The National: High Violet (2010) First UK pressing on purple vinyl
. All the pieces matter Not just essential but the quintessential song from this great beast of a band. The pounding, driving drum beat at the beginning. The swirling, looping guitars. Matt Berninger’s booming, beautiful baritone beaming directly into your ears, head, heart and soul. A slowly evolving lyric delivered as is for the first time. Initially a confusing collection of disparate ideas and images and yet still, somehow, there’s narrative, sense and meaning. Foot of your love? Shirts? Swarms of bees? Ohio? It’s Oh So The National. Second verse in and the self-recrimination begins (big fans will have already linked the leaning on the car here with that against the wall in Slow Show, I am sure). ‘The floors are falling out / From everybody I know’ sends me back to another great Boxer song, Fake Empire. It’s a fascinating thread back to previous work on an album, High Violet, that really set the band apart from all earlier material. A curious connection for sure. Which brings us neatly to the final portion of this song where the band adds horns in way they hadn’t really before - crashing them against the rocks of the Dessner’s striking (literally) guitars and piano. This superbly crafted shipwreck of a closing bleeds into those cascading drums running full speed for the finish. It makes for a thrilling end. Or was this, in fact, a new beginning?
After many years of being away on holidays when The National happened to be touring, I finally got to see them live. Was absolutely worth the wait. Perfect weather for a perfect night out. The National 2024 First Two Pages Of Frankenstein Tour In Australia 📹 “Bloodbuzz Ohio & Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks” Video Clip 1. #bloodbuzzohio 실제 이야기를 가사로 쓴 것 처럼 느껴지는 노래, 오하이오를 이제는 다시 돌아갈 수 없지만 기억을 해주지도 않을 것 이라는 뜻의 심오한 가사와 감정적으로 절제되었지만 깊게 느껴지는 명곡 하나만으로 오하이오를 가보고 싶어질 정도이고 실제로 오하이오 주 사람들은 이 곡을 주를 대표하는 곡으로 얘기하는 사람도 있다고 하니 이들이 한곡 한곡에 대한 독특한 사운드, 감정적으로 깊고 다양한 주제를 선보이는 것에 대한 정성이 리스너들에게 고스란히 느껴질 수 밖에 없는것 같다. (2010년 High Violet 앨범에 수록되어 있음) 아마도 오하이오에서 한 평생을 만난 사람과의 추억이 있다거나 일생을 다해 일을 했던 직장이 있다거나 가족과의 추억, 그 일상 모두를 통들어서 자신들이 속하고 살아왔던 실제 도시의 이름을 따 이렇게까지 처절하고 애절하게 표현한 곡이 과연 어디에 있을까 싶다. 