🔵 Department of Justice, December 1933: We’ve received numerous complaints about pictures that “glorify the gangster,” including BLOOD MONEY (‘33) 🔵 Twentieth Century Pictures, February 1934: “… we never realized that it was a gangster story.” 🙃 I recently dug into the BLOOD MONEY censorship file. And it’s about as wild as the movie itself. In addition to the above exchange—swipe to see portions of the letters those come from—BLOOD MONEY was initially banned in the state of Maryland. The censor board’s decision was later overturned by a judge who wrote, in part: “I think this picture is objectionable on the grounds of extreme stupidity and dullness rather than on moral grounds, and my only duty is to reverse the ruling of the board.” Swipe to read his entire note. (The correspondence comes from the Production Code Administration files at the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library.) All the clips included here caused issues in one locale or another. ❌ British Columbia rejected the film. Their reasoning: “Story mainly of young society kleptomaniac and bail bond racketeer. Objectionable dialogue with salacious inferences. Political propaganda. Bank hold-ups and demonstration of bomb-making. Undesirable for B.C. audience.” ❌ Chicago had one deletion: “…have him killed.” ❌ Several states took issue with the girls dancing at the Hawaiian-themed party Have you seen BLOOD MONEY? If so, tell me what you think about this movie! It features Frances Dee in a COMPLETELY different type of role than we normally see her in, and Judith Anderson is commanding, to say the least. Unfortunately, BLOOD MONEY is not currently available on any major streaming services. There is a copy on YouTube, but the quality is rather poor. . . . #precode #1930s #classicmoviestars #classichollywood #classicmovie #classicfilm #vintagestyle #vintagestar #oldhollywoodmovies #oldhollywoodglamour #bloodmoney #francesdee #judithanderson #weirdmovies #censorship #banned

Car on a Hot Tin Roof is such a classic. It’s not quite the level of A Streetcar Named Desire, but it’s the next best thing and very, very good. The cast is fantastic, but it’s kinda hard following the story with Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor looking the way the did at the time. Amazing film all around.

#rebecca #joanfontaine #hitchcock #alfredhitchcock #bestmovie #bestfilm #bestpicture #hollywood #classicmovies #classicfilms #masterpiece #judithanderson

March 21 1940 was the premiere of Rebecca. Alfred Hitchcock’s great breakthrough with American film audiences - his classic gothic thriller was a box office smash, and it got 9 Academy Award nominations. But curiously, this beloved movie only won two awards: Best Picture and best cinematography. A last-minute backlash against the master of suspense? The film is certainly a classic for a reason. Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier are both at their finest here, and Judith Anderson is a scene-stealer as the ruthless and obsessive Mrs. Danvers. The opening scene at the edge of the rocky cliff pulls you right in. Love it! Was Hitchcock robbed? He sure had a talent for directing Daphne du Maurier stories (Jamaica Inn, The Birds). #rebecca #alfredhitchcock #alfredhitchcockmovies #joanfontaine #laurenceolivier #judithanderson #daphnedumaurier #jamaicainn #thebirds #classicmovie #moviereview #thrillers #movies #academyawards

Judith Anderson and her dachshunds. Australian-born, Judith is probably best known as Mrs Danvers, the crazed housekeeper of Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, 1940. A lifelong dachshund fan. A woman of great taste. I have been growing my hair, and now wear it mostly in the fashion of Mrs Danvers (photo 2) , plaits pinned up. Though am more 'crazed' than 'housekeeper', as many will attest. I especially love the first portrait. Fabulous profiles, both. #dachshund #dackel #teckel #judithanderson #hitchcock #rebecca #hollywoodportrait #dachshundlove

