The site is impressive in scale. Smaller than the Grand Canyon but still large in its own right. You can do some decent hiking down into the canyon without a permit. However, you need a wilderness permit if you want to do any overnights or go further down. #blackcanyonofthegunnison #nationalpark #Colorado #hiking

Last Looks Trip 6, 5/4-5/5: Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This past weekend I met up with a friend/old co worker to camp at Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This is one of the first places I went in CO when I moved here, and have always loved returning. I'm glad I got to finally camp here too, and although I couldn't do the route home that I originally wanted because the bridge to Gunnison is closed, I'm glad I got to drive the million dollar highway one last time. #nps #blackcanyonofthegunnison #weekend #adventurepup #roadtrip #colorado

April 23, 2024 Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, Colorado Oak Flat Loop Trail: This was the first trail we headed out on. It was decently warm out but wasn’t too far in until we found some snow, ice and mud. Hiking poles probably would have helped. At one point the snow won and I sunk into it and fell. Thankfully, there were two other witnesses besides Mike 😆 I only have a little bruise from it. Not long after that I had another little slip. It was a beautiful trail and would definitely recommend if anyone plans a trip here. #colorado #Coloradogram #Travelamerica #Coloradobound #Coloradohiking #Blackcanyonofthegunnison #Blackcanyonofthegunnisonnationalpark #blackcanyon #Coloradohikes #Nationalparkgeek #Nationalparklover #Coloradoinstagram #Mountains #Coloradophotography #Viewsfromcolorado #Parksproject #Findyourpark #Nationalparks #Alltrails #Visitgunnison #Sheexplores #Womenwhohike #hikersofinstagram #destinationhiking #beautifuldestination #runjunkee #snowinspring

I never get tired of writing about Colorado, especially the historic mountain mining towns, and way up at the top of the list is Crested Butte!!! If you’re a mountain biker or #cyclist, you probably already know it, since Crested Butte vies with Marin’s own Fairfax as the birthplace of #mountainbiking. But it’s also perfect for hikers and history buffs and makes a great home base for visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and adjacent Curecanti. And the fall color!!! Some of the best aspen appreciation anywhere. Read all about it in today’s story in The Points Guy, link in bio. #crestedbutte #visitcolorado #blackcanyonofthegunnison #colorado #mountainbiker #crestedbuttecolorado #nationalparks #fallcolor #rockymountains @thepointsguy @visitcolorado @skicrestedbutte @skicrestedbutte

Must Visit This is one of the least visited and most underrated national parks in Colorado - the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. 💾(𝐒𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫) Despite its stunningly dramatic 2,000-foot-deep canyon, the park receives fewer visitors than many other national parks in Colorado. We love visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, so here are a few of our family favorite trails in the park. 1. Rim Rock Trail: this is an easy 1.5-mile round-trip trail offers stunning views of the canyon and is suitable for children of all ages. This Trail is located within the South Rim section of the Black Canyon National Park. 2. Oak Flat Loop Trail: is an easy 1.5-mile loop trail that’s is also located in the South Rim Campground. 3. Warner Point Nature Trail: this is easy 1.5-mile round-trip trail offers great views of the canyon and is located at the end of the North Rim Road. 4. Cedar Point Nature Trail: easy 0.5-mile round-trip trail is located at the Cedar Point Picnic Area. It’s important to note that while these trails (in my opinion) is considered family/ kid-friendly, you should always use caution and follow park rules and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. What is your favorite park you have visited? TIP: If you're in Colorado and need new clothes, check out outletscr. They have many cute outlet shops, and everything is 50-70% cheaper than in regular retailers. Black Canyon of the Gunnison Ein Juwel in Colorado. Wir haben ihn heute zum zweiten Mal besucht. Wie beim ersten Mal hatten wir ihn auch heute fast für uns allein. The #blackcanyonofthegunnison #nationalpark is probably the most underrated of all of Colorado’s national parks. I found myself feeling really in tune with this landscape. It’s not so “alien” as the desert landscape that surrounded me for the majority of my solo camping jaunt into Utah and back. 100% will return.

