"When you come to one of the many moments in life when you must give an account of yourself, provide a ledger of what you have been, and done, and meant to the world, do not, I pray, discount that you filled a dying manโ€™s days with a sated joy, a joy unknown to me in all my prior years, a joy that does not hunger for more and more, but rests, satisfied. In this time, right now, that is an enormous thing." ๐Ÿ“– : When Breath Becomes Air โœ๏ธ Paul Kalanithi #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi #memoirs #lucykalanithi

WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR by PAUL KALANITHI Paul Kalanithi was at the prime of his life & had a bright future ahead of him as a neurosurgeon. But his cancer diagnosis shattered his dreams of a future he shared with his wife. He shares his triumphs & the despair of his career as a neurosurgeon, the people he managed to save & those he could not. Being young, he never imagined that one day he would be a patient himself. It all stared at a CT Scan. Paul was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in 2013. He questioned many things, what makes life worth living in the imminent prospect of death, what makes a virtuous & meaningful life, what do you do when there is no future to plan for but only the present to live in? When he heard he contracted cancer, he and his wife Lucy went through IVF to conceive a baby. He pondered about what it meant to have a child when his life was fading away. To extend his legacy, Paul also started writing his book 'When Breath Becomes Air' which exemplifies his initial passion for literature. He completed neurosurgery residency in 2014, & sadly died in March 2015, while working on this book. This is a profoundly touching, poignant & heartfelt memoir that discusses the fragility of life, the sensitive topic of death, its unpredictability & its impact on family, colleagues & community. Paul leaves behind his beloved wife Lucy & their daughter Cady. #alsademluchtwordt #paulkalanithi #whenbreathbecomesair #memoir #biografie #medical #nonfiction #goodreadschoiceaward #randomhouse #boek #lezen #boeken #bookstagram #boekstagram #book #boekentip #books #reading #instabook #booksofinstagram #booklover #boekenkast #lees #leestip #bookworm #booklover #lees #goodreads #kobo

1000 som Original 100% At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade`s training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, the next he was a patient struggling to live. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi`s transformation from a medical student asking what makes a virtuous and meaningful life into a neurosurgeon working in the core of human identity - the brain - and finally into a patient and a new father. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when when life is catastrophically interrupted? What does it mean to have a child as your own life fades away? Paul Kalanithi died while working on this profoundly moving book, yet his words live on as a guide to us all. When Breath Becomes Air is a life-affirming reflection on facing our mortality and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a gifted writer who became both.

โœจ spill the ๐•‹๐”ผ๐”ธ challenge โœจ I saw this challenge a LONG time ago and finally got around to doing it (and my baby has had me up since 3am ๐Ÿ™ƒ) ๐•‹: a book that ๐•ฅ๐•’๐•ฆ๐•˜๐•™๐•ฅ me something: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi completely destroyed meโ€”mind, body, & soul (in the best way). It took a lot of reflection and introspection to process my feelings on what I read, but I felt it very much formed me into a better person. It is a powerful reminder that we may not know or understand someoneโ€™s story or outlook, but that does not strip us of our ability to take the time to listen and give them the respect & dignity that they deserve as a fellow human being. ๐”ผ: a book I didnโ€™t want to ๐•–๐•Ÿ๐••: The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Darรฉ. "The fact of death is unsettling. Yet there is no other way to live." (Paul Kalanithi) Dr. Kalanithi's memoir shook up my soul. He tells the story of his time serving the dying as a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist, and then facing the reality of death himself. This book gave me a renewed vision for the gift of life. It asked me: What makes life worth living? What do I value? And what if I lived my life based on the answers to those questions? Have you ever read this book? Share your thoughts! *** In "Experiments in Inefficiency" my latest blog series, I share notes from my journey of moving from a life obsessed with efficiency to a life of intentional inefficiency, learning to resist unbiblical cultural and personal pressures to produce in favor of Jesusโ€™ easy yoke. When Breath Becomes Air โ€“ Paul Kalanithi After finally completing his residency to become a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi is diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. This is his memoir. โ€œI donโ€™t want to dieโ€. After coming face to face with death on a daily basis as a brain surgeon, and knowing on a very deep level that death comes for everyone at some point; when Paul is diagnosed with terminal cancer at a young age- the doctor becomes the patient, and he is not ready to die. Extremely profound, interesting, and heartbreaking โ€“ a must read for everyone. In the Foreword the prolific writer Abraham Verghese writes โ€œthere was an honesty, a truth in the writing that took my breath away. Be ready. Be seated. See what courage sounds like. Show how brave it is to reveal yourself in this way. But above all, see what it is to still live, to profoundly influence the lives of others after you are gone, by your words.โ€ โ€œHuman knowledge is never contained in one person. It grows from relationships we create between each other and the world, and still, it is never complete.โ€ 5 โญ๏ธ #paulkalanithi #bookstagram #memoir #booklover #booknerd

