Mental Health Awareness Week 💚💚💚 As Mental Health Awareness Week draws to a close , it’s crucial to recognize the link between mental health and cancer. A cancer diagnosis can significantly impact a person’s emotional well-being, and it’s essential to prioritize mental health from diagnosis and beyond. From anxiety and depression to feelings of isolation and uncertainty, the mental health challenges faced by those affected by cancer are very real. We need to break the stigma surrounding mental health discussions in the cancer community. 1 in 3 people affected by cancer will develop a mental health issue such as low mood, anxiety or depression before, during or after treatment. By fostering open conversations, offering support, and providing resources, we can empower individuals and their loved ones to navigate the emotional aspects of cancer with resilience and hope. A few pictures from this week. I cycled to work today for the first time since the big Arran cycle. I think I'm finally on the way out of a pretty big slump mentally and physically. The final kick up the bum to get moving was the chaos of yesterday afternoon... I had my post-chemo CT scan yesterday, which means I am now well and truly in the grip of Scanxiety. Has Jabba the Third shrunk? I was swithering between driving and cycling to the hospital for my appointment, and in the end I opted to drive as I was still feeling physically very tired. And then someone drove in the back of me. It wouldn't have been so bad if she wasn't just quite unpleasant to me. She blamed me for stopping suddenly (from the scarily high speed of 8mph I came to a stop because a taxi was pulling out in front of me and I wasn't sure if it had seen me come round the corner) and accused me of lying about the damage she had caused (I wasn't and I wouldn't!!). I'm not good at confrontation really, especially if the attack is completely unjust. Thankfully she did leave her details and the insurance companies are on it. She also played the cancer card (we were both on the way to hospital appointments) but I uno-reversed that shit right away on her so we cancelled each other out. I managed to make it to the hospital, but as soon as I stopped I had a panic attack in the car park. I snuck into Maggie's to find tissues, wash my face and have a glass of water, then headed over to the hospital for my scan. But the sun is out, the flowers are starting to bloom, and the cat finally jumped on the hammock (for about 5 seconds). Also, I still have hair (although I keep taking pics of my head to check for a bald spot... there is def thinning). Been awol for a bit... I'm a bit adrift now without the Arran Challenge to focus on. I was back at work on Monday (only for a bit as I had a consultant appointment) and then had a full day of chemo (whoo three drugs time!) on Tuesday, worked again on Wednesday, then ran away in the van to the Isle of May to see puffins on Thursday and stayed over in Fife until Friday. I shouldn't be surprised after all that that I am tired. But oh my days I am so tired!!!! My eyes hurt, my throat hurts, my nose hurts (yay for the constant slight nosebleed that chemo gives me). Not awfully, but just enough that I feel a bit crap. So I guess I have overdone it a bit this week, with it being a chemo week and all... I've barely moved from the sofa all weekend, and have had the company of the cat. Last picture is a bonus one of her being her usual majestic self. Did any of that make sense? #ArranChallenge Day 1 - Brodick to Lochranza Things didn't get off to the smoothest start with a whole lot of Ferry Drama, but we made it across only a bit late and were reunited with our bikes. The first section was hilly, and I really struggled. I fell waaaay behind the pack and thought I was holding everyone up. I kept going, just slowly making my way up in a low gear. And I did it! It wasn't quick and it wasn't pretty and I complained whenever I had enough puff to do so, but I did it. I was joined by my mum and five of my colleagues, plus a friend from uni. What a team!! Today I am tired. I'm sleeping but I don't think I'm getting a very restful sleep. There are certainly a lot of nightmares which are an utter joy. Especially when it's the 'you're going to die soon' cancer-related nightmare 😩 I am definitely noticing a difference in how my hair is coming out. It seems to mainly be on the top of my head, so I fear I am going to end up resembling Reverend Timms from Postman Pat (second image), albeit marginally less grey. I am torn on whether to cut it short now, or leave it in the hope that the exodus doesn't continue to the point of a massive bald spot... any tips? I didn't manage a full day at work today because my brain was refusing to function. So I went home and napped with the cat for the afternoon. This article has been mentioned so many times during our support group’s. We know many of you will have already read it but its such a powerful read it’s too good not to share again ❤️ Imagine a roller-coaster. Some of you will find this an exciting and thrilling image: others of you - like me - will find it terrifying and beyond belief that anyone in their right mind would willingly subject themselves to the torment of being transported at high speed and with great discomfort in this manner. However, I have chosen this image to represent the process of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. On a roller- coaster, you will be strapped in and sent of into the terror, knowing that there is nothing you can do about it until you emerge, wobbly and battered at the other end. You manage by getting you head down and dealing with it as best you can at the time. Absolutely stunning day for a cycle today! I threw Arwen (my bike) into Pen-y (my van) and drove to Aberfoyle to attempt a cycle with *hills*. It was absolutely beautiful but my goodness those hills... I made it up all of the inclines eventually. I did have to stop to regain my breath a few times on the longer hills but the pace on Arran will hopefully allow me to do that? Please? 😅 I obviously looked like I was struggling at one point because someone asked if I was just out for the day and when I said I was training for a charity cycle round Arran in less than two weeks he said I'd left it a bit late! Charming! He accelerated away up the hill when I replied that I knew I was late to the training but I was in hospital for an op when I should have started... hey ho! So tired now... soooooo tired! 2 weeks post chemo! So that's me made it 14 days past chemo day. I'm quite tired (not sleeping particularly well and struggling to relax) but I'm hoping that will pass. I drove to work yesterday and tried not to beat myself up about it. Today I managed to cycle, but didn't push myself too hard. I left work at the point where I was having to read the same words over and over to make sense of them. Physically I felt ok, but mentally it was time for brain soup... Once I'd cycled home I constructed my hammock in the garden and lay there, judged by the cat. Based on the timings of when I last had chemo, I only have a few days before I'm likely to start losing my hair. I did try the cold cap but the dose and regime I'm on doesn't lend itself well to keeping hair (although it might help it grow back faster). So I'm hyper aware of my hair and trying reaaaally hard not to fiddle with it (being a cancer patient with trichotillomania is a whole mind-melter...) A soggy Sunday cycle with @sarahpsanders! Upped the distance again, with a stop for cake and coffee in Lochwinnoch (I must obey my hat). I do need to work on my hills, but at least I'm heading in the right direction. Plus Sarah gave me lots of pro tips on how to not catapult myself off my bike - bonus! After the sun of yesterday, today was a bit of a chilly and rainy surprise, so I spent the afternoon under the fluffy blanket with a giant cup of tea (which I then spilt everywhere because... of course I did). I am really really really really hoping to get a decent sleep tonight. I've been sleeping badly since my chemo last Tuesday and the lack of meaningful rest is starting to get to me. Another busy day! On Fridays there is a yoga class at Maggie's which I really enjoy and have found invaluable for helping with my recovery from surgery and achieving a bit of relaxation (one of the many reasons why I am massively grateful to this charity). I cycled there in the sun today, which was lovely. It was good to see the Waverley in too! I had a bit of garden time with Toffee, and ate my lunch outside. I loooooooove it when it's warm enough to do that! Then this evening the lovely @lisaloumarshall took me to a super beautiful swim spot 😍😍😍 I would have stayed in the water for aaaages (these chemo-supercharged hot flushes have my temperature sensors all over the place) but thankfully I had a sensible swim buddy who pointed out that I should probably not stay in too long 😅 such a lovely spot, fab company, and spring flowers showing themselves.
