I’m just having a sappy moment because I’m feeling so grateful for the people I have in my life these days 🩷 I come into work and my sweet coworker hands me a bag with this book in it and tells me it’s an “early birthday gift”… I was super grateful and I know she absolutely loved this book, so I thought she was just buying me a copy because she knows I’m an avid reader. I go to open the book and sure enough, she had @xochitltheg sign the book for me!! With my name and all!! I’m just overwhelmed with gratitude right now. I cannot wait to read this, and the cover truly is a work of art 😌 #bookstagram #booksigning #authorsignature #signedbooks #reesesbookclub #booktok #hardcoverbooks #hardcover #bookworm

✨ Book Review ✨ Title: First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston Rating 5/5 Format: Audiobook/Paperback Pages: 348 Blurb: Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job will be different. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes--especially after what happened last time. Because the one thing she’s worked her entire life to keep clean, the one identity she could always go back to—her real identity—just walked right into this town. Evie Porter must stay one step ahead of her past while making sure there’s still a future in front of her. The stakes couldn't be higher--but then, Evie has always liked a challenge... Review: First Lie Wins is by author Ashley Elston and I understand why Reese Witherspoon chose it as her January book club pick! This was absolutely good! Fast paced, clever, twisty, addicting, and definitely one of the top best thrillers I have had! The main characters was very unique with her tough as nails attitude, being a con-artist and completes jobs for "Mr. Smith". Evie Porter is sent on a job to target, Ryan Sumner, who she starts a relationship with and moved in with him. However, Evie Porter isn't her real name, and when a mysterious person shows up who seems to know about her past, Evie starts to find herself in a game of cat and mouse with her boss, Mr. Smith. Be prepared for this wild and entertaining mind game of a ride. It was enjoyable and clever! The hype is well deserved - the story, characters, and the ending were a great read! #bookstagram #books #bookworm #bookstagrammer #booklover #bookish #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookblogger #bookblogging #bookrecommendations #booktok #reading #igreads #instabooks #booksbooksbooks #book #audiobook #firstliewins #ashleyelstonauthor #reesesbookclub

How To End a Love Story Review 💘 You may have heard that debut author @yulin.kuang is the screenwriter and director of two of Emily Henry’s film adaptations; however, the discussion around her shouldn’t end there. Her debut novel, How to End a Love Story, is a beautifully written story about navigating family dynamics, tortured drama, overcoming grief, and experiencing life. It truly stands on its own within the romance genre. I don’t tab books and yet I tabbed this one. There were so many relatable scenes, quotes, and conversations. I also loved getting some background of the writing and screenwriting process, it was very interesting seeing how the authors own professional background was woven into the book. This book does deal with heavy hitting topics (suicide, grief, and death), I would recommend looking at trigger warnings before you read! Have you read this one? If not, are you planning to read this book? 🌷

I’m learning tons in my new role at work and need lots of brain space for that! We all have ups and downs with reading, and I’m honestly amazed I even managed 5 books. 💙 THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED 💙 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ By @lisajewelluk Crossing another off the “2024 Hopefuls” list and MAN was it a good one! SYNOPSIS — Kim never wanted a third child, but when her 19 year old daughter, Tallulah, goes out for a date and never returns, she’s suddenly left to care for Tallulah’s baby, Noah. Over a year later, Kim still has no answers when mystery writer Sophie moves in to the neighborhood. Sophie’s boyfriend has just become the head teacher at a local school, and she’s hoping the time in the country will allow her to work on her next book. That is, until she finds a mysterious sign in their yard saying “Dig Here,” and she does... uncovering pieces of a cold case she didn’t even know she was looking to solve. ⭐️ WOW. Lisa Jewell has done it again (as always)! After being deeply enthralled by NONE OF THIS IS TRUE, I had to get my hands on more Lisa Jewell and I’m so glad I did. Everything I’ve read by her has been fantastic, and this was no exception. With multiple points of view and timelines, we’re given just enough insight to draw some conclusions, without ever really knowing the truth. There were five “parts” of this book, and I loved the way these were broken up. I think I suspected every single character at various points and I was so surprised by the way everything turned out. This story had so much nuance and so many wild characters — I truly never know what to expect. Lisa Jewell does a fantastic job of creating atmosphere in this little English village. Somehow everything came full circle; she truly thought of everything! You’ll be utterly shocked by the way things play out and the multitude of twists and turns along the way. Absolutely loved this one! Can’t wait to read more Lisa Jewell, past and future! ❔Have you read any author’s backlist recently?