โ€œDeath comes for all of us. For us, for our patients: it is our fate as living, breathing, metabolizing organisms. Most lives are lived with passivity toward death โ€” itโ€™s something that happens to you and those around you. But Jeff and I had trained for years to actively engage with death, to grapple with it, like Jacob with the angel, and, in so doing, to confront the meaning of a life. We had assumed an onerous yoke, that of mortal responsibility. Our patientsโ€™ lives and identities may be in our hands, yet death always wins. Even if you are perfect, the world isnโ€™t. The secret is to know that the deck is stacked, that you will lose, that your hands or judgment will slip, and yet still struggle to win for your patients. You canโ€™t ever reach perfection, but you can believe in an asymptote toward which you are ceaselessly striving.โ€ - Paul Kalanithi, When Breath Becomes Air โœจ This book changed me. I sobbed uncontrollably when Paulโ€™s wife took over the writing after Paul succumbs to his illness. โœจWhen you work in healthcare, you dive head first into the trauma of others, give your all, then return to your own body when you clock out after your 12 hour shift. You donโ€™t think, yet act instinctively when someone elseโ€™s life is in your hands and youโ€™re doing everything possible to keep them breathing. โœจAs a nurse Iโ€™ve seen diseases take things from people that are more than skin deep. Iโ€™ve seen loved ones grieve in one room and celebrate in another in the same hour. Iโ€™ve had to provide comfort to others while giving comfort care measures to their loved ones in the bed. โœจ Life is a delicate flower and stepping back to read how Paul grapples with his own mortality is both devastating and eye opening. For him to understand the healthcare system at its core and have to face his own rapidly dwindling life, moves you. Thank you Paul for your dedication to science and to medicine. And to your family โ™ฅ๏ธ

Rarely has a book or a movie made me cry โ€“ this one sure did. I had read this long back, before my time on #bookstagram but this came up more than once in the last few days in certain discussions, so putting my thoughts here too. The true story of Dr. Paul Kalanithi has nothing spectacular in it, if one wants to be fussy. However, the way he faced his death gave me goosebumps in more than one place. Being a doctor himself, he went through his last phase knowing the outcome better than most others around him, but did his best despite it all. While he was suffering and going through it all, physically and emotionally, he thought about family, patients and eventually about himself (if at all). The book made me count my blessings and thank God more than a few times. It also reminded me of how insignificant we all are in the larger scheme of things called life. This is not a great review, but I do not want to give any spoilers and would hope you can read this book sometime if you are reading this review. You will love your life and appreciate having a normal life. Thatโ€™s something we donโ€™t value enough, tbh! #books #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi #reallifestories #readwithshashank #throwbackpost

At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade's worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir. Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while working on this book, yet his words live on as a guide and a gift to us all. "I began to realize that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense, had changed nothing and everything," he wrote. "Seven words from Samuel Beckett began to repeat in my head: 'I can't go on. I'll go on.'" When Breath Becomes Air is an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both. #paulkalanithi #whenbreathbecomesair #goodreads #bookstagram #ugandabooks #bookstore #booklover