Never underestimate any route in this canyon. Any route here can serve it up. I took a pretty big fall on the crux pitch. I would come back to climb in this canyon over the next decade and I have and will always respect this place and any climber that gets it done here.

National Park week is ripe for reminiscing. Last year, I took two solo trips out west for adventure races a month apart. Neither race went according to plan (they never do, and that’s part of the fun)! But, most of the enjoyment came from the days prior to the races, traveling to new places and parks as I acclimated to the very non-Ohio/Kentucky elevations. July 2023’s trip was made of a clockwise loop in Colorado. Backcountry camping in Rocky Mountain National Park, Great Sand Dunes, Black Canyon of the Gunnison (this park absolutely blew me away and took my breath with it). August 2023’s trip comprised mostly of solo backpacking in the Grand Tetons, and doing some risk management in bear country. Every single time I prioritize connecting with earth and the nature within it, I feel more aligned with myself too. It is never ever wasted time. Happy National Park Week! #nationalparks #nationalparksweek #ashtonsadventures #adventure #backpacking #camping #usa #colorado #wyoming #greatsanddunesnationalpark #blackcanyon #blackcanyonofthegunnison #rockymountains #rockymountainnationalpark #adventureracing #grandtetonnationalpark

For our last issue, I had the honor of working and getting to know Lisa Webster, the wife of the late Ed Webster. Ed had recently died, and at the encouragement of Jimmie Dunn, I connected with Lisa to see if we could republish one of Ed’s essays in The Zine. With the help of Jeff Achey and the librarians at the American Alpine Club, I ended up finding the piece “In The Company of Friends,” which was originally published in 1977. Lisa gave us her blessing and was beyond generous with her time, as we had several phone calls discussing the process. Our correspondence has continued over the months, and in one card, she wrote something that has stuck with me, a quote of Ed’s that she paraphrased by saying, “Friendship is the first belay.” Perhaps this quote has stuck with me so much because I am at a cycle of change in my life—a new season. By the time this zine is printed, I’ll have had forty-five years of life. For many years I had the same consistent climbing partners and rarely branched out to meet new ones. But in the last couple of years, I’ve had to meet new people. Connecting with a climbing partner can be similar to connecting with a romantic partner. Sometimes the magic is there; sometimes it isn’t. The best relationships, on or off the rock, have an unexplained chemistry. Deep connections often make me wonder about past lives—like that feeling when you meet someone who you seem to understand and feel comfortable with right away, with no real explanation of why. ———————- Words by yours truly @lukemehall_writer Published in Volume 24 (the current issue) 📷 Ed Webster Collection ⚡️Link in bio to subscribe to The Zine ⚡️ PS: if you’re outside of the USA and want to score some zines send us a DM and we’ll send a discount link to help offset shipping costs ! Black Canyon of the gunnison National Park (the road from Montrose, CO to the National park is not currently closed due to the bridge being out). These rocks date back 1.7 billion years and the cliff walls rise to 1750 feet to the rim. There are several overlooks you can stop at (use the NPS app) and then each is an average of 200-300 yards to the overlook. There are some natural rock stairs built in to most, and otherwise you are walking on packed dirt for the trail. The light colored blended rocks with the dark colored are really cool to see in person. The colors are due to metamorphism with the original rocks so hot that they almost melted and then squeezed in to the layers of the remaining solid portions of the rocks. These have made really fun designs to look at. #blackcanyonofthegunnison #montrosecolorado #nps #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkgeek #nationalparkphotography #nationalparksusa #travelfamily #rvtrip #greatviews #yournationalpark #roadschooling