(AD/PR Product) Redwood Court ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 4.5/5 This book takes you on a captivating journey to the 1990s, immersing you in the vibrant black community of a small town in South Carolina. We follow Mika and her extraordinary family as they navigate the rollercoaster of life, filled with both joy and pain. Their compelling story unfolds through a collection of beautifully crafted narratives, embracing you with a stunning prose and an undeniable sense of family. This story effortlessly weaves together the past and present, as the characters hold onto hope and triumphs while confronting the harsh realities of racism together. I was particularly drawn to Mika's journey and her quest to find her place within her family as the youngest member. This powerful narrative explores the changing society and offers multiple perspectives that will leave you reflecting long after you've turned the last page. Dameron's writing style and language are simply breathtaking. The way she depicts this multi-generational family is truly remarkable, immersing you in their world with every word. If you're a fan of stories that touch your heart and leave a lasting impression, I highly recommend diving into Redwood Court. It's an enriching experience. Happy Pub Day to my current read! 🥳📖💜✨ Thank you @mbc_books and @amazonpublishing for the free book.⁣ ⁣ Happy Wednesday, y’all!⁣ ⁣ I’m excited to be part of the Bookstagram Tour for THE LETTERS WE KEEP by Nisha Sharma ( @nishawrites ). Today is its pub day and for my fellow kindle unlimited subscribers, it is available for you to read AND listen to for free! ⁣ ⁣ I am about a quarter of the way through this new adult romance set on a college campus where our polar opposite FMC, freshman Jessie and MMC, senior Ravi are about to embark on a dare to determine who gets to use their preferred study room in the library for the rest of the year. ⁣ ⁣ Jessie is a scholarship student with a chip on her shoulder that is admittedly annoying at times. Ravi is the son of a tech billionaire who wants to forge his own path. ⁣ ⁣ Will these budding enemies turn into lovers while trying to solve a decades old mystery concerning two star-crossed lovers? I certainly hope so and can’t wait to find out! ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 💬 Where was your favorite place to study during college? OR Did you ever wear pajamas to class? OR What are your favorite romance tropes? ⁣ ⁣ 💁🏻‍♀️ I’ll go first: I liked studying in our gorgeous university library at one of the large tables near a wall of windows. I NEVER wore pajamas to class, but there were usually some classmates who did. 😂 My favorite romance tropes are enemies-to-lovers and second chance romance. ⁣ ⁣ Wishing you all a lovely evening.⁣ ⁣ xoxo,⁣ Mel⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #TheLettersWeKeep #RomanceReader #WhatToReadWednesday #CurrentlyReading #DiverseSpines ⁣ ⁣

The Lying Game by Ruth Ware ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Isa Wilde is a new mum and a lawyer (on maternity leave) when she gets a text from her friend Kate saying just three words: I need you. Isa drops everything to return to where The Lying Game began: Salten House. As lies begin to unravel, the truth is about to be revealed of what really happened that night almost two decades ago with Isa and her three best friends. This was a good thriller/mystery. I liked the story being laid out with present-day and flashback telling. I felt that Isa’s journey as a new mum was also very relatable. The twist at the end was awesome. I thought I had it figured out but twist! I did not! #reesesbookclub #reesesbookclubxhellosunshine #rwbookclub #thelyinggame #ruthware #bookreview #bookstagram

How to End a Love Story ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ By Yulin Kuang “I hope this is a kind of story where there is an epilogue. One day I’ll turn the last page and suddenly, there you’ll be.” Helen and Grant went to high school together. They know each other due to a tragic accident that catapulted both of their lives into grief. Thirteen years later, Helen is the famous author of a popular YA book series. Her dreams come true when she relocates to LA, because her book secures a tv series adaptation. However, Helen receives the shock of a lifetime on day one when she discovers Grant is one of the lead writers on set. Reese’s May Pick was a heavy and emotional romance centered around grief and cultural and family expectations. Yulin wrote a heartwarming and heartbreaking novel perfect for Asian American Heritage Month. I loved Helen and her parents. Their relationship was complicated, but they loved each other. ✨ Genre: Romance 🤍 Steamy rating: Spicy-ish 🤬 Profanity: Moderate 🎧 Method: Audiobook 📚 2024 book count: 59 Triggers: Suicide, death of a sibling, and anxiety #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookpost #bookblog #bookblogger #bookstagrammer #bookcommunity #bookshelf #bookclub #booklover #booknerd #bookworm #books #reading #audiobook #audiobooks #goodreads #bookaesthetic #bookaddict #bookengagement #howtoendalovestory #yulinkuang #reesesbookclub #fiction #romance #asianamericanhistorymonth

