U P D A T E Hey everybody, sorry Iāve been a little quiet. Just trying to get through all my emails after my mini break in Marrakesh. It was honestly such an inspiring place. So many incredible colours, plants and architecture. A feast for the eyes at every turn! The whole trip was made even better as it was to celebrate my sister who gets married in a few months! The humble violet- such a beautiful native wildflower! I found this tiny vase on a bric-a-brac stall, and itās absolutely the best Ā£1 Iāve ever spent! Itās Devonshire āmottowareā pottery, a lovely little thing- especially when filled with one of my favourite wildflowers! Such a beautiful, gentle fragrance, and I love the leaves almost as much as those graceful, dainty little flowers. The Ancient Greeks associated violets with fertility and romance, and they feature throughout Greek mythology, whilst using the Victorian Language of Flowers, a gift of violets would be translated as a delicate declaration of love and affection. The humble daffodil, getting the moment to shine she deserves! Daffodils get an incredibly bad rap that is completely undeserved, I believe. The vast majority of people only think of the chunky, bright yellow, maybe a bit brash, varieties favoured by many council plantings (personally I love those too though)- but the reality is that narcissi (their more glamorous Latin name) are incredibly varied! They absolutely can be mixed in a vase with other flowers too, despite the old wiveās tale that their sap kills everything. Whilst it is poisonous, letting them sit in cool water for at least an hour lets most of the sap drain out, then theyāre ready to be arranged with other flowers in fresh water! The aim of this arrangement was to showcase as many different forms of narcissi as possible, in celebration of their beauty, mixed simply with the incredible fresh green hedgerow foliage, clematis armandii, blackthorn blossom, cowslips and a special mention to those incredible, beautifully veined Lords and Ladies leaves! Here there are double, multi-headed, heavily perfumed, flat-faced, large trumpeted and paperwhite varieties of narcissi, in all the shades of cream, white, yellow and orange. For anyone getting married in the spring, what could be better than fragranced narcissi in your wedding flowers that will forever evoke beautiful memories of your special day! Every variety here was cut from the beautiful @blackpigorchards where narcissi are under planted beneath the fruit trees in swathes- itās truly a sight to behold! As the daffodil season draws to an end, hereās to appreciating one of our most beautiful native flowers, in all her natural and cultivated beauty! āØāØ
Slow re-entry . . . so happy for the beauty of spring blooms that welcomed me back. Nothing is easy, but just taking it slow helps. Walks and connecting with friends, back to my studio, and gentle steps forward . . . missed home and glad to be back.
When I first moved to NYC in the mid 1980s, I was broke and knew few people. To connect, on Friday nights, Iād invite people to my snug 300 sq.ft. studio apartment. I asked each to bring 1 or 2 friends. From the local bodega, I purchased $1-3 bottles of wine. I still remember a $1 bottle called Los Reyes from Chile because one freezing night the party got particularly silly quickly because Iād left the wine on my fire escape: The water in the wine froze - but the alcohol didnāt! With drinks, Iād serve tea sandwiches I made with whatever ingredients I could afford (Though I did learn tuna sandwiches are not a party hit.)āØ Why am I telling you this? Because I love and miss the randomness of such gatherings. So, Iāve decided my theme words for the rest of my life are: Gather + Collaborate. āØI love people -even exhausting ones! Their unique energies charge me up along with perspectives & ideas shared - whether I agree or not. As longs a thoughts are shared with thought + thoughtfulness, Iām all ears. āØ Great energy flows through me during encounters with others, igniting me ion new ways. When I put forth the effort to meet new pope I feel as if I elevate and harness collective intelligence along with strengths from all those others. āØGathering with a goal to collaborate, leverages perspectives, skills, knowledge & connections. Sharing challenges, floodgates of ideas open! I learn new ways ot adapt, think & find resolutions. Itās a win for all when we are exposed to decision-making processes as well as checks & balances used by others to manage their lives. Creativity gets sparked as people share their lives and passions.āØ I will say it requires energy to connect. Sometimes I feel like I need dynamite to blast myself out and into a crowd of unknowns. But Iām always glad I did. You can do this, too. It doesnāt have to cost much other than energy. Host or find the house that will. Ask for contributions. The first true mixed bouquet of the season feels like a reflection on the current garden and life at the moment - a bit of this, a bit of that and a whole ton of colour! Just like the seasons of the year, I feel like there are seasons in life too. The current season is very full. We have many activities on the go right now and I love it all. It means that I have less flexibility for one off bouquets and grab n go's but it's making me stay focused and allows me to focus a bit more on event work and really growing and doing the parts of the business I love. After we boogied the bridge this morning I spent a bit of time in my tunnels this afternoon and I have to say that the spring seedlings have really taken off over the past week and it won't be long now until there are buckets of colour and I am definitely looking forward to that! Now to stretch these legs of mine that are not as young as they used to be and get ready for another full week. Hope you all had a good weekend!

I live in spreadsheets and Canva, going back and forth between price lists, digital mockups, timelines, labor and budgets. When we go to the market just a few days before your wedding weāve formulated a flexible plan for what we need, ready to pivot if quality or availability throws a wrench in our plans, or unexpected magic appears outside of it. Being able to visualize the end result of the combination while knowing the longevity + time needed to open, color, volume and cost brought by each ingredient is a complex yet satisfying puzzle. āØMechanics! Florists are also creative engineers. We need to make sure designs are stable, secure and well-balanced (surprise the ground under the grass is not level! The curtain we were meant to smilax is old and falling apart! The garland wants to rotate with the weight of the flowers!) We have a toolkit of tricks as well as buffer time built into timelines for troubleshooting so that our couples are none-the-wiser, and just see the beauty on the day of their wedding. āØReally caring about the success of your event. If the aesthetic isnāt a good match or the budget isnāt aligned with expectations, I wonāt take the event. Creativity is not a bottomless well, and burnout in this industry is so real. We protect our energy and love for the art by turning down projects that are not a good fit, so that our time and focus is reserved for those couples we do book, and we can bring our best every time. Do you show your photograph, carousel or reel to family member(s) to get their opinion before you post it? I do. But it is interesting. My husband is not on Instagram but totally supports my passion for photography and making reels. His feedback is always positive with a general comment like āthat is niceā or āthat is interestingā. My daughters do have accounts on Instagram. They only occasionally visit my gallery and very rarely engage with a like or a comment. But they are very supportive with giving feedback when I show my work before posting it with their honest opinionsā¦. which I very much listen to and appreciate. The deer have chomped their way through all my cow parsley now so Iām a little sad. It brings me such joy at this time of year. I finished making these stem vases last week and loved displaying them with what flowers I had left. They are available now and Iāll also be bringing them with me to @thedorsetbrocante next weekend. The Brocante runs on Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th @larmertree near Shaftesbury, tickets available on the gate. The hallmark of springtime: Art in Bloom at the MFA! Honored to represent @cohassetgardenclub with a floral interpretation of this gorgeous Herter Brothers American cabinet crafted in the 1880ās. The inlaid wood panels depict detailed plant and insect forms including tiny beetles munching on the leaves in the top panel.
A real joy to make this weekās arrangements for @angelinnsuffolk with the best from my garden - such a thrill to have tulips and ranunculus at the same time and it feels like each day there is a new ingredient to use.
