Rhode Island is the smallest state of the United States but still has some big history to tell, and Blackstone River Valley National Historic Park helps tell it. @blackstonenps @nationalparkservice This is Slater Mill and became a part of the National Park system in 2021. It was originally named a National Historic Registered Site in the 1960s and has actually been preserved and taken care of by the Old Slater Mill Associated in 1921. Slater Mill is considered the "birthplace of the Americsn Industrial Revolution" and is located in Pawtucket RI. I don't have enough time to tell all its history, so here's the cliff notes: Slater Mill was opened in 1793 by Samual Slater with Moses Brown, a man who bought the mill with more small time productions in mind. Slater was from England and worked at cotton mills then, so when he moved to the US, he found Moses and brought up the idea of this new idea (at least new to the US). He brought his knowledge from England (and subsequently named Slater the traitor) and helped create the first ever "large scale" cotton mill. This location made a perfect spot for milling due to its location to the river and its ability to power the waterwheel at the site. Like all of history, it has its sordid side, including its dependence on children for labor. Their nimble hands and fingers working best at the wheels, and of course, using cotton picked by enslaved people. The start of the factory was also the start of labor rights, and in 1824, young women of the factory had the first ever factory strike in the US. The property has had extensions, fires, and restorations, but a lot of it is still the original building that was standing there more than 200 years ago. There will be another post from this site... though it will probably be just birds 😅. It's not the biggest National Historic Park out there, and this post is just a blip of its full history, but it is absolutely worth the visit. Make sure to check their website for visiting days and hours. The inside is currently only available for tours via ranger, and I just happened to be in town the first day they opened tours back up. I do need to go back to visit a second section this

I’m so excited to announce that Plenteous Grace is officially published! This book has been a labor of love, most especially because it is based on the story of my own grandfather, Trygve Lee, and his wife, my grandmother, Valle. The story opens in 1918 and follows their family as they navigate literal and figurative icebergs together on their journey between Norway and America. They struggle with the same struggles as many immigrant families at the time, and those we still do today: sickness, homesickness, finances. But they also share immense joy and laughter and were indeed blessed with Plenteous Grace. I hope you’ll follow along with Trygve and Valle, and with me on my journey as a new published author. In today’s edition of Lesser-Known properties, we introduce you to Cormier Woods Reservation in Uxbridge. Cormier Woods lies within the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, a designated area extending from Worcester to Providence that celebrates the historical and cultural importance of the river and the birthplace of America’s Industrial Revolution. Easy to moderate-intensity trails wind through open meadow and along stone walls, opening up a quintessential 1800s New England agricultural landscape and small-scale farmstead, replete with an historic house, barn, and a blueberry patch that ripens in late summer. Five miles of connected loop trails pass through easy to moderate terrain, including pastures, woodlands, and a boulder field. Pass beneath evergreens and hardwood species including oaks, maple, and birch. Oaks are dominant: you’ll pass several species, each with distinct leaves and acorns, especially as you venture away from the farmstead. It's a very peaceful place to take a short or longer walk and enjoy the beauty of nature in all its simplicity. Tell us, have you visited Cormier Woods Reservation? #TheTrustees #LesserKnownPlaces #ExploreMassachusetts #CormierWoods #UxbridgeMA #Hiking #BeautifulPlaces #Farmland #BlackstoneValley #BlackstoneRiverValley

#blackstonerivervalley #knowltonhats Back in the late 1990’s Ranger Kevin and I would hold oral history events. We would advertise to a community that on a certain night people who wanted to share their memories of the Blizzard of 1978 or the 1955 flood after Hurricane Diane could join us for a free evening of reminiscing. My favorite part of it was that families would come so that the young people could hear and remember how important the event was. As each story was told, the event became more real and a sense of community grew from the storytelling. My favorite version of this is when Kevin and I went to the Knowlton Hat Factory. It is now senior housing and back in the 1990’s some of the former workers at the hat factory were living there. While the retired workers told stories, I helped the children make Panama and Top Hats using file folders. The hats looked the one the woman is holding in this photo, they were very authentic. The hats 🎩 looked great, and the stories we heard were amazing.

