🏟️Book Review🏟️ 🎧The Last Thing He Told Me Author: Laura Dave Narrator: Rebecca Lowman Genre: Mystery/Thriller Rating: 👌👌 Hannah thought she had found her person, that is until one day when a handwritten note is delivered to her at home that says “Protect her” in her husband's, Owen, handwriting. Now what Hannah once thought was true could all be lies. She works with her step daughter Bailey to attempt to figure everything out and to bring her husband home. Will Hannah and Bailey be able to find Owen and keep him safe or will everything they thought they knew be blown away? I really enjoyed the first half of this book. I loved the build up and all the twists and turns. I loved that there were short chapters and that it was a quick book to listen to. However the ending I felt was rushed and left me wanting more information. I loved the adventure that Hannah and Bailey were on throughout most of the book in an attempt to find Owen. I wanted Hannah and Bailey to have more for their ending. I really enjoyed the characters of Hannah and Bailey. It was a pleasure reading about their developing relationship and how they were basically forced to deal with one another. Hannah I felt was a strong female main character because she did not let much shake her. I loved that she was always putting Bailey first even as her own existence was crumbing around her. Bailey was an interesting character. I liked that she was not all sunshine and daisies but rather a teen dealing with and adjusting to life changes and what they meant for her. Overall I felt that there could have been so much more that happened with this book. I read it for book club and it was pretty much agreed that while we liked the beginning we all felt let down by the abrupt ending. We were all also confused about how the female characters did not appear to have any anger with Owen; they both just accepted that he was gone and moved on. Have you read The Last Thing He Told Me? For December, our book on tap will be The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. ✨D O U B L E 👯‍♀️ R E V I E W✨ The Girls 📖 Historical Fiction 1️⃣ sentence summary: It’s the summer of 1969 in Northern California and teen Evie Boyd falls into the wrong crowd, one whose charismatic leader can talk his followers into anything, including murder. Ashley’s Thoughts: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½ Cue my deep dive into the Manson family history which is what this book was loosely inspired by. 🤦‍♀️ I have a weird brain where I really like learning about AWFUL things so I actually enjoyed the connection to the insane reality that is Charles Manson and his followers. It was interesting to see Evie’s perspective of the other cult followers, mainly the girls and her obsession with Suzanne. But I also wasn’t surprised by her desire and curiosity since her home-life could be pretty crappy at times. While I couldn’t stop reading it, I also felt like there were bits and pieces missing. Maybe because I have no connection to this type of reality or maybe because I just can’t fathom being part of a cult…but either way, I would still recommend if you like dark stories that connect to American history. Amber’s Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½ This is supposed to be a fictional version of the Manson Family Murders, and as a true crime girlie, I was pumped to read this book. The good: the writing is amazing, the characters are complex, and it was fun to read about that time period, especially when it came to what being a “girl” meant back then. The not so great: I felt like the lead up to the murder got me really excited and then it just fizzled. And I feel like Manson’s character wasn’t really talked about all that much. Maybe that’s why it’s called “The Girls” 😂🫢.
