400,000… This is the approximate number of children who are in the foster care system on any given day in the US alone. Many of these kids are looking for a forever home and family. Many kids will age out of the system. Many of them will become a statistic. The challenge of parenting is never easy, and it comes with many ups and down. Opening your home to a child in foster care, or adopting a child is one way you can help! Sometimes the only way we learn about such cases is because there’s someone who cares enough. What is Ohio doing to prevent further cases of children being adopted, abused, and tortured to death by the adults who adopt them? Since there is no formal research on this, it is hard to say how many children have been killed in their adoptive placements. However, it seems there have been a number of these cases in Ohio. I cannot imagine the pain of losing one’s child in such a horrific way after making an adoption plan, with the promise of giving the child a better life. To put one’s trust in a system, an agency, an adoption worker or attorney, who makes this promise to them. #childabusepreventionmonth

I said it before… People often ask adoptees, “What about our adoptive parents?” My adoptive mother couldn’t have children because of a forced hysterectomy. She had a lot of trauma because she always wanted to be a mother. She loved babies. ALL babies. My adoptive parents adopted to have the baby experience. They got it. I never got my experience with my mother because of the shame of being an unwed mother in the Baby Scoop Era. My adoptive parents got what they wanted. I never did. I never got to meet my birth mother. I never had siblings until I was 53 years old. I never found my birth father until I was 55. I never had my health history until I met my biological family. I was denied access to my OWN birth certificate until the state of Tennessee said I could pay for it. I still remember my adoptive mother telling me how she prayed every day because she didn’t want my mother to change her mind. Was that for my best interest? If you are praying for a child to be separated from its family, is this for the child or you? My adoptive parents got what they wanted. I never got what I needed. They loved me but I needed help for the trauma I endured from being adopted. I needed my family. I needed genetic mirroring. I needed to know where I came from. I needed to know why I was relinquished. I needed to know my authentic self, not to live a lie. I needed to know what I was feeling was normal. I needed many things that I did not get because I was adopted. I wouldn’t have needed them had I not been adopted. Things have been quiet over here after some intense behaviors in March. We are in the home stretch with school and working hard on practicing respect and kindness during conflict. I attended a local adoptive mom retreat this month. It was refreshing to be around people who get it, and nice to have a day away. Therapy continues to be an essential part of how our kids are processing their stories. We are thankful for a trauma-competent, adoption-centered therapist who gets all the layered, nuanced behaviors and feelings. We also have an ongoing personal matter that has brought my husband and I uncertainty and grief. Parenting through grief is tricky, but it has led to opportunities to model regulation and normalize feeling sad and comforting one another. It’s also grown my empathy for the kids, that it is hard and exhausting to use healthy coping skills during periods of uncertainty. If it’s this hard with a fully developed brain and twenty plus years of faith, then how hard it must be for their developing brains! We have a big trip coming up at the end of May we are preparing for. When I’ve told people, every single response has been “you’re crazy.” And we are. But we are also trying to expand our kids’ windows of tolerance to do things outside of our normal routines. More on that later. #adoptiveparent #adoptionjourney

We hope these questions can spark some introspection and exploration for perspective and adoptive parents. For the past 27 years, I have struggled with my weight. Dealing with infertility, depression, anxiety, feeling like I wasn’t good enough, more focused on people pleasing, wearing a mask, lack of confidence, feeling tired and overwhelmed all the time. I remember being at my heaviest weight over 300 lbs and I went to sit on a chair in my backyard and the chair broke and I fell to the ground in tears. My ex husband had told me that he didn’t deserve a fat wife. I was in physical pain, emotional pain, mental pain, and I was sick of it. I just knew it was time to make some significant changes. I wanted to be a fun and present mom to my adopted son. I wanted my confidence back. I wanted to feel good in my own skin again. I was only 44 years old and I wanted the quality of life that I knew I could have and deserved. I knew I could get back into a size 10 again. Zallevo found me 3 years ago through my friend, Jonathan. I immediately felt deep down within that this was the nutritional product and program that would help me to feel more alive and help me reach me ultimate and fullest potential in every possible way. I’ve now released over 100 lbs off my body. I am sleeping better at night, I’m happier, full of energy, living true to myself, and I am more present in my life. Positive Adoption Language November 9 is World adoption day and therefore on the ninth of every month I will be sharing a positive adoption language educational post to help ignite conversation and create awareness to support the adoption community. This month’s post is about the action of adoption vs a descriptive noun about the adoptee. When you say the person ‘is adopted’ it has a negative connotation, insinuating the separation of that child from a family in regular present tense conversation creating an ‘identity’. When speaking about the adoption, it is past tense, considering it had happened at one point and now that person IS a part of the family. Today is International Pageant Day! Never did I think at 46 I would be a pageant gal…but here I am representing the Midwest 🙏🏼. And let me tell you, I had so many things I thought that were so different from the actual experience. Here are some key reasons I value pageantry, specially the International Pageant System: •making a difference Wow is all I can say. Seeing the impact of collaborative work and platform illumination is one of the MOST important things about pageantry. It all leads back to what you are passionate about. For me it’s not about the crown or the attention, but to point the attention to my work in regards to adoption awareness. 🤍 •sisterhood I have friends all over the world who would collab, support and trust me! •opportunities There are so many valuable opportunities, speaking engagements, podcasts and support that have presented themselves because of my illumination of my platform that people now recognize and identify with me in regards to adoption! •recognition The @intlpageants system recognizes the achievements of a married woman. So often things that we do are possibly muted or overlooked. Despite where or not we want the attention, recognition is a common human need. •faith and family It is a family affair. Watching my kids, husband and family proudly support my journey is beyond heartwarming. •collaboration I have in my life felt more supported, unified and qualified to be involved with things that matter.
