Technical Sergeant Robert E. Matteson served in the 80th Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) Detachment, 80th Infantry Division during World War II. Special Agent Matteson received the Silver Star for locating and capturing the Nazi’s Third Reich Chief of Security Ernst Kaltenbrunner who would be the most senior Third Reich official tried in the Nuremburg Trials. From 1943 until the end of the war, Kaltenbrunner oversaw the Nazi’s SS Gestapo, Criminal Police and Security Service. He was instrumental in orchestrating the Holocaust to which such efforts greatly increased under his command. In early May 1945, Special Agent Matteson received information as to Kaltenbrunner’s whereabouts, On May 12, he organized and led a patrol at night over the dangerous glacial trails to a remote cabin at the top of the Totes Gebirge mountains near Altaussee, Austria. Matteson’s patrol consisted of Johann Brandauer (assistant Mayor of Altaussee), four ex-Wehrmacht soldiers, and a squad of U.S. soldiers to make the arrest. The party climbed over mountainous and glacial terrain for six hours in darkness before arriving at the cabin. Dressed in Austrian clothes, Special Agent Matteson approached the cabin alone and unarmed and, after repeatedly knocking on the door, aroused the occupants who were prepared to fight until they observed the patrol approaching. After a brief standoff, Special Agent Matteson and his men captured Kaltenbrunner, his aid Arthur Scheidler, two SS guards, and found two machine pistols, four rifles, two pistols, and a submachine gun with a large supply of ammunition. Despite pleading not guilty, Kaltenbrunner was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Military Tribunal on September 30, 1946, and was sentenced to death by hanging which was carried out on October 16, 1945. Joining us for the first time in uniform was our newest recruit, Private Nell Kindle. We had enough spare uniform pieces to get Pvt Kindle up and running for the 2024 season and a great baseline to start assembling his own kit. He was introduced to some of the basics and talked with us about the process in which our organization runs. Throughout World War II, the U.S. Army remained a segregated military force. Soldiers, depending on their ethnicity, were assigned to specific units with others from the same ethnic background. It wouldn't be until July 28, 1948, that President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981, which led to the desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces. However, unlike the remainder of the U.S. Army in World War II, the Counter Intelligence Corps spearheaded the desegregation based on one's ethnicity due to the realization of the importance of recruiting Agents, linguists, and specialized personnel of mixed ethnicities in support of global operations. Richard Jarczyk, an ethnic German Volksdeutsch Pole Obergefreiter of the Wehrmacht’s 36th Infantry Division, was a German spy who was executed by the U.S. Army’s Seventh Army on April 23, 1945, at the Florian-Geyer athletic ground in Kitzingen. As the Seventh Army advanced through Bavaria, Jarczyk had been left in plain civilian clothes as a ‘stay behind’ agent in support of the Third Reich’s Unternehmen Werwolf (English: Operation Werewolf) that was initiated in the summer/fall of 1944. He was ordered to conduct sabotage operations against U.S. equipment and supplies, conduct disinformation operations, collect information of intelligence value on the U.S. Army, and kill U.S. Army soldiers. In March 1945, in the town of Bruckweiler, Germany, Jarczyk offered his services to the U.S. Army and was hired by the American Military Government (AMG) managing the area. During his brief employment, the Seventh Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) Detachment initiated an investigation into Jarczyk due to reports received from AMG personnel due to constant and persistent requests and efforts to obtain travel permits out of the area. The reason being, so that Jarczyk could pass along information to other German Werewolves. CIC Special Agents conducted a very thorough investigation determining Jarczyk was a German spy. Jarczyk was subsequently arrested on April 6 and confessed to his true espionage mission, sabotaging equipment, and killing US Army soldiers. The Seventh Army Military Commission tried and convicted Jarczyk and sentenced him to death. On This Date In 1973: Army Intelligence declassifies an extraordinary army telegram today. Concerning Lee Harvey Oswald, the telegram had been dispatched late in the evening of November 22, 1963. The cable, from the Fourth Army command in Texas to the U.S. Strike Command at McDill Air Force Base in Florida links Oswald to Cuba via Cuba’s alleged Communist “propaganda vehicle,” the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. It also transmits two statements about Oswald, both false, which have come via army intelligence from the Dallas police: “Assistant Chief Don Strongfellow, Intelligence Section, DPD, notified 112th Intelligence Group, this Headquarters, that information obtained from Oswald revealed he had defected to Cuba in 1959 and is a card-carrying member of Communist Party.” Strongfellow was a member of the police intelligence unit headed by Jack Revill, while the Fourth Army’s 112th Intelligence Group (with offices in Dallas and New Orleans) was the unit of James Powell who was the agent who happened to be taking pictures in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963, and was subsequently caught inside the Texas