2023 is officially a 48 state year, and I beat my previous record by 8 days! Unlike my previous 2 times around the country, this was done in many vehicles. Lol. Dropped off the Subaru in Maine then drove my rental Mazda CX-9 to the Blackstone River Valley NHP in Rhode Island. The Old Slater Mill is considered the “Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution”. Amazing how Mazda can make a midsize 3-row crossover that handles better than the smaller Forester and RAV4. The unveiling of the mural “Great Road in the 19th Century,” located at the Visitor’s Center at Chase Farm, marks the completion in the development of the Great Road Heritage Campus. The artist, Jason Eckhardt, masterfully produced a 10-foot pen and ink mural depicting the Great Road as it would have appeared 200 years ago. After much research, Mr. Eckhardt was able to illustrate a vivid representation of the time with incredible historical accuracy, bringing remembrance and relevance to a time long since past. The intricately detailed mural includes 30 buildings, some standing today and some lost. Every stroke of this artist’s pen brings the whole area to life! The mural was made possible through a Community Grant provided by The Rhode Island Foundation. In addition to the mural, an interpretive sign about the history of the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop has been created. This was the final of the interpretive signage that has been installed at each of the sites within the Great Road Heritage Campus, giving visitors information about the history of the area and of each site. #museum #lincolnri #oldmill #machineshop #museums #greatroadheritagecampus #blackstonerivervalley #museumlover #blackstoneriver #preserveri #blackstonevalley #historicpreservation #chasefarm #chasefarmri #historic #greatroad #blackstonevalleyri #LivingHistory

My friends at @hearthsidehouse shared this story about one of their reenactors who portrayed an inspiring woman from the Revolutionary War Era. And the museum was featured in the Washington Post! Visit their page for the link. Congratulations to Hearthside for this special recognition! 💕 Repost: Estelle Barada, a long-time volunteer of Friends of Hearthside and a knowledgeable reenactor and history enthusiast, recently portrayed one of her favorite historical figures, an 18th century Newport resident by the name of Charity “Duchess” Channing Quamino, during a photoshoot with the esteemed Washington Post at Hearthside House. Duchess Quamino was an enslaved pastry maker and entrepreneur in Rhode Island during the Revolutionary Era. She was born on the Gold Coast of Africa to a minor royal family. In the mid-eighteenth century, she was taken captive and sold into slavery. After being transported to Newport, Rhode Island, she became a domestic slave in the home of prominent attorney William Channing. Quamino was a skilled pastry maker, and she used her skills to earn her freedom. She baked pastries in the Channings' oven and sold them to locals. By 1780, she had secured her freedom and that of her children. She continued to bake pastries and became famous in the community for her baked goods. She also worked as a servant for the Channing family and cared for their youngest child, William Ellery Channing, who would later become a prominent Unitarian clergyman and abolitionist. Estelle has been involved with various historic institutions and has been participating in reenactments for over 40 years. She has volunteered at Hearthside for more than a decade, brightening the room with her warmth, effervescent smile and welcoming all who enter the house museum. Despite a devastating cancer diagnosis three years ago, Estelle continues to live her life to the fullest and contribute the utmost good to the community with otherworldly poise and grace. The side effects of Estelle’s chemotherapy treatment can be difficult, but she says “Life is too short, and the day is not promised to you. That’s why I want to go about my days being helpful and positive to other people.”

