The painting on the wall was done by Paolo Caliari (1528 – 19 April 1588), known as Paolo Veronese (Italian). He was an Italian Renaissance painter based in Venice, known for extremely large history paintings of religion and mythology, such as The Wedding at Cana (1563) and The Feast in the House of Levi (1573). Included with Titian, a generation older, and Tintoretto, a decade senior, Veronese is one of the “great trio that dominated Venetian painting of the cinquecento” and the Late Renaissance in the 16th century. Known as a supreme colorist, and after an early period with Mannerism, Paolo Veronese developed a naturalist style of painting, influenced by Titian. #paoloveronese #italianrenaissance #venicepainter #historypainting #cinquecento #laterenaissance #mannerism #uffizigallery #romaitalia #renaissanceart #venetianschool #museelouvre #museoprado #gettymuseum #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #italy #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #collageartwork #collageart #digitalcomposite #mcmdesign #bohodesign #artdeco

The six paintings on the wall were done by Paul Cézanne (French: 19 January 1839 – 22 October 1906). He was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work introduced new modes of representation and influenced avant-garde artistic movements of the early 20th century. Cézanne is said to have formed the bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the early 20th century’s new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. #paulcezanne #postimpressionist #postimpressionism #avantgarde #impressionism #cubism #frenchpainter #frenchart #19thcenturypainter #louvremuseum #museelouvre #museoprado #mauritshuis_museum #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #digitalcomposite #collageartwork #mcmdesign #bohodesign

The painting on the wall was done by Lenore “Lee” Krasner (born Lena Krassner; October 27, 1908 – June 19, 1984). She was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong speciality in collage. She was married to Jackson Pollock. Although there was much cross-pollination between their two styles, the relationship somewhat overshadowed her contribution for some time. Krasner’s training, influenced by George Bridgman and Hans Hofmann, was the more formalized, especially in the depiction of human anatomy, and this enriched Pollock’s more intuitive and unstructured output. #leekrasner #jacksonpollock #abstractexpressionist #hanshofmann #mcachicago #moma #gettymuseum #artinstitutechi #metmuseum #abstractartist #tatebritain #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #collageart #collageartwork #digitalcollage #bohodesign #mcmdesign #photocollage #chicagojazz #chicago

The painting on the wall was done by Joan Miró i Ferrà (Catalan: 20 April 1893 – 25 December 1983). He was a Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramicist born in Barcelona, Spain. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975, and another, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established in his adoptive city of Palma in 1981. Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism but with a personal style, sometimes also veering into Fauvism and Expressionism. He was notable for his interest in the unconscious or the subconscious mind, reflected in his re-creation of the childlike. His difficult-to-classify works also had a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and declared an “assassination of painting” in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting. In the final decades of his life Miró accelerated his work in different media, producing hundreds of ceramics, including the Wall of the Moon and Wall of the Sun at the UNESCO building in Paris. He also made temporary window paintings (on glass) for an exhibit. In the last years of his life Miró wrote his most radical and least known ideas, exploring the possibilities of gas sculpture and four-dimensional painting. In 1979 Miró received a doctorate honoris causa from the University of Barcelona. The artist, who suffered from heart failure, died in his home in Palma (Majorca) on 25 December 1983. He was later interred in the Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona. #joanmiro #barcelonaspain #surrealism #surrealart #surrealistpainter #fundaciomiro #museoprado #moma #artinstitutechi #tatebritain #louvre #spanishpainter #collageartwork #collageart #digitalcollage #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #mcm #mcmdesign #interior #bohodesign

The paintings on the wall were done by Oscar-Claude Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926). He was a French painter and founder of impressionist painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. During his long career, he was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of impressionism’s philosophy of expressing one’s perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein air (outdoor) landscape painting. The term “Impressionism” is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant, exhibited in 1874 (the “exhibition of rejects”) initiated by Monet and his associates as an alternative to the Salon. #claudemonet #impressionism #impressionist #frenchartist #frenchpainter #modernism #pleinair #louvre #museelouvre #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #mauritshuis_museum #museoprado #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #collageart #collageartwork #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #digitalcollage #frenchsalon #oscarclaudemonet

The paintings on the wall were painted by Henriette Wyeth Hurd (October 22, 1907 – April 3, 1997). She was an American artist noted for her portraits and still life paintings. The eldest daughter of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, she studied painting with her father and brother Andrew Wyeth at their home and studio in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. After she and artist Peter Hurd married, they moved to San Patricio, New Mexico, in the mid-1930s and raised their three children on a ranch there. They were both inspired by the landscape and eventually had a 2200-acre ranch. The painting on the wall Was done by Helen Frankenthaler (December 12, 1928 – December 27, 2011). She was an American abstract expressionist painter. She was a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting. Having exhibited her work for over six decades (early 1950s until 2011), she spanned several generations of abstract painters while continuing to produce vital and ever-changing new work. Frankenthaler began exhibiting her large-scale abstract expressionist paintings in contemporary museums and galleries in the early 1950s. #helenfrankenthaler #cutpastedigital #collageartwork #digitalcollage #saic #abstractexpressionism #collageart #cutpasteillustration #metmuseum #guggenheim #modinterior #moddesign #mcmdesign #bohodesign #americanpainter

