Growing up with undiagnosed autism was hard. I knew I was different. I never fit in with the others. Things that seemed easy for others were hard for me. Every day was a challenge & I was always unprepared. I struggled to make friends & rarely maintained friendships I did make. I could never grasp social ques or standards. I was irritable, emotional & overwhelmed. I was labeled as a difficult, defiant child. I was told to try harder when I was already trying as hard as I could. I was told to behave when I behaved the only way I knew how. I was constantly being reminded that I was not the same as my peers.ย I was bullied. I came home crying because no one wanted to be my friend. Teachers belittled me, adults scolded me & peers isolated me. So, I belittled myself, I scolded myself, & I isolated myself. I began to believe that I was broken, that I didnโt deserve to be loved, & that I was the problem. I allowed the ghostly version of myself that others created to haunt me for the first 25 years of my life. I became a timid, meek shell of the person I was created to be. After a complete emotional breakdown in my mid-20s, I decided to set myself free of the weight I was carrying. This is when I began to suspect that I was autistic. I allowed myself to heal, gave myself grace, forgave those who hurt me & forgave myself. MY STORY is why autism acceptance is so important. Late diagnosed autistics grow up hating themselves because there is little understanding of autism. We & others are aware that we are different. It is not enough to just be aware of someoneโs differences, we need others to accept that we are different & understand why to create a safer environment for autistic children and adults. I am not blaming those around me for growing up undiagnosed. Just like myself, they were unequipped with the knowledge needed to make me feel accepted. I commend them for loving & encouraging me the best they could. An excellent morning yesterday on Sherman. There was very little wind and clear skies that offered amazing views. With our early start, snowshoes stayed on the pack though we needed spikes above 13k. Was a cool morning but once that sun came up it warmed up real quick and started softening the snow. We got done early enough so the we didn't sink into the snow much. With our start of our last sale for the 2023-24 school year days away, we remind you that a generous portion of the proceeds from our sales go to disability organizations. This time, we will be supporting @autismsocietycentralva -- more specifically, the four teams with which we have a personal connection who will be participating in the organization's annual 5K Fun Run and Family Day (May 18th at Crump Park). When we send in our check to ASCV, we will ask them to divide the donations among the teams: ** Team bELIeve -- Jen Barnum and family, and friends ** I Beg Your Parton -- Rachel Krodel and family, and friends ** Team Honeybadger -- Lauren Kidd and family, and friends and ** The Greene Team -- Jon Greene (who is the Director of Teen and Adult Programs for ASCV) and family, and friends Thanks to the ASCV, we were able to check out River City Inclusive Gym for the first time. The ASCV has always been very helpful with ideas for programming as well as information about and within the autism community. The EncouraJingly team will be at the 5K, but we'll be serving coffee and other refreshments at the Raise, Inc coffee station -- and very happy to support our friends' teams and so many others in the greater Richmond area coming out to support this event. As always, we will also be purchasing a copy of "The Way to Inclusion," by Dr. Julie Causton, to be given to a Hanover County educator before the close of school.
