A flower does not keep secrets. A flower shows everything, all its parts on display, however minuscule, however delicate. Such boldness, such drama I admire and yet. No flower has ever pretended its affection for the sun. Every human has mimed their love to keep someone close. And yet. Spring is here and the exhale is all birdsong and green. The inhale all wind and worrry. I am never ready for the onslaught of air, of song, of color, of light. Secretly I wish for rainy days so I can read and think and wait for something I know to show up, something I know I can know, when nothing is certain, holding close my love for words even as the smells intoxicate, the air a drug I love and hate. We have to breathe out, let the breath get away. We have to let our breath touch another, waft its way into the world. Our breath is all we have really, nothing and everything. Our breath is all we have and we cannot hold it. But we can, we do, despite all our bigotry and longing, share our air, intentionally or unintentionally, such as it is, the breath is all we have to give. #whenbreathbecomesair #breath #flowerdrama #flowersecrets #openair #openup #mondaymorningnotes #breathein #breatheinbreatheout #exhale #inhale #secrets

"When you come to one of the many moments in life when you must give an account of yourself, provide a ledger of what you have been, and done, and meant to the world, do not, I pray, discount that you filled a dying man’s days with a sated joy, a joy unknown to me in all my prior years, a joy that does not hunger for more and more, but rests, satisfied. WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR by PAUL KALANITHI Paul Kalanithi was at the prime of his life & had a bright future ahead of him as a neurosurgeon. But his cancer diagnosis shattered his dreams of a future he shared with his wife. He shares his triumphs & the despair of his career as a neurosurgeon, the people he managed to save & those he could not. Being young, he never imagined that one day he would be a patient himself. It all stared at a CT Scan. Paul was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in 2013. He questioned many things, what makes life worth living in the imminent prospect of death, what makes a virtuous & meaningful life, what do you do when there is no future to plan for but only the present to live in? When he heard he contracted cancer, he and his wife Lucy went through IVF to conceive a baby. He pondered about what it meant to have a child when his life was fading away. To extend his legacy, Paul also started writing his book 'When Breath Becomes Air' which exemplifies his initial passion for literature. He completed neurosurgery residency in 2014, & sadly died in March 2015, while working on this book. This is a profoundly touching, poignant & heartfelt memoir that discusses the fragility of life, the sensitive topic of death, its unpredictability & its impact on family, colleagues & community. Paul leaves behind his beloved wife Lucy & their daughter Cady. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/5 ✨️ April Bookclub read 🖋 At only thirty-six, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, transitioning him from doctor to patient in an instant. "When Breath Becomes Air" tracks Kalanithi's journey from a curious medical student to a neurosurgeon grappling with human identity within the brain, to a husband and father confronting mortality. 💭 After reading this book, I was left feeling some type of way. It made me think about life, true meaning, and my personal values. Written beautifully, Kalanithi's memoir is one to remember. #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi

Therefore, the moment in which breath becomes air describes the act of dying, with breath representing life. Using breath as a stand-in for life is apt for the memoir because breathing is automatic, just as the way people treat their time on earth is often automatic. - #kobo #whenbreathbecomesair #booklover

1000 som Original 100% At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade`s training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, the next he was a patient struggling to live. WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR by Paul Kalanithi Rating: 5 ⭐️ This book has been on my shelf since I purchased it last January or 2023. I don't really remember. But what I do remember is how this book portrayed resilience and bravery when facing death. A lot has happened to Paul since he was diagnosed and despite that he still lived a full life. Paul Kalanithi wrote with such conviction and purpose that his words inspired me to always work hard, give your 100%, and love fiercely. His words struck a chord not only in my heart but also my mind. He was the hero the world never got to be with longer. He was a wonderful soul and fantastic person. If there was any word that should be used to describe him, it will have to be brave. Here's to patients, doctors, and doctors who turned into patients. May you pick up this book and love it as much as I did. May Paul's words touch your hearts and minds as well. #SHIANDRAreads #BookReview #Bookstagram #WhenBreathBecomesAir #memoir #death #medical #doctor

This is an all time favorite.Definitely the best medical memoir I’ve ever read. It’s about dying and also being alive. I’ve read this like two years ago but this reread made me appreciate medicine and neurosurgery even more.I felt a whole rollercoaster of emotions from hope to appreciation to sadness. I kept rooting for his survival till the end despite knowing life doesn’t work that way. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi This book is an autobiographical account of a young Neurosurgeon, who at the peak and precipice of his career is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The account chronicles his journey of coming to terms with inevitable death and attempts to find meaning, purpose and desire to make his days count and amount to something significant. This book is a result of that effort. While I have not read many books dealing with this subject matter, I found it lacking in emotion. The book is rather clinical in addressing the emotional liability associated with death and its impact on the human psyche. In this regard I found "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green much more subtle and humane. But then again I could be biased since I like fiction much more than biographical or autobiographical accounts. #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi📚📖📔 #readoftheweek #readingchallenge2024 #audible

“WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR” ……………. Words by the dying man I recently just done with this read written by a dying man (now dead) of Cancer. I must point that the words used in this read manifests the very feelings of the dying man. His resentfulness, his abhorrence all could be made out without any strenuous efforts. Even after getting exposed to his mortality the author The Paul Kalanithi didn’t allowed himself to stop performing his duties to the utmost and falling short of following his passion of neurosurgery. With all pain, distressed dropping health conditions day by day, the author wrote this memoir. #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi📚📖📔 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookillumination #booksbooksbooks #instagram #instalike #memoir

Book #12 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • I put off reading this one longer than I should have because I wasn’t sure I was in the right emotional headspace. However, this book is about so much more than cancer and a life cut short. It’s actually really about life! • I love how, from early on, Paul Kalanithi is interested in the human experience. I think it’s interesting how he explores this from so many different perspectives—literature, medicine, neurosurgery, etc. I also enjoyed hearing about his experiences in medical school and his discoveries (through his roles as BOTH a doctor and a patient) about the importance of building relationships. • Kalanithi’s vulnerable account of his diagnosis and journey with cancer is extremely reflective and really explores what it means to live a full and meaningful life. While it’s too bad that he was unable to finish this book, I really think the ending, written by his wife, is the perfect touch to end this book. It instills a message of hope and allows everything he embodied to live on. • This book reminds me a lot of The Last Lecture. I read that one many, many years ago, and it may be time to revisit it because these two would make great companion texts! • #LeahsLitReview #LeahsLitReview24 #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #nonfictionreads #memoir #whenbreathbecomesair

#livre #memoire #livres #livreaddict #book #books #bookstagram #whenbreathbecomesair #booklover #bookreview

This book will remain in your heart for a long long time. How emotional a tiny little book can make you! I loved it. Book Name - Tuesday with Morrie by Mitch Albom from publisher ✅ The book is about a meeting between the author and his professor, Morrie Schwartz. Who is terminally ill and shared his wisdom and lessons. ✅ It covers almost all the emotional aspects of human life including life, death, love, relationships, and how to live a meaningful life. It also makes you feel everything you read. It kind of vibes with the book "When Breath Becomes Air". ✅ These are a few quotes from the book. I hope you like and appreciate the wisdom of Mr. Morrie. #tuesdaywithmorrie #mitchalbom #MorrieSchwartz #wisdom #lessons #emotional #reading #currentread #whenbreathbecomesair #nicebook #emotionalread #life #death #love #relationships #bookish #bookstagram #booklover #booksongoals #bestbook #readmore #nonfiction #selfhelp #bookreivew #bookhighlights #bookinsight

When Breath Becomes Air - Paul Kalanithi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Oh dear, not every book would have an impact on readers as this one. Paul takes readers through the last few pages of his final days on earth. When the chapters of his lung cancer unfolds, I feel like I’m reading a journal, a diary, of a friend. The words translate his thoughts so honestly as if there is no space between readers and the author. He talked about how he, as a surgeon, learned to give the patients the meanings of life and deaths, rather than acting as a death fighter. Then he himself became the patient in his own hospital, in the room that he had cured diseases, or announced deaths, now fighting for his own life. Reading the book as he was dying, I can’t help but wonder when will the story end? And there it came, so sudden, when his wife took over the last chapters. I headed back to the previous page to swallow his last words once again. #book #reading #whenbreathbecomesair

What I love about memoirs is that reading them allows for me to immerse myself in a world that isn’t my own. It’s a way of learning about how vast the world is, and how life touches us differently. I think Paul’s ability to articulate the meaning that comes from his work in the medical field and the pursuit of understanding death really interesting. He’s an intelligent writer, with a captivating cadence in his words. What I think really shines through though is how much passion he has, and how all-consuming it was for him to pursue becoming a neurosurgeon. It comes through in his words, in the integrity and responsibility he holds as someone with the power in his (literal) hands to help change someone’s life, and their family’s. 🍃 Does anyone else like memoirs? (It’s one of my fav genres) Or if you’ve read this memoir, what did you think of it? 🍃

