It’s been a long road. These are from a few days ago, at the beginning of this journey with my dad. We stopped here in Vernal, #Utah at the Dinosaur National Monument. This #museum only has large #dinosaur #fossils, due to a #prehistoric river that carried the #bones and deposited them all piled together down river, where they were buried and fossilized. It takes approximately one river mile to figure out why guides love floating through the Gates of Lodore. As those steep, dark-red canyon walls rise up to envelope you, expansive sandy beaches emerge around every bend. The clear water playfully splashes up as your guide dances their raft through the riffles and rapids. Bighorn sheep traverse the steep cliffs with grace, birds of prey soar overhead, and fish leap up out of river to catch a bite to eat. The next day? Rinse and repeat. Sound appealing to you? These clams need freshwater rivers and streams in order to survive. How do we know? Because they’re still alive today. We can find them throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. 👋 Meet Nina Crawford, a @scientistsinparks intern, who recently served at seven different national park sites in the western region, where she assisted with pollinator inventory! Most of her time was spent at 🦕 @dinosaurnps on the Colorado-Utah border, where she worked with butterflies, and bumblebees. “Being part of the 🦋 pollinator inventory team means I have been able to help tag Monarch butterflies to help scientists gain insight on the western populations migration patterns. As a part of the Scientist in Parks position, I get to complete my own research project in which I hope to investigate how grazing patterns inside Dinosaur National Monument may impact rare 🐝 bumblebee species! Blender Project no. 2: Jenny Meets Her Favorite Dinosaur You ever get the first inklings of a project idea in your head, but don't quite know what to do with it? Maybe you don't know what medium it would work in, or maybe you haven't developed the right skill yet. Last spring, when I got back from our family trip to Dinosaur National Monument, I drew a tiny sketch of a kid looking at a dinosaur display. Even though it was such a dorky little idea, it kept hanging around in my head. Almost a year later, now that I’m on a Blender kick, I thought it might be the time to give it another try. And I’m glad I did! I love how an idea has the potential to go so many different directions. I didn’t know I’d end up going with a semi-realistic approach when I started… but even though it’s so different from the initial idea, it's really fun to see how many little elements still wound up in the final piece. (Even the silly green dinosaur made a cameo) P.S. If you ever have the chance to go to Dinosaur National Monument, you should do it. I went as a kid, but I think I liked it even better as an adult... you get to touch real dinosaur fossils! P.P.S.
