The Third Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando Medici commissioned Flemish Giusto Utens to paint portraits of fourteen Medici residences surrounding Florence. From 1599-1602, Utens produced birds-eye views of them in a series of lunettes. Those featured here include the Pitti Palace, Villa di Castello, Villa di Vetturino and Villa di Marignolle. Ferdinando was Henrietta Maria’s maternal great uncle. She too commissioned a series of house portraits including residences in her jointure. They were displayed in her gallery at Oatlands. In realtà, sono varie le copie di questo ritratto e non tutte sono attribuite alla mano del pittore fiorentino; vi proponiamo perciò gli esemplari degli Uffizi (1543; inv. depositi n. 28; figg. 1-3) e dell'Art Gallery of North South Wales di Sydney (1544-45; inv. 78.1996; figg. 4-5), considerati opera del Bronzino. In questi ritratti, il duca indossa un corsaletto da piede alla tedesca, inciso all'acquaforte a girali, racemi e con lo stemma mediceo sul colletto. L'armatura è stata attribuita all'opera dell'armoraro Jörg Seusenhofer e le decorazioni alla mano di Leonhard Meurl. Ciò che rimane del corsaletto rappresentato da Bronzino - schiena, cosciali e mognone - è attualmente conservato al Museo del Bargello. 🇬🇧 Today let's talk briefly about Bronzino's portrait of Cosimo De Medici in armour. In reality, there are several copies of this portrait and not all of them are attributed to the hand of the Florentine painter; we therefore propose the exemplars from the Uffizi (1543; inv. deposit no. 28; figg. 1-3) and from the Art Gallery of North South Wales in Sydney (1544-45; inv. 78.1996: figg. 4-5), considered to be the work of Bronzino. In these portraits, the duke wears a German foot combat half armour, etched with scrolls and racemes and with the Medici coat of arms on the upper edge of the breastplate. The armour has been attributed to the work of armorer Jörg Seusenhofer and the decorations to Leonhard Meurl - both active in Innsbruck between 1538 and 1580. New blooms to admire... My Duke of Tuscany jasmine has a couple of buds and they smell divine.. it's really one of my favourite smells in the world. The roselle has pretty flowers and I believe I can harvest some fruits soon (still can't figure out when they're ready!) This purslane has such huuuuge leaves compared to the neighbouring plant and I was wondering if the roots struck gold or something, but I think it might just be a different variety. The Medici children were educated at home by tutors in a range of subjects such as classics, languages, and arts. - From an early age Isabella showed a great love for music, which in her adulthood she used as means for self-expression, according to biographer Caroline Murphy. A great beauty, she had a lively, high-spirited and impulsive character that was commented on by courtiers. - In 1553, at age 11 Isabella was betrothed to 12-year-old Paolo Giordano Orsini, in line for the Duchy of Bracciano in southern Tuscany, a liaison Isabella's father felt necessary to secure his southern border and his relationship with the ancient Roman Orsini family. The two married in 1558, in a semi-private ceremony, at Villa di Castello. Paolo left the following day. - Concerned by the spending habits of his new son-in-law, Cosimo decided to keep his daughter and her 50,000 scudi dowry in Florence, giving her greater freedom and control over her own affairs than was customary for Florentine women of the time. - Following her mother's death, she acted as first lady of Florence for a time, displaying the de' Medici aptitude for politics. She suffered several miscarriages and remained childless until her late twenties. Her daughter Francesca Eleonora (known as Nora), was born in 1571 and eventually married her cousin Alessandro Sforza. - Her son Virginio was born in 1572 and eventually inherited his father's dukedom. The somewhat straightforwardness of the facial expressions is a contrast to the complexity of and richness of the clothing. As the wife of Cosimo I de Medici, Duke of Florence, Eleonora is portrayed as the ideal renaissance woman, the epitome of education, culture and motherhood (represented by the child and the pomegranate on her dress). Bronzino was a master of Mannerism, and this is among his most reproduced works.