My first book for May was LA Weather by @mariaescandon and I absolutely loved it. I am a sucker for a good messy multigenerational family drama drama and this book served it up on a platter. Following the Alvarados, a Mexican-American family in Los Angeles the book opens on the patriarch of the family who is obsessed with the weather and drought while also keeping a secret that’s destroying his marriage and the family. After his obliviousness to anything that isn’t the weather channel results in a horrible accident his wife decided to leave him, but when they break the news to their adult daughters they balk at the idea and pressure them into taking a year to try to mend their marriage. The book takes place over the clause of that year and follows all the members of the family as their messy lives unspool simultaneously. The book is full of alot of melodrama and humor and was such a delight, I was sad when it ended, I feel like I could follow along with their lives forever and not get bored. . .. . . .. . ... . . . . . . . . . . #gay #book #books #bookclub #booktok #reading #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #read #bookclub #booktok #fiction #bookrecommendation #librarybook #bookstagram #romancebooks #bookstagram #gaybookstagram #gaybookstagrammer #libby #LAWeather #mariaamparoescandón #reesesbookclub #audiobook #fiction

April reads 📖💗 swipe for a surprise Bean appearance 😆 1. The Wife Upstairs was good but I really loved Rachel Hawkins other books a bit more. 2. Expiration Dates: In the beginning I thought the plot seemed predictable but I was surprised (& wrong!) to find there were a few big turns that I was not expecting. 3. None of this is True: a bit eerie haha but flew through this one! What’s on your May reading list? 📖

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett 3/5 🌟 This is a slow thoughtful book about Lara’s recounting of her acting career from her youth to her adult daughters. She ultimately lives on a cherry tree farm in Tom Lake Michigan which is a ways from the drama of plays and movies. She recounts her relationship with Duke a big celebrity and Emily actually thought for a while he was her biological father. Her three adult daughters are very opinionated in different ways and I liked how each has a distinct personality while listening. The story is excellent and robust with details just a tad linear for me.

Really lacked creativity with this post but finished this book. A nice read about a couple about to get married who both have doubts about whether they should go through with it or not. The book keeps you on your toes as Luke continues to lie to Celine again and again, leaving you wondering what he’s actually up to. I was slightly disappointed with the ending as I wanted something a bit more dramatic! But overall a nice easy read to get me back into reading after a stagnant period. I’d rate it a 7/10.

this months’s book club pick was a bit of a bust for me. tana french’s newest book, the hunter, is billed as a mystery/thriller set in the small, insular town of ardnakelty in the irish countryside during a blistering summer heatwave. it follows the story of cal hooper, a retired chicago police detective, and trey reddy, a local teenage girl whose absent father blows back into town with a mysterious business partner from london. trey’s father’s return, and dubious business plot, threaten to upend trey’s life as she knows it, as well as the lives of their fellow townspeople. both cal and trey find their own ways of attempting to thwart johnny reddy’s chaos and hopefully usher him back out of town, but a mysterious murder and subsequent investigation upends everyone’s plans. honestly i found this book incredibly slow and difficult to get into. i truly never felt invested in the plot or mystery of it all and simply didn’t find it suspenseful. this book IS technically a sequel to french’s book the searcher, which takes place two years prior and tells the story of cal’s move to ardnakelty from the united states and the beginnings of his father-like bond with trey. i think perhaps if i’d read the searcher first, i would’ve gotten more out of this and felt more engaged with the characters and storylines. alas i didn’t read the searcher first, and this was very lack luster for me…. bonus points for a cute dog named banjo though!! alas still only 3 stars :(

To summarize this morning: it feels like a Monday, it's snowing, and I want to be in Vancouver! Oh, and I desperately need to read a cowboy romance. Goal check-in (percentage read in April): Library: 5% Kindle: 24% Pre-Owned: 52% New: 19% I gained 28 additional physical books and read 5 this month (18%) Misc: ● 1 buddy read (@books.glorious.books) ● 2 without audio ● 2 re-reads May goals: 1. Read A Little Life 2. Read 5 pre-2024 NetGalley books 3. Read five gifted physical books (Books photographed were bought in April!) What will be your first book in May?