B: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi Genre: Memoir Rating: โญโญโญ This one is a memoir by Paul Kalanithi written when he was fighting cancer. He is also a Neurosurgeon. Published posthumously, this one garnished many praises and accolades. His journey as a resident and dealing with cancer is talked about in this memoir. This book has been in my TBR for a very long time. I first heard this when I attended a โ€˜motivationalโ€™ webinar. I thought this would be heart-wrenching, painful and insightful. I know I shouldnโ€™t speak ill of the dead. But I couldnโ€™t resonate with the writing. It is unfortunate that a talented neurosurgeon is dying of cancer, but it is what it is - I particularly didnโ€™t like this memoir. The writing is good. Maybe, I failed to get emotional. For me, it felt like an informational presentation on cancer and different treatments. I have read memoirs before and they did hit me right in the gut (despite me not having any relatable parts) but not this one. Maybe Iโ€™m missing something? Did anyone else find it a bit dry? Or did it leave you wrecked? Hit me in the comments! #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #nonfiction #memoir #paulkalanithi #whenbreathbecomesair #cancer #kahaanisandbeyond

The problem, however, eventually became evident: to make science the arbiter of metaphysics is to banish not only God from the world but also love, hate, meaning - to consider a world that is self-evidently not the world we live in. That's not to say that if you believe in meaning, you must also believe in God. It is to say, though, that if you believe that science provides no basis for God, then you are almost obligated to conclude that science provides no basis for meaning and, therefore, life itself doesn't have any. In other words, existential claims have no weight; all knowledge is scientific knowledge. Yet the paradox is that scientific methodology is the product of human hands and thus cannot reach some permanent truth. We build scientific theories to organize and manipulate the world, to reduce phenomena into manageable units. Science is based on reproducibility and manufactured objectivity. As strong as that makes its ability to generate claims about matter and energy, it also makes scientific knowledge inapplicable to the existential, visceral nature of human life, which is unique and subjective and unpredictable. ๐Ÿ‘ Good book. How to describe the power of this book but I am pretty sure it will influence each of you in a different way. #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi #greatread #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookclub #bookrecommendations #worthtoread #ilovereading #bookworm #ili_bookescape #czytamwszystko #czytadล‚o #czytambolubie

โ€œWhen Breath Becomes Airโ€ by Paul Kalanith. This memoir is a powerful, heartbreaking, yet beautifully written account of what it means to face death while embracing life. ๐ŸŒŸ As a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi had a unique understanding of life and death, but his perspective shifted profoundly when he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. This book isnโ€™t just a story about illness; itโ€™s a reflection on identity, legacy, and what it means to live a meaningful life. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Kalanithiโ€™s eloquence and courage in exploring these themes have left a profound impact on me. Itโ€™s a reminder to cherish every moment, love deeply, and seek purpose in our lives. His journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of insurmountable odds. ๐Ÿ’” This book is a must-read, a meditation on life that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. Hey! ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿฅบ โ€žLiterature not only illuminated anotherโ€™s experience, it provided, I believed, the richest material for moral reflection. #bevorichjetztgehe #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi #penguinbooks #bookstagram #book #bookblog #bookblogger #buch #buchblog #buchblogger #bookstagramgermany #bookstagramdeutschland #read #reading #reader #lesen #booktok #booktokgermany #literaturherz