The new mural sits next to the visitor center at Chase Farm Park, which is near Pullen's Corner Schoolhouse and the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop at 677 Great Road in Lincoln. The Moffett Mill is a treasured part of the Great Road Heritage Campus and a must-see destination for history enthusiasts. Built in 1812, the mill was among the first in the area to have new metal-working technology including a metal lathe and drill press. The mill's history is intertwined with that of Great Road, which was a major transportation route during the 19th century. Today, the Moffett Mill serves as a valuable reminder of Lincoln's rich history and its connection to the wider region. There are only a few more opportunities left this year to visit the Moffett Mill. Guided tours of all of the Great Road Heritage Campus Sites will be held THIS WEEKEND on Sunday, June 25th as well as later, on July 16th and August 27th, providing visitors with a chance to learn about the mill's history and its significance in the development of the local community. Led by knowledgeable docents dressed in period attire, these tours are a fun way for guests of all ages to step back in time and experience the mill as it would have been in the 19th century while supporting the efforts to preserve these sites for future generations. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the rare opportunity to visit the well-maintained sites along Great Road. Registration for the guided tours of the Moffett Mill, Hearthside House, Pullen’s Corner Schoolhouse, and the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop, on July 16th and August 27th, will be posted on the GreatRoadHeritageCampus.org website. Slater’s Mill in Pawtucket , Rhode Island is generally considered to be the birthplace of the American Indistrial Revolution. Built in 1793 on the banks of the Blackstone River, it was the first large-scale cotton mill in the United States. The first photo shows the mill in the 1860s or 1870s, and and the second photo shows the scene in 2021. Most of the surrounding mills have since been demolished, but Slater Mill has been restored and preserved as part of the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. #slatermill #pawtucket #pawtucketri #rhodeislandhistory #rhodeislandthenandnow #19thcentury #19thcenturyphotography #industrialrevolution #textilemill #blackstoneriver #blackstonerivervalleynationalhistoricalpark #blackstonerivervalley #newenglandhistory #ushistory #samuelslater #oldandnew #thenandnow #rephotography #lostnewengland #oldphoto #oldphotos #oldphotograph #oldphotography #oldphotographs #historicphoto #historicphotography #historicphotos #nationalhistoriclandmark #historicsite #historymuseum

From Blackstone River Valley National Historic Park Today's Friday Flashback captures Slatersville, a mill village in Rhode Island, in 1931. Look for the (old) Town Hall in the background. This building was relatively new at the time of this photograph. You may also see the commercial block, which still stands in Slatersville. This photograph was one of many taken during a project on the "Slatersville Viaduct," Bridge #273, by RI DOT. #northsmithfieldheritageassociation #northsmithfield #northsmithfieldri #newenglandhistory #rhodeislandhistory #historicrhodeisland #historicnewengland #newenglandmills #blackstonerivervalley

Slatersville, RI was the first mill village system in the US. The mill company provided all workers needed (housing, stores, churches, and schools). While entire families worked for the company; fathers usually on the company farm or as mechanics and mothers and children in the mills. The working conditions were often less than ideal in the mills, and sometimes they were paid in company money (illegal today). This ensured the company businesses profited and the company remained in control of the workers. Families would withhold the work of their children when working conditions were poor. With time, this lead to the first textile strike in US history and the first to be led by women. #blackstonerivervalleynationalhistoricalpark #blackstonerivervalley #slatermill #rhodeisland #mills #workersrights #lego #nps

Today is our 36th Birthday! We couldn’t have done it without you. We thank our many partners, volunteers, donors, and friends for getting us here. When BHC was created by Congress in 1986, we were the second national heritage area in the country, and today, there are 55. The National Heritage Areas program is an amazing example of public/private partnerships. From bikeways to paddles to hikes to cleanups. BHC is proud to be the Storyteller, the Guide, and the Champion of the Blackstone River Valley – the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution and home to 25 communities from Worcester, MA, to Providence, RI. BHC is also the primary partner of the @blackstonenps - managing the National Park Service Volunteers-In-Parks program with over 200 volunteers who share their passions, talents, and skills to help fulfill our mission of preserving and promoting the historic, natural, cultural, and recreational resources of the Corridor. And, as we celebrate our 36th year, please consider helping to support our continuing work to make the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor a welcoming and inclusive place to explore, recreate and play, and connect with a donation: https://blackstoneheritagecorridor.org/product-category/donate-blackstone-heritage-corridor/. Fun fact: the 36th Anniversary gift is Bone China, symbolizing Strength and Durability! #BlackstoneValley #BlackstoneRiverValley #NationalHeritageCorridor #nationalheritagearea #nationalheritageareas #nationalheritageareas_nps #nationalheritageareasmatter #volunteersinparks #findyourpark #BlackstoneNPS #blackstoneriver #blackstoneriverbikeway #blackstonerivergreenway #blackstonevalleypaddleclub #johnhchafee

Spent the afternoon at the Slater Mill National Historic Park and the evening at Auntumnfest! This mill was the first successful textile mill in the US and it was built in 1790, the same year as our home! We’ve been watching a docuseries on PBS all about Slatersville, I love learning about the local history.
