Everyone’s favourite eye-roll painting ‘St. Lucy’ by Domenico Beccafumi now plays a key role in ‘The Conjuring’ universe thanks to ‘The Nun II’. It’s all in those eyes. The new legend goes that these relics are magical tools that can defeat demonic forces—here’s looking at you Valak! They have been protected by being passed down between monasteries over time. The appearance of Lucy’s eyes in the film also makes you look differently at all of those gazes and glances cast across the entire franchise —animate and inanimate. Part 4/7 Saint Joan, Age: 19 Oil on Wood Saint Joan of Arc, born to peasant parents in the early fifteenth century, began hearing divine voices at the age of thirteen. These voices proclaimed her destined role in the Hundred Years’ War between France and England, urging her to lend support to Charles VII. At the age of seventeen, she approached Charles and shared her mission with him. He then sent her to Orleans, where she helped liberate the city from English occupation and ultimately shifted the course of the war in favor of the French. She would go on to help in other battles and would stand by Charles’ side when he was crowned King. When Joan was nineteen, she was captured by the British and King Charles would not even attempt to save her. This betrayal led to her trial for heresy, where she endeavored to defend her beliefs. This painting is inspired by the martyr Saint Lucy. In iconography and depictions of her the emblem of eyes on a cup or plate apparently reflects popular devotion to her as protector of sight, because of her name, Lucia (from the Latin word “lux” which means “light”). In paintings St. Lucy is frequently shown holding her eyes on a golden plate. Lucy was represented in Gothic art holding a dish with two eyes on it. She also holds the palm branch, symbol of martyrdom and victory over evil. (Info edited from Wikipedia) I was intrigued by these paintings of her and the symbol of the eyes. Similar to the painting ‘Vices and Virtues’ I wanted to create and hold a tension between my objects within the painting. The softness of the grapes and the hardness of the eyes painted on rocks/ grapes that make wine which can have a corrupting influence on some people vs the eyes of Saint Lucy and her martyrdom. When you step on grapes they burst or pop under your feet and I imagine if you stood on someone’s eye balls it would make a similar sensation and mess. Potentially a little macabre of me! I really enjoyed painting the grapes, I actually painted them from life using a realistic fake bunch for reference! 📍St. Lucy of Syracuse, Sicily Lucy is Syracuse’s patron saint, and you can find her relics (including bones and clothing fragments) in the city’s cathedral [featured in my two recent posts]. She lived during the 4th century and was martyred during a large wave of persecution by the Roman emperor Diocletian. Not added to her story until the 15th century yet a prominent feature of most artworks depicting Lucy is the anecdote that her eyes were gouged out as part of her martyrdom. This is the reason so many artworks featuring Lucy show her gesturing towards her martyred eyes. 📍Syracuse Cathedral, Sicily The cathedral of Syracuse, Sicily, is a palimpsest of its long history. The first-known building on the site was a sixth-century BCE Greek temple dedicated to Athena, though archaeologists have uncovered even earlier remains underneath the temple foundations. Over a millenium later, Saint Bishop Zosimo of Syracuse founded the city’s cathedral on the temple grounds, incorporating columns and other spolia into the church’s architecture. In the 9th century, the structure was converted into a mosque, and re-converted into a church two hundred years later by Roger I of Sicily. The roof nave and some mosaics date to this Norman period of the city. Unfortunately, the church was heavily damaged in the massive earthquake of 1693, which rocked the island. The church was reconstructed in the mid-eighteenth century in the Sicilian Baroque style, most evident in the facade’s grand double-Corinthian columns, ornate scrolling details, and undulating curves and lines. Inside, visitors can see many relics (including bone and clothing fragments) of St. Lucy, the city’s patron saint. This little lady has been making the rounds so I thought I'd make a proper post. This piece is a few years old and still a favorite of mine. "St. Lucy" is only 11x14" oils with sculpted details. I'm really considering doing a much larger version sans gold. There are prints, however, my$h0p is closed. Yesterday afternoon involved a first hand peek at the Mount Gay sugarcane fields in St Lucy (Barbados obvs). Thank you very much to Maggie Campbell for taking time out of her busy day to give me a tour - so very insightful - and has given me a new way to view the fields in countries around the world. The efforts to which Mount Gay go to in order to grow the very best cane they can is staggering. Sacrificing yield for quality, rotating crops, their planting strategies; all in a game that takes years to play out. Now more than ever am I excited to taste the Rums that will come from the hard work. I’m further reminded why Barbados is such a unique location for Rum. Starts in the ground and works upwards. Things aren’t easy for cane growers for all manner of reasons, but there is so much to celebrate, and I hope that we can all continue to get the message out about the values of authentic Barbados Sugar and Rum. I keep my fingers crossed for future opportunities to see the Mount Gay sugar factory, and for the future of Portvale sugar factory in general. Added benefits to the tour: getting to meet Grantley Hurley, the Barbados King of the Crop for the last nineteen years in a row. He’s been involved with sugarcane since he was 11 years old (he’s now 70!). Also Maggie’s favourite breadfruit tree. Check out this tradition 🦋 The festival has been in different locations because it got bigger ad bigger. for 2024 the festival will be August 1-4 and it is back in Little Italy area 🛤️ The festival was founded in 1925 by Grazia Bonafede Caniglia. The mother of six immigrated to the United States from Carlentini, Sicily in 1900. The town of Carlentinesi officially dedicated their town to Santa Lucia in 1621. 🌌 As more and more Italians built new lives in Omaha, Grazia made it her mission to recreate Carlentini’s Santa Lucia Festival, to give immigrants a strong connection with their former country, and deepen their faith in the new land. We recently made a purchase with @ottomanhands and oh boy did they deliver! This ring was purchased as a devotional item for St Lucia, the patron saint of the blind, and bringer of light within the darkness. St Lucia is a Saint we have much respect for as we see her as our patron of foresight and psychic vision and we call to her when prophesying what is to come. St Lucia has a very interesting history especially with how she martyred and became a Saint. She is believed to have been burned at the stake however her body would not burn and the flames caused her no harm. It wasn’t until after they realised that she was not harmed by their method of murder that they took a knife and stabbed her in the neck. There are other stories that her eyes were gouged out from her head by Pagans which is why she is usually represented with a dish and two eyes. “Those whose hearts are pure are temples of the Holy Spirit.” ~ St. Lucy • Since 1993 this mural has graced the facade of St. Lucy Catholic Church in City Terrace. It is the work of world-renowned muralist George Yepes. The mural depicts two images of the Virgin Mary; one holding her dead, gang member son in her arms combining Michelangelo’s Pieta and the Guadalupe. (Another painting with the same image hangs in the alter.) The other showing Our Blessed Mother as the Theotokos.
