I talk so much on here about autism and my lived experience as a late diagnosed autistic person however let’s talk about what actually is autism? (and a little bit of what it isn’t!) ♾️ Autism is a neurotype / developmental disorder, so its a brain type. Therefore if you’re autistic you are infact born autistic, autism can’t be developed later on in life. Since autism is a neurotype that also means it’s a life long disability, there is no cure (nor should there be). Some things autism involves: 👉🏻Repetitive & retrictive behaviour 👉🏻Struggles with routine 👉🏻Hyper & hypo sensitivity to sensory aspects of the environment 👉🏻Meltdowns & shutdowns 👉🏻Highly focused interests & hobbies 👉🏻Social communication & interaction challenges What autism isn’t: ❌ A linear spectrum from the “least” to the “most” autistic person ever. Autistic people and allistic people aren’t on the same spectrum at all, they’re two completely different neurotypes. ❌Its not an illness that needs to be cured or something that needs to be “fixed” ❌A “problem” that appears only in children or boys. { #ACCESS image description: all pages are on a lilac background with dark purple text, all large bodies of text are in bionic font. Page one is titled “What is autism?” in large text in the centre with “and a little bit of what it isn’t” in small text in the right bottom hand corner underneath the title. Day 17 of #30daysofpositiveneurodiversity for #autismacceptancemonth Being able to keep going... Neurodivergent individuals feel very deeply, especially when they have been wronged or treated poorly, which can happen often sadly. Upsets aside, I do recognise my need to keep going and not let it stop me from where I need to be or who I am. Yes, it knocks me and probably longer than most. But I don't give up! I wouldn't say I am resilient... just determined, and I celebrate that I have the courage to keep moving forward no matter how long it takes me!

4/17/2024, 9:02:04 AM

Day 15 of #30daysofpositiveneurodiversity for #autismacceptancemonth I am 100% myself, no masking, no hiding, just me! I know who I am , and I am confident in who I am and where I want to be. I know not every neurodivrse individual is as self accepting as I am, but this is why I am doing this... acceptance starts with yourself, and even if not everyone accepts you for being you.... then that doesn't matter. You being happy being you is what is really important! surround yourself with people who celebrate themselves and celebrate you.

Day 13 of #30daysofpositiveneurodiversity for #autismacceptancemonth : Connection: I feel very connected to people, nature, and animals. If I like you, I want to keep you. And I will just care so deeply. I get protective and want to look after whoever is in my life and make sure they are ok, and if they are wronged, I want to stick up for them. It is very hard for me to let go. Animals seem to just warm to me, follow me, or go up to me. It shows how gentle I am and how caring I am as they just seem to know. Here are some photos of some of my animal encounters.

Day 9 of #30daysofpositiveneurodiversity for #autismacceptancemonth I actually like how my brain works... It's so unique and different! People often find me interesting and want to spend time with me.. because I'm different, maybe to figure me out, or because I don't judge anyone, or because I am completely happy being myself so they can be themselves. I find friends can let their guard down and be more spontaneous or like to be open and honest with me. So yep... I like my autistic brain 🧠 * also new profile pic, and I have added some highlights buttons which I hope to add more to. Also, check me out on tiktok as I want to add more content, which will be less serious and more 'tsm humour, outfit shares and crochet makes. YOU DON’T!!!🧡✨ And yes that includes: 👉🏻 If you have to cut off toxic family members or friends 👉🏻 If you can no longer do as much as you used to be able to do! 👉🏻 If you require more support than you did before 👉🏻 You don’t like / aren’t interested in the same things as you were before Etc I could go on!! But you don’t need to apologise for no longer forcing yourself to mask and to fit into places that don’t serve you or cause you ridiculous amounts of stress!! All large bodies of text are in bionic font. Page one is titled “Functioning labels are harmful!” In large text in the centre. Above it are 4 different labels going side to side. Going from the left they read “high functioning”, “severe autism”, “mild autism” & “low functioning” Page two is titled “what are functioning labels?” With text underneath that reads “Functioning labels are given to autistic people by allistic (non-autistic) people, based on their perception of us, to categorise us based on how useful we are on our “ability” to function in society. Functioning labels do not and have never been about helping autistic people and determining the amount of support they need. They’re also outdated and cling to a time we as a community are trying to move forward from, which is when Aspergers was a highly used diagnosis.” Page three is titled “Why are functioning labels harmful?” With text underneath that reads “Functioning labels don’t reflect how much support we as autistic people actually need as I said before they’re based on an outside view of how allistic people view Us. Our entire identity shouldn’t be centred around allistic peoples experience. They’re rooted within the history of eugenics, ableism and putting us in some sort of hierarchy of how useful we are to society. Also they’re factually just wrong, they support the idea of the autism spectrum being linear.” IMAGE DESCRIPTION CONTINUED IN COMMENTS ↓ #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic #DiversityAndInclusion #AuDHD #AutismAwarenessMonthAutismAcceptanceMonth