The painting on the wall “Metamorphosis of Narcissus” (1937) is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí. Originally titled Métamorphose de Narcisse, this painting is from Dalí’s paranoiac-critical period and depicts his interpretation of the Greek myth of Narcissus. Dalí began his painting in the spring of 1937 while in Zürs, in the Austrian Alps. In Dalí’s painting, he depicts the figure of Narcissus on the left side of the canvas crouched by a lake, with his head resting on his knee, and a stone hand clutching an egg mirroring the shape of his body on the right. From out of the cracked egg, a narcissus flower sprouts. In the mid-ground of the painting stand a group of Narcissus’s rejected suitors. Among the mountains in the background rests a third Narcissus figure. #salvadordali #nationalgalleryofart #iconography #dali #spanishpainter #museoprado #museelouvre #louvremuseum #mauritshuis_museum #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #uffizigallery #tatebritain #metmuseum #gettymuseum #artinstitutechi #midcenturydesign #midcenturymodern #eamesoffice #bohodesign #midcenturyfurniture #collageart #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital

The four paintings on the wall were painted by Johannes Vermeer (October 1632 – 15 December 1675). He was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague. Nonetheless, he produced relatively few paintings and evidently was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death. #johannesvermeer #baroquepainter #dutchpainter #delftholland #denhaag #dutchgoldenage #mauritshuis_museum #tatebritain #artinstitutechi #metmuseum #guggenheimnewyork #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #pradomuseo #collageart #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #digitalcomposite #midcentury #midcenturydesign #guggenheim #gettymuseum

The photographs on top of the wall are the van Gogh’s. The left is Vincent and the right is Theo. The two paintings on the wall were done by Vincent Van Gogh, (Dutch 30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890). He was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created approximately 2100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. #vincentvangogh #vincentvangoghsunflowers #dutchpainter #dutchartist #netherlands #postimpressionist #impressionism #arles #france #louvremuseum #museelouvre #parisfrance #mauritshuis_museum #vangoghmuseum #metmuseum #museoprado #tatebritain #rijksmuseum #artinstitutechi #guggenheim #collageartwork #collageart #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital

The photographs on the wall were taken by Mike Disfarmer (born Mike Meyer, 1884–1959). He was an American photographer known for his portraits of everyday people in rural Arkansas from the 1920s to the 1950s. His stark, realist photographs were rediscovered in the 1970s and later came to be regarded as works of art. Because of his status outside of the artistic mainstream, Disfarmer’s photographs are considered an example of Outsider art. Born Mike Meyer in Indiana, he moved with his family to Arkansas in 1892. He later moved to the town of Heber Springs, Arkansas at the age of thirty, where roughly a decade later he would build and operate his photography studio. Meyer changed his name to Disfarmer while in his 50s, claiming that he was adopted by the Meyers (Disfarmer is a direct reference to Meyer, an archaic German term for farmer). Disfarmer never married, and he lived alone in the photography studio until his death in 1959. While there is speculation that he was eccentric and even insane, so little is known about his personal life that there is no evidence for these assertions other than his photographs. #mikedisfarmerphotographs #mikedisfarmer #mikemeyerphotographer #farmlife #midwestliving #blackandwhitephotography #filmphotography #mcmphotography #bnwphoto #collageartwork #collageart #bohodesign #interior #mcmdesign #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration

The drawing on the wall was done by Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (March 28 or April 6, 1483 – April 6, 1520), better known as Raphael was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. #raphaelurbino #renaissancepainter #renaissanceart #renaissanceitaly #michelangelo #davinci #highrenaissanceart #uffizigallery #firenze #romaitalia #borghesegallery #vaticanmuseumrome #bargellomuseums #medici #vasari #louvremuseum #museelouvre #museoprado #guggenheim #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #collageartwork #collageart #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital

The painting on the wall was done by Arshile Gorky (April 15, 1904 – July 21, 1948). He was an Armenian-American painter who had a seminal influence on Abstract Expressionism. He spent the last years of his life as a national of the United States. Along with Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Gorky has been hailed as one of the most powerful American painters of the 20th century. The suffering and loss he experienced in the Armenian genocide had crucial influence at Gorky’s development as an artist. #arshilegorky #abstractexpressionist #armenianpainter #abstractartist #mauritshuis_museum #museoprado #museelouvre #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #guggenheim #gettymuseum #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #midcenturyfurniture #midcenturymodern #midcenturydesign #collageartwork #collageart #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #digitalcollage

The paintings on the wall were done by Jacques-Louis David (30 August 1748 – 29 December 1825). He was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity and severity and heightened feeling, harmonizing with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime. #artinstituteofchicago #saicpics #saic #collageartwork #cutpastedigital #digitalcollage #napoleonbonaparte #jacqueslouisdavid #frenchart

The four framed paintings on the wall were done by Jan Havickszoon Steen (c. 1626 – buried 3 February 1679). He was a Dutch Golden Age painter, one of the leading genre painters of the 17th century. His works are known for their psychological insight, sense of humour and abundance of colour. Steen was born in Leiden, a town in Southern Holland, where his well-to-do, Catholic family were brewers who ran the tavern The Red Halbert for two generations. Steen’s father even leased him a brewery of his own in Delft from the years 1654 until 1657. He was the eldest of eight or more children. The painting on the wall was done by Diego Rivera (December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957). He was a prominent Mexican painter. His large frescoes helped establish the mural movement in Mexican and international art. The glamorous painting ( c. 1943 ) of Natasha Zakalkowa Gelmen is clad in a white gown and reclines on a divan against a background of large bouquets of calla lilies. The calla lily, a sensual, sculptural flower - and a quintessential example of Mexico’s exuberant flora - was celebrated by Rivera many times, particularly in frescoes depicted peasants with indigenous features carrying bundles or offerings of them. In 1943, Rivera produced some of his most sumptuous reveries, among them such lavishly constructed works as Sunflowers, Calla Lily Vendor and Portrait of Mrs. Natasha Gelman #diegorivera #mexicanpainter #mexicanart #gettymuseum #artinstitutechi #metmuseum #museoprado #palacionacionalmexico #collageart #collageartwork #digitalcollage #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #muralart #mexicanmuralart #frescoart #artdecodesign #artdeco #photocollage

