Earth day is a reminder of how precious the Earth is (both the planet and earth as in the soil.) I do as much as I can to help look after the Earth. Bouquets are delivered in recyclable or compostable packaging. As a member of @flowersfromthefarm I grow my own #BritishFlowers and both supply them to florists and customers and also use them in my own arrangements to try and keep matters #grownnotflown where possible. For deliveries where possible I use a local bicycle delivery service. I compost any leftover arrangements, or make sustainable confetti from them. Hellebores are really in their element right now! Mine are looking a bit nibbled in places this year.... but still beautiful! We'll be collecting seed again in the summer around June time, which is a bit tricky as the pods tend to pop literally over night so it's hard to cach them.they are inspect led twice daily for a few weeks to collect the seeds. It's also worth noting that they don't come true so you won't know what will get for a few years until they flower. We're into March, Yay! Let the game of seedling Tetris begin........... I use heat mats and propagation covers to grow most of my seeds, it speeds up germination by keeping seeds warm and moist. It's a total game changer and allows me to get seedlings germinated and into the coldframe and greenhouse in quick succession. It's risky as sometimes there's just not enough light getting to the plants, they are more susceptible to damping off. Jobs for this month...... more seed sowing! I'll be sowing successions of larkspur, orlaya, cornflower, scabious and phacelia.....I'll wait so sow the half hardy annuals like cosmos and zinnias though as its still a bit too chilly for those! I don't know about you but the pigeons, voles and greenfly all seem to be coming to my plant cafe right now!!! And I caught bambi at my roses again last week! Aphids have a special place in my heart though. Pictured is an aphid farm, set up by ants to provide sweet sticky honeydew for them to eat and in return the ants protect the aphids from predators such as ladybirds. Such an amazing relationship..... There's so much to choose from out there and it can be overwhelming, especially if you are new to gardening or growing your own cut flowers. U P D A T E Hope you’ve all had a beautiful weekend! Just a little update. All emails have been responded too so like always please check your junk box and if you haven’t heard from me do give me a nudge. I’ve spent the afternoon making a plan of all the seeds I’m going to sow and when I’m going to sow them. I took Cel from @forevergreenflowerco business masterclass last month and as part of the course she very kindly shared with us all a plethora of ace spreadsheets. Now my dyslexic brain finds spreadsheets very daunting however I absolutely love having a plan and take great pleasure in being organised. I’m one of those people who has a daily jobs list in notes on my phone and love it when I end the day with it all ticked off (I know very sad). I also really wanted to start the flower farming side of my business right from the beginning so with all that being said I’ve spent the day wrestling with a spreadsheet, all the while telling myself that this time next year it will be a breeze 😂 I’ve ended the day rather more confident with the whole thing and completely raring to go! Just got to get a new cover on Polly (the polly tunnel) next week and it will be all systems go.

Muscari latifolium (grape hyacinth) Sowed from seed will bloom in its 2nd year. Sow seeds onto moist compost in autumn, cover with a sprinkling of soil and leave outside to cold stratify. Seedlings will appear in springtime and for the first year should be left in the pot undisturbed. Hello everyone This is me visiting the wonderful Pat Cottam from @the_forgotten_garden_flowers back in June 2019 while I was on holiday in Devon . I did a quick intro a couple of days ago but there's always more to tell....... I'm a creative and a grower which is at the heart of Fuchsia Blooms. I studied for a degree in textile design, I sew, paint, draw, and generally love all things art & design so being a florist fits perfectly with my creative streak. However I am not formally trained as a florist. I do not wish to use floral foam or learn a style which is not my own. I prefer to play with flowers to learn for myself what looks best. I don't personally think that it is something which you can't teach. You either get it or you don't and it's subjective. As a grower again I am not formally trained in Horticulture but I have been growing for almost 30 years. Fruit, veg & flowers from seed, taking cuttings and a few years ago I even learned how to graft apple trees. That one was more formal at RHS Wisley. But other than that I have learned by lots of trial and error, and reading books. P L A N N I N G Today has been a day filled with planning. New weddings, upcoming weddings, creative projects and big picture F&B stuff. I find it so hard to be patient when there are so many exciting things in the pipeline. I have such a clear vision for where I want my business to go and the clients/projects I want to be working with/on it’s hard not to run before I can walk. I resisted jumping on the bandwagon for just a couple of days.....but the problem is I am always up for a good introduction..... I'm Jane ( plain Jane, no middle name and nothing fancy, rather disappointingly for me) I set up Fuchsia Blooms 5 years ago because I wanted control over my life. I wanted to ensure that I only surrounded myself people people I liked who said nice things and did nice things. I also wanted to have a big garden, with rows of beautiful blooms. In the beginning I did not set out to be a florist, I wanted to be a grower. But once I had the rows of blooms it was inevitable that I would faff and use my creativity wisely. So now I am chief website designer, copywriter, accountant, seed sower, head gardener, florist, CEO, MD, tea maker, floor sweeper and chief bucket washer........ and nothing is more satisfying than seeing a photo of one of my brides carrying a UK grown sustainable bouquet down the aisle. On swipe the flower patch where this journey all started. This became one of three which I gave up last year when year we moved house. So now I have garden big enough to grow blooms on site and a new flower studio too! When we moved house I didn't even really think of how different my new garden would be. We have a lot of shade and it's very wet. We've acquired a natural paddling pool over the past few weeks and although we have had a light dusting of frost at the front of the house, at the back where I keep most of my Dahlias we have been frost free so far as its very sheltered. My old flower patches were all in frost pockets so I would have been digging Dahlias up by now. As it happens it's so wet here they will rot if I don't lift them so there's no getting out of it, and they don't need a frost to fig they just need at least 4 months in the ground to produce healthy tubers with enough energy to store over winter. We have some huge ones with 10+ tubers and others which were planted from cuttings which are much smaller but still viable. They ate mostly all dug up now and washed. I'll be splitting them over the next few weeks and packing them away in crates filled with wood shavings. Just some of the bouquets I have made over the last couple of years, my style is natural, relaxed, understated, wild and whimsical, most of the flowers are grown in my cottage plot or very locally within a 30 mile radius of my village in Cumbria, occasionally I have brought things in from British suppliers down south or up north, and occasionally imported but I try as much as possible to either grow or buy locally grown seasonal flowers and foliage wherever possible, some of the blooms come from collective members of @flowersfromthefarm of which I am a proud member myself and others from good flower growing friends, Sarah