어느 정도는 있겠지만 이 정도의 표현력은 아마 라디오헤드의 #fakeplastictrees 나 #nosurprises 를 맞먹는 수준일지도. 비교는 절대 아니고 그냥 그 자체적으로 유니크함이 비슷하다는 뜻. 벌떼 속에서 오하이오로 실려갔어. 결혼은 하지 않았지만 오하이오는 나를 기억하지 못해. 그 사람들 앞에서 너무 부끄러워. 취해서 돌아가는 길에 운전해. 다른 친구들은 모두 집으로 돌아갈 거야. 다른 친구들, 나는 혼자 있는게 더 나을지도 몰라. 나는 당혹스러워. 나를 오하이오로 실어가. Bloodbuzz, Ohio, oh, oh, oh (Reddit에서 가사 번역) 2. #vanderlylecrybaby 그리고 Vanderlyle 이라는 말의 뜻은 내셔널이 많은 노래에 부여한 이름의 전형적인 것중 하나인데 이 단어의 뜻 자체가 실제로 그것을 설명하기 위해 실제 단어를 사용하려고 할 때마다 당신이 생각하는 것과 다르게 들리는 것이고 어차피 그거 자체를 얘기한다면 Vanderlyle 이라고 얘기하라고 말하는것 같은 느낌이고. 실제로 Vanderlyle의 뜻은 매트 형님이 인터뷰에서 말하길 세계 어디에도 존재하지 않는 3음절 조합이라고 하니 그냥 가사처럼 Vanderlyle Crybaby라고 하는게 이 노래를 이해하는데 그나마 덜 어려울거라고 생각한다. 정확한 뜻은 없는데 단어의 리듬과 억양을 살펴봐서 고유한 3음절을 만들어 본다고 생각하면 없는 단어를 이렇게 찾아내서 만들어 내는 것도 참 대단하다고도 생각. 그리고 맷형님이 얘기하길 #Nirvana 의 #pennyroyaltea 곡에서 pennyroyal의 뜻은 그냥 차 이름이라고 한다. 근데 이 3음절이 너무 소리가 좋아서 사용하고 싶다고 하면 어디에도 쓸 수 있는 단어가 될 수 있다는 건데 이걸 그대로 쓸 수는 없고 자신이 만들어 놓은 3음절을 써야하니 새로운 3음절을 찾을 수 밖에 없었을 것이며 그런데도 불구하고 이 3음절로 된 단어를 책 수백권을 쓸 정도라고 하니. 그만큼 자신들이 음악을 알리는데 있어서 이런 고유함이 드러날 수 밖에 없는것 같다. 집을 떠나, 이름을 바꾸세요. 혼자 사세요. 케이크를 먹으세요. The National 2024 First Two Pages Of Frankenstein Tour In Australia 1st Jul, 2011 Rock Werchter Festival, Belgium 28 Feb, 2024 Riverstage, Brisbane, Australia 더 내셔널!! 2011년에 워히터에서 처음보고 한번도 본 적이 없고 그 동안 제대로 들어보지도 않았던 팀이지만 그 당시에 받았던 임팩트는 아직까지도 기억에 남아있었고 한국 지인들이 내셔널은 언제봐도 좋으니 꼭 보라고 해서 원래 이틀 휴무인데 무리하게 3일을 휴무를 내어 보게되었다. 가장 많이 뜬 곡이 #bloodbuzzohio 인것 처럼 미국 오하이오주 신시내티 출신이다. 장르는 단 한번도 이런 장르를 본적이 없는 인디를 자랑하며 프로그레시브락의 다음 버전인 포스트 펑크를 지향하는데 난 사실 그냥 얼터내티브쪽이 맞다고 생각한다. 너무 세분화되면 사실 그냥 유니크하다고 하는게 맞는 표현. 작년에 봤던 #interpol 이랑 음악성이 상당히 비슷한데 인터폴은 조금 단조로우면서 하나의 장르를 반복하는 반면 내셔널은 앨범을 내면 낼수록 독창적인 앨범이 쏟아져 나왔다 (1,2집은 인터폴이랑 비슷, 3집부터는 살짝 그루브해지고 뭔가 단조로운 분위기에서 변화를 많이 추구해왔다) 음악자체가 일단 무겁고 어두운 분위기라서 실제로 미국 인디씬에서도 정상급이고 전 세계적으로도 충분히 떴는데 아직까지 내 주변(호주)에 내셔널을 아는 지인은 없다. (멜로디 자체가 우울하고 보컬이 단순 중저음 보이스로만 표현을 하는것이 아니라 눈빛, 제스처, 울부짖음, 무대를 휘젓는 여러가지 모션의 퍼포먼스가 너무 특이하고 좀 세상에 알려지기 쉽지 않은 믑티로 말하면 내향적인 “I”같은 음악) 물론 이번 공연에 왔던 관객들은 전부 내셔널 찐팬들. 어디서 숨어있다가 왔는지도 모를 정도로 반응이 엄청나고 마지막 #vanderlylecrybabygeeks (영상참고)를 떼창할 때는 숨죽여 가만히 듣고만 있어도 눈물날 정도로 모든 사람들의 내셔널을 향한 애정과 관심이 느껴져서 너무 감동적이었다. (이 멋진 밴드를 같이 공유할 지인이 주변에 없다는게 개인적으로는 너무 안타깝고 아쉬웠음. 워낙 음악자체가 유니크함) 전매특허는 보컬인 Matt 형님의 마이크들고 관객이 있는 스탠딩존으로 뛰어들어가 무대를 가로지르며 노래부르기. 