problem.” With these words, one of the greatest dramas of determination, perseverance, ingenuity, and human survival in history would unfold over four days in April of 1970. #otd in #spaceflighthistory (April 13, 1970) an oxygen tank in the service module (SM) of the Apollo 13 spacecraft exploded and disabled its electrical and life-support systems. The lunar landing was, of course, called off…and all attention turned to getting the crew safely back to Earth. For every single second remaining of Apollo 13 over the next four days, not a single thing was guaranteed. The efforts in getting the crew back alive are today often referred to as NASA’s finest hour. 📷 An autographed photo of Jim Lovell from my collection that includes the infamous words; 📷 A photo taken by the crew in the final day of the mission just after the Service Module and Command Module separated that shows the damage inflicted by the explosion of the oxygen tank. #spaceflighthistory #nasa #astronaut #astronauts #spacehipsters #projectapollo #apolloanniversary #spacegeek #collectspace #apollo13 #jimlovell #fredhaise #autographcollection #houstonwehaveaproblem #leadershipinaction #inspirational #humanspirit #problemsolving #failureisnotanoption #lunarmodule #commandmodule #grumman @nasa @nasakennedy @nasajohnson @kennedyspacecenter @spacecenterhou @the_cosmosphere @cradleofaviation @dekeslaytonmuseum @spacemuseumbt @msichicago @airandspacemuseum @spaceandthingspodcast

On this day in 1970, three men proved that the number 13 didn't need luck when you have a great team of engineers and scientists and the whole world rallying behind you. 🌎🚀🌖🌠☄ Apollo 13 Commander: Jim Lovell Command Module Pilot: Jack Swigert Lunar Module Pilot: Fred Haise CSM Callsign: Odyssey LM Callsign: Aquarius Launch date: 11 April 1970 Landing date: 17 April 1970 Mission duration: 5d 22h 54m 41s Rocket: Saturn V SA-508 Mission type: Lunar Landing Expected landing site: Fra Mauro Highlands Return date: 15 April 1970 Objective: Explore the Fra Mauro highlands on the lunar surface. (Unsuccessful - mission aborted) Fun facts: * The crew was the backup crew for Apollo 11, which meant under standard rotation, they were supposed to be Apollo 14. Apollo 13 was originally Alan Shepard, Stu Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell. However, Shepard had just been medically cleared after being grounded since 1963 due to Ménière's disease. Management felt that Shepard required more training time, so Lovell's crew was bumped forward. * Ken Mattingly was originally the Command Module Pilot (CMP). However, Charlie Duke from the back-up crew contracted rubella from one of his children. As the prime and back-up crew train closely together, all members were exposed. Mattingly was the only member who never had rubella. Three days before launch, at the insistence of the Flight Surgeon, Mattingly was replaced by Swigert, who was his back-up.

Did you know? . As a surprise Director of flight crew operations Deke Slayton included three miniature bottles of real brandy for the crew of Apollo 8 in a storage compartment after they successfully fired the SPS engine on the service Module and broke free from lunar orbit. Astronauts Borman, Lovell, and Anders opted however not to open the bottles, despite the rather rare privilege of sanctioned alcohol consumption during a flight mission. Why the astronauts didn’t open the brandy is hard to say. Borman had been ill for much of the mission either from flu, reaction to his sleeping pill, or simple space adaptation syndrome (the Garns) so adding booze to the mix was probably a bad idea. The crew also had to rely on sleeping pills to keep their rather strained and irregular sleeping schedule, which also made alcohol a poor choice. In any case, the three Apollo 8 mini-brandies became extremely rare space collectibles. #apolloprogram #projectapollo #nasa #apollo8 #frankborman #billanders #jimlovell #astronomy #universe #universetoday #brandy #alcohol #flight #aviation #moon #kennedyspacecenter #johnsonspacecenter #picoftheday #photooftheday #instagood

James A. Lovell, retired astronaut, test pilot and mechanical engineer, born March 25, 1928. Apparently it takes a lot to stop this guy. Despite an electrical failure and subsequent oxygen loss in space during the Apollo 13 mission more than fifty years ago, he’s alive and well on planet Earth at age 96 — and he’s the oldest surviving astronaut from NASA’s Mercury/Gemini/Apollo era of the 1960s. #JimLovell #Apollo13 #NASA

