Join us on Wednesday 27 September at North Down Museum for an evening of poetry and music at Aspects Festival's opening event; Galicia Exchange and Concert with Keith Payne, Xavier Quiepo and Su Garrido Pombo. The Savage Acres is a contemporary poetry performance by Keith Payne which celebrates the everyday; hymns to kitchen islands, homilies to the turn in the stair and rhymes to the cascades of profiterole desserts that come tumbling our way. This reading will be delivered in Payne's signature and engaging style. Awarded the Aodh Ruadh Γ“ Domhnaill Poetry Exchange 2023, Xavier Quiepo’s poems delve deep into the marine world where he spent much of his working life. As a biologist and poet, Quiepo shares his wonder at the great whales and astonishment at the velvet crabs, as he sings canticles to sand, foam and waves. The Patios of Light from multi-award- winning singer Su Garrido Pombo, follows the road of a hundred turns down from the mountains of Vigo, in the northwest of Spain. β€˜When we’d get back to the city, we’d fall silent, until our mothers sang lullabies that rose through the patios… Patios of Light is the hymn to those neighbours, those women, our grandmothers, sisters and aunts who made that journey.’ πŸ“ North Down Museum πŸ“… Wednesday 27 September ⏰ 8pm 🎫 Β£8 Book via Aspects website. This evening I took my love of books to a whole new level and learnt how to make my own!! I foresee lots of luscious sketch pads in my future! I attended a wonderful workshop with @lucy_turner_print who took us through the processes of making two different types of books. Lucy was so knowledgeable and helpful which made learning this new skill fun! This was part of the Aspects Festival, which runs every year in Bangor, and is run in conjunction with @cultureardsandnorthdown The workshop was in the gorgeous setting of the North Down Museum and all materials were provided. We were given refreshments and I can safely say that at Β£20 per person this was worth every penny! I’m so glad I was able to hop along on my crutches and enjoy this new experience! #northdown #aspectsfestival #bookbinding #learning

At the end of 2021, five writers were invited to write and record an essay – to uncover the untold stories and idiosyncrasies of the everyday and hidden histories of Northern Ireland in its centenary year. Three of these writers Claire Mitchell, Glenn Patterson and MΓchaΓ©l McCann will read their essays live at a special event at Aspects Festival. These essays were part of a short series, Another Northern Ireland, commissioned for BBC Radio 3’s The Essay, and also featured on BBC Radio Ulster’s Storytellers. They were co-produced by Conor Garrett and Ophelia Byrne. πŸ“ Bangor Castle πŸ“… Saturday 1 October ⏰ 7pm 🎟 Β£10 For more info and booking visit Aspects Festival website. Great night playing at the launch of 'The Black Dreams: Strange Stories from Northern Ireland,' a collection of short stories edited by the multi-talented Reggie Chamberlain-King. Privilege to play in the auspicious surroundings of Bangor Castle. Didn't get a group shot of the wonderful band, but there's always next time. Buy the book here or from all good book shops https://blackstaffpress.com/the-black-dreams-9781780733289. Big up my old mate @gerardmckeown_writing who has a story in the book too. β€œI am Water” - Part 1 Today, we had the privilege of running our Paddle & Poetry session as part of #aspectsfestival Guided by the awesome and talented @amylouisewyattpoet we turned our on (and in 😜) the water experience into poetry. I can only speak for myself, but I found the ideas and processes that Amy guided us through to be incredibly effective and made even me, feel as if I had created something of literary value πŸ˜‚ As for the rest of the participants, I can tell you that there are some incredibly talented people in this group. I also found it fascinating that everybody observed/felt/experienced/noted different things in their work. The paddling poets will do a bit of homework in the coming days and the final works will be published 🀞soon, so keep an eye out for Part 2 of this post. A fantastic experience, thank you for sharing your talents @amylouisewyattpoet and nudging/guiding/encouraging us all to think freely and express those thoughts with confidence. I really cannot wait to read the final pieces, and I think you will all enjoy it too… #peopleandpaddles #paddleboardingpoets #thereisapoetinallofus

- ANCESTOR NOTEBOOK - The Album Launch. . We can't believe it's been almost a year already since we released 'Ancestor'. The Album launch took place prior to our official release in the stunning banquet hall of Clandeboye Estate as part of Aspects Festival. It felt like a special place to play our new songs. I have a little bit of family history connected to the Estate. My Nanna Francis used to be the head cook for the Dufferin's. She also lived in one of the wings of the estate with my Papa John, my Dad and his seven siblings. It makes me wonder how the hell they left the place intact. My lovely second cousin Fergus is currently the head gardener. He looks exactly what you would imagine a gardener called Fergus to look like. Michael and I are still trying to worm our way in as musicians in residence but apparently we’re not to be trusted about the place either. . It was a beautiful night sharing the stage with Arco String Quartet, made even more beautiful as my mum got to attend in between a few ropey days due to illness. It was the last live show that she got to attend and she said we did her proud. That's all the review we needed to go by. ❀️ That's her, my beautiful mum in the background of the first image. Filmed by my dad during a family holiday around 25 years ago. She didn't see that footage coming so it was a cracking surprise for her and dad to see that night. Oh to turn the clocks back. . 2019. The year of the sea. The year of mermaids. The year our second album 'Ancestor' got released. The year we welcomed a bloody good manager and sound engineer to our team.