School Book Depository Building when it was sealed off by the police soon after the assassination. The U.S. Strike Command, USSTRICOM, has been led since mid-1963 by General William D. Rosson, a CIA-related general who in 1954 had formed part of Lansdale’s team in Vietnam. Fletcher Prouty, in his book The Secret Team, lists him as 1 of the 6 who “made rapid promotions to the grade of one-star and higher as a result of the CIA, Special Forces, and Vietnam." The Oswald killed on November 24, 1963, never went to Cuba and was not a member of the Communist party. Oswald never said that he had or was either. This was all provided by military intelligence. How did they supposedly know so much about a loner? This was all part of the frame as they had a "full profile" on Oswald almost as soon as the assassination occurred. Nelson, a counterintelligence officer assigned to the G-2 Division in the Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) in Laos, helped organize and encourage the Royal Lao Army (RLA) defense against an attack by the communist-backed Pathet Lao in Ban Houei Sai. His first time in combat, Nelson remained in the village for twenty-four days, often without food or sleep and commonly under enemy fire. On April 26, 1944, the first U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) Special Agents graduated Airborne School. S/Sgt. Max L. Stemple (Badge C-1286) and Cpl. Howard Symmes became the first Airborne CIC Special Agents, and Cpl. Frank E. Benson, Cpl. Frank L. Robinson, and Cpl. (later Cpt.) Thomas E. Ryan followed Stemple and Symmes shortly afterward. These CIC Special Agents and several others would serve as the CIC Detachments attached to the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions during the Allied Forces Operation Overlord, the liberation of France and Western Europe. A total of 34 CIC Special Agents would form the two Airborne CIC Detachments of 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions in preparation for Operation Overlord. It was determined that seven enlisted Special Agents and the CIC Detachment Commander for each division would jump into France with the paratroopers on D-Day, and the remaining nine enlisted Special Agents would come ashore in landing craft later that morning with the amphibious elements of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. On the early morning of June 6, 1944, German anti-aircraft heavily engaged the Allied Forces aircraft, causing many planes to explode and crash; along with their precious paratrooper cargo. The U.S. Army airborne forces were scattered across the French countryside. The 101st CIC detachment suffered the highest percentage of casualties of any CIC detachment in World War II that day with three killed in action and two wounded in action. Among the casualties S/Sgt. Max L. Stemple and Cpl. Frank E. Benson Jr. who was killed in action in the 82nd Airborne Division’s sector near Sainte-Mère-Église, France. Stemple was returned to his home in West Virginia and was laid to rest at the Grafton National Cemetery in Grafton, Taylor, West Virginia, on April 25, 1948. After my last post detailing the equipment and firearms of the two operators from Nationella Insatsstyrkan making Malmö safe during Eurovision, it is time to do the same with this gentleman. Pictured is an operator from MUST (Swedish Military Intelligence) Nationella Underrättelseenheten. He is wearing an issued M90 splinter camo uniform with a matching helmet cover for his Ops-Core FAST Ballistic helmet. The headset are from the same manufacturer as the helmet, with a rail mount kit. The strobe seems to be a Hel-Star CORE 6, a more modern strobe compared to the (older) Adventure Lights VIP-IR seen on the NI operators posted yesterday. The vest looks to be from Snigel Design along with the hand grenade pouch seen on the back panel. The Ranger Green Safariland holster is made for pistols equipped with optics and weapon light, and in the second picture an Aimpoint Acro and possibly a Surefire X300U is seen on the Glock pistol. The second operator also carries Esstac magazine pouches on his belt. (beware the NIR!) Perhaps the most interesting part of the equipment is the 11.5" 5.56 Sig Sauer MCX Virtus carbines equipped with Aimpoint M5, Aimpoint 3X-1 magnifier, Surefire M600 weapon light and a ATPIAL aiming laser. The optics are mounted on 2.26" Unity Tactical mounts designed to allow the user a heads-up position to see through the optic while wearing night vision. More than 50,000 refugees from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar are staying in Kerala using fake Aadhaar cards, the Military Intelligence has reported. The report said the fake cards were made after infiltrating the Aadhaar centres at Madhupur and Nagaon in Assam, Kalimpong, Nadia, and Uttar Dinajpur in West Bengal, and Perumbavoor in Kerala. Besides the refugees creating fake Aadhaar cards to stay in the country, Indian citizens facing criminal charges are also forging them to leave the shores, the Military Intelligence said. Following the findings of the military wing, the Border Security Force (BSF) intensified surveillance in the border states. The Indian Coast Guard, too, beefed up its surveillance along the coastal states, including Kerala. W kontekście dzisiejszego, niezwykle ciekawego wydarzenia - udanej ucieczki polskiego sędziego Tomasz Szmydta, na Białoruś, prawdopodobnie zdekonspirowanego białoruskiego szpiega. Generał Pytel napisał ponad rok temu przerażający artykuł, "Rosja już tu jest. Jej największym sukcesem w Polsce jest