✨ spill the 𝕋𝔼𝔸 challenge ✨ I saw this challenge a LONG time ago and finally got around to doing it (and my baby has had me up since 3am 🙃) 𝕋: a book that 𝕥𝕒𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥 me something: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi completely destroyed me—mind, body, & soul (in the best way). It took a lot of reflection and introspection to process my feelings on what I read, but I felt it very much formed me into a better person. It is a powerful reminder that we may not know or understand someone’s story or outlook, but that does not strip us of our ability to take the time to listen and give them the respect & dignity that they deserve as a fellow human being. 𝔼: a book I didn’t want to 𝕖𝕟𝕕: The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré. Oh, how I fell in love with Adunni! If the author added 500 pages to this book, I’d fall over with excitement. Daré’s next novel, And So I Roar, is one of my most anticipated releases of 2024 🤩 𝔸: an 𝕒𝕦𝕥𝕙𝕠𝕣 I can’t get enough of: Abby Jimenez! I’m usually not big on romance, but I’m obsessed with the banter and storylines in her books! Usually I don’t like surprises, so I ALWAYS read the blurb before ordering a book, but I pre-ordered Just for the Summer completely blind. If you know me, you know that is VERY out of character. I can’t wait to work through her backlist! I tagged some bookish friends, but if you see this consider yourself tagged! 💭 Who is your top auto-buy author? Happy weekend, friends ✌🏼

when breath becomes air by Paul Kalanithi 🌬️ "At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated." The book started out a little bit slow for me & I think there are a few things that could have been kept shorter. But at some point this really got to me, especially being a nurse working in oncology and having done a lot of end of life care already. This gives a great inside look at how cancer changes everything for people, how they need to adjust their whole life and what kind of questions they have battle: "What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? " and I think Kalanithi did a great job a wrestling these questions and finding answers & making the most of his time. Also: I think every medic student or nurse should read something like this to understand at least a fraction of how the person in front of them feels in their situation. ( to this day there are sadly still a lot of people in health care lacking empathy etc.) Sometimes the book was written a little bit too poetic, which kind of felt unnecessary and out of place? To be honest, the Epilogue written by his wife was the best thing. She has such a way with words and really hit home and made me cry. The book got a heavy topic and I can imagen its not for everyone, but If you can stomach reading it, I think there can be something learned from doing so 3.75/5 ★

“When breath becomes air” is a profoundly moving autobiography that captures the essence of life’s fragility and the pursuit of meaning in the face of mortality. At 36 years old and peak of his career, neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. This memoir was written in his final months. Over the years Paul had examined the scan of patients, but he never thought he would one day be looking at his own scan. With the roles reversed, Paul now sees life as a patient. Through this transition, Paul reflects on the profound questions of existence, love and the purpose of life. I desperately hoped for a different ending, even though I knew it wasn’t possible . The epilogue written by Paul’s wife, was a very beautiful and heart-rendering finish to the book which left me sobbing like a child. P.S- I hope I am as brave as Paul when death comes. #bookstagram #whenbreathbecomesair #memoir #paulkalanithi📚📖📔 #books #bookrecommendations #bookcommunity #bookclub #fypage #explorepage #day12

Very sad book. At some point, I decided not to finish it because of how sad it made me when I read it. This book makes you questioned your life and the validity of all the decisions we make to achieve what we think are our dreams. This dude worked hard to become a neurosurgeon. He sacrificed a lot to realize that dream hoping to really start living once he got what he wanted, but life is a bitch. It gave him a lethal cancer which would force him to question his existence and the purpose of his life. He would progressively witness the disintegration of his body and the loss of everything he cherished including his life at such a young age. He would witness the birth of his child while dying slowly. This book brings up a lot of philosophical questions such as what is the whole point of life? What is important? How can we better appreciate today? How can we live meaningful lives since tomorrow is never guaranteed? Anyway, it is a powerful read. I read a lot of books throughout the year and I will start sharing my thoughts on those that really stand out. #whenbreathbecomesair #bookthoughts

This is a beautiful autobiography written by Paul Kalanithi. His personal struggle is sad and tragic. The epilogue written by Lucy, Paul’s wife is especially moving. Its amazing how family values and unconditional love guide people through hardships and storm. Brought tears to me several times while reading. It makes me think “what makes a life worth living”? My hats off to the doctors for their commitment and dedication. I cannot imagine myself going through the tough times especially during their residency. This is a MUST read. "The fact of death is unsettling. Yet there is no other way to live." (Paul Kalanithi) Dr. Kalanithi's memoir shook up my soul. He tells the story of his time serving the dying as a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist, and then facing the reality of death himself. This book gave me a renewed vision for the gift of life. It asked me: What makes life worth living? What do I value? And what if I lived my life based on the answers to those questions? Have you ever read this book? I’M GLAD MY MOM DOED AUTHOR : JENNETTE McCURDY This book had appeared in my Instagram feed multiple times; but somehow I was avoiding reading it. Few days back when I was kind of on a break from reading, it surfaced once again and this time I decided to pick it up. I am glad I did. This book is a memoir of child actor turned author Jennette McCurdy. It takes us on her journey from childhood to adulthood; while suffering through various insecurities. For the world she was a happy child but from within there were a lot of things that were going on. She was suffering from an eating disorder. She didn’t like acting at all which was quiet a surprise. And root cause of everything was her mother, whom she devoured like a goddess, until her mom died and she went into therapy for her eating disorder. Initially she struggled to accept the truth. She even left therapy. She felt guilt and shame to even think in this manner about her manner. Eventually she went back to therapy with another therapist and eventually accepted the truth. I am glad to read that she is doing really well with her mental health now and doesn’t suffer from eating disorders any more. I watched some of her interviews and felt really good and proud of her. This was the second memoir that I loved after #whenbreathbecomesair #imgladmymomdied #iamgladmymomdied @jennettemccurdy

