Last week KCSO hosted a re-dedication ceremony for the Lt. Commander Otis Tolbert Memorial Highway along State Route 198 in Lemoore. Lt. Commander Tolbert lost his life on 9/11 while serving in Naval Intelligence at the Pentagon. About a year ago, Deputy Aaron Bairstow noticed the 20 year old Lt. Commander Tolbert highway memorial signs were peeling and fading. Sheriff Robinson, Sergeant Nate Ferrier, and KMPH Fox 26 immediately began working to raise money to replace the signs. Amazingly, Gary Castro from KRC Safety reached out to inform us they would make and install new signs at no cost! The signs are located east of 18th Avenue and east of 25th Avenue, along State Route 198. Tim Tuttle knew over thirty friends, neighbors, and former co-workers, who didn’t come home on September 11th. 44 Lights: The Musical is a musical journey to healing and a labor of love that has taken over two decades to create. With original folk/rock music and stories based on friends, neighbors, and colleagues, 44 Lights takes the audience from the most beautiful day of the year, into the depths of disaster, and ultimately towards the restorative brilliance of catharsis. Tim wrote his first song the night of 9/11 in an effort to communicate his pain and loss through music. One song turned into many more and then a memorial concert on the first anniversary. “Music From Ground Zero” came to life from the ashes outside their office window in downtown Manhattan. 23 1/2 years ago I stepped out of a subway and saw smoke streaming near the top of a great skyscraper. Sirens were heard everywhere. Today I stepped out of the subway and saw a tall downtown building with smoke pluming out the top, hovering helicopters and the sounds of many sirens. My heart sank, my fears roared for a few seconds. We will never forget. A day that changed all of us. I remember being here, for almost 2 years, struggling, surviving, (worked until 4 am as a dishwasher) and on that morning, my 84 years old neighbor woke me up and asked me to turn my tv on and said "America is being attacked". When my parents finally were able to visit me after 2 denials for their VISA request, we flew up to New York, visited the site of the WTC, watched videos, looked at photographs of this horrible day at the little museum next to the site. That experience made emotional. I also remember when almost 2 decades later, I was taking my citizenship test and I was asked under oath if I would fight against any enemy for this great country, remembering this day gave me an undeniably strong, definite YES. Every day I wear a "22 a day" rubber bracelet for those soldiers who ever fought for this country's freedom. Proud to be an AMERICAN. Time spent this week at Ground Zero’s memorial for those lost on 9/11. As I walked away I heard parents of two young boys around me 10-12 years old explaining what they were walking up to see. Those events are top of mind for me and so many.