The four paintings on display are by Hilma af Klint (26 October 1862 – 21 October 1944). She was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works known in Western art history. A considerable body of her work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to a group called “The Five”, comprising a circle of women inspired by Theosophy. Her paintings, which sometimes resemble diagrams, were a visual representation of complex spiritual ideas. Af Klint’s work can be understood in the wider context of the Modernist search for new forms in artistic, spiritual, political, and scientific systems at the beginning of the twentieth century. There was a similar interest in spirituality by other artists during this same period, including Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Kasimir Malevitch. The works of Hilma af Klint are mainly spiritual, and her artistic work is a consequence of this. She felt the abstract work and the meaning within were so groundbreaking that the world was not ready to see it, and she wished for the work to remain unseen for 20 years after her death. #hilmaafklint #modernist #abstractart #abstractwork #swedish #collageartwork #collageart #sweden #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #spiritualart #photocollage #mcmdesign #bohodesign #interior #artinstitutechi #moma #tatebritain #metmuseum #guggenheim

The painting on the wall was done by Sir Oswald Hornby Joseph Birley MC RA ROI (31 March 1880 – 6 May 1952). He was an English portrait painter and royal portraitist in the early part of the 20th century. Birley was born in New Zealand to Hugh Francis Birley (1855–1916) while his parents were on a world tour. He was born into an old Lancashire family. Upon returning to England, he was educated at Harrow School, London and Trinity College, Cambridge. Birley died at his home in London on 6 May 1952, a week after returning from six-week trip to the United States where he received medical assistance. The subject of the painting was Kyra Vaslavovna Nijinsky (19 June 1913– 1 September 1998). She was a ballet dancer of Polish and Hungarian ancestry, with a Russian dance and cultural heritage. She was the daughter of Vaslav Nijinsky and the niece of Bronislava Nijinska. In the 1930s she appeared in ballets mounted by Ida Rubinstein, Max Reinhardt, Marie Rambert, Frederick Ashton, Antony Tudor. #siroswaldbirley #oswaldbirley #kyranijinsky #englishpainter #portraitartist #royalacademy #royalpainter #newzealand #ballarina #ballet #tatebritain #nationalportraitgallery #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #guggenheim #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork #photocollage #mcmdesign #bohodesign #interior

The four paintings on the wall were done by Norbertine Bresslern-Roth (born 13 November 1891 in Graz, died 30 November 1978 in Graz) was an Austrian painter and printmaker. Norbertine Roth grew up in Graz, in the Klosterwiesgasse. Her mother Aloisia Roth was the daughter of a riding school owner from Vienna-Leopoldstadt. Norbertine’s artistic talent was recognized in elementary school by her teacher, who advocated that from 1907 on she was allowed to participate free of charge in drawing and painting lessons at the Styrian Landeskunstschule under its director Alfred Schrötter von Kristelli [de]. During the summer months of 1909 and 1910 she attended the animal painting school in Dachau near Munich under Hans von Hayek. In 1911 Norbertine Roth left Graz to study under Professor Ferdinand Schmutzer at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Schmutzer was also so impressed by the young artist’s talent that he accepted her into his studio at the Academy after only one year, although women were first officially allowed to study at the Vienna Art Academy in 1921. As early as 1912 she received the silver medal of the city of Graz as the first honour from her home town. After a successful exhibition at the Wiener Secession in 1916, she returned to Graz to establish herself as a freelance artist. #norbertinebresslernroth #austrianpainter #animalpainter #austria #linocut #linocutartist #printmaker #oilpainter #womanpainter #europe #catlover #catsinart #metmuseum #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #rijksmuseum #mauritshuis_museum #tatebritain #guggenheim #artinstitutechi #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork #mcmdesign #interior #bohodesign #photocollage

The five paintings on the wall were done by Guido Reni (4 November 1575 – 18 August 1642). He was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, although his works showed a classical manner, similar to Simon Vouet, Nicolas Poussin, and Philippe de Champaigne. He painted primarily religious works, but also mythological and allegorical subjects. Active in Rome, Naples, and his native Bologna, he became the dominant figure in the Bolognese School that emerged under the influence of the Carracci. Born in Bologna into a family of musicians, Guido Reni was the only child of Daniele Reni and Ginevra Pozzi. Apprenticed at the age of nine to the Bolognese studio of Denis Calvaert, he was soon joined in that studio by Albani and Domenichino. Reni died in Bologna in 1642. He was buried there in the Rosary Chapel of the Basilica of San Domenico; the painter Elisabetta Sirani (whose father had been Reni's pupil and whom some considered the artistic reincarnation of Reni) was later interred in the same tomb. #guidoreni #baroquepainter #italianartist #mannerism #classicalpainter #religiouspainter #allegoricalpainter #bolognesemannerist #bologneseschool #italy #bologna #louvremuseum #museelouvre #tatebritain #uffizigallery #borghesegallery #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #guggenheim #bohodesign #mcmdesign #photocollage #cutpasteillustration #collageart #cutpastedigital #collageartwork #vanitaspainting

