A Single Rose By Muriel Barbery Translated by Alison Anderson In this slim volume, Barbery returns to many of the themes readers found in her most well-known earlier work, The Elegance of the Hedgehog. I picked up A Single Rose because I had just visited Kyoto, and I was curious to see the city through the eyes of this talented French writer. The book finds Rose, a single woman in her forties, visiting Kyoto for the first time following the death of her father. While the two never met, Rose is gradually introduced to different facets of his life as she’s taken around Kyoto by Paul, her father’s assistant, on an itinerary he planned for her prior to his death. Likes: Barbery likes mixing philosophy in with her stories, and this tendency works here, giving heft to what otherwise would be a wisp of a book. How do we come to know someone? Can we ever know someone whose culture we’re unfamiliar with, and don’t fully understand? Can a shared love of beauty connect us, even from beyond the grave? These are some of the ideas Rose, Paul, and the few other characters wrestle with in between visits to temples, shrines, and restaurants. The reader, like Rose, is caught in a state of slightly diminishing disorientation – one that will be familiar to many travelers, and, as the book also observes, those caught up in grief. The descriptions in this novel are absolutely gorgeous, which feels like both a triumph of writing and of translation. A river in the rain, a tree in an interior courtyard, an ever-changing flower arrangement, the rocks in a temple garden – each is fresh and perfectly formed in my mind’s eye from the words on the page. Dislikes: At times the narrative began to sag a little under the weight of all the symbolism. For example, while I appreciated the link between each section and a particular flower, it at times felt a bit obvious and heavy-handed. FYI: mental illness, parental abandonment, death of a parent, death of a spouse. We had rain at our house for the first time since July 16th this morning. That means the temperature has dropped from 108 yesterday to the mid-90s today. Is it still summer where you live, or has fall begun?

A Single Rose by Muriel Barbery, translated by Alison Anderson. Rose is a 40 year old French woman, who has never known her father. Yet she has just flown to Kyoto after he has passed away for the reading of his will. Before meeting the lawyer however, she spends time travelling to different temples and gardens with her father's assistant Paul and slowly learns more about her father through the people in his life. But will Rose's bitterness and loneliness leave her resenting her father or can she let down her guard and soften? As with the previous Barbery book I read (The Elegance of the Hedgehog), I did find this difficult to connect with at first. I find the author uses very flowery language, something that I find hard to grasp at times. Beyond the first chapter or two however, either I got used to the writing or it wasn't as dense as I found it easier to pick up the book and read. The descriptions of the landscapes and food are especially rich and vivid. Each chapter starts with a fable which has some element of botany to it. We slowly learn more about each of the characters, Rose and Paul in particular. As the story progresses, the more likeable Rose becomes and the more I was interested in her story. This does work as a novella but I think it could have easily have been expanded to a longer novel and maybe have been more fleshed out. I think so flashback scenes of Rose as a child with her mother could have worked, bringing a more 'show, don't tell' element to the book and to understand why Rose is so sad at the beginning of the book. August Hopefuls! I posted a reel yesterday showing these hopefuls on my shelf but I’m going to talk a bit more about some other books I want to read this month •How to Build a Boat by Elaine Feeney is the @tiredmammybookclub, chosen as the theme this month is a book from @thebookerprizes Longlist. There’s 4 Irish authors on that list, which is just incredible •Miss Kim Knows by Cho Nam-Joo is out later this month & I have a NetGalley ARC as I enjoyed the authors previous book Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 •Other books for Women in Translation month I have as audiobooks are Marzahn, Mon Amour by Katja Oskamp and The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa. •Finally right at the end of July I started back reading the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny, after a longer than anticipated break. I started The Nature of the Beast which I hope to finish There may be some other additions, we’ll see how the month goes! ‘𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴’ After reading the enigmatic 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘨, I enthusiastically searched for further published works by Muriel Barbery and that’s how I came across 𝘈 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘴𝘦. Though written by the same author, the two works are simply not comparable. 𝘈 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘴𝘦 is a quiet meditation on loss, grief and self-discovery. Muriel’s trademark reflective and philosophical musings are still prevalent however, the narrative and characters themselves fall short of depth and form. I wasn’t truly able to connect to any of it and the ubiquitous descriptions of all the Japanese flora was completely lost on me. Each chapter is preceded by a short, ancient Japanese legend which then knits itself into the main narrative. This, I thought was quite clever and thought provoking - the folk stories themselves, very intriguing. The strength of this novel is that it showcases Muriel’s range and dynamism ensuring that she is not boxed in but open to experiment with forms. I will continue to explore Muriel’s work and am certain that I am bound to find another piece to fall in love with.