2011년에 봤을때도 저렇게 뛰어들면서도 차분히 중저음을 유지하며 노래를 계속 부르는 모습이 참 신기했던 기억이 있는데 모든 웹영상에서도 꼭 공연마다 2-3번씩 뛰어들길래 이번에도 당연히 뛰어드나 싶었는데 왠걸. 정확히 4번을 뛰어들었고 심지어 #dayidie 를 부를때는 좌측끝부터 정확히 우측끝까지 무대를 가로질러버렸다. 이 형님 참 대단하다. 무대 장비팀에서 저렇게 긴 마이크선을 준비한 것도 대단. 노래가 끊기지 않고 무아지경상태에 관객들 몰리는 데도 이거 자체로 공연의 묘미중 하나로 만들어 버리니 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 아무튼 정말 공연적으로만 얘기해도 엄청 할 말이 많은데 이걸 공감할 사람이 없다는게 너무 아쉽고 보통은 혼자 공연 보러가서 이런 아쉬움은 느끼지 않는 편인데 내셔널 공연은 아니 이번 공연은 진짜 가슴이 먹먹해지고 눈물날 정도로 감동을 받았다. 표현이 좀 부족한것 같아도 마음이 그만큼을 다 표현하지 못한다는게 맞는 표현. 뭔가 단짠이 아닌 싱거운데 맵다거나 어두운데 그 처절함이나 감정을 차분한 중저음으로 극대화시켜서 더 파급력을 크게 만드는 엄청난 밴드 더 내셔널! 팀 이름처럼 미국의 장엄한 분위기의 국가적인(?) 밴드. 정말이지 이쯤되면 미국이란 참 문화적으로 어떻게 이런 팀 들이 즐비할 수 있는 것인지 너무 대단하기도 하다. 역사도 짧은데 이렇게나 방대한 문화가 탄생할 수 있다는게 그들이 세계 경제 뿐만 아니라 문화적으로도 리드를 할 수 밖에 없다는 것도 새삼 이해가 되면서도 계속 궁금증을 유발하게 된다는. 시대에 저항하는 누메탈도 그렇고. 고전과 풍요를 즐길줄 알고 사랑을 표현함에 있어서 이렇게도 아름답고 품위있게 표현하는 영국을 중심으로 유럽을 말한다면 미국은 그냥 진짜 모든 장르를 통들어서 미국다움이 있다. (아 호주밴드들은 호주 특유의 편안함과 느슨하고 나른해지는 호주다움이 있음!ㅋㅋㅋ 근데 어디까지나 미국 영국 문화를 자극받아서 만들어 진다는게 정설. #tameimpala 는 제외) 암튼 너무 길어서 여기까지. 내셔널 진짜 최고! #thenational

Wassilly Kandinsky - got to visit NSW Art Gallery’s Kandinsky exhibition after surviving the huge rain storm hitting Sydney … so much rain dropping in few hours … getting to see these artworks up close & personal shows me how these famous works are sometimes ‘imperfect’ … the artists often had to work under extremely difficult situations of personal turmoil, political tensions or massive cultural change … sound familiar ? Segundo concierto en 2 días en el WiZink. Ayer, “Blink-182” y hoy “The National”. Apabullante concierto. 🥁🎸. Por la duración, 2 horas y media, y por la implicación y entrega, con un sonido y despliegue de luz contundente, y por la solidez del repertorio creado a lo largo de 20 años y 4 LP’s entre los 500 mejores de la historia, según NME.👏👏👏👏. Difícil definir el estilo de The National, basado en la potente voz de barítono 🎤 de Matt Berninger y los impecables bajos, guitarras y batería 🎸🥁de las dos parejas de hermanos del grupo, respaldados por la excelente sección de vientos 🎺 que acompaña al grupo. Melancolía y Angustia Existencial, estilo indie-post-punk, como si mezclaras a U2, Interpol, The Cure, Joy Division, Nick Cave y Leonard Cohen.
