Afew months ago, someone asked me why I do photography and what makes my images distinctive. It made me pause and reflect. I realized that I don’t do photography to stand out or distinguish myself. For me, photography is about the dance of light, the blend of colors, and moments like today when I was walking with a friend and we stumbled upon a beautiful cherry blossom bush. I felt compelled to capture it. We went back, I grabbed my camera, and returning to the bush, the mix of green grass, vibrant pink, and the play of light through the lens was mesmerizing. It wasn’t about creating a masterpiece or proving anything; it was about experiencing that moment with the flowers. Nothing can replace the joy it brings to my heart. I believe many creatives share this sentiment. For those who may not understand, photography isn’t about self-justification or striving for perfection; it’s about being in sync with the camera and the subject, immersing oneself in the beauty of the moment. Rajma somehow evaded my taste buds until my early twenties. My mom is an excellent cook and introduced me to so many different dishes, but she was born and raised in the southern part of India where rajma isn’t very popular. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Fast forward to the early 2000s, I was introduced to rajma by someone who knew how to cook it well. Having spent most of my adult life relying on store-bought masalas, I finally decided to venture into the world of making spice blends or masalas at home. There is nothing wrong with using store-bought masalas – they are convenient but once you get used to the idea of homemade masalas there is no looking back.⠀ ⠀ On my last visit to India, my aunt brought me her homemade sambar masala to take home to the US. All you need to do is chop the idlis and sauté them in ghee infused with aromatic cumin seeds along with a tiny bit of sugar. We love this dish so much that we deliberately make extra idlis so that we can use the leftovers to make this tasty treat.
