What’s the collective noun for thatched cottages? Anyway, whatever it is, here is one 💁🏼♀️ The cottage in the 2nd photo was the cutest 🥰 but surrounded by a high hedge. So short of climbing it, this is all I got. 🌳 So tonight is a British celebration of the arrest Guido Fawkes (caught whilst attempting to blow up the House of Lords) and the survival of King James I. I do love fireworks though, and as a child my dad would set a big bonfire in our garden and we would bake potatoes and set off fireworks. I’m sure this is one of the most recognisable buildings, with its swinging sign, in Lacock. The 15th century coaching inn, @signoftheangel , has 2 AA Rosettes and is on my list to both eat and stay here. I’m already dreaming of sitting by the fire, listening to the wood cracking as it burns, my cheeks rosy from the heat, glass of something bubbly in hand, before sitting down to a scrumptious meal with a glass of wine and pudding, of course, then climbing the stairs to my cosy bedroom. My #asundayhousepic today is the charming bakery in Lacock, Wiltshire. Picture perfect isn’t it 🥰 The village is owned, almost entirely, by the National Trust and truly feels as though you’re stepping back in time 🛸 The day I visited it was almost tourist-free and not an instragrammer insight, except me 🙊 Film companies love it too and it’s been the location for Pride & Prejudice, Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and Downton Abbey, among others 🎥. This fairytale building is Malmesbury Lodge in the village of Grittleton, Wiltshire 🏰 Designed by architect James Thomas, in c.1840, it now has a Grade II listed building status and sits at the entrance to Grittleton House, a wedding and events venue. With an octagonal spirelet . . . such a cute name 🥰 . . . it really is straight out of a fairytale 🧚🏻♀️ I was driving through Grittleton, after visiting Castle Combe, and pulled the car over just to get this shot. I had to laugh to myself because not long after I stopped, another car pulled over to do the same. They were a couple I’d passed several times whilst walking around Castle Combe. I saw something on here today that didn’t sit well with me. An account has posted someone else’s photo without any clear credit. In fact, the account I’m talking about, which is quite large, is full of other ‘artists’ photos without credit. Instead, the photo is tagged with the original artist’s name, but unless you tap the photo, you wouldn’t know. So, for all intents and purposes, the photo posted looks like it has been taken by the account holder. It surprises me that this person is getting away with this and that no one else has said something to them. Maybe they have 🤨 What do you think about this practice? Would you be happy for your own work to be used without clear credit, or are you not bothered? Chilham Castle and Keep sit in 25 acres of landscaped gardens with stunning views over the Stour Valley 🌳 The Castle was originally built in 1616 on the site of a ruined (Chilham) castle of which the Norman Keep still remains and stands alongside. It is built on an hexagonal plan with 5 angled sides with the 6th being open (which you can just see in photo 4 🏰 Chilham Castle is a private residence (what an incredible place to call home) and said to be the oldest inhabited dwelling in the UK. The absolutely beautiful gardens, which had input from Capability Brown, are designed to make the most of the sweeping views and are quite breathtaking 😍 I spent some time just wondering around (camera in hand of course) taking in the gorgeousness of it all and they really are the perfect place for a picnic 🥖 The Castle gardens are part of a private home and, therefore, not open to the public on a daily basis. It just so happened that I was there on a Tuesday, the day they are open (June through September 10am-4pm), how lucky was I 🍀 Tours of the house need to be booked in advance so, sadly, I couldn’t go in. If you are close to Canterbury, you really should visit the village of Chilham and the Castle gardens, you won’t be disappointed. She chose the chocolate-box village of Chilham, just 6 miles out of Canterbury 🌺 It was the prettiest village with whitewashed and timber cottages, a village square, 2 pubs, a tea shop and, a castle . . . of course 🏰 She took a room @woolpackchilham , a 600 year old inn at the bottom of a hill below the Norman castle. Could this be #asundaycartpic ? 💁🏼♀️ ~~~~~~~~~~~~ This was one of the props being used during the filming of ‘Emma’ (a la Jane Austen 📖) in the pretty village of Lower Slaughter. It was so interesting to see how it had been transformed into the fictional Georgian-Regency town of Highbury in Surrey (not the real Highbury in north London). It is thought that Miss Austen modelled her ‘Highbury’ on Surrey villages she knew such as Cobham, Box Hill and Leatherhead. The new film is due for release early next year and the cast includes the wonderful Bill Nighy. I took a trip to Canterbury on Sunday and what an enjoyable day I had. I couldn’t quite believe that I’d never visit before now . . . I know right? If you love the film ‘The Holiday’ you may already be familiar with this pretty little village and if you don’t love the film, why not? No really . . . Shere is the prettiest of villages nestled in the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The entire village was covered in snow for filming, which made it look even