Moonlight over Black Canyon of the Gunnison Another underrated park, our 55th National Park, happens to also be a dark sky park! This hidden gem includes one of the steepest canyons you’ll ever see—up to 2,722 feet! If you look closely you will see a headlamp from one night hiker in the back country hiking along the Gunnison River far, far below. Have you been to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison? It is a small park with a big view and we'll be going there this June! We will spend the early part of the workshop making blue hour blends with some Milky Way and a crescent moon, and later in the week, we’ll move toward working with the quarter moon filling the canyon floor with more angled light. We have two spots left if you want to check the Black Canyon of the Gunnision off your list, at night! _____________________________ 📷 - Nikon Z 6II 🔘 - Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 S @ 44mm 🎞 - ISO 100 🔘 - f/2.8 🎞 - 480 seconds Processed in LrC and Silver Efex Pro ____________________________ Image by @matthillart #NationalParkWeek#exploremore #findyourpark #astrotourism#nightphotoschool #NationalParksAtNight #photographingnationalparks #blackcanyon #blackcanyonofthegunnison #photographytraining #learnphotography #photographyschool #photographyworkshop #photoeducation #photographyeducation #nightphotography #ig_nightphotography #longexposure #ig_longexposure #nightsky #moonlight #bw #bwphotography#photography #nationalparkgeek #nationalparkphotos #usinterior #nightskies #optoutside

Did you miss the first couple Free National Park Days of the year? No stress, there are a few more coming up. And might we be so bold as to make a few suggestions to help you see the best of the best during these free-entrance days? Yes, yes we will be.
🦬 June 19: Yellowstone (WY + MT) for incredible views without the huge crowds that tend to visit in July and August. It’s a prime time for wildflowers and spotting baby animals. Redwood NP (CA) will also be at its greenest (check out Fern Canyon). 🏔️ August 4: Catch the window of perfect weather at the Grand Tetons (WY), or trek up the PNW for prime hiking in parks like Rainier, Olympic, and North Cascades (WA). 🌲 September 28: Visit Yosemite in a quieter month, with fewer crowds and cooler temps that just add to the spectacular views and hikes. 🥾 November 11:  If you’re lucky and can avoid the snow (or heavy snow), our picks are for some Colorado Parks! Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a sleeper, full of plunging valleys and soaring peaks. Or, head out to Southern Utah for a handful of parks — we’re big fans of a late-fall visit to Canyonlands or Capitol Reef. #nationalpark #freenationalparkday #yellowstonenationalpark #grandtetonnationalpark #cascadenationalpark #olympicnationalpark🌲 #mountrainiernationalpark #yosemitenationalpark🌲 #blackcanyonofthegunnison #canyonlandsnationalpark #capitolreefnationalpark #freeadmission #helpinghydros #domorethandonate #bewell

The BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON in Colorado (NP status 1999) is not a hot spot (the TikTokers haven’t grabbed a hold yet) with about 300,000 visitors a year (compared to 4 million at its sister Rocky Mountain). But I think it rivals the Grand Canyon. It’s one of the steepest, deepest, and narrowest canyons in the country. It’s a rugged, impressive, non-commercialized little gem and I love the black rock. The BCOG holds a special place in my heart 🖤. I can attest to the steepness. While trying to gingerly pick my way down a steep embankment to get to the rivers edge, I slipped and broke my arm which I didn’t know until we got home from our trip. Luckily we had an ACE wrap in the first aid kit in my car which was my buddy and got me through the rest of our trip, including a wonderful kayak on the Blue Mesa. PARK TIP: If you are up for a challenging hike braving 1800 degree elevation drop in 1.5 miles and abundant poison ivy, The Gunnison Route in the South Rim is THE preeminent hike. It requires a wilderness permit and only 15 people are allowed per day. It may have the distinction of being one of the steepest hikes in the NP system. It gets you hours of seclusion at river’s edge with impressive views. And major bragging rights if you live through it unscathed. There is a chain to help through the steepest sections. But no marked trail and no snack shops. And yes…we sat this one out. #nationalpark #nationalparkgeek #nationalparksweek #blackcanyonofthegunnison #gunnisonroute
