Hazel moves to Black Harbor, a creepy and dark small town riddled with crime and secrets. She becomes a transcriber for the local police station and an investigation starts after an overdose victim is left in a dumpster. The death is linked to Candy Man, a notorious drug dealer. More deaths happen and Hazel tries to solve the mystery with a veteran police officer whom she has grown very close to. This book is very atmospheric and I'd recommend for anyone looking to read something with mystery, romance, and characters with real flaws. I just picked up her second book in the Black Harbor series, The Widowmaker and will be reading soon! Wwhen you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?” - Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes and Henry James (yes, the writer!) in one story written by Dan Simmons of The Terror and Abominable fame. So this is my fifth book now I’ve read by him and although it is an interesting idea and story it fell a bit flat. Holmes and James travel to the U.S. to solve the murder of Henry Adams’ wife, Clover Adams. Mystery and intrigue follow as we try to piece the story together. The idea for the book was awesome. The execution slipped a bit though as some of the plot slips away (at one point we are trying to determine if Sherlock Holmes is real or not but we just have to assume he is). Might be a book for fans of American history and Holmes as there was some clever links to historical characters in this one. We are left with somewhat of a mystery though and wondering whether there will eventually be a follow up book? Swipe to see me in my Hoppy Place > Spent the weekend in Iowa City & got to try @reunionbrewery at their Coralville Taproom. I caught a flight of 4 beers: a hazy pale ale, two IPAs, & my first gose! The best part was being able to make my notes on my @amazonkindle Scribe! I’ve loved it for the size so far, but also the note taking feature. What a great way to combine some of my favorites: brews and Kindle! The brew details are below 👇🏻 Pounder Hazy Pale Ale: 5% ABV 30 IBU An absolute assault (in the best way) on the taste buds. This beer means business if you’re looking for a flavorful beer, this one is it. It went down smooth and is not heavy. With 5% you’re not going to be toasted after one. The Tank Punched IPA: 7.5% ABV 50 IBU Mosaic + Eukanot hops set the stage of the first tastes that hit your taste buds. I am biased to mosaic hops, they’re some of my favorite. They’re the first you taste and the finish on this was very nice. It was my favorite brew I tried this evening. Ocean Sprayed Cranberry Gose: 5% 25 IBU I’d never had a Gose and hadn’t heard of one either. It’s a top fermented beer heavy on the malted wheat and is flavored with coriander and salt. This one absolutely tasted like like an adult fruit punch. You’re mainly going to taste the cranberry taste with a hoppiness to round it out. This reminded me of a seltzer + wine rather than a beer. There was absolutely no bitterness! DHH Dr. Dank IPA: 7% ABV 50 IBU This beer has both citra and mosaic hops. These are super common in IPAs. The taste was not unique to those IPAs I’ve had in the past, BUT I really enjoyed this one. This was also a fave of the night.

We are two weeks out from Books & Brews, and we have our last three incredible vendors to announce! 🕊️ Books Beyond Bars is a local collective involved in prison justice and abolition work. BBB serves as a books-to-prisoner initiative program, working to provide direct access to books, literature and education to women in the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility. PWYC entry fees from the event will be donated to their cause. 🍻 Good Robot is an incredible craft beer brewery in the heart of Halifax. They are a beverage staple in the North End, and a hub for inclusive and diverse community events. I am very grateful that they continue to let me use their space for bookish events 💓 The bar in the Mousetrap will be open during the market for you to grab a pint and look around! 📚 The King’s Co-op Bookstore is Halifax’s best hidden gem. Tucked into the University of King’s College campus this bookstore is a reader’s dream. The shop has a wonderfully curated selection of books to choose from, and I promise if you stop by you won’t leave empty handed (I never do). They also offer a discount on the Pages & Pints book club pick each month. Finished Simpatía yesterday while hanging out with sweet Leia! This book was a relatively quick little read for me but I felt like it was very dense and rife with symbolism, discussion of religion, politics and political upheaval, multigenerational loss of connection and loneliness, and love. I would be lying if I told you I understood all the layers I think this book has to offer. I felt several times that I was missing key information or context. I did get hung up on several clear connections to Greek mythology (the main character is Ulises and the home which is being converted into the dog shelter is Los Argonautas or The Argonauts.) I wasn’t sure why the connection was being made however the main character references a work by Borges that talks about Ulysses and his dog Algo so that may be what I’m missing. There are multiple levels of writing and translation within this book. Nadine has found Senora Altagracia’s translations of Elizabeth Van Armin’s works and her footnotes end up making Altagracia’s own memoir which Nadine is trying to pull together. Ulises writes a short story and within the novel they are piecing together multiple narratives to understand what is happening both in the attempt to get Simpatía de los Perros open as well as the story of the dissolution of General Martín Ayala’s family, and even the political turmoil in Venezuela. For me, these were the most intriguing parts of the novel and I think at some point I’d want to do a reread of it. Also there are a couple reflections on writing craft that are just so good. Overall I enjoyed it but also wish I wasn’t working so hard to make sense of it too. I love smart writing and referential work but if you are tasking your reader with too much you can lose them or risk your meaning never being made. I paired this with @tonewoodbrewing Fuego Modern IPA from all the way in New Jersey. It felt serendipitous to be reading a work by a Latin American author in translation about dogs while dogsitting and the beer in the fridge matching the language 😂 Also it was delicious so big thanks to Leia’s human for moving from the East Coast and bringing East Coast beer for me to sample 😋