The painting on the wall was done by Thomas Cooper Gotch or T. C. Gotch (1854–1931). He was an English painter and book illustrator loosely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement; he was the brother of John Alfred Gotch, the architect. Gotch studied art in London and Antwerp before he married and studied in Paris with his wife, Caroline, a fellow artist. Returning to Britain, they settled into the Newlyn art colony in Cornwall. He first made paintings of natural, pastoral settings before immersing himself in the romantic, Pre-Raphaelite romantic style for which he is best known. His daughter was often a model for the colourful depictions of young girls. His works have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal College of Art and the Paris Salon. Thomas Cooper Gotch died on 1 May 1931 of a heart attack while in London for an exhibition. The painting on the wall, The Son of Man (English) is a 1964 painting by the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. It is perhaps his best-known artwork. Magritte painted it as a self-portrait. The painting consists of a man in an overcoat and a bowler hat standing in front of a low wall, beyond which are the sea and a cloudy sky. The man's face is largely obscured by a hovering green apple. However, the man's eyes can be seen peeking over the edge of the apple. Another subtle feature is that the man's left arm appears to bend backwards at the elbow. #renemagritte #surrealism #surrealistpainter #belgianartist #belgiansurrealist #selfportrait #frenchartist #museelouvre #museedorsay #mauritshuis_museum #rijksmuseum #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #guggenheim #thesonofmanpainting #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #digitalcomposite #jazz #interior #mcmchicago #bohodesign #illustrations

The two paintings on the wall were done by Hollis Sigler (March 2, 1948 – March 29, 2001). She was an American artist. She received several Arts Lifetime Achievement awards as both an artist and an educator, including the Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement from the College Art Association in 2001. Sigler was interested in art as a child and began painting in elementary school. She went on to study art at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, where she was awarded the Bachelor of Arts in 1970; she completed graduate studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received the Master of Fine Arts in 1973. She had early success with a series of photo realist paintings that depicted underwater swimmers but by 1976, in a gesture meant to repudiate what she considered a male-dominated style, she abandoned realism entirely in favor of a faux-naïve approach. Her subject matter, presented in a way that suggested the work of an untutored or naïve artist, focused on a woman's world-view. A tendency toward autobiographical content was evident even at the early stages of what would become her signature style. In 1978, Sigler became a member of the Columbia College Chicago faculty in the department of Art and Design. As a teacher, she was up to date on issues in contemporary art and had a talent for communicating this knowledge to her students. She died of breast cancer on March 29, 2001, at the age of 53. She was one of the teachers we had at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in the mid 1970’s. #hollissigler @saicpics @columbiachi #chicagoacademyoffinearts #chicago #chicagoartist #1970art #naivepainter #americanartist #downtownchicago #onlyinillinois #chicagojazz #chicagoart #artinstitutechi #mcachicago #mcmchicago #mcmdesign #bohodesign #interior #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork #digitalcollage

The two posters and three paintings on the wall were done by Comte Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa (24 November 1864 – 9 September 1901). He was known as Toulouse Lautrec. He was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist, and illustrator whose immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century allowed him to produce a collection of enticing, elegant, and provocative images of the sometimes decadent affairs of those times Born into the aristocracy, Toulouse-Lautrec broke both his legs around the time of his adolescence and, due to the rare condition pycnodysostosis, was very short as an adult due to his undersized legs. In addition to his alcoholism, he developed an affinity for brothels and prostitutes that directed the subject matter for many of his works recording many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec is among the painters described as being Post-Impressionists, with Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Georges Seurat also commonly considered as belonging in this loose group. #HenrideToulouseLautrec #henrilautrec #painter #printmaker #caricaturist #illustrator #frenchpainter #oilpainting #frenchartist #impressionist #postimpressionist #paulcezanne #vincentvangogh #paulgauguin #georgesseurat #absinth #museelouvre #museedorsay #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #guggenheim #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork #digitalcomposite #interior #bohodesign #mcmdesign

The cropped painting on the wall was done by John Singer Sargent. Mrs. George Swinton epitomizes the painterly virtuosity that made John Singer Sargent one of the most fashionable portraitists in late-19th-century Europe and America. Extravagant color and brushwork were central to Sargent’s success, as was his ability to present a refined and appealing image of his sitter. In Elizabeth “Elsie” Swinton’s case, he accentuated her regal bearing and feminine dress. Sargent harmonized the realism of her face and body with bursts of impressionistic brushstrokes describing the shimmering, translucent fabric descending from her shoulder. Swinton was also known for her musical talents; at the time her portrait was executed, she was recognized as an amateur singer and later began performing professionally.(Art Institute of Chicago) John Singer Sargent (January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925). He was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, Spain, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. #johnsingersargent #portraitofmadamex #mrshughhammersley #metropolitanmuseumofart #parissalon #portraitpainter #florenceitaly #americanportraitist #americanpainter #metmuseum #collageart #collageartwork #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #digitalcomposite #digitalcollage #artinstitutechi

