RESERVATIONS PLEASE - It was practically swimming room only over at the Marsh logs. The Painted Turtles are out in large numbers taking advantage of the warming sun. There were at least twenty all lined up just in this one area on a few fallen logs. Obviously Turtles, and from the amount of Frogs we have been hearing, all had a safe Winter. Every year as Winter approaches, we do an annual Frog rescue and release from all the smaller Ponds around our home that freeze solid. Early last November, we had three tiny Turtle tots who went along for the ride. They also needed to be saved from mistakenly choosing one of our tiny ponds for overwintering. We have many deep suitable ponds that are great for Turtles and Frogs to spend the Winter along with an incredible amount of other creatures. The other lovely tiny Ponds that are enjoyed from early Spring to late Autumn are just too shallow so we always empty them and relocate the Summer residents. We can’t help but wonder if someday we’ll see our rescued Turtle tots laying on a log here in the back Marsh. They’d still be far too small to be any of these sizeable shelled sun worshippers but eventually they’ll be able to squeeze in and get a spot. Fun Fact Friday: Take a walk around a saltmarsh, and you'll probably notice that the mud is dotted with small, round holes--and you may spot a host of small creatures dashing into them or scurrying along the surface. These are fiddler crabs, and you can find them in marshes and estuaries along the Atlantic Coast from New England to northern Florida (and right here at the Institute!). Fiddler crabs play an important role in the marsh ecosystem. Their burrowing stimulates the turnover of nutrients, aerates the mud, and helps encourage the growth of marsh grasses like Spartina. However, high densities of fiddler crabs can undermine the marsh banks and lead to permanent damage. Several predators--including diamondback terrapins and wading birds like Rails, Herons, and Egrets--help keep fiddler crab numbers in check and the system in balance. These crabs rely on a stable marsh to dig their burrows and forage along for food; as a result, the increase in the frequency and extent of marsh flooding poses a threat to the long-term health of fiddler crab populations. Perhaps, I am overly nostalgic for a time when cottages were bases for family and friends to live and enjoy a more casual and outdoor coastal lifestyle, not designed to be museum-like trophies for others’ adulation or a gross ostentation of wealth. Tucked into a marsh front lot and hidden among multiple old-growth tall pines, live oaks, and wax-myrtle trees, this cottage is expertly positioned by #lamarwebb to face northwest to take full advantage of the marsh views. Built-in the early 70s, the cottage juxtaposes a pinkish-red brick with like tone mortar color and a bright #duckgreen shutter, a clever front door portico with a focus on German restoration #lambert glass detail, and a charming trellised carport. The owner is a great preservationist of #marshlife and the #seaisland coastal ecosystem and one feels when visiting the cottage transported into the untamed beauty of the marsh and its bountiful nature, a more symbiotic cooperation between owner and marsh. Fun fact, Muskrats are known to set up residence in active beaver lodges. A tale of two #wetland sites visited this weekend... the first newly developed by @samfenimorecooper at @wykenvineyards a former arable field now with plenty of water and scrapes and already attracting some #ducks and #lapwings. The second is the finished article on #oultonmarshes at @swtcarltonmarshes with good populations of resident breeding #wetlandwaders, #owls and #bittern. Both are benefitting from the #beltedgalloways grazing, they provide a mix of vegetation heights, clear scrub, supply dung for insects and hoof prints to make muddy water edges.