PiS". Przedstawiał w nim przerażające tezy, o tym, jak jesteśmy jako państwo zinfiltrowani przez służy federacji rosyjskiej. (celowo z małej litery). Świetnie pokazuje to dzisiejsza sprawa szpiega, który przez lata był dopuszczony do najwyższych tajemnic państwowych. Tomasz Szmydt był ceniony w czasach rządów PiS. Pracował m.in. w tzw. neoKRS, czyli Krajowej Radzie Sądownictwa, powołanej dzięki ustawom Zbigniewa Ziobry, łamiących praworządność w Polsce. Był też jednym z bohaterów afery hejterskiej, w której grupa propisowskich sędziów oczerniała prawników nieposłusznych zmianom wprowadzanym w wymiarze sprawiedliwości i organach ścigania przez Ziobrę. Podczas zwiedzania Poczdamu i Berlina fascynującymi mnie śladami ubiegłych lat, bardzo duże wrażenie zrobił na mnie Most Glienicke, który przez 28 lat znajdował się na granicy między Berlinem Zachodnim a NRD. Most przeszedł do historii jako „most szpiegów” ponieważ to właśnie tutaj kilkakrotnie doszło do wymiany agentów i dysydentów ze wschodu i zachodu i tutaj był kręcony film „Bridge of Spies” z Tomem Hanksem. W tym miejscu trzeba przypomnieć postać najgłośniejszego polskiego szpiega z tamtego okresu - Mariana Zacharskiego. Na przełomie lat 70. i 80. pod przykrywką sprzedawcy polskich maszyn w USA zdobywał sekrety amerykańskich technologii. Marian Zacharski jest legendą polskiego wywiadu oraz autorem książek. Prowadził działalność na terenie USA i pozyskał dla polskiego wywiadu najnowocześniejsze amerykańskie technologie wojskowe. Po aresztowaniu przez FBI w 1981 r. został skazany przez sąd w Los Angeles na karę dożywotniego pozbawienia wolności, aby w 1985 r. zostać częścią wymiany na „moście szpiegów" Glienicke. Po 1990 r. pełnił najwyższe funkcje w polskim wywiadzie. W 1995 r. został awansowany na stopień generała brygady przez prezydenta Lecha Wałęsę. Właśnie takie zwiedzanie uwielbiam.
NO FLYING TO KINSHASA UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! "We reached a difficult decision to suspend flights to Kinshasa effective April 30, 2024, until we can effectively support these flights," read a statement from Kenya Airways. This comes after the arrest and continued detention of two Kenya Airways Staff, for the last 16 days, at a military camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lydia Olando Maloba, a Kenya Airways Station Manager based in Kinshasa, and her Congolese colleague Olivier Lufungula, were arrested on Friday, April 19, 2024. They continue to be detained by the Military Intelligence Unit known as Detection Militaire des Activities Anti Patrie (DEMIAP). The arrest was over alleged missing customs documents of a cargo that was to be transported by the airline. While the Military court heard the matter, and ordered their unconditional release, it is said that they are still in detention. 📌 Thousands of Russian soldiers have reportedly deserted their posts in Ukraine as troop morale continues to plummet. Meet Cadet Sierra Sankey! She is a Criminology major with a minor in Military Science. She is from Koeltztown, MO. She joined ROTC because it helped pay for her college and at the same time, ROTC was a route to the career that she wanted. Cadet Sankey stated her favorite part of ROTC, “My favorite part about ROTC is the people. I’ve made great friends and met a lot of cool people, and I've had the opportunity to do some cool stuff along with that.” Cadet Sankey has served as the PAO and S3. She has been involved with student organizations such as Alpha Phi Sigma, Scabbard and Blade, and Pershing Rifles. Upon commissioning, Cadet Sankey is branching Active Duty, Military Intelligence. She has been assigned to the 2-17 Cavalry Squadron, Fort Campbell, KY. During her spare time, Cadet Sankey likes to scuba dive, travel, watch movies and hang out with her friends. Her biggest inspiration is Mr. Simpson who has been her mentor throughout college and ROTC. In the past 4 years, he has mentored her more than anyone else in her entire life. He has always motivated her to push past her limits and “get comfortable with being uncomfortable. #Todayin 2014 British Army Air Corp Lynx AH9A helicopter ZF540 crashed in a Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) accident in Afghanistan, killing 5 crew, these were; Captain Thomas Clarke, Flight Lieutenant Rakesh Chauhan, Warrant Officer Class 2 Spencer Faulkner, Corporal James Walters and Lance Corporal Oliver Thomas. Lance Corporal Thomas was born on 5 September 1987 in Brecon, Powys. He joined the Army Reserve in June 2011, and after moving to London he joined 3 Military Intelligence Battalion in July 2012. He volunteered to be mobilised from the Army Reserve for deployment to Afghanistan and arrived on 11 December 2013 to be part of the United Kingdom’s contribution to the International Security Assistance Force. The commanding officer of 3 Military Intelligence Battalion said: The news of the death of Lance Corporal Oliver Matthew Thomas is devastating to his friends and companions in 3 Military Intelligence Battalion. This tragic incident has taken a young, enthusiastic and highly capable Intelligence Corps soldier away from us and his loss is deeply felt by all members of the unit and the Intelligence Corps as a whole. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, particularly his parents, at this most difficult time. His family paid the following tribute: Oliver was a truly amazing person, living his life to the full, while fulfilling some of his many dreams and adventures. He was very much loved and will be greatly missed by his grieving family and friends.