First Lie Wins - Ashley Elston ★★★☆☆ After reading the blurb, I had lots of questions and really wanted to get into the story. The good thing is that most – if not all – of my questions were answered. But I did have one major issue with the book. From what I’ve read before I actually started with the book, it seemed as if Ryan was going to play a much bigger role and I was expecting him to become the antagonist any minute. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but that didn’t happen, so don’t get your hopes up. To be fair though, the book was enjoyable even though I only got into it two-thirds of the way through (which may have been because I found the book to be over the top and clichéd). Anyway, the book was not a thriller in my opinion, but it was an easy read and I can recommend it to anyone looking for a light evening read. #reesesbookclub #reesesbookclubpick #thriller #book #bookreview #booklover

ᴛᴏᴍ ʟᴀᴋᴇ ʙʏ ᴀɴɴ ᴘᴀᴛᴄʜᴇᴛᴛ What a fantastic audiobook 👏🏼🎧 I wanted to listen to this on audio because Meryl Streep was narrating and I could listen to her all day 😂 I’m happy I did choose this on audio because it’s basically the mom recounting her life story to her daughters so not a lot happens in it. Meryl did a great job bringing the story to life though 👏🏼 Overall it’s an easy going, family oriented, peaceful read. I definitely recommend doing the audio 💯 ❓Have you read any of Reese’s Book Club picks?

Too much fun and a lot of laughs at @ashleyelston’s signing at @pagepalette! Her thriller, FIRST LIE WINS, is a @reesesbookclub pick, a fast-paced, twisty ride that kept me guessing, and a fun, fresh offering in the thriller space. I listened to the audiobook (amazing work, @saskiaaudio!) and am so excited to add a physical copy to my shelves. If you haven’t read this one yet, do so! Thanks for coming, Ashley, and to my local indie, Page & Palette, for a wonderful event! 📚

Happy first day of May! I’ve wanted to read 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩 by BA Paris for what seems like ages. I’m at the 57% mark and definitely curios to find out where it all leads to. May Book of The Month Picks! 💛🌲 I love @bookofthemonth so much (not sponsored, but I wish)! I've been a member since 2021 and have loved every minute of it. My book collection has grown tremendously, and it's all thanks to BOTM. This month, I chose a scifi/romance novel and a thriller/mystery. I can't wait to begin! Do you have a BOTM subscription? If so, what are your May picks?

I have just a few books from the @reesesbookclub and I recommend them all! Little Fires Everywhere with Reese Witherspoon has been made into a mini series. Totally binge worthy! The Last Thing He Told Me with Jennifer Garner has been made into a movie! A Cuban Girl's Guide To Tea and Tomorrow is currently being made into a movie. Can't wait for that one! #reesesbookclub #bookstagram #bookrecommendations

No queer girl is ever going to have a chance at winning prom queen in Campbell. The race is hard enough for me as it is without adding the fact that I'm queer to the mix. ~Liz Lighty ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #Review NotAReview 🌈This book is a short, sweet & simple read with elements of humour, queer romance & eternal friendships. 🙎🏾‍♀️Liz Lighty, a black, smart girl - the protagonist of the story, feels she is a misfit in her small, rich, prom-obsessed town. But, all that's ok because she has a plan to help her get out of Campbell forever - becoming a part of Pennington Orchestra. But her plans fall short because of a rejection email she receives for her partial-tuition scholarship programme - which was her ticket to Pennington. But she has some great people with her who know how to still make this possible for her - by convincing her to take part in the Campbell County prom. While on her prom journey, she meets a girl called Mack who is shown as her love interest. What does she have to go through to run for prom despite not having come from a legacy family? How Liz and Mack's romantic journey unfolds? You'll get answers to these questions once you read the book. 🤌 Elements I loved in the 📚: • The way her coming out of queer personality is taken by her grandparents - who are two generations apart from her. • All her roles - as a friend, a sister, a daughter, a granddaughter, a girlfriend - given equal importance in the book. • The way her childhood bestfriend Jordan and she work through their past to mend their relationship 💭 General thoughts: • I found the narration and pace of the book to be engaging. • The bestfriend-ish & romantic jealousy & fights have been captured well throughout the book. • It's not merely a mention of Liz's love for music in the book. The author has made sure we get to see her musical-humour adorning her conversations in multiple instances. 📚 part of @reesesbookclub 📚This book is for you if you: • are looking for a light read • want to explore the genre of queer romance • want to know the "Lighty Way" of doing things ✒ Quote I liked from the 📚: "A first is nothing without a good second."