But also there’s no “more” or “less” autistic, autism is a brain type and despite many peoples beliefs, the autism spectrum isn’t liner going from not autistic to “really autistic”. (Hey Friends! Today is April 2nd and you know what that means. Today is World Autism Day! For everyone who follows me and my new followers, this is my story. ) Hi, my name is Kay and I am Autistic. I was diagnosed with Autism when I was 14 years old. This was when I was in the 8th grade , going into my Freshman Year of High School. I was a little shocked when I got the diagnosis and hid it for a while due to a fear of being bullied for it , which I regret. Now, I am not afraid of telling everyone. I could read books by the time I was two years old. When I was in Kindergarten, I was sent to a first grade teacher because of how high my reading level was. In middle school, I had the reading level of a high schooler. Because of this, I loved to read books like ‘ Diary of A Young Girl ‘ by Anne Frank. However, I wasn’t not good at math. I also don’t like big crowds, however, being an all star cheerleader and going to WWE shows is helping me get used to them. I’m not a people person, but, doing this is helping. My special interests are beauty, fashion, music, wrestling , and true crime. And yes, I am an Autistic Swiftie. Signs of Autism: Avoiding Eye Contact when talking to someone Having difficulty trying to explain emotions ( This is very hard for me) Having intense and or unusual interests and staying on them Having a lot of repetitive behaviors Having a routine of lining things up or other things Being upset if something changes Struggling to communicate and form relationships Sensitive to sounds ( I am) Problems relating to others If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me! #autisticinfluencer #autismawareness #highfunctioningautism #autisticwomen #myautismstory #autismacceptance #autismawarenessmonth #worldautismday #autisticgirl #neurodivergent #autism #contentcreator #autisticswiftie

Something I’m sure A LOT of you have heard at least once in your lifetime because I know I definitely have. That shouldn’t be the norm though… It shouldn’t be something that we’ve all have to hear. There’s such a lack of knowledge & acceptance when it comes to disabilities in general, so many misconceptions and so much ignorance. I can’t even begin to explain just how harmful it is this narrative that all disabled people are lazy and lucky for not having to work, again like I said above, like we’re just on some sort of never ending holiday. Something needs to change and it starts with conversation. { #ACCESS image description: a screenshot of a status from @emeraldbuttons on LinkedIn on a pale green background, with a scribble graphic both in the bottom left and the top right, reading Stop telling disabled and chronically ill people they’re “lucky” because they can’t work! It’s not lucky to be disabled and/or chronically ill. It’s not a ‘break’, a day off’, or a ‘holiday’ Living with a disability or chronic illness is not a choice anyone would willingly make. It’s something that has a life-altering impact on our day to day lives. Often including a lot of appointments, treatments, uncertainties and that’s not even including the long list of traits or symptoms. It’s a constant battle, a fight for awareness, accessibility and for our voices to be heard. So, the next time you’re tempted to say someone is ‘lucky’ for not having to work, take a moment to consider what their daily life might actually entail. Instead, let’s support and uplift others instead of judging them, educate yourself about the realities of disability and chronic illness to end the cycle of ignorance and insensitivity.} #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic #DiversityAndInclusion #AuDHD

I know I made a post about my favourite quotes the other day, but I couldn’t not share this one too. Honestly I’d you’re autistic and looking for a good book based on autism, this is definitely a great place to start. It’s great if you’re not a reader too as it’s short but packed with relatable content✨ { #ACCESS image description: A graphic on a pale pink background, with a cream box in the middle that reads, in dark brown bionic text, “I am fighting to live a neurotypical life. Where did it get me? Nowhere I wanted to be. I was sad, burnt-out, lonely, demoralised and confused. The importance of the environment begins to make sense on an emotional level. I need to stop trying to be less autistic and start creating an environment in which I can thrive in my autism. I must leave the shadows of an imperfect past and start living now.” - Laura James, Odd Girl Out.” Around the box there’s 2 sets of lines, one on the bottom left and one on the bottom right, coming from the box.} #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic #DiversityAndInclusion #AuDHD #OddGirlOut

