If you recently visited the CREW Bird Rookery Swamp trail, you may have noticed that it was closed beyond the boardwalk last Thursday and Friday by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). This brief closure was necessary to replace two culverts - one at Ida's Pond and another a little further east along the trail. There are over 14 culverts along the 12-mile BRS tram trail. These structures allow water to pass through the trams, both into and out of the swamp and marshes that lie at the heart of CREW Bird Rookery Swamp. Without them, the tram trails would be at risk of erosion and washouts. Many of these trams were initially installed back in the 1950s when cypress logging operations were active in this part of the Big Cypress Swamp. In fact, the whereabouts of all of the original culverts remains a bit of a mystery because some have collapsed completely or been obscured by debris and vegetation over the last several decades. Nevertheless, our SFWMD colleagues have been replacing known ones over the last couple years to ensure the tram remains in great shape for years to come! It may look a bit unsightly right now; so, please pardon our mess! Irises are in bloom along CREW Bird Rookery Swamp Trails in Naples 🪻 Prairie Iris (Iris savannarum) thrives in wet habitats like marshes, wet prairies, and swamps. This plant blooms from hidden rhizomes beneath the soil—many of the vibrant flowers you see emerge from longstanding root networks, gracing the landscape with their presence just once a year in the spring. Pollinators like bumblebees will visit this flower while birds will feast on the seeds in the summer! 🌱
As the weather gets warmer in SWFL, alligators are becoming more active and visible, especially as we are getting into their mating and nesting season. Alligator courtship begins in early April, and mating occurs in May or June. Females build a mound nest of soil, vegetation, or debris and deposit eggs in late June or early July and hatching starts in late August. During courtship, mating, and nesting season, Alligators are more likely to be territorial and defensive. If you see an alligator: 🐊 Keep a safe distance and respect their space. Stay on the trail! Remember that harassing alligators is illegal in Florida. 🐊 Keep pets on a leash and away from the water’s edge. Pets often resemble alligators’ natural prey. Walking pets at CREW Bird Rookery Swamp is not recommended. 🐊Never feed an alligator. It’s illegal and dangerous. When fed, alligators can lose their natural wariness and instead learn to associate people with the availability of food. 🌼 #WhatsBlooming at CREW Bird Rookery Swamp 🌼 Elliot’s Aster (Symphyotrichum elliottii) 🌸 This perennial wildflower blooms in the late fall in swamps, marshes, and wet flatwoods. These blooms attract many native pollinators such as butterflies and bees🐝 You can’t miss this one as you stroll the boardwalk and trail — it’s everywhere! Moonflower (Ipomoea alba) 🌝 This fragrant night blooming morning glory vine attracts night pollinators like hawk moths. These flowers close in the late morning after the sun is up. The Moonflower’s foliage adds to its charm with its heart-shaped, dark green leaves 💚 Pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata)🪻 Pickerelweed is a good food source for aquatic and terrestrial animals. The large leaves and clusters of stems also provide excellent cover for fish, birds, insects, swimming mammals, amphibians and reptiles. On top of that, the flowers are known to attract butterflies and the seeds are a tasty treat for birds. Ducks will actually consume the entire plant! 🦆 Alligator Flag (Thalia geniculata) 🐊 These detailed purple and pink blooms hang over the sides of the boardwalk, attracting native pollinators like bees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds! This aquatic plant is also the host plant for Brazilian Skipper butterflies 🦋 The common name of this plant comes from the shared habitat they have with Alligators. Alligators often hide among alligator flag stands, and the shaking leaves act as a signal when a gator is moving around.

Well, all of the prep work and nest build is complete. Now starts the waiting game. There's no way to know if momma (left) has laid her eggs. But even so after the chicks hatch to the time they fledge. approximately 18 weeks will have gone by, so there's plenty of time for observation. If you swipe to the second pic, you will get a sense of who is in charge in this household. Never have I had a momma Osprey stare me down like that, with one eye half open, try this on someone and see what happens. And I'm a good 40 meters away! BTW did you know Ospreys mate for life and when one of them passes away the breeding cycle is broken. Yes, the survivor with never mate again. We are grateful to the South Florida Water Management District for a recent grant allowing us to purchase a trail mower to keep all four CREW trail systems in tip-top shape between major contracted mowing operations. This mower, and the surplus UTV they provided to pull it, will help lighten the load on our dedicated, but already overburdened volunteers, allowing them to cover more ground in less time. If happiness is a goal, then adventure should be the priority! I have been craving a trail run at the Bird Rookery for weeks now. My heart just yearned for it! Finally got to make it happen today! The water levels are the lowest I’ve ever seen there and the grass was so high, so I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get to see the wildlife like I’m used to seeing. We still saw a few gators, but the otter at the end absolutely made my day! I have been dying to see them! It was so freaking cute watching it hunt for fish, catching them, and then eating them. We may have had a couple near death experiences….Gator grunting really loud by us in the tall grass and then a couple of hikers told us something big and black was running behind us/chasing us. They thought we had a dog with us. We did not! Very weird and scary! All in all it ended up being a fabulous morning on the trails and it made my heart so happy to be out there. I just love being out in the middle of nature, doing what I love (running), hearing all the sounds, seeing the wildlife, smelling the natural air, and the lil bit of danger that comes with it! On the way back to South Florida we decided to take a break from driving on I95 and stop at Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Lighting was a little tuff but I made it work. It’s World Otter Day 🦦 At CREW and throughout Florida we have River Otters! The River Otter is adapted for both land and water with short legs, webbed toes, and a strong, flattened tail. They can use their powerful tail to propel through the water at 7 mph and they can run as fast as 18 mph on dry land. River otters prefer fresh water and can be found in rivers, creeks, lakes, ponds and swamps. Otters live in burrows, called holts, on the bank of a water body and often under tree roots. Otters are very sensitive to the quality of the water they live in. Pollution is one of the biggest threats to otters, and scientists can use the abundance or lack of otters as cues to the quality of the water body itself. Saturday, when the fun stuff happens! Started the day with my Trail Sisters for 15 miles in the swamp and then moved on to full on party mode! We had a great time at our Spring Birding at CREW program on Saturday🪶🪺 Some of our observations included Roseate Spoonbills, a Northern Waterthrush, Red-shouldered hawk fledglings, a large group of feeding Wood Storks, and a male Pileated Woodpecker in his nest cavity. As we hiked, an abundance of Northern Parulas, White-eyed Vireos, and Northern Cardinals filled the morning air with bird song.