As a very little boy, I had never seen the classic film noir movie ‘Laura’ (1944) starring Gene Tierney. It was not until I grew up and became an adult man that I finally watched it on my DVD player TV screen at “Laura” (1944) in my room, where I could fully appreciate its dark and suspenseful storyline. Gene Tierney’s portrayal of Laura Hunt in various scenes showcased her stunning looks and medium-length chestnut hair. As a result, numerous male characters were smitten by her charm. Gene Tierney had a remarkable career as an actress, working tirelessly in numerous films at 20th Century Fox during the 1940s and 1950s. She took on diverse roles that allowed her to showcase her impressive range as an actress. Gene Tierney, the stunning and talented actress known for her iconic roles in Laura and The Shanghai Gesture, joins forces with Dana Andrews, the rugged leading man from films like The Best Years of Our Lives and The Ox-Bow Incident. Together they bring unforgettable performances to their movies. Clifton Webb, a masterful actor famous for his parts in Sitting Pretty and The Razor’s Edge, shares scenes with Judith Anderson, an accomplished Australian stage performer who has graced Hollywood productions such as Rebecca and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Their collaboration promises cinematic magic! Vincent Price rounds out this impressive cast by lending his signature voice and presence - honed through decades of horror classics including House on Haunted Hill and Edgar Allan Poe adaptations - making each project truly unforgettable. #genetierney #vincentprice #judithanderson #cliftonwebb #danaandrews #filmnoir #filmnoirphotography #filmnoirstyle #laura #1944 #hollywood #oldhollywood #hollywoodfilms #filmstars

Drama Monday with Rebecca,1940, starring Joan Fontaine, Laurence Olivier, Judith Anderson, George Sanders and C Aubrey Smith. Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier. A plain, dull girl meets an aloof widower millionaire on a trip and they decide to marry. Upon arriving at his sprawling estate she meets the staff who are taken aback by their bland, awkward new mistress, it's very clear she doesn't and never will hold a candle to her predecessor, the perfect Rebecca. As she struggles to perform her new duties of the manor she is haunted by the overwhelming sense of Rebecca's lingering impression. But when it turns out Rebecca might have been murdered, their marriage is tested. I Finally got to watch this!! My obsession with the Rebecca story began years ago when I saw the 90s movie and read the book. I love the mystery and the gothic elements but I hesitate to categorize this as romance, no matter which version you go with Maxim is a complete jerk, though Olivier played him the softest I've seen which was good. There's absolutely no chemistry between the couple, the reason she falls in love with him is entirely unclear and he either insults or neglects her all the time. But the story is still great and Hitchcock did this absolutely stunningly, it's so haunting, so shadowy and bleak, it's perfect! There's so many reminders of Rebecca everywhere! Sanders and Judith Anderson are especially spectacular as the villains. What I find intriguing is that, for me at least, I root for the heroine for the majority but once we find out what Maxim did, I'm completely opposed to the main characters and on the side of Sanders' character and Mrs Danvers as they fight for justice for Rebecca. The heroine wanting to protect her husband and stay with him after what he did makes no sense! Of course, they changed the story, in the book Maxim shoots Rebecca, he is a killer and deserves jail, but in this film she randomly faints onto some metal and dies. Since he isn't technically a murderer in this version it makes more sense why she wants to stick with him but the love and respect still doesn't exist.🤷🏻‍♀️ An absolutely gorgeous masterpiece! 5/5 stars

. #Laura1944 #OttoPreminger #GeneTierney #CliftonWebb #DanaAndrews #VincentPrice #JudithAnderson #filmnoir

Black History and White Colonialism begins the story of the musical phenomena of Bob Marley. The son of a young black country teenager, Cedella Booker, and a middle-aged white plantation overseer Norval Marley, this West Indian island of Jamaica was already valued for agricultural crops such as sugarcane, producing the intoxicating rum spirit, craved by the English aristocracy. Born in the village of Nine Mile in the northern central parish of St Ann, this fertile land is as green as the Irish countrysiide, and mountaintop moist. Growing up bi-racial in Jamaica, the singer faced bullying about his heritage. Ya think he wanted out of this small town reality & childhood? Indeed he did, and to his immense talent and credit, he did leave, ending up in the battlefield of destitute Trenchtown in West Kingston, the capital city, and far worse living conditions that in the hilly and fresh north country. And the rest is, yes, history, black and white.