prettier , if it isn’t pretty enough already. My youngest daughter use to have piano lessons in Shere (we lived close by), so we were lucky enough to watch some of the filming. It was also the film location for Bridget Jones, The Edge of Reason and The Wedding Date, among others. Shere is a picture-postcard village with gorgeous cottages, a flower adorned pub, a little steam running through it ~ ducks n all ~ a village church and a ford. It is very touristy, but even so, the residents are friendly and happy to say hello. The White Horse (of Cameron and Jude fame), The William Bray and the Dabbling Duck Cafe are all good pit-stops serving great food. Shere is definitely worth a visit and there are plenty of places to park for free. Thank you to everyone who sent me messages and called to ask if I was ok, I was chuffed. I took a break from my insta life as real life got in the way. Hope you are well and I look forward to catching up with you 🥰 ~~~~~ The Manor House, originally built in the 14th century to replace a Norman castle that was beyond repair, was part of the Barony of Combe in the medieval village of Castle Combe 🏰 This magnificent house has had many Lords of the Manor including Sir John Oldcastle, the figure on which Shakespeare based his character of Sir John Falstaff in his play Henry IV (love a bit of Shakespeare) 🖌 The English geologist, George Poulett Scrope, lived here and created the beautiful Italian classical and medieval gothic styled gardens which still remain and are quite beautiful 🌳 Occupied by the New Zealand Forestry officers during WWII, the Manor House became a country club in 1947 and shortly after was sold to Bobbie Allen, an amateur hotelier, and her husband. They transformed it into a premier country house hotel, with glamorous clientele, referred from top London hotels, swishing through the rooms and gardens (can you imagine it?) and renowned for its suitability for horse riding 🐴 Mrs Allen, who was a bit of a character, wrote a book ‘From Claridge’s to Castle Combe’ about her experiences here, which appears to be unavailable, but I would love to find it 📖 After many years, the Allens sold the Manor House to the Clegg’s who sold it to the present owners. Today it is a five star, luxury, country house hotel and golf club with a Michelin starred restaurant 🌟 tucked neatly away in a chocolate-box village, literally, as Castle Combe has appeared on the lids of many a chocolate box. Pembroke Lodge is a Georgian mansion situated at the highest point of Richmond Park (London’s largest royal park). This elegant lodge began it’s life as a single-room cottage for a mole catcher (I love that a mole catcher is an actual thing 😆). His job was to deal with the moles whose molehills were a problem for horseman during hunts 🐴 Later, it was enlarged to house a gamekeeper and then let out to Elizabeth, Countess of Pembroke (and so named). She loved it so much that she asked King George III to grant it to her, which he did, and she transformed it into a beautiful residence 🤴 In 1831, after the Countess died, King William IV granted Pembroke Lodge to his son-in-law, Earl of Erroll and then Queen Victoria gave it to John Russell, her Prime Minister. She regularly visited him here as did Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll and William Thackeray 👸🏻📚 Occupied by the military during WWII (suffering direct bomb hits in 1942 and 1944) and a base for the Phantom Squad, GCHQ Liaison Regiment, it was then converted by the government into flats for park staff (how lovely) and is now a beautiful wedding venue 👰🏼🤵🏼 Phew, what a busy house 🏡 Pembroke Lodge also has a lovely tea room, it’s terrace having wonderful views over the park and London. I often go and sit here with my book and a coffee in the morning. Camilla Lacey Cottage was the home of English novelist, diarist and playwright, Frances Burney from 1797-1801. Fanny, as she was known, was self-educated and began writing her ‘scribblings’ at the age of 10. She was the first English authoress to make a name for herself before Jane Austen, the Brontes or George Elliot and Jane Austen said she owed a debt to Fanny for her character writing 🖌 Fanny married General Alexandre D’Arblay in the village of nearby Mickleham. He was quite poor so they survived on a £100 a year pension from the court of King George III, where Fanny had been engaged as the second Keeper to the Robes of Queen Charlotte 👑 Fanny’s 3rd novel, Camilla, was a financial success and the couple were able to build a cottage on a piece of land given to them by William Lock, who owned nearby Norbury Park. That cottage was Camilla Lacey. Unfortunately, because they did not own the land, the cottage had to be sold 4 years later as part of the estate of Norbury Park after the death of William Lock. Camilla is the prettiest of cottages in the hamlet of Westhumble in the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). I would be extremely happy living here, wouldn’t you? Bradford on Avon was recently described as a ‘mini version of Bath’ (without the downsides) and also one of the best places to live in the UK. The Shambles, this pretty street, is on the site of the original open Market Place. On market days, those entitled, would set up their market stalls. Gradually, the stalls became permanent structures and, eventually, timber framed buildings many of which remain today and date back to the 15th