Swipe left for 6 novelty clips from 1948! Winstead Sheffield ‘Doodles’ Weaver was born in Los Angeles in 1911. He attended high school in LA and then college at Stanford, where he was part of a comedy troupe. After college he earned radio work in LA and after World War 2 he was hired by Spike Jones in 1946. Weaver was a big part of the City Slickers’ late 40’s radio shows, where he introduced a character called Professor Feetlebaum - a master of quick-witted Spoonerisms (intentional ‘dyslectic’ switching of consonants and sounds for comedic effect). For you Hee Haw fans, think of barber Archie Campbell’s ‘Rindercella’ stories. Weaver’s most famous work with Spike Jones is likely the 1948 parody of “William Tell Overture,” where Doodles impersonates the well-known 1940’s sports announcer Clem McCarthy in a fictional horse race broadcast. “It’s Cabbage by a head!” The fictional horse ‘Beetlebaum’ became so popular that RCA added the name to the title on later label printings. The record was so big that Jones and Weaver followed it up with an Indianapolis 500 parody the next year where the winner again was Beetlebaum. The flipside is “The Man On the Flying Trapeze,” also sung by Weaver with a truckload of Spoonerisms, like “the flapping tripeze.” Both sides of this disc were frequently played on Dr. Demento’s radio show in my teenage years. Doodles had his own TV show for a short time in 1951, and he made many TV appearances in the 1950-60’s, including on Dennis the Menace, Batman, Dragnet, and the Monkees. He was in at least 90 films including Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds,’ Jerry Lewis’ ‘The Nutty Professor,’ and ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.’ Trivia note - Doodles Weaver’s niece is the actress Sigourney Weaver and his brother Pat Weaver served as president of NBC in the 1950’s.

My wonderful pal Jaan went to the WFMU record fair a couple of weekends ago and picked up some gifts for me- this authentic vintage Dr Demento button, some old Demento bumper stickers, and this truly amazing bootleg LP comp of “”punxsploitation” bangers. It’s my new favorite record. Thanks Jaan! The Demento stuff was bought from a guy that Jaan knows, a neighbor of the fabled Doctor. He occasionally sells some old dead stock merchandise for him. This button is wonderful and brings back a lot of memories. Growing up, I faithfully listened to Dr. Demento’s radio program every Sunday night. I’d pretend to go to sleep and read comic books and old issues of Mad Magazine under the covers with a flashlight until his show came on. My dad definitely knew what I was up to, most weeks turning off the crackly little radio, still playing after I’d fallen asleep listening. Each week Demento played a lovingly curated selection of novelty songs- parodies of hits, jokes numbers, curiosities, and some totally bonkers outsider music. He would give airtime to current novelty songs but would always slip in some old classics. I loved Weird Al but really relished songs by Alan Sherman, Spike Jones, Groucho Marx, or old Tin Pan Alley tunes. Dr Demento has a website where you can buy all sorts of merchandise, including this button! Super fave childhood song. Used to play on Dr Demento all the time. I was mesmerized by the story as a kid. I didn’t know he was a part of Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy at the time. I didn’t know the books but I attempted to play the Commodore 64 game a lot and never got off earth. Not sure who did the music or who the female singer is but still super love this song. I was intrigued by the song They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa 2. I was even more intrigued by the promise of a cover of Eleanor Rigby But now I am most intrigued by Dr. Demento The good Dr. Demento is a DJ that specializes in the obscure art of novelty songs. And like me, his record collection has a wide weird streak to it. I saw an interview where the Doc was showing some of his record collection and was thrilled when the first album he pulled was Muhammad Ali's album I Am The Greatest, which I also happen to own. A string of these double LPs were released in the early 70s, full of singles, b-sides, rarities, and wacky interstitials intended to drum up interest in WB/Reprise artists and albums. They were available for $2 each and advertised in magazines and album sleeves. This one contains cuts from Jerry Garcia, Allen Toussaint, Faces, Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, T. Happy 80th Birthday to the legend, Dr. Demento. Who? Pfft. The man is singularly responsible for providing the platform for a young @alfredyankovic and the world is all the better for it! Without Dr. Demento (Barry Hansen) it would have been impossible to listen to some of the funniest, cleverist, most insightful and downright wacky music and skits the world has ever heard. I've listened to him my entire life, and that is no exaggeration. 50 years of the Deranged Doctor and all I can do is smile when I think of him and hear his voice in my head.