Happy 96th birthday to James Arthur Lovell Jr!! American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot and mechanical engineer. Gemini 7, Gemini 12, and in 1968, as command module pilot of Apollo 8, he became, with Frank Borman and William Anders, one of the first three astronauts to fly to and orbit the Moon. Lovell then commanded the Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970 where the crew underwent a long series of cascading failures that prevented their planned landing on the moon, but in their triumph in returning home against all odds, through teamwork and professionalism, what was to be NASA's darkest day, became its shining moment! There were thirty married astronauts during the Gemini and Apollo programs—all but seven marriages ended in divorce. Included in the divorces were all three members of the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. A notable exception was Jim and Marilyn Lovell. They were married for more than 70 years. Marilyn died last summer at the age of 95. Jim Lovell is still alive. #triviafrenzy #jimlovell #apollo13 #triviatuesday #trivia #triviaday #apollo11 #ushistory

Did you know?…… As a joke following Apollo 13’s successful splashdown, Grumman Aerospace Corporation pilot Sam Greenberg (who had helped with the strategy for re-routing power from the LM to the crippled CM) issued a invoice for $400,540.05 to North American Rockwell (manufacturer of the service module) for “towing” the crippled ship most of the way to the Moon and back. The figure was based on an estimated 400,001 miles (643,739 km) at $1.00 per mile, plus $4.00 for the first mile. An extra $536.05 was included for battery charging, oxygen, and an “additional guest in room” (Swigert). A 20% “commercial discount,” as well as a further 2% discount if North American were to pay in cash, reduced the total to $312,421.24.[44] North American declined payment, noting that it had ferried three previous Grumman LMs to the Moon (Apollo 10, Apollo 11 and Apollo 12) with no such reciprocal charges. - Jay #apolloprogram #projectapollo #apollo13 #moon #jimlovell #fredhaise #jackswigert #space #saturn5 #commandmodule #lunarmodule #lostmoon #flight #aviation #universe #universetoday #flight #houstonwehaveaproblem #luna #nasa #kennedyspacecenter #johnsonspacecenter #awesome #aviationdaily #aviationlovers

Movie Titel: Apollo 13 Year: 1995 Genre: Drama Moviepilot: 7,1/10 Movie time: 2 hours, 20 minutes Age rating: FSK 16 Production country: USA Original language: English Plot: The Apollo 13 moon landing is not a good thing. First the crew gets sick and then an engine fails during takeoff. The first few days went smoothly for Lovell and his team. But then an oxygen tank explodes and there is soon a lack of oxygen. The thrust force for re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere is also not sufficient. Landing on the moon no longer plays a role. A daring plan aims to bring the astronauts back to Earth. #usa #drama #movie #netflix #apollo13 #hollywood #truestory #ronhoward #tomhanks #billpaxton #kevinbacon #garysinise #edharris #kathleenquinlan #marykateschellhardt #emilyannlloyd #mikohughes #maxelliottslade #tracyreiner #davidandrews #chrisellis #jimlovell #fredhaise #jackswigert #kenmattingly #genekranz #marilynlovell #peteconrad

Rocket Men by Robert Kurson When pushed to think about the Space Program, most peoples first thoughts will go to Apollo 11, with Neil Armstrong being the first man to walk on the moon. After that? Well there was Apollo 13, made famous by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg in their excellent movie. But neither of those would have been possible without the earlier Apollo missions, and Apollo 8 was perhaps the most daring of them all. Robert Kurson knits together the stories of the individuals involved and the challenges of the NASA mission and weaves this into the wider narrative of the time - The Cold War, the Soviet Space Program, the assassination of Martin Luther King, The Vietnam War- to give the most gripping and emotive story based on true events that I have read- since his last book! The picture next to the book is the famous “Earth Rise” taken by Bill Anders, one of the astronauts on this flight. It’s one of the most famous photos in the world and really one of the most powerful when you stop and take it in. A photo like this deserved a write up to match its importance, and Kurson delivered once again. Kennedy Space Center This is one attraction I would give more than five stars. You can spend a whole day there and not feel bored. Good for both adults and children. 1. Interactive display with the Boeing CST-100 Starliner (their reusable spacecraft which transports equipment & astronauts to the ISS). 2. Part of Falcon 9, the SpaceX rocket. 3. Sojourner vs Spirit Mars rover. I didn’t know there was a huge difference in size. I always thought all Mars rovers were tiny, like remote controlled cars. 4. The Vehicle Assembly Building. The building is so gigantic, it can rain inside. 5. The Saturn V rocket, which was used for all the Apollo missions. 6. Alan Shepherd’s Apollo 14 spacesuit. 7. Jim Lovell’s overalls during Apollo 13. 8. Actual touchable moon rock! 9. Space Shuttle Atlantis - the last space shuttle to fly. 10. You have to wonder how astronauts perform their business in space… #KSC #KennedySpaceCenter #NASA #Starliner #Falcon9 #Sojournerrover #Spiritrover #VAB #VehicleAssemblyBuilding #SaturnV #AlanShepherd # Apollo14 #JimLovell #Apollo13 #moonrock #spaceshuttleatlantis #florida #capecanaveral #vacation #holiday