The seven paintings on the wall were done by Marius Borgeaud (21 September 1861 – 16 July 1924). He was a Swiss Post-Impressionist painter. He was born in Lausanne. Borgeaud came from a bourgeois milieu; he attended the Industrial School of Lausanne and did not intend to pursue painting. As chance would have it, the future gallerist Paul Vallotton was one of his school-mates. In 1888, he began working in a bank in Marseille and remained there until the death of his father the following year. He inherited a significant legacy. The following decade saw Borgeaud squander that legacy by leading an expensive life, particularly in Paris. His excessive lifestyle threatened his health and forced him to detox on the shores of Lake Constance in 1900 under guardianship. Shortly after he returned to settle in Paris was when he devoted himself to painting. #mariusborgeaud #postimpressionism #postimpressionist #lausanne #swisspainter #parisfrance #19thcenturyartist #impressionist #france #switzerland #interiorpainting #tatebritain #metmuseum #guggenheim #artinstitutechi #louvremuseum #museedorsay #museelouvre #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork #digitalcollage #bohodesign #mcmdesign #interior

The painting on the wall, “The Herring Net”, was done by Winslow Homer. In The Herring Net, he captures the conflict between man and nature in his depiction of two fishermen hauling in a herring net amidst a stormy and powerful seascape. Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 – September 29, 1910). He was an American landscape painter and illustrator, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters of 19th-century America and a preeminent figure in American art in general. Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations. Homer died in 1910 at the age of 74 in his Prouts Neck studio and was interred in the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His painting, Shooting the Rapids, Saguenay River, remains unfinished. #winslowhomer #illustrator #americanlandscapepainter #americanpainter #oilpainting #watercolor #metmuseum #guggenheim #moma #artinstitutechi #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork #interior #victorianera #antique #mcm #bohodesign

The painting on the wall was done by Benjamin West, PRA (October 10, 1738 – March 11, 1820). He was a British-American artist who painted famous historical scenes such as The Death of Nelson, The Death of General Wolfe, the Treaty of Paris, and Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky. Entirely self-taught, West soon gained valuable patronage and toured Europe, eventually settling in London. He impressed King George III and was largely responsible for the launch of the Royal Academy, of which he became the second president (after Sir Joshua Reynolds). He was appointed historical painter to the court and Surveyor of the King's Pictures. West also painted religious subjects, as in his huge work The Preservation of St Paul after a Shipwreck at Malta, at the Chapel of St Peter and St Paul at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, and Christ Healing the Sick, presented to the National Gallery. #benjaminwest #historicscenes #royalacademy #selftaughtgenius #tatebritain #nationalportraitgallery #nationalgalleryofart #metmuseum #gettymuseum #guggenheim #artinstitutechi #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork #digitalcollage #mcmdesign #bohodesign #interior

The four paintings on the wall were done by Thomas Cole (1 February 1801 – 11 February 1848). He was an English-born American artist and the founder of the Hudson River School art movement. Cole is widely regarded as the first significant American landscape painter. He was known for his romantic landscape and history paintings. Influenced by European painters, but with a strong American sensibility, he was prolific throughout his career and worked primarily with oil on canvas. His paintings are typically allegoric and often depict small figures or structures set against moody and evocative natural landscapes. They are usually escapist, framing the New World as a natural eden contrasting with the smog-filled cityscapes of Industrial Revolution-era Britain, in which he grew up. His works, often seen as conservative, criticize the contemporary trends of industrialism, urbanism, and westward expansion. #thomascole #hudsonriverschool #americanlandscapepainter #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #gettymuseum #guggenheim #landscapepainter #americanpainter #collageart #collageartwork #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #digitalcomposite #bohodesign #mcm #digitalcomposite

The painting on the wall, “The Inspiration of Saint Matthew” c. (1602), is a painting by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Commissioned by the French Cardinal Matteo Contarelli, the canvas hangs in Contarelli chapel altar in the church of the French congregation San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome, Italy. It is one of three Caravaggio canvases in the chapel: hanging between the larger earlier canvases of The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, and The Calling of Saint Matthew. This was not an easy commission for Caravaggio, and at least two of the three paintings had to be either replaced or repainted to satisfy his patron, the Cardinal Del Monte. #caravaggio #michelangelomerisidacaravaggio #theinspirationofstmatthew #baroque #baroquepainter #italianartist #italianmaster #uffizigallery #romaitalia #museelouvre #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork #boho #mcm #regencydesign #regencyera

The four paintings on the wall were done by John Singleton Copley RA (July 3, 1738– September 9, 1815). He was an Anglo-American painter, active in both colonial America and England. He was probably born in Boston, Province of Massachusetts Bay, to Richard and Mary Singleton Copley, both Anglo-Irish. After becoming well-established as a portrait painter of the wealthy in colonial New England, he moved to London in 1774, never returning to America. In London, he met considerable success as a portraitist for the next two decades, and also painted a number of large history paintings, which were innovative in their readiness to depict modern subjects and modern dress. His later years were less successful, and he died heavily in debt. The seven paintings on the wall were done by Henry Taylor Lamb MC RA (21 June 1883 – 8 October 1960). He was an Australian-born British painter. A follower of Augustus John, Lamb was a founder member of the Camden Town Group in 1911 and of the London Group in 1913. Henry Lamb was born in Adelaide, Australia, the son of Sir Horace Lamb FRS, who was the professor of mathematics at Adelaide University. When Horace Lamb was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at the Victoria University of Manchester in 1885 the family moved back to England. Henry Lamb was educated at Manchester Grammar School, before studying medicine at Manchester University Medical School and Guy's Hospital in London, but Lamb abandoned medicine in 1906 to study painting at the Chelsea School of Art, then run by William Orpen and Augustus John. #henrylamb #henrytaylorlamb #australianpainter #australiaborn #britishartist #britishpainter #victorianpainter #oilpainting #englishpainter #tatebritain #nationalportraitgallery #australia #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #gettymuseum #collageart #collageartwork #digitalcomposite #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #bohodesign #interiorroom #mcmdesign