Jensen (A FATE INKED IN BLOOD), Steve Kavanaugh (KILL FOR ME, KILL FOR YOU), Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (CHAIN-GANG ALL-STARS), Yulin Kuang (HOW TO END A LOVE STORY), Sophie Wan (WOMEN OF GOOD FORTUNE) 💭𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: - Reading the Magnolia Parks series have been nice palette cleansers in between more heavy hitting books like CHAIN-GANG ALL-STARS. Daisy and Magnolia somehow kept me seated for their series and I am in it for the long haul. - If I could turn back time and read THE PARADISE PROBLEM for the first time I’d do it in a heartbeat. I need more rom coms that have me devouring the pages more often! - While reading a few thrillers by authors I’m well acquainted with, I was excited to find a new to me thriller author in Shane Cavanaugh. KILL FOR ME, KILL FOR YOU was my favorite thriller of this bunch! - I did have a few bummers these past two months, but it hasn’t deterred me from trying future books by the same author! 3/5⭐ #bookstagramromania #romanianbooks #books2024 #cititoripasionati #cititoridinromania #bookgramer #booksofinstragram #cecitim #cartidecitit #romanianreaders #cititulecool #readersfromromania #cartestagram #cititulnuingrasa #citesteocarte #haisacitim #decitit #eucitesc #maratonanual #ninadegramont #misteriosulcazchristie #thechristieaffair #reesesbookclub #edituralitera

I am a romance girly through and through. I’ll admit it. I love a good thriller here and there, but it’s the romance that speaks to me. I had never read anything by @tessabaileyisanauthor before It Happened One Summer. I finished it just moments ago and I cannot wait to dive into Hannah’s story. These sisters stole my heart. Brendan is so dreamy. Westport sounds like the most magical little town. I absolutely loved everything about this book. Review: Counterfeit ✨: 3.5/5 Genre: contemporary, women’s lit 1️⃣ emoji: 👜 Format: Libby audiobook Ava Wong is a strait-laced Chinese American lawyer struggling with her new role as stay at home mom, with her career set on the back burner while her husband becomes a rising star surgeon. Winnie, her Chinese study-abroad friend from college comes back into her life, and turns out she runs a counterfeit luxury purse import business. This is the story about how Ava falls down the rabbit hole from doing a few favors for Winnie to co-running a successful criminal business. ➕: the slyness of this enterprise, and how they get away with what they do, is pretty entertaining. Good smart af girl boss vibes. Overall was a good and easy read. I also liked the twist at the end— did not see it coming ➖: She’s “staying at home to raise her child” while she has a FULL TIME NANNY. So much of the first part of the book is her feeling bad or her husband guilt tripping her for going out and doing purse business stuff…because her son is at home being taken care of by the nanny that they employ to do just that? April Wrap Up! Let’s talk about it: ✨The Housemaid: most times I feel like I have an imbalance brain and I can spot crazy where crazy is, but no this book took me for a ride. I’ve already started reading the Housemaids Secret. ✨ Never Lie: WOW! JUST WOW! wtffff. ✨ The Perfect Day to Boss Up: There were so many parts in this book where I chuckled and just giggled because Rick Ross is foolish but this but really sparked my hustler spirit. Great book to keep you encouraged. ✨ You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty: There was so just many things in this book that just gave me the ICK and because of all of the ickies I just didn’t like the book. I’m so sorry. ✨ The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: I really just wanna talk about the ending when Monique finds out what she finds out. What would you do? Do you tell your mom, do you not? tom lake by ann patchett ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rant without spoilers below! this is the third book i’ve read from reese’s book club and miss girl does. not. miss. i originally picked this as my fourth read of the year because meryl streep is the voice for the audio book (i like to read a book first before listening to it so i am absolutely PUMPED to listen to the queen herself voice lara). i loved this storyline so much. i’m such a sucker for stories within a story and ann patchett really did THAT. in short, the plot follows lara, an ex-actress living in michigan, telling her daughters about her life as an actress. this story follows both the past and present honing in on her first love at tom lake. ann patchett’s connections were so subtle but flowed perfectly. it really made me invested in characters without reading their inner dialogue. the characters were so well defined and i loved every single one of them. with their contributions and ann’s descriptive writing, every piece fit together beautifully in the end. at first, i was really worried i would forever hate lara for abandoning her past. i could never be more wrong; i felt so satisfied with her ending and surprisingly seen. overall, i highly recommend this to anyone who loves character building and more importantly, anyone feeling lost in their 20s. xoxo, maddie 💌 #bookstagram #booktok #reesesbookclub #tomlake

