During a protest that was addressing the dictatorship controlling Egypt, Dalia saw “many artists perform[ing] on the stages that continued to be erected around [Tahrir] square. There were poets and singers and some street theatre performers. This year I joined my colleague in advising the National Art Honor Society. One of our service projects this year were these meditation coloring books: Members created their own illustrated pages and together we assembled these books, the theme of which is “Be Well” (one of our district themes this year). Today I dropped off bundles of our coloring books for all 9 schools in our district, and they are currently being used in Student Support Centers, Nurses, and Psychologists offices, and classrooms. I’m so proud of what my NAHS Art Scholars have accomplished! This fast-paced, high-energy production engaged the community in a sobering tale of wrongful conviction and the courage to survive. Audiences were moved by the production, evidenced by an engaged Saturday talkback, participation with our community board about making change, and ongoing informal conversations across campus throughout the week. As a way of extending their theatrical activism, the production raised $700 for The Culture Project, a non-profit organization in New York City that has distributed contributions solely to real-life exonerees since the play opened in 2002. Introducing our next guest... @parisasabet Dr. Sabet is a composer of electroacoustic, acoustic, and film music. Her most recent interdisciplinary work, Silent, was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement in Toronto. Blue Girl is another of her recent works: a three-channel project created in collaboration with visual artist Raheleh Saneie, Blue Girl honors the stories of women who self-immolate as a form of protest against domestic violence and forced marriage. Presented at the 2020 virtual Nuit Blanche Festival, it was recognized by Now Toronto magazine as a “Stellar Highlight” of that year’s arts scene. In her academic work, Dr. Sabet focuses on Persian culture, and the synthesis of Western and Persian musical languages. In 2013, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada supported her study of a Persian folk dance, Čūb-Bāzī (“dance with sticks”). As an educator, her current research-creation project, No Need to Vanish, focuses on developing, designing, and producing contemporary learning resources that are practical, accessible and innovative for musicians from diverse personal and educational backgrounds. Her debut album, A Cup of Sins, was released on August 26, 2022. With funding from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, the recording includes a variety of her acoustic and electroacoustic works, all of which address issues of human rights, persecution, oppression, violence against women, and freedom of speech. I play Sunny Jacobs. She is faced with so much adversity, as are all the characters, but I feel she may have the best outlook. She is incredibly strong. I feel I have some things in common with her, such as her strength, but I truly don’t think I would be able to go through what she went through, and for that I admire her. Meet Xavier Thompson—David Keaton and Male Ensemble in THE EXONERATED “The Exonerated is an amalgamation of multiple tales, each one detailing the gross INjustices of the American JUSTICE system. It is a story that tackles the harsh realities of our law enforcement and court system, such as racism, abuse of power, and even mistaken identity. I play David, one of the Cops, Robert’s Judge, and the Farmer. Being one of the exonerated, David is the more despondent one of the group. The amount of hope he has for himself directly relates to the amount of faith he has in a higher power; both fluctuate throughout the story of his life, which is something I can relate to. The feeling of hopelessness coming and going, questioning my faith, and the overall loss of self—reading David’s story feels like reading my autobiography. My journey throughout the rehearsal process has been enlightening. Hearing the experiences of exonerated people firsthand heavily informed the choices I’m making for my portrayal of David. We have even taken our character work beyond the walls of Governors State and experienced a play with similar themes and elements to The Exonerated, deepening our appreciation for the stories we will tell on our own stage. From working on this production, I have learned the impact that a stage and a theatrical production can have on social change. Meet Kevin Kohn—Kerry Max Cook and Male Ensemble in THE EXONERATED “The Exonerated tells the stories of six wrongfully convicted inmates and their paths to freedom. The play’s themes touch on how racism and classism are prevalent in the U.S. criminal justice system; how tampered evidence can be used to convict innocent people; how the mistreatment and abuse within the prison system can cause people to lose their hope, faith, and humanity; and how strong a person’s will to survive against a cruel and unfair world can be. Kerry is a very honest and tenderhearted person. Early on he admits to doing some stupid things with some not so good friends when he was a kid, but nothing that should have put him on death row. Our first project of the semester is new for us this year - we created these really fun decorative tiles. The purpose of this project was to introduce students to basic artistic concepts (designing for and applying the Rlements and Principles) while also teaching no some helpful techniques (additive and subtractive building in clay) WHILE ALSO working collaboratively (students randomly picked tile spaces, and had to re-design their first draft to incorporate something from a neighboring tile). The collaborative bit was my favorite part of this assignment because it forced students out of their comfort zone, required them to grapple with the consciousness of the entire class, and rely on others for the alterations made to their own design.