February 15, 1937: John Gielgud brought his innovative production of "Hamlet," directed by Guthrie McClintic, to Philadelphia's Forrest Theater. Gielgud's co-star in the touring production was Judith Anderson, the Australian actress who was playing Queen Gertrude - even though at age 40 she was just seven years older than Gielgud. The role of Ophelia was played by Lillian Gish, who at 43 was ten years older than him. Gish, who had often been typecast as "wholesome" during her career, was quite proud of how she threw herself into the role, especially the famous mad scene. "I played a LEWD Ophelia!" she later boasted. Gielgud's "Hamlet" played at the Forrest Theatre on Walnut Street for only a week. Local reviewer Linton Martin was ecstatic, citing his "magnificence and music, without realism or rant.. . . . The scene with Ophelia had acrid irony, There was bite and bitterness in the encounter with the Queen." #theatrehistory #theaterhistory #hamlet #gielgud #johngielgud #judithanderson #lilliangish #forresttheatrephiladelphia #forrestteatre #philadelphia

Remembering Judith Anderson, born February 10, 1897 and passed away January 3, 1992. Judith Anderson born Frances Margaret Anderson-Anderson, was an Australian actress who played the Vulcan High Priestess T'Lar in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Along with Morgan Farley, Richard Hale, Anthony Jochim, Felix Locher, Celia Lovsky, Leonard Mudie, Charles Seel, Abraham Sofaer, John Warburton, and Ian Wolfe, she is one of only eleven credited Star Trek guest stars born in the 19th century to appear in any episode or film. Of those eleven, she is the only one who did not appear on Star Trek: The Original Series. Although primarily a stage actress, Anderson earned an Academy Award nomination for her role as the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers in Alfred Hitchcock's 1940 thriller, Rebecca. She is also well known for her three-year stint on the 1980's soap opera, Santa Barbara (1984-87). She later appeared in Otto Preminger's Laura (1944). She was also a part of the large ensemble cast of the 1956 biblical epic, The Ten Commandments. Her credits also include major supporting roles in the critically-acclaimed films Kings Row (1942), And Then There Were None (1945), and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958). She also starred in 1947's Pursued. In 1960, she was appointed a Dame of the British Empire in honor of her services as an actor of stage and screen. She died of pneumonia in Santa Barbara, California on January 3rd, 1992. She would have turned 95 years old the following month. . #judithanderson #startrek #thesearchforspock #rebecca #santabarbara #laura #thetencommandments #tlar #vulcan #february10 #birthday #OTD #FYP #nerd Facebook Stars: fb.com/stars http://www.todayinnerdhistory.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TodayInNerdHistory/ Subscribe to Today In Nerd History: https://www.facebook.com/becomesupporter/TodayInNerdHistory/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Today_In_Nerd_History/

Remembering the legendary australian actress Judith Anderson on her birthday. Unforgettable as the enigmatic Mrs Danvers in Alfred Hitchcok’s classic Rebecca, one of my favourites Old Hollywood films. Anderson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. #judithanderson #mrsdanvers #danny #Rebecca #alfredhitchcock #hitchcock #oldhollywood #masterofsuspense #alejandromogolloart

U Alfreda Hitchcocka wykreowała niejednoznaczną postać pani Danvers z "Rebeki" (1940) - z jednej strony despotyczną i przemieniającą życie bohaterki granej przez Joan Fontaine w piekło, a z drugiej: tragiczną, niepotrafiącą przeboleć śmierci pierwszej pani de Winter. #judithanderson #rebecca #rebecca1940 #rebeka #rebecca1940 #alfredhitchcock #hitchcock #joanfontaine #1940s #blackandwhite #oldhollywoodstars #oldhollywoodglamour #oldhollywood #classiccinema #classichollywood #oldmovies #oldfilm #oldcinema #starekino #starefilmy #gwiazdy #retro #vintage #blondynkahitchcocka

Happy birthday to the late wonderful Dame Judith Anderson (born Frances Margaret Anderson)! “There are so many strange, alluring, hateful, loveable, weird, tender, ugly women of history and of life. I want to delineate all of them, or as many as my life span will admit.” 10.02.1897 - 03.01.1992 🏷 { #judithanderson #damejudithanderson #rebecca #alfredhitchcock #thetencommandments #catonahottinroof #laura #thestrangeloveofmarthaivers #fortylittlemothers #theoldmaid #hamlet #macbeth #allthroughthenight #kingsrow #edgeofdarkness #stagedoorcanteen #threesisters #medea #andthentherewerenone #specteroftherose #elizabeththequeen #oldhollywood #oldhollywoodmovies #oldhollywoodactress #oldhollywoodactor #goldenageofhollywood #classichollywood #classicfilm #television #theatre}