century. I’d love to travel back in time to see how it use to look on market day. Box Hill and Westhumble Station was constructed at the insistence of Thomas Grissell, owner of nearby Norbury Park, as part compensation for the railway cutting across his land. He obtained the right to stop any train on request, a privilege that was exercised regularly and abolished in 1962. The station buildings, designed by Charles Henry Driver, are now a private dwelling and commercial premises and protected by a Grade II listing. What a dream to live in a pretty little railway building and have your very own railway platform outside your front door. I’m not sure which was worse, the Instagram fiasco of yesterday or the shenanigans in the Love Island villa 🤔 • Meanwhile, how gorgeous is Upper Slaughter Manor ? A picturesque Elizabethan Manor House, originally owned by a Norman nobleman, which dates back to the Saxon period and is recorded in the Domesday Book. The Slaughter family were later owners and started extending the house in Tudor times. It is believed that they took their family name from the Manor rather than the other way round. It stands on the site of a much earlier building and still has the 14th century crypt believed to be part of a medieval monastery. Earlier in time, the house was known as Wells Place, referring to the springs, or wells, which supplied drinking water. The Guinness Trust was founded in 1890 by Edward Guinness, Ist Earl of Iveagh, a great grandson of the founder of the Guinness Brewery. It was established to help homeless people living in London and Dublin. He donated £200,000 to set up the Guinness Trust in London, the equivalent of £25 million today. Guinness Care specialises is services for over 10,000 elderly people and those with learning disabilities, providing home care, supported living, care homes and schemes for retired people. Bradford-On-Avon sits between the Mendip Hills, Salisbury Plain and the Cotswolds Hills. The centre of the town originally grew up around the ford across the river Avon, hence the name Broad-Ford, and in Norman times this crossing was supplemented with the stone bridge that still stands today. You can just see, on the left of my photo, a small domed building which was originally a chapel and later used as a lockup where the town’s troublemakers were put for the night (swipe to see in full) 😬 I had a wonderful day wandering around this pretty town and even enjoyed a spontaneous cuppa with a lovely couple in their gorgeous garden. The Old Mill at Lower Slaughter . . . The Slaughters deriving their name from the old English ‘slohtre’ which means ‘muddy place’ . . . is a 19th century, restored flour mill that sits on the River Eye. It was last used commercially in 1958 and still has a working waterwheel. Now an award winning gift/craft shop, museum, tea shop and ice cream parlour, it is the only touristy part of this idyllic, very non-muddy, Cotswolds village. The mill use to be part of Lower Slaughter Manor which was built in 1658 for the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire and now a grand country house hotel with landscaped gardens sitting unassumingly on the edge of Lower Slaughter (swipe to see) I didn’t get to go into @brownswordhotels , but next time I hope. Today I visited Lower Slaughter . . . a super pretty Cotswolds village. It didn’t look like it’s normal self though, because it had been transformed in to a Georgian-Regency village for the filming of Emma, a novel by Jane Austen. The filming was complete and the set was being taken down although, much of it remained, like this cabinet maker’s workshop. If you look carefully, you can see the name Highbury which is the fictional village where the story takes place. Many of my photos are not as the village usually looks, which I think is rather lovely. I chatted to a resident, who told me how wonderful the scenes have been with period costumes and white horses. Today I visited Bradford-on-Avon. What a delightful town it is with the friendliest of folk. Whilst admiring a garden opposite a pretty row of cottages, the owners invited my to sit with them in their garden. We chatted all things from their life in Bradford-On-Avon to Queen Victoria (the gentleman had lectured in history, so I was in good hands). I had coffee, a tour of their Grade II listed home and the loan of an umbrella . . . to be returned next time I visit. If someone said Orange Pekoe to me, I would think they were talking about a new Pokémon character, wouldn’t you 💁🏼♀️ It is, in fact, a grade for tea and in this case a wonderful tea (and coffee) shop in Barnes. I stopped here during my Barnes to Chiswick spring walk (see highlights) and tried the Guinness cake which was delicious. They do a mean coffee too. Really worth stopping if you are nearby. Some of you know that my daughter ( @ames.ro ) is a fashion influencer and, today, it was brought to her attention that someone was posting her content. Straight up, no credit, blatantly posting her styling videos, about 30 of them. She asked them, politely, to remove the content or credit her and they blocked her. I call this theft! Amy reported the offending account to instagram and they removed her content. This account is still live though and, I believe, still posting content that is falsely credited or not credited at all. I wonder how much this happens without us knowing. Has it happened to you?
