Colin Bass (born 4 May 1951) is an English musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. Since 1979, he has been a member of the British progressive rock band Camel, who, after a ten-year hiatus due to the ill health of bandleader Andrew Latimer, returned to active touring in 2013. From 1984 to 1992, he was also a core figure in the pioneering World Music group 3 Mustaphas 3. He has also made two solo albums under his own name and three albums recorded in Indonesia under the name Sabah Habas Mustapha. The title track of the first, "Denpasar Moon", became a hugely popular song in Indonesia in the mid-1990s and has been covered by over 50 Indonesian, Malaysian, Japanese and Filipino artists. As a record producer he has worked with a diverse range of international artists including: the Klezmatics (USA), SambaSunda (Indonesia), Daniel Kahn & the Painted Bird (USA) Krar Collective (Ethiopia), Etran Finatawa (Niger) and 9Bach (Wales) amongst others. Stationary Traveller is the tenth studio album by English progressive rock band Camel released 13 April 1984. Like much of Camel's output, it is a concept album, in this case centering on the trials of East German refugees attempting to cross the Berlin Wall from East Berlin into West Berlin. The album also touches on the theme of politics between the two different government ideologies. It is the last Camel album to be recorded on the Decca label. The album was recorded at Riverside Studios, England. Recently added this DVD to my collection, #camel #pressurepoints, recorded and released 1984, both as a live album and concert video. Somewhere in the back of my head I still knew about this release, so when I bumped into this DVD, bought it, looking forward to hear and see this amazing and sympathetic band. And yeah what a great throwback to the 80’s it was, my 80’s, discovering #progrock. Going back to the time before internet, listening to the Dutch #LPshow a late night radio show having a focus on #progressiverock and they broadcasted parts of the Dutch concert during this tour. For me a good starting point to learn (more) about this band, always bit in the shade of the famous prog acts. Guess I still have the cassette somewhere on which I taped this hour of live material. Most vividly I remembered the awesomely brilliant rendition of the Pressure Points instrumental that opened the show and gave this live release its name. And boy was I disappointed when afterwards I learned about #stationarytraveller having only a very short version. To have this long live version reason enough at itself to add this release. Loved to watch it! Awesome show, yeah it’s Camel during the 80’s reaching #progpop and even #AOR but what a live act they are! And what a band, at this point next to bandleader #andylatimer having #paulburgess #tonscherpenzeel #colinbass #chrisrainbow and guests #richieclose #peterbardens #melcollins. The presented set not the whole concert but an 80 mins part of it, focusing on the then latest release Stationary Traveller album, about divided Berlin after the war. The music awesome, love these live renditions better than on the smooth and poppy album. The show larded with videoclip shots of a couple in love and divided by the events after the war. Very 80’s and almost to laugh about now. Yet it also adds to the story the music is telling. The concert bookended by a very ‘German feel’ studio song recorded for but not on the album, also adding to the concept. Love the epic old stuff they play! Let down the sometimes bad camerawork, like filming the wrong keyboardist during a solo… 🙄 Overall a great awesome show. Brilliant band! . .

#camel #icanseeyourhousefromhere #andrewlatimer #colinbass #andyward #janschelhaas #kitwatkins#キャメル#リモートロマンス#レコード _ Camel / I Can See Your House From Here Japan Vinyl _ 何とか仕事が一山超えてホッと😮💨暫くインスタ休んでました。次の山は4月末…😑 キャメル の来日が中止になりましたね😢アンドリュー・ラティマーさんが腰をやっちまって、回復に8〜12週間要するのでやむを得ず4/19からのクラブチッタの公演が中止となりました😢かなりの激痛で緊急手術を受けたそうな。 50周年のアニバーサリーだっただけに残念ですね。何度も立ち上がった人なんでまた復活して欲しいです🔥激誘われたけどこの時期は無理っす😢私も実家横にあったレコード屋で初めて”ミラージュ”を手に取って見たのは14歳の頃で、キャメル と出会って44周年ww でも実際中古のレコードを買ったのはもっと後。 _ で、来日記念盤でも上げようかと… キャメル 7作目、1979年リリースの邦題”リモート・ロマンス”本題は”I Can See Your House From Here “。 帯に書いてある文言通りで、ピーター・バーデンスとの決別、前作、前々作からのリチャード・シンクレアの脱退、前作でメンバー加入になったメル・コリンズの脱退からの新体制の構築からのニューアルバムとなった。 サポートとして加入した、”National Head Band”からこれまたキャラヴァンにも居たヤン・シェルハースがそのまま加入し、べースは今後盟友となるコリン・バース(今回の来日メンバー)、”Happy The Man”に居たキット・ワトキンスを迎え、ヤン・シェルハースとツインキーボードになった。 _ ピーター・バーデンスが居る、特に初期の作品は幻想的で紗がかかったサウンドに加え、対角の華やかなフレーズも持ち合わせたキャメル の双頭だった訳で、今回加入したキット・ワトキンスはHappy The Man(機会あればアップします)時代の硬質なサウンドだったので華やかさとキリっとした輪郭でリアリティのあるサウンドを持ち込んでいる。どちらかと言うとシンセ系はこの人で、ピアノ系はシェルハースが担当。この時点でアンドリュー・ラティマー’sキャメル、ラティマーありきのバンドになる。この来日の中止の理由も、ラティマーが居ないと事実上キャメル では無いと言う理由、それはそうだろ😅 _ もう一つは80年代以降”フィクス”や”ハワード・ジョーンズ”のプロデュースで、ニューウェーブなデジタルサウンドを手掛けて行く”ルパート・ハイン”がこのタイミングでこのアルバムをプロデュースしてる事。キャメル らしさを存分に残しながらも、存分にポップでテクノっぽいパートも取り入れた多様性を発揮したアルバムに仕上げてますね。やり過ぎて無い感が良い印象です。このタイミングで外部から招聘したのもわかる気がする、変革と言う意味で。 _ A2”Your Love Is Stranger Than Mine” 前々作からポップ路線に軟化して来た集大成とも思える曲なんだけど、後半にメル・コリンズがアルト・サックスでソロを吹き込んでいる。 _ A3”Eye Of The Storm”キット・ワトキンスが前バンド時代に書いた曲を手土産に、の曲。”Happy The Man”で演奏するよりはキャメル 寄りにアレンジしたと思える、そんなファンタジックな曲。台風の目にある静けさと緊張感を音源にした感じ、フレットレスベースが効いている。 _ B1”Survival “ ルパート・ハインが声がけしたと思われる”サイモン・ジェフス”のアレンジ、指揮によるオーケストラ小曲。 _ B2”Hymn To Her” これぞキャメル と言うイントロのフレーズは、”Lady Fantasy “を追い求めているキャメル ファンには1番ぶっ刺さる叙情的をギターフレーズに乗せた必殺技。展開としては非常にポップに出来ているが、ギターとシンセのユニゾンが素晴らしく、特にシンセのオブリガートが活きている。 _ B4”Remote Romance “ この時代を感じるピコピコテクノのリズム、ヴォコーダーによるアクセントも効いてて…キャメル じゃなかったら冷静にセンス感じる曲…なんだよねw _ B5”Ice” 中期では結構好きな人が多いのでは？抒情系胸を打つシンフォニックサウンドなインスト曲。パックったか分からないけど、一瞬”パヴァーヌop.50”の一節に聞こえるイントロ…アンディは絶対好きだろうから。全編哀しげな🎸フレーズからのミニ・モーグの旋律、Solinaによるストリングス、後半を締めるアンディの”泣き”しか無いソロ… こう言うギターを弾かせたらD・ギルモアかこの人だろう😢 治療に専念して回復してまたツアーに戻って欲しい…アンドリュー・ラティマー🎸🔥

Colin Bass sempre foi um músico talentoso que optou por privilegiar o lado melódico de seu instrumento em detrimento do virtuosismo estéril. O músico participou várias bandas ligadas ao prog rock, mas teve seu nome reconhecido quando passou a integrar as fileiras do Camel no final dos anos 70. O baixista seguiu por décadas como fiel escudeiro do líder Andrew Latimer e continua nas fileiras da banda até os dias de hoje. Em 1997 Bass fundou a gravadora Kartini music, com o intuito de lançar discos de seu projeto ligado a world music denominado Sabah Habas Mustapha. Mas Colin também começou a trabalhar no que viria a ser seu primeiro álbum solo. O baixista elaborou um projeto ambicioso, com o intuito de criar um álbum conceitual, tendo como base para as letras, o livro do contista Joseph Conrad, denominado “An Outcast of the Islands”. Lançado em 1896, conta a história de Peter Willems, um homem imoral e de má reputação que, fugindo de um escândalo em Makassar, encontra refúgio em uma aldeia nativa escondida, apenas para trair seus benfeitores por causa de seu desejo pela filha de um chefe tribal. 3 Mustaphas 3 is a British world music band formed in 1982. Its core members are Ben Mandelson (under the name Hijaz Mustapha), Tim Fienburgh (1954–2008) (under the name Niaveti III), Colin Bass (under the name Sabah Habas Mustapha), and Nigel Watson (under the name Houzam Mustapha), around which orbit many other Mustaphas—all supposed to be the nephews of Uncle Patrel Mustapha (Lu Edmonds). They claim to originate from the Balkans, but play genre-bending music from numerous cultures. Their slogan, “Forward in all directions!”, is an expression of this musical diversity. Active at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, they have now stopped producing and performing together, but haven’t officially disbanded. Liner notes from their albums suggest that the band was created in a Balkan town called Szegerely (possibly derived from the Hungarian region of Székely), where it played at the Crazy Loquat Club, before the members were transported inside refrigerators to England. They were playing world music before many people had even heard the term. Their second full-length album, Heart of Uncle, was released in 1989 and showed Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Irish, and Latin American influences. Soup of the Century, released in 1990, was their most acclaimed success. With tracks ranging from a country song in Japanese to Mexican traditional music sung in Hindi, and going through a mix of Irish, Scottish, Greek, Albanian, klezmer, and many other styles, the Mustaphas broke multiple cultural barriers. During the height of their fame, 3 Mustaphas 3 invited audiences to bring ripe cheeses to concerts, which the Mustaphas would attempt to identify on stage. An onstage refrigerator holding fresh fruit that was offered to the audience was an essential item demanded by the band from any serious concert promoter. Indeed, the fridge itself was a revered item for the Mustapha family (because it keeps food fresh), hence the cry often heard in intense moments of performance: “Can we take it to the fridge? Let me take it to the fridge!”