Things I wish I would of known before getting diagnosed autistic!! Is there anything that I didn’t mention that you wish you would of known before hand? Let me know!✨ { #ACCESS image description: All pages are on a lilac background with dark purple text with 3 small purple flowers in both the bottom left and hand top right hand of each page. All large bodies of text are in bionic text. Page one is titled “6 things I wish I knew before getting an Autism Diagnosis!” in large text in the centre.” Page two is titled “How long it’s going to take...” with text underneath that reads “The whole diagnostic process takes a while, and I’m not even specifically just talking about the waiting list, which is a long time within itself. When I first got referred for a autism assessment by the NHS back in 2019 I was told I would be waiting 7 years. (Eventually I went private. However even after the wait, the assessment itself isn’t a short one. Mine personally was done in one sitting, which was around 4 hours. However I know a lot of places do it in multiple sittings, maybe 2 or 3, with weeks wait in between each appointment. So be prepared for the length of the process.” Page three “The support afterwards will be different to what you expect.” with text underneath that reads “Unfortunately there is little to no support available post diagnosis, especially for adults. I was actually shocked by just how little there really is. So be prepared for either yourself, a family member, friend or carer to have to fight for yourself and your access needs.” IMAGE DESCRIPTION CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS ↓ #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic #DiversityAndInclusion #AuDHD

Honestly… this was one of the most important things I ever learnt. Before being diagnosed autistic (& even for a while after) I was CONSTANTLY doing things that would cost me my mental health just to please others and to avoid any conflict or judgement. It was so ridiculously damaging for me and fed into me being constantly burnt out. I didn’t think I was aloud to say no and that just be it. I thought I had to come up with a million excuses to why I couldn’t, or even lie. I didn’t think I was aloud to put them boundaries in place in order for me to be okay but guess what? You can! Being diagnosed autistic definitely helped a lot, it gave me that push because I felt like I had a “valid reason” to say no, I couldn’t do something but guess what? You not wanting to do something is a valid enough reason, not doing something because it’s going to jeopardise your mental health, regardless of a diagnosis or not, is a valid enough reason. You’re aloud to say no & you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone either. If it’s something that’s not making you happy and damaging your mental health then why are you doing it? Learning to respect my bodies boundaries & cutting people off who didn’t was honestly one of the best things I ever did. Now sure, do I still struggle at times? Absolutely but you know what, I’m still 10x better off than I ever was when I was sacrificing my mental health for others & in fear of what they would think. #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic #DiversityAndInclusion #AuDHD

Emotional dysregulation is something I’ve struggled with A LOT, especially in the past. Being AuDHD and struggling with multiple MH conditions that also contribute to emotional dysregulation has been HARD at times, especially when I didn’t know what it was or how to cope with how I was feeling, how was I meant to re-regulate? If you too struggle with emotional dysregulation I’ve put some of my favourite, and most effective ways (for me) on the last slide!🫶🏻 {ACCESS: image description: all graphics are on a pale green background with dark green text. All large bodies of text are in bionic reading and there’s a “scribble” doodle graphic in both the bottom left and top right corner of every page. Page one is titled “Emotional Dysregulation“ in large text in the centre, with small text above it that reads “let’s talk about” Page two reads in the centre “Emotional dysregulation involves trouble controlling your emotions and how you act on those feelings. Despite seeming completely reasonable to you, to those around you your emotions and reactions may seem out of proportion compared to what you’re reacting to. Emotional Dysregulation is commonly linked with conditions such as ADHD & BPD but can be a trait of many other conditions and down to other factors too” Page three reads in the centre “As well as conditions such as ADHD and BPD there can be many other factors that cause emotional dysregulation such as: • Childhood trauma • Environmental factors • Traumatic brain injuries • Other mental health conditions & neurodivergences such as: Anxiety disorders, Autism, Bipolar disorder, C/PTSD, Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder” IMAGE DESCRIPTION CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS ↓ #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic #DiversityAndInclusion #AuDHD #BPD #EmotionalDysregulation