โ€œI have had an intercourse with the world, the special intercourse of writers and readers.โ€ โ€” Oliver Sacks Gratitude is four short essays written in the last two years of Oliver Sacks life. Mercury, My Own Life, My Periodic Table, and Sabbath (Sabbath, published two weeks before his death). MERCURY โ€œElements and birthdays have been intertwined for me since boyhood, when I learned about atomic numbers. At 11, I could say โ€˜I am sodiumโ€™ (element 11), and now at seventy-nine, I am gold.โ€ MY PERIODIC TABLE โ€œBismuth is element 83. I do not think I will see my eighty-third birthday, but I feel there is something hopeful, something encouraging, about having โ€œ83โ€ around. Moreover, I have a soft spot for bismuth, a modest grey metal, often unregarded, ignored, even by metal lovers. My feeling as a doctor for the mistreated or marginalized extends into the inorganic world and finds a parallel in my feeling for bismuth. I almost certainly will not see my polonium (eighty-fourth) birthday, nor would I want any polonium around, with its intense, murderous radioactivity. But then, at the other end of my tableโ€”my periodic tableโ€”I have a beautifully machined piece of beryllium (element 4) to remind me of my childhood, and of how long ago my soon-to-end life began.โ€ MY OWN LIFE I cannot pretend I am without fear. But my predominant feeling is one of gratitude. I have loved and been loved; I have been given much and I have given something in return; I have read and traveled and thought and written. I have had an intercourse with the world, the special intercourse of writers and readers.โ€ Gratitude . Nonfiction Review โ˜๏ธ A beautiful reflection on life by Paul Kalanithi, When Breath Becomes Air is a deeply unforgettable memoir. This book gives readers a medical look into mortality, and how one neurosurgeon to be deals with his own brain cancer. A poignant tale of Dr. Paul Kalanithi, a brilliant neurosurgeon - neuroscientist who was a few months shy of completing a residency in neurological surgery at Stanford. He was diagnosed with a stage IV lung cancer and the illness had changed everything - his life, his future dreams and ambitions. How do you reconcile everything you wanted to do, hoped to achieve and thought you had all the time in the world to do when you are diagnosed with a terminal illness which has left you with not much time. How do you prioritize and utilize whatever little time you have left? This is the dilemma which confronted Paul, "If I had some sense of how much time I have left, it'd be easier. Tell me three months, I'd spend time with my family. Tell me one year, I'd write a book. Give me ten years, I'll go back to treating diseases..." It is all the more poignant because Paul left his memoir unfinished, unable to finish it on account of his rapidly deteriorating health. Had he not been taken in his prime and had he lived, for one whose "my highest ideal was not saving lives - everyone dies eventually- but guiding a patient or family to an understanding of death or illness", he would have made great contribution as a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist. As a doctor and then as a patient he was fully cognizant of the inevitability of death. Death comes for all of us. He said that Darwin and Nietzsche agreed on one thing - the defining characteristic of the organism is striving. To be very honest, I procrastinated for the longest time with this book. I donโ€™t know if it was because I started this book during a vacation and then didnโ€™t feel like getting back to this genre, or it was just the writing. The pace is good, the story line is good too, I am going to be brutally honest- the parts with all the medical terms, sort of got me bored, and I would want to skip the passage, I didnโ€™t, but I really wanted to. On the positive side, this book, ah!! focuses on the most important aspect of life, that is Death, it is at least an important aspect for me which none of us can โ€˜modifyโ€™, but illness, diseases, death, accident- all these terms most of us donโ€™t find comfort in. No wonder most of us tend to live and follow a โ€˜healthyโ€™ routine, however such aspects as we know are also unpredictable. The author beautifully yet simply describes his journey from the start to the end, with lots of heart aching instances of himself and also other patients and individuals he has come to face with. We could have our entire lives planned out, but we then realise that it could come crashing down in a split second, and when it does happen to Paul, it broke my heart. From this book, I realised how ends can be so very heartbreaking, but even more beautiful, however I really urge yโ€™all to stick to the end and the part where his writes continues and completes the book for him, is so worth reading, youโ€™ll feel so emotional, you cannot miss that feeling. To have someone love you, care for you, cherish you, is the most beautiful feeling. Finally, Doctors. To be able to deal with such traumatic experiences themselves and yet enjoy the significance of their job that can be equally treacherous, soothing and complicated, I applaud them! When his wife says, โ€œThank you for loving meโ€, that is the kind of love I look forward to, through sickness and in health ๐Ÿงก โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ #bookreview #books #book #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi #doctors #lungcancer #cancer #survival #death #bookpost #booklover #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #emotional #emotionalbooks #memoir #fiction #fictionbooks #love #health

