Hi, we have flowers growing well now and it’s so wonderful to be able to write that! There are lots of seedlings in the greenhouses waiting to get tucked into their beds for the summer, and lots of dahlias sprouting too. After such a wet start we are racing to get the last few beds prepared and also to get enough compost round as we don’t want to get the old dumper truck stuck in our soft ground…Mr Lilac is too sensible about this! Back in lockdown 2020, sweet williams were one of the main flowers that I sold first to you all as my lovely customers on my delivery rounds!🚚 I was taking buckets full out on both my horncastle and spilsby round!! One of the most common mistakes made with dahlias - and one that I freely admit I've made myself - is planting them in the ground too early. One year I planted my dahlia tubers into the soil in early April. Oh, how quickly things went wrong. The soil was still frozen solid, just inches below the surface. No matter how much I watered, those tubers couldn't break dormancy with the frigid temperatures lingering underground. Within a few weeks, every one had rotted to a mushy mess. My dahlia dreams were dashed before they'd even had a chance to sprout. The following year, determined to avoid repeating my mistake, I paid close attention to soil temperatures and waited patiently until the middle of May to plant. The ground had thoroughly warmed up by then. This minor adjustment made a significant difference, with the tubers thriving and blooming in an array of stunning colours. Dahlias are growing more popular with every year that passes and they can be tricky to get right. For that reason I've written a thorough guide to growing dahlias, which you can find over on our website. The link is in our bio. As for the supports, smaller dahlias can be supported by a 1-ring support or more simply with 3 or 5 multi-ball stakes driven into the ground and twine tied between in a cats cradle style. Hello, it's Tracey @mrsmosleysposies on my last day hosting the FFtF account. Thank you for all your interactions this week, I wanted to give some inspiration especially to those who grow cut flowers on small plots like mine. I've met some wonderful people through this membership, who supply both friendship & flowers. So I'm ending on an eruption of April colour through the last few years, using either home grown or locally grown flowers & foliage. Pic 4 is a simple blue & white bridal bouquet from lockdown, when the bride & groom could only have 2 guests. The bride actually collected the bouquet in her wedding dress on the way to the ceremony! The green & white flowers I shared yesterday were for the next wedding in a local church. Everything was created foam free, with reusable mechanics as are all my arrangements. The last pic is a silver birch heart with moss attached for the flowers to go into & used for a funeral tribute. Again everything can be composted afterwards, so truly sustainable. It's interesting looking back at previous years seeing what flowers were out then: most are still flowering at similar times, though the flowering current was over in a flash this year. What to do with old seeds? I've emptied out all my old seeds, mixed them together and spread them on a patchy area of grass like wildflowers. It's up to nature and pot luck what happens now but it's worth a try. I feel better with by seed tub a bit clearer and I might get some surprises popping up. It's worth noting that some seed lasts for years so if you've got old seed you can give it a go in seed trays rather than try this but germination might be irratic. I know I've got plenty of these seeds or plants for this year so I might as well have a clear out. Some seed like parsnip doesn't last well and it's worth buying fresh every time (or even better collecting your own). You beauties! Tulips ( donated, no idea of variety), Japanese comfrey, honesty, primula denticulata, Solomon’s seal. For tulips that flower for longer than a year, it’s worth cutting ABOVE the larger lower leaves, allowing them to photosynthesise for the next couple of month and feed next year’s bulb. Also worth giving them a really deep compost mulch after flowering and making sure they have enough light. I picked some of the tulips for our kitchen table. This is day 5 and they’re all opening up - stunning colours. This weekend will probably be the last for the tulips. 🌱 The nursery greenhouse is filling up with plenty of seed sowing and potting on this week. The soil in the field is saturated, I cannot get on the ground so I am a long way behind on my sowing and planting schedule. I have accepted that this year I will not be able to do any early direct sowing so all spring seeds will have to be sown in the greenhouse. How do you support your dahlias? Here are a few ideas from our collection, but I'd love to know how you do it! 1. For smaller dahlias I use a one-ring support (photo 1) that I pop over the tuber when I plant it out. This both marks the place where the dahlia has been planted and supports the plant as it grows. 2. For really large dahlias, such as the ever-popular ‘Café au Lait’, there are two solutions: one of our large three-ring herbaceous supports (available with a grid as pictured in photo 2, or without) will keep even the largest and most unruly dahlia in check, OR Put 5 of our multi-ball stakes around the clump, put 3 layers of string around the clump to keep it in place and then weave a cat’s cradle of string between the stakes to make a grid for the stems to come through. 3. For large clumps of taller dahlias that can grow up to 1m, you could also try a one-ring grid support (photo 3). The rectangular grid will keep the stems upright. 4. Or ask us about making you a bespoke grid or two. I had three made to fit my cut flowers raised bed, as shown in photo 4. They keep my very tall 'David Howard' upright even after a heavy downpour. 5. If you're 'going large' with your dahlia patch, then you might wish to invest in a bespoke four foot squared grid support, as our US-based client did. Seen here in the workshop, this is support on an epic scale! As you can see there are options for every dahlia and every gardener's unique preference.