ASPERGERS. The history of the word, why we no longer use it and it’s links to ableism and anti-semitism… There are multiple reasons why the term Asperger’s should no longer be used & if you’re still using it please actually take this information and the time to fully educate yourself. By using the term Asperger’s you’re actively harming both the autistic & Jewish community by honouring this man. { #ACCESS image description: all pages are on a lilac background with a dark purple text. All large bodies of text are in bionic font & there’s a scribble graphic in the bottom left of each page. Page one is titled “Aspergers” in large text in the centre with smaller text underneath that reads “The history of the word, why we no longer use it and it’s links to ableism and anti- semitism” This page also has a scribble graphic in the top right corner. Page two is titled “the history of Hans Asperger...” with text underneath that reads “The word “Aspergers”, or you may have heard it before as “little Einstein syndrome”, comes from a man named Hans Asperger. Hans Asperger was a nazi supporter in ww2, who worked very closely with Hitlers regime and its euthanasia program. Here he sent over 800 disabled children, who he deemed to be “on the wrong end of the spectrum” to be tortured, experimented on and killed. However some children he deemed worthy aka autistic people who were smart or could mask, therefore he could use these children to contribute to the Nazi regime.” Page three is titled “Why the term Aspergers is problematic & can’t be reclaimed.” With text underneath that reads “The word “Aspergers” or “Aspie” represents antisemitism and therefore can be extremely triggering for Jewish people. By continuing to use these labels you’re simply dismissing their experiences by honouring this man.” IMAGE DESCRIPTION CONTINUED IN COMMENTS ↓ #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic #DiversityAndInclusion #Aspergers #Aspie

As I said earlier in the week today is a day that’s very close to my heart for so many reasons🧡 I feel like one of the biggest issues people who SH receive is people have a huge lack of understanding when it comes to “why” and them simply just not understanding. So coming up with other, false, beliefs in their heads in an attempt to understand and often this does A LOT more damage than good. So let’s talk about some of the reasons “why”… { #ACCESS image description: all pages are in a light purple background with dark purple text. All large bodies of text and in bionic reading and there’s 3 little purple flowers in both the bottom left and top right hand side of the page. Page one is titled “But why do people self Harm?” In large text in the centre with smaller text underneath reading “Self harm / injury awareness day 2024” Page two reads “TW: The following slides are going to contain conversation surrounding self harm so if you’re not in a safe space to do so, please just skip this post. And remember, even though you may not feel like it, you matter and you don’t deserve to feel the way you do right now, stay safe <3” Page three reads “One of the most common misconceptions about self-harm is that it’s an attempt at suicide. Usually, it’s not. People will then often go to “well it must be for attention”. Firstly it’s a VERY small percentage of people who SH that do it for attention. Secondly I hate to break it to you but if somebody is actively hurting themselves for attention, they need help also...” IMAGE DESCRIPTION CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS! ↓ #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic

Life through my phone from the last month🫶🏻✨ What did I say?! You may not hear from me much end of October - January but mid February I defrost & I did just that!! & I’m so so happy to feel like I have my life back🥰 I’ve made some lovely memories the this month: - We’ve spent time with friends & family🫶🏻 - We went to wales for Valentine’s Day🩷 - We drove to Manchester to see @adelaide_saywell for a little pancake day date, which didn’t quite go to plan😭😂 - We spent a lot of time with our plants this month, inspired by our Valentine’s Day trip to a BEAUTIFUL plant shop in wales, obviously I was then hyperfixated for a hot minute🌱 - I spent A LOT of time working on my social media and finally coming back to posting regularly again, which honest I can’t even tell you how happy it’s made me 🎥 And finally we finished the month yesterday with Adelaide coming down to Liverpool! We had the best day charity shop hunting (spending way too much money lmao), eating yummy food, watching horror films and finishing it with seeing zero🐈‍⬛ I’m honestly so grateful right now & can’t wait for this month!🌻 #ActuallyAutistic #Autism #Autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutismInGirls #Neurodivergent #AutismAdvocate #DisabledBlogger #AutisticInfluencer #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #Neurodiversity #LateDiagnosedAutistic #DiversityAndInclusion #VeganFood #LucyAndYak #PhotoDump