๐Ÿ“˜: When breath becomes air โœ’๏ธ: Paul Kalanithi Ratings: โญโญโญโญโญ/5 Review and Insights: I closed the final page of the book with a heart that felt both heavy and illuminated. This memoir is undeniably a masterpiece. Words fail me as I attempt to encapsulate its essence, its reflections, and its profound life lessons. If anything could compel you to dive into its pages, it would be the quotations and invaluable insights it offers. Through his departure from this world, Paul has left, us a treasure trove of literature that resonates deeply within our souls. Paul's journey has stirred something within me, prompting me to ponder the dreams I've long deferred. His unwavering commitment to his craft, to writing, serves as a reminder of the importance of pursuing that which brings us true joy and fulfillment. As I reflect on his on this book, I am inspired to embrace my own passions and aspirations before the sands of time slip away. Through his example, I am reminded of the urgency of living authentically and unapologetically, of embracing the things that bring meaning to my existence. Before it's too late, I am resolved to honor his memory by living a life that is true to my essence, by embracing the pursuits that bring me solace and fulfillment. #unolikesreading #bookreview #bookstagram #bibliophile #whenbreathebecomesair #whenbreathebecomesairbypaulkalanithi #paulkalanithi #unoandthebooks #reader #booksbooksbooks #bookrecommendations

I'm reminded of the book When Breath Becomes Air, an autobiographical memoir by Paul Kalanithi. Paul goes on a journey of finding fulfillment and meaning in his life. He studied literature, but eventually turned to medicine and found his calling as a neurosurgeon. Even as he faced a terminal cancer diagnosis, he continued to find purpose in his work and writing. His story is so inspiring. One of perseverance and exploring different passions and pursuits until you find what fulfills you. We are not all given the grace to know what path to take off the bat. That shouldn't stop us from exploring until we discover what makes us come alive. . . . . . #aexioacademy #quote #findyourpassion #careerpath #careerchange #careergoals #legacyofpurpose #whenbreathbecomesair #paulkalanithi #meaningoflife #remotework #wfh #remoteworking #remoteworklife #wfh #workfromanywhere #findremotejobs #findremotework #remoteworkcoach

I found out about this book from @lindsloveslitโ€”def recommend this one as well! #WhenBreathBecomesAir by #PaulKalanithi was a great memoir about him working to become a neurosurgeon and then getting cancer. This book highlights the importance of patient care (both from the author who was compassionate towards his patients given the severity of neurosurgery and then later when he was a patient.) My brother is also a physician, and while I love him,โ€ฆ heโ€™s got terrible bedside manner. Itโ€™s gotten better but he will just say the most extreme cases when people ask about something. (The additional stress that ppl get from dealing with drs is unnecessary.) I also appreciate the authors frank journey through his drive to finish med school and how this journey took a toll on his relationshipsโ€ฆ. How he and his partner had to have difficult conversations about having kids or not after he was diagnosed. I also canโ€™t imagine after so many years of school not feeling the urge to give up (which is also valid) and not continue with residency after such diagnosis. I learned a lot from the author and Iโ€™m so appreciative he worked so fiercely on the book. The epilogue written by his partner is also really good context to what else going on and what was missing from the book. ? Is there a memoir you recommend ? When breath becomes airโ€ฆ I do not know how to explain or review this book, as it is not a novel but a life story of a gifted man (Neurosurgeon) who died because of Lung Cancer and in a very young age. Paul described every stages of his cancer journey; how much he cried when given death sentence, how brave he was even on his last day, and especially the fact that he wanted to write this book and he did but it is sad at the same time a fortune that he couldnโ€™t finish his book but his wife did. Not to give away the exposure but I am sure you all shall end up ugly crying. It is odd how book of someone who is dead; his vision of life can motivate us to live every moment of life and to have understanding of everyone; things they go throughโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want to write more, though I want to but people do not read these days๐Ÿ˜ฌ However, I highly recommend this masterpiece, read it, understand it and try to be like Paul Kalanithi in some life stagesโ€ฆ #read #book #whenbreathbecomesair #life #death #bookreview #paulkalanithi #lucykalanithi

It was moving to see the author, who used to be a science-minded person, find the meaning of life and his own identity as his body deteriorates due to cancer, teaching us what is important.