The two paintings on the wall were done by Sir Anthony van Dyck (22 March 1599 – 9 December 1641). He was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy. The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. The painting on the wall was done by Artemisia Lomi or Artemisia Gentileschi (Italian: 8 July 1593 – c. 1656). She was an Italian Baroque painter. Gentileschi is considered among the most accomplished seventeenth-century artists, initially working in the style of Caravaggio. She was producing professional work by the age of 15. In an era when women had few opportunities to pursue artistic training or work as professional artists, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence and she had an international clientele. #artemisiagentileschi #italianpainter #baroquepainter . #baroque #italianattist #italy #europeanartist #europe #caravaggio #womanartist #painter #renaissanceitaly #renaissanceart #firenze #florenceitaly #uffizigallery #tapestry #gettymuseum #museelouvre #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #digitalcollage #collageart #collageartwork #bohodesign #mcmdesign #interiorroom

The six paintings on the wall were done by George Inness (May 1, 1825 – August 3, 1894). He was a prominent American landscape painter. Now recognized as one of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced by the Hudson River School at the start of his career. He also studied the Old Masters, and artists of the Barbizon school during later trips to Europe. There he was introduced to the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, which was significant for him; he expressed that spiritualism in the works of his maturity (1879–1894). Inness died in 1894 at Bridge of Allan in Scotland. According to his son, he was viewing the sunset, when he threw up his hands into the air and exclaimed, "My God! oh, how beautiful!", fell to the ground, and died minutes later. A public funeral for Inness was held at the National Academy of Design. A memorial exhibition was conducted at the Fine Arts Building in New York City. #georgeinness #barbizonschooloffrance #landscapeart #hudsonriverschool #americanpainter #landscapepainter #oldmasters #france #newyorkcity #outdoors #nature #Tonalism #scenic #metmuseum #gettymuseum #artinstitutechi #nationalgalleryofart #scotland #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #collageartwork #collageart #bohodesign #mcmdesign #interiorroom

The two drawings on the wall were done by François Boucher ( French: 29 September 1703 – 30 May 1770). He was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher, who worked in the Rococo style. Boucher is known for his idyllic and voluptuous paintings on classical themes, decorative allegories, and pastoral scenes. He was perhaps the most celebrated painter and decorative artist of the 18th century. The pastel painting of François Boucher, on the cabinet, was done by Gustaf Lundberg (17 August 1695 – 18 March 1786). He was a Swedish rococo pastelist and portrait painter. The four paintings on the wall were created by Adélaïde Labille-Guiard (11 April 1749 – 24 April 1803), also known as Adélaïde Labille-Guiard des Vertus. She was a French miniaturist and portrait painter. She was an advocate for women to receive the same opportunities as men to become great painters. Labille-Guiard was one of the first women to become a member of the Royal Academy, and was the first female artist to receive permission to set up a studio for her students at the Louvre. Labille-Guiard became a master at miniatures, pastels, and oil paintings. She was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong speciality in collage. She was married to Jackson Pollock. Although there was much cross-pollination between their two styles, the relationship somewhat overshadowed her contribution for some time. Krasner's training, influenced by George Bridgman and Hans Hofmann, was the more formalized, especially in the depiction of human anatomy, and this enriched Pollock's more intuitive and unstructured output. #leekrasner #jacksonpollock #abstractexpressionist #hanshofmann #mcachicago #moma #gettymuseum #artinstitutechi #metmuseum #abstractartist #tatebritain #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #collageart #collageartwork #digitalcollage #bohodesign #mcmdesign #americanabstractartists

The seven paintings on the wall are and were done by 17th century Dutch Golden Age painters. The seven painters are listed clockwise from top left to bottom left. 1. Rembrandt van Rijn 2. Frans Hals 3. Gabriël Metsu 4. Johannes Vermeer 5. Gerrit Dou 6. Maria van Oosterwijck 7. Judith Leyster Although Dutch painting of the Golden Age is included in the general European period of Baroque painting, and often shows many of its characteristics, most lacks the idealization and love of splendour typical of much Baroque work, including that of neighbouring Flanders. Most work, including that for which the period is best known, reflects the traditions of detailed realism inherited from Early Netherlandish painting. The eight paintings on the wall were done by Sarah Biffen (1784 – 2 October 1850), also known as Sarah Biffin, Sarah Beffin, or by her married name Mrs E. M. Wright. She was a Victorian English painter born with no arms and only vestigial legs. She was 94 cm (37 in) tall. She was born in 1784 in Somerset. Despite her disability she learned to read and write, and to paint using her mouth. She was apprenticed to a man named Dukes, who exhibited her as an attraction throughout England. In the St. Bartholomew's Fair of 1808, she came to the attention of George Douglas, the Earl of Morton, who went on to sponsor her to receive lessons from a Royal Academy of Arts painter, William Craig. The Society of Arts awarded her a medal in 1821 for a historical miniature and the Royal Academy accepted her paintings. The Royal Family commissioned her to paint miniature portraits of them. When the Earl of Morton died in 1827, Biffen was left without a noble sponsor and she ran into financial trouble. Queen Victoria awarded her a Civil List pension and she retired to a private life in Liverpool. Some years later, she married and 12 years later tried to renew her success with the name Mrs. Wright but this was not successful. She died on 2 October 1850 at the age of 66. The painting on the wall, “The Four Continents, also known as The Four Rivers of Paradise or The Four Corners of the World”, is a painting by Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens, made between 1612 and 1615. Rubens painted this piece during a time of truce in the Eighty Years' War known as the Twelve Years' Truce. The painting depicts the female personifications of the four continents (Europe, Asia, Africa, and America) with the male personifications of their respective major rivers (the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile, and the Río de la Plata). The painting also depicts three putti in the foreground along with a crocodile, tigress, and her three cubs. An important figure in this piece is the woman in the middle who personifies Africa. The six paintings on the wall were done by Paolo Caliari (1528 – 19 April 1588), known as Paolo Veronese (Italian). He was an Italian Renaissance painter based in Venice, known for extremely large history paintings of religion and mythology, such as The Wedding at Cana (1563) and The Feast in the House of Levi (1573). Included with Titian, a generation older, and Tintoretto, a decade senior, Veronese is one of the "great trio that dominated Venetian painting of the cinquecento" and the Late Renaissance in the 16th century. Known as a supreme colorist, and after an early period with Mannerism, Paolo Veronese developed a naturalist style of painting, influenced by Titian. #paoloveronese #italianrenaissance #venicepainter #historypainting #cinquecento #laterenaissance #mannerism #uffizigallery #romaitalia #renaissanceart #venetianschool #museelouvre #museoprado #gettymuseum #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #italy #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #collageartwork #collageart #digitalcomposite #mcmdesign #bohodesign