⭐️REVIEW⭐️ FIRST LIE WINS by Ashley Easton For some reason I’m on a bit of a thriller roll and omgosh did this one hit the spot. I listened to the audio which is narrated by Saskia Maarlevald, one of my favourite ever narrators, and she is PERFECT. I was absolutely and thoroughly hooked on this story and could not put it down. I seriously spent the whole book with my mouth hanging open 😲 because the second I thought I knew what was going on, the author switched it all up on me and I was back at square one. I loved how the main character was such a badass woman and the whole thing just felt so clever. And the ending! Loved it! It was different and original and wicked and crafty and I loved it SO MUCH. Huge recommend from me! And def listen to the audio! 🎯 Have you read this one? What did you think? #firstliewins #katiereadsthings

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - If you’re in the market for a smart, beach-bag thriller, this could be for you! I was very late to the game with this one but am so glad I finally read it! Its sequel is set to come out this summer and I can’t wait to read it. Amber is a thirty-something New Yorker with a huge chip on her shoulder. She is set on getting the life she “deserves”, one of wealth, privilege and power… and she’ll get it by whatever means necessary. She sets her sights on Daphne Parrish, the wife of handsome and powerful Jackson. She devises a plan to befriend Daphne and weasel her way into her life and social circle, eventually hoping to woo Jackson and take her place as the rightful Mrs. Parrish. But Amber could have never imagined the repercussions of the plan she has just set in motion… I really did love this thriller - however, if you’ve read Frieda McFadden’s “The Housemaid”, it’s literally the exact same plot twist. As I was reading “Parrish”, about halfway through, I began wondering if it’d be the same twist and sure enough it was. If you’ve never read “Housemaid”, and even if you have, I think you’d still enjoy this one but I can’t believe there’s not more coverage of a plot being totally ripped off (by McFadden, as it was published later 😣). #thelastmrsparrish #reesesbookclub #thriller #domesticthriller #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookworm #booklover

⭐ Pub Week Review ⭐ How to End a Love Story By: Yulin Kuang Pub Date: April 9 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 Thank you to @avonbooks for the gifted copy! All opinions are my own. I was excited to read Yulin Kuang’s debut novel after seeing that she will be writing the screen adaptation for one of Emily Henry’s novels and directing for another, and I found her writing to have the same heart and depth I find in one of Henry’s books. Helen Zhang is a novelist who will be working in the writer’s room on her first TV adaptation. When she meets the other writers in the room, she is shocked to find Grant Shepard in the group. Helen and Grant have a deep, painful history binding them together. She is initially determined to dislike Grant, but the pair slowly build a bond over the course of their time in the writer’s room. Kuang doesn’t shy away from deep topics. Grief, anxiety, depression, suicide, complex family dynamics, parental expectations and disappointments…they are all here, and written in a heartfelt and beautiful way. The characters feel relatable and like real people, with all their messy and sometimes conflicting emotions, their decisions good and bad, and their fears about their futures. The secondary characters are great at adding a touch of levity to the darker moments of the book. The romance here is a slow burn, but once it ignites it gets spicy pretty fast and pretty often! Multiple open door scenes show the burning chemistry between our love interests. With dual POVs (so perfect for a romance!), we are able to understand both character's emotions and concerns. Helen frustrated me several times as their relationship slowly built, but her choices did make sense in light of her background and felt authentic to the character. This one is a BOTM pick this month and would be a great addition to your box! QOTD: Have you read any fantastic debuts recently?
