Here’s a brand new character, based on the author’s experience as a child. You may know Babita Sharma from her work as a journalist, and news presenter across the BBC and other channels. She’s also written about her memories when young living above a number of corner shops; and, released a book on what those shops say about the UK, their history and what you can tell about someone from their purchases. As such, it is absolutely fitting that in her first children’s book, she’s headed to familiar terrain and introduces us to a brand new sleuthing lead character. She helps her parents, and knows every inch of the shop. One day she notices some intriguing footprints, collects her mission kit, and sets out to explore. I really love the images of people chatting and shopping, it’s a slice of life and really catches the eye. I think this would make a lovely gift, there are so many delightful elements to unpack and have fun with at bedtime. Gilead by Marilynne Robinson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: fiction Age: 12+ I loved this; I loved the beautiful writing of Ms. Robinson, and this story that seems a full, deep, lifetime of thoughts and living she just put to paper. But If I were to tell you basically what this story is about, you’d be bored. Like, “this is a book about a dying man writing about his life to his son”. Boring. Or, “this is about a dying preacher reflecting, and writing to the son of his old age about his life, home, God, and memory”. A bit better but still…. So let me just leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the story: “You feel your obligation to a child when you have seen it and held it. This is a story about a South Asian family and a penguin who loves their food. It’s very fun but it’s also SO personal to me. To think that it’s being read aloud to all those Reception classes, and all the ones to come?! Today I’m joining @mrsbrownsbookbox and others sharing #8brilliantbooks perfect for an Early Level classroom. I teach P1/2 which bridges Early into First level and here are eight (of the many books) that we’ve read, enjoyed and discussed together. There has been a lot of chat this week on Instagram in the kidsbookstagram community about the books most commonly read by and to children in the UK, namely the picturebooks that appear month after month and often year after year in the bestseller charts. As a parent and teacher I think it is important that our children experience a range of books at home and in the classroom. And just in the same way that a teacher is expected to carefully plan resources for a given lesson, I also think that the texts we choose at story-time should be well considered. Using books featuring anthropomorphic animals can be a good way to explore universality of experiences, however we must also balance these texts with books featuring real people and real lives that reflect realities. The stories we read should depict various cultural backgrounds, different family configurations, and disabilities. We shouldn’t shy away from texts that explore emotions and fairness, or those that consider big topics like climate change. My experience is that young children are often a lot more insightful and open to ideas than we give them credit for. I’ve had so many wonderful conversations with my pupils and my own children when they were little. I am not saying that we shouldn’t read the books featured on the bestseller lists at all, just that there are so many other amazing books to discover. Some of the ways that I have incorporated more classic or commonly read books in the classroom are: reading Julia Donaldson’s books translated into Scots or watching a youtube video of The Very Hungry Caterpillar read aloud in French. In both of these scenarios, I’m relying on my pupils’ knowledge of these well-known texts so we can focus on vocabulary rather than plot. And Dear Zoo could be used as a route into critical literacy exploring that fact that all the characters are male, for example. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. ⬇️