The six paintings on the wall were done by Giuseppe Maria Alberto Giorgio de Chirico (Italian: 10 July 1888 – 20 November 1978). He was an Italian artist and writer born in Greece. In the years before World War I, he founded the scuola metafisica art movement, which profoundly influenced the surrealists. His best-known works often feature Roman arcades, long shadows, mannequins, trains, and illogical perspective. His imagery reflects his affinity for the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and of Friedrich Nietzsche, and for the mythology of his birthplace. After 1919, he became a critic of modern art, studied traditional painting techniques, and worked in a neoclassical or neo-Baroque style, while frequently revisiting the metaphysical themes of his earlier work. He remained extremely prolific even as he approached his 90th year. In 1974 de Chirico was elected to the French Académie des Beaux-Arts. He died in Rome on 20 November 1978. In 1992 his remains were moved to the Roman church of San Francesco a Ripa. #giorgiodechirico #italianpainter #borningreece #surrealistpainter #surrealism #friedrichnietzsche #mannequins #neoclassicalpainter #baroquepainter #frenchacademiedesbeauxarts #museelouvre #louvre #uffizigallery #romaitalia #tatebritain #museoprado #metmuseum #gettymuseum #artinstitutechi #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #collageartwork #collageart #bohodesign #mcmdesign

The four paintings on the wall were done by Mary Stevenson Cassatt ( May 22, 1844 – June 14, 1926). She was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh's North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France, where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children. Diagnosed with diabetes, rheumatism, neuralgia, and cataracts in 1911, she did not slow down, but after 1914 she was forced to stop painting as she became almost blind. Cassatt died on June 14, 1926, at Château de Beaufresne, near Paris, and was buried in the family vault at Le Mesnil-Théribus, France. #marycassatt #printmaker #impressionism #impressionistpainter #impressionist #americanpainter #edgardegas #livinginfrance #impressionistart #womanpainter #france #museelouvre #tatebritain #metmuseum #gettymuseum #mauritshuis_museum #rijksmuseum #nationalportraitgallery #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #collageartwork #collageart #digitalcollage #bohodesign #mcmdesign

The seven framed prints on the wall were done by Hasui Kawase (川瀬 巴水, Kawase Hasui, May 18, 1883 – November 7, 1957).He was an artist, one of modern Japan's most important and prolific printmakers. He was a prominent designer of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by Western art. Like many earlier ukiyo-e prints, Hasui's works were commonly landscapes, but displayed atmospheric effects and natural lighting. Hasui designed approximately 620 prints over a career that spanned nearly forty years. Towards the end of his life the government recognized him as a Living National Treasure for his contribution to Japanese culture. #hasuikawase #shinhanga #ukiyoe #livingnationaltreature #printmaker #landscapeprintmaker #japaneseculture #tokyonationalmuseum #moriartmuseum #thenationalartcentertokyo #tatebritain #museelouvre #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #gettymuseum #frickmuseum #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration #collageartwork #collageart #digitalcomposite #mcm #boho #japaneseculture

The three paintings were done by Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann RA (30 October 1741 – 5 November 1807), usually known in English as Angelica Kauffman, was a Swiss Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. Remembered primarily as a history painter, Kauffmann was a skilled portraitist, landscape and decoration painter. She was, along with Mary Moser, one of two female painters among the founding members of the Royal Academy in London in 1768. The painting on the top right was Angelica Kauffmann’s portrait of the renowned singer Sarah Harrop (Mrs. Bates), arguably the artist’s masterpiece in portraiture, is a rare representation of a self-made woman, the great Handelian performer Sarah Harrop (1755–1811), by one of the very few professional women artists of the period. Kauffmann, one of two female cofounders of Britain’s Royal Academy, shows Harrop seated in the wilderness, a lyre at her side and a rolled sheet of music in her hand. The mountain, Mount Parnassos, is the home of the Muses, and the waterfall issues from the Hippocrene spring. The lyre most likely identifies Erato, the Muse of lyric poetry, and while the instrument is based on ancient types, the sheet music grounds the portrait in the eighteenth century, for it is recognizably an aria from George Frideric Handel’s opera Rodelinda, Queen of the Lombards (1725). #angelicakauffman #neoclassicalpainter #neoclassicalart #englishpainter #royalacademy #royalpainter #tatebritain #britishartist #gettymuseum #artinstitutechi #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageartwork #collageart #setdesign #swisspainter

