I gotta admit Im only 30% into this book😅 so take this witha grain of salt but it's making me feel a way... Dirt Poor Islanders by the amazing Winnie Dunn (Ive seen her name pop up in literary circles, she be killin it💯) follows young half Tongan half White Meadow Reed as she grows up in Western Sydney. It's fiction i think, but definitely could be a memoir. It's odd because I recognise Meadow - I know exactly who she is, I know her family... because I lived parts of it myself. Sometimes it feels awkward to read it because the truth from her eyes as a young afakasi feels more judgemental and also unchallenged. And yet, I have heard and seen and felt these point of views growing up. I recommend this purely from the standpoint that it feels very true to any islander growing up in Australia🙃 (this is a good critique lol) This is a story not unlike the story of any brown person tryna make it in a very white society - one that looks down on us if we show any part of our culture. And one where people of our culture look down on us if we show any kind of "whiteness". Both views being harmful yet despite despite despite, we continue to fight for an identity that we are proud of and choose (hopefully)... Im excited to see how it all plays out☺️ Also there's queer rep🌈... kinda! Nervous to see what happens 🥰 Random note: Growing up in various parts of Australia Ive always "heard" about Western Sydney - but I only have love for the islanders out those ways. Ive met so many creative, innovative islanders from Western Sydney and it truly warms the faku❤️ #pasifikareadathonchallenge #pacificislanderbooks #winniedunn #dirtpoorislanders

A powerful, insightful and provocative debut novel that explores the challenge of finding a way to be true to yourself and your roots without ignoring where you have come from or denying where you want to go. 'Islanders must do everything together. We painted ngatu together. We crossed the ocean together. We settled on isles together. We took up Christianity together. We entered into new citizenships together. We became wage workers together. We lived with generations upon generations stacked in fibro houses together. We became half-White together. We got nits together. We sooked together. We stayed poor together. Together. Together. Together.' Meadow Reed used to get confused when explaining that she had grandparents from Australia, Tonga and Great Britain. She'd say she was full-White and full-Tongan, thinking that so many halves made separate wholes. Despite the Anglo-Saxon genetics that gave Meadow a narrow nose and light-brown skin, everybody who raised her was Tongan. Everybody who loved her was Tongan. This was what made her Tongan. Growing up in the heat-hummed streets of Mt Druitt in Western Sydney, Meadow will face palangis who think they are better than Fobs, women who fall into other women, what it means to have many mothers, a playful rain and even Pineapple Fanta. For this half-White, half-Tongan girl, the world is bigger than the togetherness she has grown up in. Finding her way means pushing against the constraints of tradition, family and self until she becomes whole in her own right. Meadow is going to see that being a dirt poor Islander girl is more beautiful than she can even begin to imagine. Dirt Poor Islanders is a potent, mesmerising novel that opens our eyes to the brutal fractures navigated when growing up between two cultures and the importance of understanding all the many pieces of yourself. #farrells #farrellsbookshop #dirtpoorislanders #winniedunn #hachette #hachetteaustralia

✨May TBR✨ (and swipe for April TBR results!!!) so.... last month's TBR did not go well, I did finish the 3 I picked for The Diverse Baseline though so I'm calling it a win lol. ( #TheDiverseBaseline) This months' TBR is a little smaller, and I'm hoping I get to all of them!! I'm hoping this also gives me enough room to pick random mood reads as well as stick to TBR picks! As you probably know, May is AANHPI month, so all my TBR picks are from AANHPI authors! I'm CHamoru (and Filipino and white), but I realized I've been slacking on seeking out and reading books from Pacific Islanders! In the comments of my "I have a problem with API Bookstagram Tour" post, @abookishcottage linked the #pasifikareadathonchallenge (started by @thisislanderreads) and @pacificislanderbooks, which are great accounts to follow if you're looking for more Pacific Islander reads! #procesamientosensorial #terapiaocupacional #winniedunn #umbral #autismo #tea

Here's my to-do list this Easter long weekend... I'm not planning to do anything except read, drink coffee and go for some nice walks for the next few days. Bone Lands by Pip Fioretti Yesterday I was browing in @booksstones and Michael recommended it. In 1911 on a wintery night in NSW wool country, a mounted trooper finds the bodies of three young people. It's a first novel and it sounds very atmospheric and thought-provoking. Dirt Poor Islanders by Winnie Dunn I first encountered Winnie when she was speaking on a panel at the Tamar Valley Writers Festival and she was so impressive - smart, articulate, bold and witty. I've read some of the short story anthologies she's edited and I'm really excited to dive into her debut novel. It's about Meadow, a half-Tongan, half-White girl growing up in Sydney. And what a gorgeous cover! Gus and the Missing Boy by @troyhunterwriter I keep hearing top writers saying really great things about this intriguing novel. Teenager Gus Green find a missing person's website with a digitally altered pic of a boy who looks eerily like him. It's a mystery novel that's also about identity, family and friendship. Another fantastic debut novel! The Trackers by Charles Frazier I bought this one a few months ago when I saw it at Annie's Books at Peregian. I'd not heard of it, but the beautiful cover drew me in. It's by the author of Cold Mountain, which I don't think I've read, but I liked the movie. The Trackers is about a poor artist in Depression-era America who is engaged by a wealthy rancher to track down his runaway wife. I just realised three of these are debut novels which makes me even more excited - I love debut novels. There's something very exciting about reading a novel that the author probably never really expected anyone would read. For that reason, I feel like there is an extra amount of truth and heartfelt honesty in first novels. It's almost impossible to get a novel published, so it's a wonderful thing when it happens. Congrats to them all! What's everyone else hoping to read on the Easter long weekend?