Arguably one of the best memoirs ever written - you start thinking this is just another doctor rambling about the pains of life in the health industry but this is so much more. It is the story of a young boy in his early adult life, making the choice of whether pursuing the path of medicine or writing. It is his story of how he suceeded in neurosurgery but then suddenly had to deal with the pains of being on the other side of things as a cancer patient. Paul takes us through the gruesome life of a cancer patient. His writing is so good that I was begging for more. This is a wonderful story and has been loved globally since its debut. 🩺🏥🚑👨‍⚕️ #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi📚📖📔

“What makes life meaningful enough to go on living?” I don’t typically read a lot of memoirs, but this one was very moving and thought-provoking as it examines life’s purpose as the author, a neurosurgeon at Stanford, confronts his own mortality when he is diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. “You can’t ever reach perfection, but you can believe in an asymptote toward which you are ceaselessly striving.” I would definitely recommend this book to anyone as it is so well-written and shares many universal life lessons. "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi is a moving memoir that delves into the profound questions of life and death🌿 The book chronicles Kalanithi's journey from being a neurosurgeon to facing his own terminal illness. The writing is heartfelt, and Kalanithi's struggle with mortality is conveyed with raw honesty. This memoir answers the most important question we all should be asking " What makes a life worth living?". The blend of medical insights and literary reflections adds depth, making it accessible even to those without a medical background. For me personally, it was an emotional, heart-touching, stimulating Read . It made me question the ways of life, how a man's life changes his perspective on living - when he gets to know that his end is near. This poignant narrative encourages readers to ponder the meaning of life, leaving a lasting impression that goes beyond the pages of the book. “Death comes for all of us. For us, for our patients: it is our fate as living, breathing, metabolizing organisms. Most lives are lived with passivity toward death — it’s something that happens to you and those around you. But Jeff and I had trained for years to actively engage with death, to grapple with it, like Jacob with the angel, and, in so doing, to confront the meaning of a life. We had assumed an onerous yoke, that of mortal responsibility. Our patients’ lives and identities may be in our hands, yet death always wins. Even if you are perfect, the world isn’t. The secret is to know that the deck is stacked, that you will lose, that your hands or judgment will slip, and yet still struggle to win for your patients. You can’t ever reach perfection, but you can believe in an asymptote toward which you are ceaselessly striving.” - Paul Kalanithi, When Breath Becomes Air ✨ This book changed me. I sobbed uncontrollably when Paul’s wife took over the writing after Paul succumbs to his illness. ✨When you work in healthcare, you dive head first into the trauma of others, give your all, then return to your own body when you clock out after your 12 hour shift. You don’t think, yet act instinctively when someone else’s life is in your hands and you’re doing everything possible to keep them breathing. ✨As a nurse I’ve seen diseases take things from people that are more than skin deep. I’ve seen loved ones grieve in one room and celebrate in another in the same hour. I’ve had to provide comfort to others while giving comfort care measures to their loved ones in the bed. ✨ Life is a delicate flower and stepping back to read how Paul grapples with his own mortality is both devastating and eye opening. For him to understand the healthcare system at its core and have to face his own rapidly dwindling life, moves you. Thank you Paul for your dedication to science and to medicine. And to your family ♥️

—the book i can’t stop thinking about. Exploring the doctor-patient relationship while seeing through his journey as he finds life’s purposes and taught me to have one even in the face of uncertainty, no matter how long we have. From medical student to a neurosurgeon and being terminally ill patient, he didn’t stop making his life worth living till the very end and how love can make the worst days bearable with his wife, dr. Lucy. When Breath Becomes Air is honestly one of my most anticipated reads of the year and best book i’ve read recently. The first chapter reminded me of how compassionate and dedicated some people are. I love how this book told me to see things from many other perspectives. It was a bittersweet experience (the epilogue broke me, I've cried a lot) but I'm glad to witness his story through the pages he created. dr. Paul Kalanithi’s memoir is completed and published after his death. There is so much beauty but also heartbreaking in this short book and felt like it resonated with me very personally. If you are into memoir and/ non-fiction, this is a must-read book at least once in your life. #whenbreathbecomesair #bookstagram