The left painting on the wall was done by Caravaggio. The painting on the right is an interpretation by MRL circa 1983-84, acrylic on linen. Caravaggio created one of his most admired altarpieces, The Entombment of Christ, in 1603–1604 for the second chapel on the right in Santa Maria in Vallicella (the Chiesa Nuova), a church built for the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. A copy of the painting is now in the chapel, and the original is in the Vatican Pinacoteca. The painting has been copied by artists as diverse as Rubens, Fragonard, Géricault and Cézanne and many more. #caravaggio #theentombmentofchrist #vaticanmuseumrome #vaticanpinacoteca #borghesegallery #uffizigallery #museelouvre #museoprado #tatebritain #metmuseum #gettymuseum #artinstitutechi #michelangelomerisidacaravaggio #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageartwork #collageart #digitalcollage #bohodesign #mcmdesign

The framed picture on the wall is Danaë, a painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn. It was first completed in 1636, but Rembrandt reworked it significantly by 1643 at the latest. Once part of Pierre Crozat's collection, it has been in the Hermitage Museum, in St. Petersburg, Russia since the 18th century. It is a life-sized depiction of the character Danaë from Greek mythology, the mother of Perseus. She is presumably depicted as welcoming Zeus, who impregnated her in the form of a shower of gold. Given that this is one of Rembrandt's most magnificent paintings, it is not out of the question that he cherished it, but it also may have been difficult to sell because of its eight-by-ten-foot size. Although the artist's wife Saskia was the original model for Danaë, Rembrandt later changed the figure's face to that of his mistress Geertje Dircx. #rembrandtharmenszoonvanrijn #rembrandt #rembrandtvanrijn #dutchpainter #dutchgoldenage #holland #amsterdam #leidenholland #17thcenturyart #baroquepainter #saskiarembrandt #danae #greekmythology #perseus #mauritshuis_museum #rijksmuseum #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #uffizigallery #gettymuseum #tatebritain #nationalportraitgallery #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #collageart #collageartwork #cutpastedigital #cutpasteillustration

The three paintings on the right wall were done by Berthe Marie Pauline Morisot (French: January 14, 1841 – March 2, 1895). She was a French painter and a member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists. She was described by art critic Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" (The three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt. Morisot was married to Eugène Manet, the brother of her friend and colleague Édouard Manet. The painting of her on the left wall was done by Édouard Manet (23 January 1832 – 30 April 1883), a French modernist painter. He was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, as well as a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. The painting on the wall was by Paul Cézanne (French: 19 January 1839 – 22 October 1906). He was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work introduced new modes of representation and influenced avant-garde artistic movements of the early 20th century. Cézanne is said to have formed the bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. #paulcezanne #postimpressionist #postimpressionism #avantgarde #impressionism #cubism #frenchpainter #frenchart #19thcenturypainter #louvremuseum #museelouvre #museoprado #mauritshuis_museum #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi gettymuseum #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #digitalcomposite #collageartwork midcenturydesign

The painting on the left is by Eugène Delacroix, the painting on the right is by Théodore Géricault. Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (French: 26 April 1798 – 13 August 1863). He was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school. Delacroix's most influential work came in 1830 with the painting Liberty Leading the People, which for choice of subject and technique highlights the differences between the romantic approach and the neoclassical style. Less obviously, it also differs from the Romanticism of Géricault, as exemplified by The Raft of the Medusa. Jean-Louis André Théodore Géricault (French: 26 September 1791 – 26 January 1824). He was a French painter and lithographer, whose best-known painting is The Raft of the Medusa. Despite his short life, he was one of the pioneers of the Romantic movement. The Raft of the Medusa (French: originally titled Scène de Naufrage (Shipwreck Scene) – is an oil painting of 1818–19 by the French Romantic painter and lithographer Théodore Géricault (1791–1824). Completed when the artist was 27, the work has become an icon of French Romanticism. At 491 by 716 cm (16 ft 1 in by 23 ft 6 in), it is an over-life-size painting that depicts a moment from the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of today's Mauritania on 2 July 1816. #eugenedelacroix #theodoregericault #frenchpainter #frenchart #romanticism #lithographs #realistpainter #romanticmovement #france #museelouvre #louvremuseum #louvre #museoprado #metmuseum #tatebritain #rijksmuseum #mauritshuis_museum #artinstitutechi #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #collageart #collageartwork midcentury design.

The five paintings on the wall were done by Oscar-Claude Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926). He was a French painter and founder of impressionist painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. During his long career, he was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of impressionism's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein air (outdoor) landscape painting. The term "Impressionism" is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant, exhibited in 1874 (the "exhibition of rejects") initiated by Monet and his associates as an alternative to the Salon. #claudemonet #impressionism #impressionist #frenchartist #frenchpainter #modernism #pleinair #louvre #museelouvre #tatebritain #metmuseum #artinstitutechi #mauritshuis_museum #museoprado #kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna #collageart #collageartwork #cutpasteillustration #cutpastedigital #digitalcollage #frenchsalon #oscarclaudemonet