My current read is making me miss my grandma a lot 🥺👼🏽 Dirt Poor Islanders is out today and follows a half white, half tongan girl who struggles to find her way and navigate cultures, tradition, her loud family and expectations growing up in an Australian-Tongan community. I’m white and born in the UK so I’m not claiming to relate to the characters feelings and struggles at all, but as someone whose dad is Australian and grandma and other relatives are Tongan and growing up on their stories, it’s so weird reading a book exploring those two cultures, especially Tonga which I’ve never seen portrayed in fiction before. Even seeing my aunt’s name be one of the characters names! I’m only about 25% into this so far but highly recommend for anyone looking to learn more about Tonga, it’s people and traditions and those looking for a family story following women in particular ✨📚 I wish my grandma was still here today to see the person I’ve become, she passed when I was 12 but I’ve grown up to be strangely similar to her and I know we’d cause trouble 🫣🧡 #bookstagram #igreads #dirtpoorislanders #winniedunn #currentlyreading #australianliterature

BOOK REVIEW - DIRT POOR ISLANDERS by #winniedunn ————————— The words autobiographical and fiction may seem at odds, even polar opposites. But it’s a genre that fits this book perfectly as it’s a fictional tale that is deeply inspired by the author’s life. Like Dunn, her young protagonist, Meadow Reed, grows up amid a big, messy, chaotic but loving Tongan family in Sydney’s western suburbs, striving to come to terms with a culture that is misunderstood and often denigraded. Through this coming-of-age tale Dunn explores how it feels to grow up between two different cultures and live in a household that seems so different to the modern Australian family unit. In a beautiful warts-and-all way, Dunn shines a light on her unique Tongan-Australian upbringing, a first for Australian fiction.

#processamentosensorial #winniedunn #materialidade

✨OT Spotlight✨ Winnie Dunn, OTR, FAOTA It was such a pleasure to get to meet the infamous Winnie Dunn and personally thank her for all that she has given to the OT community. She was humble, kind and found connecting with many colleagues through her time at the conference. She has published more than 100 research articles, book chapters, and books and has spoken around the world about her work. She is the author/co-author of all of the Sensory Profile measures, which capture people's responses to sensory events in everyday life. These assessments have been translated into dozens of languages and are used for both professional practice and in research programs. In 2014, Dr. Dunn completed the update and standardization research on the Sensory Profile 2, to ensure that researchers and professionals in practice have the most current evidence to support their decisions (Pearson, 2023). Thank you Winnie Dunn for your endless motivation to better our profession and for being a mentor to many of us. Thank you to all our colleagues for all you do everyday for your students, patients, and clients. Happy last day of OT Month! #physicaltherapystudent #occupationaltherapystudent #pediatricphysicaltherapy #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #dptstudent #otstudent #occupationaltherapymonth #otmonth #otspotlight #winniedunn #winniedunnsensoryprofile

Every moment, every sensation, every experience - it’s all part of what makes us human. Winnie Dunn reminds us that our experiences shape the way we perceive and interact with the world around us. The way we process sensory information, our preferences, our unique sensory profile is what makes us individuals. #sensoryprocessing #sensory #winniedunn #paediatricot #pediatricot #occupationaltherapy #sensoryprocessingdisorder #humandevelopment #beinghuman #sensoryprofile #humanexperience #embracelife

“Each of us needs a different amount of sensory information to operate the best” 📚 This fascinating book explores why some people need more sensory input and others need reductions in sensory experiences. 🎢 There’s a reason some crave loud volume when listening to music, why others have to cut the tags off clothes, why some get carsick and others love rollercoasters… 💡 We all have different sensory system responses to the world and this is why learners may need movement breaks or reduced lighting- it helps them to process things optimally, without any sensory difficulty. 🌎 Every person’s sensory experience of the world is unique and as Dunn suggests, days can be either really wonderful or really challenging based on how well your sensory needs are met. 🥰 We want to help make things wonderful #livingsensationally #winniedunn #sensory #tuition #teaching #education #thesenses #sen

In 2022, I released 48 episodes of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast and created 3000+ mins of content. The planning, research and interview is the fun part, but reaching out to potential guests is nerve wrecking! In reflection, everything that happens after the interview such as the editing + promo can be time consuming, but I’m definitely more organized this year. Btw, we’re that much closer to celebrating 2 years of the podcast and the 100th episode 🙊. Thank you for your continued support 🙏🏽. Wishing everyone a safe and stress-free transition into the new year. xo Rosa - - - - - - - ps: A HUGE thank you to these wonderful folx for sharing space 💙.
