On Thursday we took a little adventure to the park and duck pond. This is something new that we have never done before and I wasn’t too sure how Logan would go. But just as he continues to do every day, he surprised me and really seemed to enjoy himself. He loved having so much space to explore and spent most of his time walking around just taking it all in. He spent some time on the swing and joined his cousins, aunty, sister and myself for a picnic. We went for a walk and he even participated in feeding the ducks! Yesterday I wrote a post about the book Far From the Tree. The book was published over four years ago, but is a very relevant read. Truth is, one of the best things to happen for Ade academically, was his enrollment at Young Explorers. This school has afforded him exposure to a variety of subjects and activities. One of these is Cooking and Ade embraces it wholeheartedly. The day he told me he wanted to be a Chef, I knew I had work to do! It turns out that Mama Mia is the perfect place for him to learn his craft. It’s the first place he ate gluten-free pizza and the first place he held a meal with his fingers!!! In his early days, he was cool with eating the pizza, but not touching it! Surrounded by a team who know and love him and assisted by his teacher Shanice, Ade is totally enjoying his volunteer stint at Mama Mia. This morning I took part in a panel chat for the employees of LinkedIn, talking about my life as a parent of autistic children. Sharing some of my experiences, the highs and the lows, and discussing the impact it can have on your career… Years ago, when Jude and Tommy were much younger, I was fortunate in that I had my own business. I could be attend appointments, work from home on the days I really couldn’t face the commute after 2 hours sleep. I was able to juggle for a while, do all the things I could to help support Tommy and Jude, but my work suffered. Not long after I became a single parent, I gave up London life and working there. I was able to freelance from home for a couple of years, travel to London when I had to, and just about make everything work. Then, when my parents’ health started to decline, I had to take a step back again. When once they had been able to help me by looking after Tommy so I could work, suddenly I was having to look after them instead. I’m fortunate that during this time my community on here has grown. It’s led to opportunities (both paid and unpaid) that I never would have imagined. I’ve worked with brands and charities, creating ads and delivering talks. I’ve been to Parliament and I’ve protested outside there. I’ve been to awards ceremonies, hosted coffee mornings, run virtual support groups. I’ve hosted a podcast, been interviewed on lots too. I’ve spoken on a stage in Frankfurt. I’ve created @s.a.a.clothing and have exciting plans for it this year. For years I felt like I was missing out on the career side of my life, but I’m starting to feel like I’m fulfilling that more recently. It was never part of the plan. I shared stories on here to let friends and family know what life was like. Thanks to all of you I’ve stumbled into something much more. My career, like much of life since becoming a parent hasn’t exactly gone to plan. As a counsellor, I organised Autism Awareness Assembly in NGFS,Alaknanda and was an essential part of it too. I felt very overwhelmed with the responses that I got after the performances by principal ma’am, teachers and students. Everybody appreciated it and felt that there is very less awareness about it and we should raise awareness and create an inclusive environment for these kids. Students enthusiastically participated and demonstrated all the required emotions for both skit and dance. I am very glad that Schools have started talking about it. The change is slow and steady but very essential and beautiful ❤️❤️ Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is a neuro-developmental disorder that leads to communication, social and behavioural challenges. To create awareness, acceptance and appropriate supports for children with ASD every year 2nd April is celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day and month of April starting from 2nd till 30th is observed as World Autism Awareness Month. In the skit, a school setup was seen where a child played the role of autistic child and showcased his problems in the class. The skit also depicted how teachers and students helped the child who faced difficult situations in different areas of the class. The dance was based on the song Anthem of Autism which is directed by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment- Government of India. It depicted the emotions of a child who has autism. The dance also gave the message that more than a disability Autism is about having a pure heart and being very sensitive. It is about finding a way to survive in an overwhelming and confusing world. Homework that should take 15 minutes but takes hours to get through? 😣 You're not alone. I've been hearing so many parents describing that struggle recently. It can be so frustrating because you know if they'd just sit down, sit up straight, focus, and get it done, they could have it done in no time at all. 😵💫 💔 But instead it's almost as if they insist upon making it painstaking and difficult and frustrating for everyone involved. I'm here to remind you that that's not their intention. They don't know why, but they know that this task is going to be so incredibly difficult for them. 😕 It's going to be exhausting, it's going to be uncomfortable, and it's going to feel frustrating and difficult. THAT'S why they get resistant. As a speech-pathologist, in my field we would focus on targeting executive function deficits…planning, organizing, initiating, breaking tasks up into smaller steps… but without focusing on the underlying brain 🧠 based issues this can be challenging, and can limit progress. Underlying issues like: ✊🏻Their grasp reflex makes it harder than it should to write. 👀Weak visual function makes it so hard to stay on task. 👂🏻They're exhausted from all of the auditory input from their school day. 😩 & They're tired of working so hard to sit up straight. But the good news is, none of these struggles have to last forever.💞 🧠Reflexes can be integrated, Auditory Processing gets stronger so quickly, and visual function is a simple fix. 💪🏻 DM me 💌 "homework" and i’ll send over a quick video that will teach you more about what's going on in their brain, why they struggle, and how you can help them overcome the struggle for good and unlock their best self. 🌱💗

Darolyn’s world was turned upside down when her son was diagnosed with Autism just before the age of 3. After going through various therapies and doctors, she thought there’s got to be more to this! She was told there was nothing more that could be done. After a bit of research, she decided to take her son’s health into her own hands. She was completely baffled when an alternative doctor she had found online, told her that the first step to her son’s recovery had to be cleaning up his diet. She did not understand why this could have anything to do with her son’s condition. Why did nobody tell her this before? So, this is where her son’s healing journey began. Darolyn agreed to come and tell me her story on the Podcast, hoping to give hope to parents who need it.
